Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Dance Magic Dance -- Blue White Fact or Fiction /Spirit of the Labyrinth Control

Academy is the literal worst, except when it's bananas. I'm of the opinion that the "it's bananas" times outnumber the "it's a brick" instances.
I think we all agreee that Academy adds a bit of variance to the draws, openers especially. The big question is whether the good outweigh the bad. Maybe my experience is limited, but it seems that Academy is only really good if you have it in the opener with at least two artifacts. I also think the stoneforge version is a little easier on the academy, as you get more artifacts. See my report for a recent list.
I still like the thinking behind spirit, and that card in the tournament definitely did what it was supposed to do: Shore up some of the weak matchups, namely Gush decks. Stoneforge definitely is better against creature decks, but against these the rest of the deck already seems well positioned. (Rehashing the obvious, I know)

I gave the deck a try at our local tournament this weekend. Since I came across the list only very recently there was no prior testing involved. I used the maindeck from the OP and modified the sideboard since we have basically no dredge. My result was an okay-ish 3-2, but one thing I noticed: Tolarain Academy to me on average seemed worse then a basic island resp. a fourth Tundra. The deck does not run that many artifacts, so the scenario where Academy is better than an island - 2+ Moxen in play - did not occur that often. On the other hand there is a real chance to draw it without any artifacts at all. Has anyone else made similar experiences, or was this a statistical anomaly due to low sample size?

Yeah, that's exactly what I was saying. I have tried needles x4 - and null rod x4. Hurkylls can answer both as can chewers. If you stop the EEs, the bolts/factoies win. If you stop the factories, the EE's kill the needles. Wasting the manlands do nothing as you drop crucible and have 15+ counters to force it through. It's funny that you beat the mirror - that means landstill can't lose to anything except on the account of bad luck - including to itself!
Try Thrun the Last Troll.

Sounds pretty poor...I have tested tolaria west and academy ruins in landstill lists with EE. It was fun and cute when it worked but almost unnecessary...
Problem with map is u need to cut a spell for it. Where tolaria is a land and. In worst case scenario it can be played as a land and not a fetch to get a EE or a toolbox or other lands...
You are likely right with that assessment. I just wanted to mention that map has one distinct advantage over Tolaria West: It only costs colorless mana, and only one of the three it consumes need to be spent at sorcery speed.

One more question that came up in my testing: How do you play with SCV against regular Tezzeret (with Confidants)? Supposedly this matchup is at least slightly favourable, or isn't it? In particular do you try to play around Mana Drain? Or do you wait until Tezzeret taps down or you have at leats some counter backup (which with only 5 counters in the maindeck might be a long wait).
In my opinion SCV is far more sorcery based than Tezzeret (in particular once Tezeret has managed to land a Confidant), so the waiting game would definitely favour Tezzeret. On the other hand trying to overload Tezzeret's counters would mean walking into Mana Drain, and that extra mana can have quite the unwanted side effect.

I am just starting to become familiar with the deck, so one specific question to those of you that have been playing it for longer.
In our Metagame U/G/W Fish (also called Noble Fish) has a very strong presence. And besides all the usual Problems Fish can pose for SCV, Noble Fish presents yet another obstacle: Quasali Pridemage. Before boarding he simply has to be dealt with if you want to combo off with Vault/Key, and the only solution in the deck is a single Fire/Ice. Alternatives include welding the destroyed combo piece back in or tinkering for Inkwell, but I was wondering if there are better solutions for this problem. Maybe add a second Fire/Ice to the maideck?

Some people might also realize that they are not the best player in the room.
If I want to maximize my chances of success at a tournament where I am sure that better skilled players attend I would avoid mirror matches with them if possible, since usually that is where the skill gap is most prominent.
Instead, why not play the metagame lottery and choose a Tier 2 deck with good matchups against as large as possible a portion of the expected field, and hope to get lucky with the pairings?

Since I am not that familiar with Oath decks, could someone please explain why Chalice of the Void is generally considered an auto-include, at least in the disruption heavier versions?
Obviously you don't want to play them at 2. At 1 they may be useful, but with 4+ Duress effects, Ponder, vampiric etc. they are at least against non-combo Decks very symmetrical. At 0 they are only really good on the play.

Also I like to run Null Rod somewhere in my 75.
I second this. Even with 4 Duress Effects, 4 Negates, and 4 Force of Will in the Deck Null Rod is necessary to bring the matchup percentage against Vault/Key Control and Combo to acceptable levels. I also find Null Rood to be much better at this than Chalice, which with all the 1cc spells in the deck a lot of times is far too symmetrical for my taste. In my experience the hard part in Oath's gameplan is to actually get Oath to trigger (and sometimes to prevent a combo finish from the opponent before the Dragon(s) have connected two times). Drawing Blessing before this is not that helpful, and Impulse also does a decent job at preventing yourself from decking yourself.

Something somewhat unrelated: How dou you play against Mystic Remora with TPS? In Testing I have not managed to come up with a really good strategy.
Do you just hope the don't draw into a pitch counter with all the extra cards they are drawing? What if they have two blue mana open? A general guideline here would be much appreciated.

1)Against Leyline: Ancestral Black Lotus Ponder Lotus Petal Tendrils Assuming you haven't done anything but activated Druid this turn this would give you 5 storm (depending on what's 2 cards deeper with ponder showing you tendrils and 2 blanks) this is not a win. It is. Remember that with Leyline for the opponent and wheel on your side you can choose for each card, which replacement effect to apply. So you remove everything except those 5. Any Spell you play afterwards is put to the bottom of the library (if you choose so), allowing you to loop through Ancestral - Lotus - Ponder - Petal until you have the Mana and storm necessary for the kill.

I have two questions regarding Soly's List: 1) Why is Strategic Planning better than Impulse? 2) Is Careful Study really better than Sleight of Hand? Both give you direct access to the better of the two cards on top of your library. Careful Study has an advantage if both cards are really good, but otherwise it just costs you a card. I am aware that this is probably not the deck for long, drawn out attrition wars, but nevertheless if card-disadvantage can be avoided why not? I really like the inclusion of Null Rod in this deck.

2: When's the last time anyone played Painter-Grindstone? Last tourney I was at I watched 2 fully powered Tez builds lose to a practically budget Painter Combo deck loaded with hate and Goblin Welders. In case you forgot, Painter-Grindstone is another 'opps I win' 2 card combo that costs a tiny bit more colorless mana. Both combo pieces are unrestricted and only 1 is a dead draw, the other enables REB's to a superior effect. The price for this combo is also like 1/10th of the price. Where was all the restriction talk before Time Vault? I promise you if Time Vault wasn't re-errated these same people would be here complaining about Painter's combo. If Time Vault is axed then Painter-Grindstone is ready and willing to take it's place, I'd give it 6 months before we start seeing the same discussion again.
Not quite. If you want to beat Painter you can simply add a single Gaea's Blessing to your sideboard, and you significatnly improve your post-board win percentage. You could even play it maindeck if you have some Green in your manabase. There is no single card that can improve the Vault+Key matchup that drastically, in particular since you do not even need to draw the Blessing to take effect (actually you don't even want to).

From the ICBM Open #64. Tommy Kolowith Draw-Go 1 Tormod's Crypt 4 Mana Drain 4 Ophidian 1 Brainstorm 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Mystical Tutor 2 Fire/Ice 1 Time Walk 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Wipe Away 1 Fact or Fiction 4 Force of Will 3 Thirst for Knowledge 4 Chalice of the Void 4 Rune Snag 3 Volcanic Island 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Sol Ring 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Emerald 6 Island 1 Tolarian Academy 4 Polluted Delta 2 Flooded Strand 3 Glen Elendra Archmage SB: 2 Sower of Temptation 1 Tinker 1 Darksteel Colossus 3 Tormod's Crypt 2 Rack and Ruin 3 Blood Moon 1 Ingot Chewer 1 Pyroclasm 1 Trinisphere Seems the best win condition is one that can counter stuff - twice. One of the cards I do not understand, though, is the single Tormod's Crypt in the maindeck, with no way to tutor for it. It would be great if Tommy could comment on his list.

Let's see, wastes came in rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. So I think I decided against bringing them in for my Slaver mirror, but I might be wrong and maybe they came in there too. That card is good!
Hmm, why not maindeck them then?

Have you thought about replacing the Duresses with Mana Leaks (Or maybe another U1 counter like Negate)? They would be able to affect the game early on without having to fetch an Underground Sea.

With PoN in the build, we should be able to kill instantly, in response of the pact's delayed trigger ability. So we should play 4 necromancy and Oona/Witness or Kumano kills. Most likely I have misunderstood you (or just missed something), but how can you kill instantly with Oona?

|

Naturally, the take-home lesson here is not to take risks with bad matchups. I still believe that the odds were on my side going into the tournament, with 0 Ichorid decks having been played the month prior, and only 2 Ichorid players in attendance then. Actually I think you are contradicting yourself with these two sentences. You most likely made the right decision, as you chose the sideboard configuration that gave you the highest chance at winning the tournament. However probability is a fickle thing, and this time things did not work out in your favour. This does not mean your decision was wrong. Frank Karsten wrote an excellent article on that topic here.
