Let this be a lesson to anybody reading this, don't keep shit in your deck box that isn't a part of your deck. Learn from my mistake you don't have to learn it the hard way. Wouldn't a deck check resolve all of that? (if said extra cards were say, unsleeved, or sleeved in a different color?) I've won door prizes, and put them in my deck box, and the Eudo TO/Judge is usually pretty strict in doing it the DCI way except we get our proxies. Did someone rat you out? was there any chance that your SB could be confused with those extra cards? Keep in mind, my extra cards were door prizes, not trade fodder. but still. That ruling seemed harsh. The justice league article on StarCity today touched on this topic a bit. http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/misc/17270_The_Justice_League_Top_Penalties.htmlHow often do you watch your opponent sideboard and/or count the cards in there board? My guess is that your answer is close to never. Your paying attention to your own sideboard. The reason this infraction is penalized with a game loss at competitive events is because of how abuseable it is to have extra cards in your sideboard, and because a harsh penalty ensures that the player that receives the penalty will learn not to do it again. In this case Matt chose to share his lesson with every one. Good. Having extra cards with the sideboard is something a lot of players do. At an FNM it would only be a warning but at a competitive event players need to know not to do that. We use deck checks as a device to find problems like this. Being unsleeved or in different sleeves doesn't negate the abuse factor. (players often resleeve cards when sideboarding). Even if the sidebard is identifyable from the extra cards when checking the deck your opponent is not likely to notice the extra cards and wouldn't know which even belonged in your board.

If you already knew about the earlier infraction, why ask? It does seem like you're trying to trap the player.
When assigning a penalty Judges try to maintain the habit of asking the player if they received any prior infractions. This is important at large events with lots of staff to ensure upgrades are applied correctly. In this case Jeremy and I were just informing each other of any penalties. I asked only out of habit. Players should be aware that penalties are tracked in the tournament software and if you lie to a Judge it won’t take long for someone to notice. Well yes, I know all that. But the way you posted, it made it sound like you had checked, but asked anyway. That seems like it only exists to trap the player. That's why I said "I don't want to sound like I was trying to trap you". I know I can't say I allready knew about the prior penalty without it sounding like I was fishing for a DQ. But there was no motivation for the question. It was simply a force of habit.

I assume "DQ" here actually means "receive a Game Loss"? Otherwise, what the hell is going on? The upgrade path for Game Rules Violations is Warning - Warning - Game Loss - Match Loss before it would ever get to that point.
I don't think the judge was clear enough here then. I know it was only my second infraction of the day and he made it seem like I would be kicked out of the tournament if I did it again. That's why I played at a snail's pace for the rest of the finals. At one point I make the mistake again of dredging for 6 instead of 5 on a Stinkweed. It was the freaking second time I mistook it for a Troll. Anyways, the judge comes over and asks me if I had gotten any warnings for the same action earlier in the day. I manned up and said "yes, I did the exact thing in an earlier match." He informs me that I have a second warning for the same action. If I make that mistake again, I will be DQ'd from the entire tournament. That is not something I wanted to do, seeing how I made it that far. I don't think that DQ was ever mentioned. You would have had to commit that infraction 3 more times for that to happen. It was stated that if you committed that infraction again it would be upgraded to a more severe penalty. If you interpreted that as DQ then I probably wasn't clear and I am sorry. If you did do it again the penalty would have been upgraded to a game loss. When you were asked if you had gotten any earlier warning you were required to tell the truth (lying to a judge will get a player DQ'd). I don't want to sound like I was trying to trap you but I already knew about the prior penalty. Anyway Congrats on an excellent finish.

I personally see this as a slap in the face of the Vintage format. I also suspect that the lawyer who sent this letter doesn't realize what he has done in terms of its implications for Vintage.
I don't think this has anything to do with Vintage. Yeah the reason we use proxies is because the cards can be hard to find and are expensive, but this issue is about WotC IP and only about the IP. On that note I do hope that someone at WotC sees this issue and Vintage gets more attention as a result.

"418.5. Interaction of Continuous Effects
418.5a The values of an object’s characteristics are determined by starting with the actual object, then applying continuous effects in a series of layers in the following order: (1) copy effects (see rule 503, “Copying Objects”); (2) control-changing effects; (3) text-changing effects; (4) type-changing effects (which includes effects that change an object’s card type, subtype, and/or supertype); (5) all other continuous effects, except those that change power and/or toughness; and (6) power- and/or toughness-changing effects. Inside each layer from 1 through 5, apply effects from characteristic-defining abilities first, then all other effects in timestamp order. Inside layer 6, apply effects in a series of sublayers in the following order: (6a) effects from characteristic-defining abilities; (6b) all other effects not specifically applied in 6c, 6d, or 6e; (6c) changes from counters; (6d) effects from static abilities that modify power and/or toughness but don’t set power and/or toughness to a specific number or value; and (6e) effects that switch a creature’s power and toughness. Within each sublayer, apply effects in timestamp order. Note that dependency may alter the order in which effects are applied within a layer or sublayer. See also the rules for timestamp order and dependency (rules 418.5b–418.5g). " Karn's ability is applied in layer 6a, which sets a mox to 0/0, master of etherium's static ability is applied in 6c, making the mox a 1/1. You mean to say "Karn's ability is applied in layer 6b, which sets a mox to 0/0, master of etherium's static ability is applied in 6d, making the mox a 1/1." right?

I have spoken to several players who are thinking about building the new Tezzeret combo into a control frame. Several of them have been mulling over adding red for Goblin Welder and blasts. However my idea for the deck is UB.
Control 4x Mana Drain 4x Force of Will 4x Thoughtseize
Card Draw 4x Thirst for Knowledge 1x Fact or Fiction 1x Ancestral Recall 1x Brainstorm
Tutors 1x Gifts Ungiven 1x Vamp Tutor 1x Mystical Tutor 1x Demonic Tutor 1x Merchant Scroll
Bombs 3x Tezzeret 1x Time Vault 1x Voltaic Key 1x Yawgs will 1x Tinker 1x Darksteel Collossus
Misc 1x Echoing Truth 1x Time Walk
Mana 7x SoLoMoxen 1x Mana Crypt 1x Tolarian Academy 1x Academy Ruins 1x Library of Alexandria 2x Flooded Strand 4x Polluted Delta 4x Underground Sea 5x Island
Sideboard 3x Spell Snare 3x Extirpate 2x Tormod's Crypt 2x Pithing Needle 1x Hurkyl's Recall 1x Rebuild 1x Chain of Vapor
I have not done any play testing yet as this list is just a draft. I'm going to try an aggressive mana base to ensure that Tezz can be hard cast early and a strong control base. Mana Drain is a good control card that can help drop the decks 5 mana win card. The sideboard is a throw together and subject to much change.
So what ideas for this deck have others come up with?
Edit updated the list. Gifts Ungiven looks strong being able to grab 2 recursive parts (Yawgs Will, Academy Ruins) and 2 combo parts(Time Vault,Voltaic Key) . Though Ruins looks a bit week for a Gifts package.

The prizes are paid out the way they are because my goal for this event is for everyone to have a good time and everyone enjoys winning prizes. I never cared for awarding prizes only to the top 8. It sucks to get 9 – 12th place and get 6-10 bucks worth of stuff.
Kowal is correct about the prizes. I worked a deal with the store I’m hosting this event in that works on very similar numbers. This will allow me to give out far more value in prizes than I take in. It is my intention that this arrangement will provide good prizes (more that you paid to play) to the top half.
I can understand what is being said about no moxen but please understand that every dollar taken in is given back as prizes. I make no money here. If your looking at Value the 4 Drains at low end would average about 85 each. That’s about $340 total.
If this all goes well I should be able to run a second tournament for an Unlimited Mox Emerald (minty) in the near future.

How many Workshops do you need to run to get the Crypt? 4 in the maindeck? For this event you will need 4 Workshops in the main deck for the crypt. That's a huuuge drop off. Is there a 3/4 playoff at least? If can I will increase the store credit for 4th place. If I get enough players 4th may also get a Drain or daullands. I will be running a 3/4 playoff. How does $25 entry fee generate $30 in credit? Are you relying on sales to break even?
I have worked a deal with the store I'll be running this event in that allows me to give 120% back in prizes. I will personally make no money on this event regardless of how many people show up. My only motivation is to run a good event and see everyone have a good time in the hopes that if this event works well we will run more.

Your stax game must be good also, with 6 Kataki? Just pointing out a typo.
Do you really need 4 Jitte? I should think that for an aggro deck, even a vintage one 3 should work fine. What has your playtesting showed? Do you sit on extra Jitte?
Same for the grunt.
I really like having Barbarian ring in my red aggro decks. The ability to deal 2 damage from a colorless source can be important.
