1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Uba stax, still viable? on: July 15, 2007, 10:31:11 pm
I would like to add my own 2 cents to on the ensnaring bridge topic.  While initially I thought bridge would be a good way to solve some matchups (ichorid, flash, oath, etc...) I found that in testing it was less than opimal.  In addition to all the reasons meadbert gave, bridge is extremely dissynergetic with Karn and Factory, cutting off 2 of your main win conditions.  The fact that Karn was ineffective I found weakened the deck quite a bit as it made me have to find barbarian ring, bazaar, and resolve a crucible, giving my iopponent ample time to deal with the bridge.

As for stax, I also find the card to be a bomb, a turn 1-2 stax is game over for many decks.  However I cut the number down to 3 in the maindeck to make room for a second Karn, a change i am satisfied with.  While Stax is very good, Karn is just plain better.  I have yet to lose after resolving him, and he just ends games.  I cut the Stax, instead of another lock piece, because I find it fills almost the same role as Karn in the deck, ending the game.  Sphere, crucible, and other pieces of the deck all have other roles which are vastly different from those played by Karn and Smokestacks, and often times Karn does the Stacks's job faster, killing off 2 or more moxen in one swoop.

What I would like to know, from meadbert, is how you beat bomberman.  In my limited testing the match is very hard preboard because while I can shut off the combo all they need to do is resolve a mindscensor or 2 to quickly eat away my life total before I can find answers.  Post board I put in words of war (which I have upped to 3 in the board after putting a second Karn in the main) but it always seems to be taken out/stalled by drain before I can deal with the mindscensors.

What are everyone's experiences against bomberman?

@meadbert:  You seem to be very sucessful in your testing, which is great.  I also think that this version of Uba could dominate the meta.

I am running a different sideboard (with ensnaring bridge), but yours seems to be doing well for you.  I was wondering if you could give some insight into the different sideboarding strategies you have using your sideboard to better show the strengths yours has opposed to a different board.

The problem matchups are Ichorid, Oath, Warrens in general and Flash.

Wouldn't Ensnaring Bridge help against all these decks?  They are all creature based kills (assuming Flash isn't using the disciple kill).  It seems like this card is great hate agaisnt all the above decks and would arguably work better in Uba Stax better than 5c stax.

I don't think that grudge should make one completly discard the use of bridge, because as you said, combined with leyline grudge isn't a problem, and additionally youi have welder to bring it back.  I just think that bridge is worth more testing since is is so good against all the "problem matches" you listed.

Thanks for bringing this up!  I love dragon, but have thought about giving it up if extirpate becomes popular, but I'd rather change the deck around than pick up something completely new.

Just a few thoughts: If you're not going with Squee why not take a page from WGDX and add in Read the Runes and Deep Analysis.  Read the Runes is nice because it reduces reliance on bazaar, and Deep Analysis is extremely synergy with bazaar, and RtR.

As far as Bob, isnt it more than a little risky with Titan, Dragon and Trike?  Also I'd replace Animate with Necromancy.  It has the benifit of being castable as an instant, which is good for some Dragon kills, which I think more than makes up for the extra mana cost.

Hey Dan, this is Lorenzo.

Just wanted to say what a great read your report was (you take such amazing notes) and what a pleasure it was to meet you and play against your now (in)famous deck.

Hey Dave,

This is Lorenzo.  Just wanted to say that this was a great report, a real pleasure to read.  I was happy to finally meet you, and had fun during our match, even though you stomped me.  I'm glad that my defeat sped you to a top 8 finish.

Congrats, and I hope we meet again!

The only two real exceptions are Black Lotus and Tolarian Academy,

What about Necropotence/Yawgmoth's Bargain?

But I also agree, the card has great potential, and seems like it could make a good contribution to the vintage arsenal.

Im not sure how your going to play Necromancy "in response" when you cannot play spells or abilites.  The Split Second Mechaninc doesn't make any of your other spells less counterable... but it IS very very powerful.  It means you can Blast something and your opponent cannot respond by welding that thing out.  Or if your opponent plays Memory Jar, it resolves, then they play some other card from thier hand, you could respond to it by Split Second killing the Jar and they will not be able to pop the jar in response to its destruction.    The same applies for Mindslaver.  and it becomes a great tool for destroying a patient triskellion.

I think Split Second practically defines a "good" ability in T1 something that happens RIGHT NOW, where Susspend is a "bad" ability because its a cost right now for some future benefit.

I don't know about you guys, but the split second card we do know about has me excited.  Aside from the examples above I, personally, think the best use for the card would be anti-Tormod's Crypt tech in Dragon, making it much easier to play around that obnoxious card.  Dragon already, sometimes, splashes green for xantids post board so I think this card should be an auto-include.

Thoughts?
