(I'm not gonna quote everything you've said as you've done for me, 'cause I don't have a lot more to say. I'm mindful of the problems with quoting out of context, but I'm trying to be fair, anyway.) You are reading a one sentence blurb on a website from a European Group, and then ascribing that specific elements to the broader universe of communities with similar interests. Why are you citing that website to support what *you* like about Old School Magic? In my first post, I was talking about what the Swedish 93-94 group originally intended, which was my basis for calling one format a pale imitation of another. I was talking specifically about 93-94, which is what the Swedish group calls the format, after all. In your response, I thought you were telling me that that wasn't what the Swedish group intended. You specifically mentioned 93-94 by name. That's the only reason that I quoted that other site. I wasn't trying to say that also applied to the US formats. Rereading this thread, I can see that there has been some miscommunication. Yes it is. But your error is assuming that every Old School community seeks the same goals. There are many reasons to play Old School.
When did I ever say that? In a previous post, I even said that the different formats have different goals, didn't I? You are entitled to your subjective opinion on that point - but you are not entitled to conclude that any other format is just a "bastardization" of what Old School is or should be. That's just your opinion, and not an objective assessment. But that's just silly. Come now, of course I am entitled to conclude that one format is just a ""bastardization"" of another. Surely you aren't saying that I'm not entitled to my own opinion, here, right? Also, whenever anybody says anything in the Internet, isn't it already pretty obvious that that it's just a subjective opinion? You should mentally add "I think that..." to the start of every sentence you read (including this one). I would think you already know this and so it's very awkward for me to even point it out. So, what exactly is the point of calling attention to the subjectivity of what I've said? When do you think I ever represented myself as objectively right? I agree that I have an opinion that not many people in the US share and one that's probably pretty hard to identify with by readers of this site. You're not telling me anything I didn't already know. But TMD isn't a hive mind- I don't see why anything I'm saying here is so incindiary.

What's "hardcore" about the format isn't the barrier to entry - but the attempt to preserve the vision and feel of what the Type I metagame felt like in 1994 or 1995 or even 1996 (for those version that permit cards from those years). It has to do with what it felt like with T1 Juzam or Hypnotic Scepter was a devastating play. Or what it's like to be Sceptre locked. It has nothing to do with budgets. You miss the point entirely.
No, I don't think you are right. Is there something you think I'm misunderstand here? http://oldschool-mtg.blogspot.com/p/historik.html?m=093/94, Old School Mtg, started 2007 in the casual Magic scene in Gothenburg, Sweden, and have since grown with players across the world. A total of seven sets are allowed in the format; Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends and The Dark. Non-English versions and reprints after Unlimited are considered proxies, and 93/94 is not played with proxies. The hard, time consuming and expensive road to build most decks is considered an important feature of the format. You play with what you own, and try to find what you need. Furthermore, if you don't think artificially high barrier to entry is an intended feature of the format, I'd love for you to explain why it is that the Swedish rules disallow stuff like Revised. If you think it's all about "pimpness" as you've said above, then why not allow, say, FBB? That was certainly considered pretty fancy back in the olden days that I can remember. I agree that the format is intended to recapture the feel of the original early 90s MTG scene, as you say, but I fail to see why you seem to think this isn't supposed to include the dynamic of card scarcity and high required personal investment that was every bit a part of the format as getting Scepter-locked. Granted, the $$$ isn't viewed as a good thing by many players (and I might point out that getting Scepter locked isn't very positive experience, either), but it seems to be pretty explicitly made clear in the part I quoted. The US takes on organized old school Magic- formats that are only slightly more exclusive than Legacy- simply appear to have different goals from the Swedish one- a format far more exclusive than even Vintage. The difference in exclusivity, primarily due to the difference in attitudes toward CE, make the US versions a lot less interesting to me, though. It might not surprise you that I've also never been a fan of Vintage proxy events, either.

I really, really hate that both of these formats allow CE. I'm not thrilled about allowing FBB cards, either. 93/94 was evidently orginally intended as a "hardcore" throwback format and to restore an old school sense of making a serious investment to be able to play (a non-budget deck) that absolutely was a part of Magic's early culture. I feel like the various US-based versions of the format are downright bastardized versions of this good idea; the people that think of the NorCal or Eternal Central Old School formats as "hardcore" are just lying to themselves, IMO. In actuality, these are budget formats that have a barrier to entry marginally higher than that of Legacy. Anyway, what's with the weird errata on Howling Mine? Howling Mine (2) Artifact At the beginning of each player’s draw step, if Howling Mine is untapped, that player draws an additional card. This actually matches the current Oracle text on the card. What's the point?

No, this is not Vintage Playable in the least (just like Thing in the Ice).
If you find yourself excited about and looking forward to recently spoiled cards in a new set, I totally get that and by all means, I think you should enjoy the experience of spoiler season and the hype train. However, respectfully, I'd suggest that a vintage-oriented forum is really not the best place to discuss obviously below-eternal-format-power-level cards like this one.

This card is obviouly unplayably bad in Vintage and shouldn't be getting any attention at all on this site. Why is nobody else in this thread saying this yet? Are people just getting caught up in the set's hype and forgettIng to be skeptical? I find this discussion baffling.
I'm all for enjoying new sets, but very few new cards are good enough for the format, and I just don't see this making the cut. "New Vintage cards" is a contradiction in terms, after all. Do I really need to state the obvious? This card is plainly too slow and not nearly as good as the other established creature options.

This came up in Rnd 3 of the Vintage Champs feature match. According to the video, it looks like they gave the wrong ruling. Vito tapped 4 to cast Shattering Spree with replicate under Trinisphere. It's roughly 3:26ish mark here: http://www.twitch.tv/cardtitan/v/12371480I can confirm that this was ruled incorrectly. I heard about this ruling several rounds after-the-fact, and I talked this over with the event head judge who had by that time already been made aware of the issue and agreed that it had been ruled incorrectly. Thanks. Abe

When Opponent has a Necro on Board for example, or if you can Snapcaster and Bolt their own Jace, force them to Anc you, Fetch and Tinker into nothing... kind of that. You can't actually make your opponent bolt his own Planeswalker even when controlling his turn. Katzby

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Was this ruling correct? (Eternal Weekend, round 7)
|
on: December 17, 2013, 10:10:59 am
|
My name's Abe and I was the head judge of Vintage champs at Eternal Weekend. I handled the ruling you are talking about on appeal.
I haven't watched the video, but the infraction is described in this thread more-or-less as I heard it, if not for missing a few details. The players told me that after Stephen put two cards on top of his library he also played a land and cast a Mox before passing the turn. Then, during Stephen's end step, Gerard used his Deathrite Shaman to exile Stephen's Ancestral Recall and have him lose 2 life, which resolved. Then, Gerard untapped and drew for the turn before a spectator notified the table judge of the issue.
Clariax is absolutely right. Generally speaking, there are only two options when dealing with this type of problem: either rewind everything or leave everything as is.
When I got to the table, after hearing both sides of the story, I knew there was no way I would be rewinding this. While it's not the only consideration to make, the sheer number of things that happened in between the error and when it was caught meant that we were well past the point of being able to rewind easily and without causing more disruption than it would be worth. A lot of choices had been made in that short time with information revealed to each player's opponent about the choices they would each make. Simply snapping my fingers and putting the game back to where it was wouldn't undo the knowledge that each player gained, here- you can't "unring" a bell, as they say.
So, that's the thing- I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that this game was rewound, because it wasn't. It's possible that the players themselves decided to re-enact the last few plays that they made on their own, but this had nothing to do with the ruling or my directive.
Thanks.

As of January 1 2002, the Type I Restricted List grew to 50 cards, the largest it had been since the creation of the format. [End Free Excerpt] This... is not right. All Legendary creatures and Legendary lands were at one time Vintage restricted. That's a total of 65 between Legends and Ice Age before that rule was done away with, which is a number not including the restricted cards you are thinking about. The largest the restricted list ever got was actually somewhere around 100 cards. Thanks. Katzby

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Alters for worlds
|
on: August 04, 2013, 05:35:47 am
|
I know the event is a few months away but I got into talking with some friends about alters and legality for worlds. While I know its all the head judges call, I am wondering if people here have any tips on what they try to stay away from on altered cards and if anyone has ever had a problem at Vintage worlds for the alters they played in particular and what the issue with them were. Thanks in advance!
I'm head judging the Vintage Championships this year. First of all, allow me to direct your attention to the some of the wording in policy that covers this: "Artistic modifications are acceptable in sanctioned tournaments, provided that the modifications do not make the card art unrecognizable, contain substantial strategic advice, or contain offensive images. Artistic modifications also may not obstruct or change the mana cost or name of the card." Not that I want to encourage modifications, but I am planning on being pretty lenient. I need to be able to identify the card by its modified artwork, I need to be able to easily verify that the card is real, and I'll need to see that the card isn't marked in its sleeve, but that's pretty much it. Please check with me before the event to avoid any problems later. Modifications that extend to the top of a card have a tendency to bleed over onto the adjacent edge, which marks the card when viewing the deck from the side. I'll be checking for this and plan to disallow those cards. If you have cards like this, the best way to avoid this problem is by double-sleeving with oppositely-oriented sleeves. Thanks. Katzby

For this reason, they have no incentive at all to undo the Reserve List.
I swear I'm not trying to be rude, but like I was saying in my previous post, this is categorically the wrong way to look at things and demonstrates that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation surrounding the reserved list. The assertion that you are making makes it seem like the only reason the reserved list isn't yet abolished has to do with WotC not wanting to do it, but this is demonstrably false. It doesn't matter if WotC has an incentive to reprint reserved cards or not- the fact of the matter is that they can't. In fact, various WotC people have already said multiple times that they would do away with the list if they could, so your statement that they have no incentive to do it is clearly incorrect. So, to clarify, WotC obviously does indeed have a major incentive to undo the reserved list. However, whether or not they want to do this, they just can't. Those in charge are already convinced, it's just that, you know, they can't actually do anything about it. Is everyone at Hasbro convinced, or at least those that can change this policy? Coming on here and telling the good ppl on TMD to give up and shut up about this already 'cuz there is nothing you can do about it, is insulting. I don't just see people crying about the reprint policy, I see people giving good suggestions on how to work around the current policy if it is to remain the way it is. This to me is a good thing. You can be convinced that something is desirable, but, at the same time, still not be able to do it. For example, I'm convinced it would be awesome if I were able to become invisible and could fly, but I can't do either of those things. Again, any discussion here aimed at convincing anybody that reprints are a good idea is wasted effort for the exact same reason. It may be insulting to be told that there's nothing that you can do about something that you hate, but that doesn't somehow change the fact that you can't do anything about it. Saying that there's nothing that can be done is an assertion that's come from Foresythe, Maro, and at least a few others. However, a lot of people in this community seem to be willfully ignorant of this fact as can be seen in the discussions earlier in this thread and elsewhere. Also, I'm part of TMD and the only reason I'm posting is that I'm trying to make things better. I honestly believe that the community would be better if it would collectively leave the issue alone. ...The public reason they gave is that promise, but the real reason that promise was made was to ensure the pyramid that exists with draft and standard as the base leading up to vintage remains intact. I don't believe Drafting existed as a widespread thing at the time the Reserve List was established. I can tell you for a fact that Type II (and by extension, Vintage as an independent format) did not. This is not correct. I played type 2 both before and after the announcement of the reserved list in March of 1996. Here's the usenet post that I first read on 3/4/1996 where somebody copied and pasted the original announcement from wizards.com: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy/msg/dea1a6bbcbe6b678?dmode=sourceFor reference, Pro Tour 1 (New York 96) took place in February of that year, and the format was (modified) standard: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr134So, type 2 was certainly established and at large when the reserved list was originally created. Note that the reprint policy was updated in 2002, which was an update prior to the recent change to "close the promo loophole": http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/rb29Anyway, since I find myself posting in this thread, allow me to editorialize a little. In his AMA, Foresythe basically said, "the reprint policy is not changing, deal with it." However, you'd never know that by reading through this thread. What Foresythe gave is exactly the same answer that he always gives, despite people asking him about it at every opportunity. It is clear that the reserved list is set in stone and further suggestions and assertions about how to fairly reprint reserved cards, what would happen to the secondary market, how great it would be, etc, are utterly useless. The discussion that's taken place in this thread, which includes examples of all of the above and more, is indicative that those participating either aren't listening or just aren't willing to face reality. Furthermore, it seems to me that folks here are making the same old arguments for and against reprinting old staples that everyone on this site has already read countless times. More importantly, part of Foresythe's explanation is and has always been that he and pretty much everybody else at Wizards would change the policy if he and they could, but he and they can't. If the point of the continued discussions on this topic despite a clear indication from Foresythe on policy is to try to convince those in charge to take action, this is misplaced effort. Those in charge are already convinced, it's just that, you know, they can't actually do anything about it. With the hope of affecting any actual change out the window, what possible end does any further speculation or discussion on the topic serve other than to foster false hope, disseminate misinformation, or otherwise belabor the point? It is my position that Vintage and Legacy players just need to let this one go. We'll probably all be better for it. TL;DR: People should put the effort that they are currently putting into discussions regarding the reserved list instead into getting people to stop talking about it. Katzby

This lets you net 1 exiled sorcery per iteration and return copies of Burning Wish or Golden Wish as needed. Between Wishes & Grimoire, you can Decimate repeatedly for more Starfish tokens to feed through Blasting Station and dome opponent. I've remember trying to dream up one of these before, but never finished. Maybe this time I will. Except that you can't wish for exiled cards, which invalidates this solution and I suspect makes this one impossible. Edit: Oh, sorry. Nevermind. Katzby

Ooh, a shoutout! I don't get many of those these days so I have to relish them when they happen. Anyway, my pleasure! I'm glad turnout was pretty good this time and that players, in general, seemed to have fun. Also, thanks to everybody for acknowledging my birthday by singing at me. I actually have every issue of The Duelist and TopDeck and have been considering for quite a while to cut these up with an Exact-O knife and scan the entire archive to be released anonymously on the Internet as a public service. I figure it would take about a weekend's worth of work and access to a darn good scanner.
Anybody have a good idea about how to approach this?

Hello. My name's Abe. I used to be known on the east coast as a Vintage player, though my Magic involvement is mostly limited to judging these days. My interest in Vintage remains, so I am dedicated to getting myself on staff for as many high-profile Vintage events as possible and will do whatever it takes to provide as much coverage of such events as possible.
Here are the results, final standings after Swiss, and all of the decklists from the PT Austin side event. Typing these up was a labor of love for the Vintage community. I have a ton of pictures from the finals and a full play-by-play of all three games that I will be posting when I get more time.
1st Place: Luis Scott-Vargas 2nd Place: Danial Bragg 3rd Place: David Williams (claimed the piece of power prize for the top record with an unpowered deck) 4th Place: Nathen Renner
Note that no list is available for Arthur Blankenship as he dropped before round 1.

Archives / Tournament Announcement Forum / Vintage side event at PT Austin tomorrow, 10/17

Since I didn't see it mentioned elsewhere, I thought I'd point out that there is a sanctioned Vintage tournament as a side event at PT Austin tomorrow, 10/17, starting at 4:00 PM. Top two records receive one piece of power each. There is also a special piece of power prize for the unpowered (Ichorid ) player with the best record. 0 proxies allowed, obviously. I know it's short notice, though it is not exactly my job to advertise for this event. I will do my best to acquire the decklists of the top 8 and get them posted when I can. Katzby

Vroman and Colin are friends. I've scooped to a friend before when I didn't stand much of a chance of getting T8. I'm sure other mambers of a "Team" have worked out prize splits before. It may not be too savory to some people but I happens. The concern here is not that he is scooping to a friend. The concern is that, as Vroman explains, "Colin scoops to me in exchange for free gas money and lunch..." One can conceed to his or her opponent, especially if that opponent is a good friend, but it can't be in exchange for something. From the MIPG: Unsporting Conduct — Bribery and Wagering Definition Bribery occurs when a player offers an incentive to entice an opponent into conceding, drawing, or changing the results of a match, or accepts such an offer. Refer to the Magic Tournament Rules for a more detailed description of what constitutes bribery.
I understand your concern and it is an important matter so thanks for bringing it up. However, I did the math myself and even if I had won our match (damn right I would have ) I wouldn't make it in prize. Therefore I decided to scoop to a friend/teammate which would guarantee him a 1st place finish. He decided to feed me on his own accord after the fact. I know it's semantics but it wasn't "Scoop to me. I'll buy you lunch." The semantics here are quite important, indeed. If what Vroman really meant by "in exchange for" is what you are describing here, then this interaction is perfectly fine and dandy. Katzby

Rd 4 vs Colin Wu - doran control Colin scoops to me in exchange for free gas money and lunch, since he cant make the cut. we played one arduously long test game, which I lost whilst I was learning on the fly how to race/disrupt his similar recursion engines to mine. w this behind me, Im confident that intuition trumps tgoyf, and would play more efficiently in real match. Well. The intention of my response here is not to lecture but rather to educate. I have quite a bit of experience judging vintage events (and non-vintage Magic). For example, I have head judged the last several Star City Games P9 events in addition to being on staff for most of those events in its last few years, so please don’t dismiss what I have to say based on the fact that you’ve never heard of me. Let's first clarify that it is clear that this was an unsanctioned event, given the fact that proxies were involved. However, unsanctioned events don't actually mean that you have carte blanche to do whatever you like that you can't normally do at a sanctioned event. Most vintage proxy tournaments adhere to DCI guidelines in every way with the exception of the support of said proxies; infractions committed at most proxy tournaments are usually still handled by the MIPG. This is so frequently the case that it should probably be considered implicitly understood even if no specific announcement is made by the event’s TO or head judge. So, allow me to ask- did you run the above by the event's TO or any of the judge staff to see if it would be allowed? This is because what you are describing is a blatant example of bribery. If you tried this at a sanctioned REL competitive event, you and your opponent should, by all rights, be DQ'd with no further ifs ands or buts about it. Even if you had managed to get through a sanctioned event without this happening, mentioning it later in a tournament report, as you’ve done here, could easily result in an investigation concluding with disciplinary action being taken by the DCI, (e.g. a suspension). What I am saying is that you probably shouldn't have done this. Whether or not bribery is allowable at a particular unsanctioned event or not in which I were judging OR playing, I know that I would generally be pretty unhappy if a couple of players agreed to this, as described. I recognize that 9 times out of 10, it simply doesn't occur to players that this kind of exchange isn't kosher, so pointing this out is not intended to be an indictment of your moral principals. As I said, my goal here is to educate. However, I'd urge you to think about this a little bit in order to get an understanding of why it is both a DQ-able infraction at a sanctioned event and generally pretty darn unethical behavior. Does it really seem fair to you and within the spirit of the game to offer something outside of the tournament in exchange for a free match win? Katzby
