1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Top 8 in Breda playing GAT on: December 16, 2007, 09:05:03 pm
Here is my issue with Trygon predator:
It comes out on your turn and does nothing. Your have an entire turn to completely wreck you or find an answer to it. It doesn't work until your next attack phase and then it has to do deal damage. Also, it can be blocked by anything with flying. I think energy flux is a more solid choice because once it hits and you pass the turn they have to find an answer or pay up. Most of the time they sac a lot to the flux. I see flux doing a lot more damage and probably saving your life more often than predator. Also another thing the bothers me about trygon is the the casting cost. You have to find two colors for it. I know it's not too hard with the fetches and such but i have found times with the deck when i'm dieing for green or for black. The single blue means that you can cast it through a magus of the moon. Also, on the off chance you have a lotus, you can cast it off that.

I'm a huge fan of Tog so i leave him in Very Happy but probably only a one of.

i'm not completely sold on adding another color for red because i am already worried about the stability of the mana base especially with all the stax variants running around. That rules out REB and Empty the Warrens for me.

I'm not completely sold on tendrils but it's definitely something i want to test out.

All in all, i enjoyed the report, i'm trying to get into type 1 again and i've always loved playing psychatog based decks (at least decks where i can win with tog).

You're right moxlotus my mistake Embarassed next time i'll read the oracle text.
my other arguments still stand though
2  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: UW FISH: Teh Primer! on: February 21, 2007, 03:46:47 pm
i decided to make a list of things to meddling mage because it is one of the most important cards in this deck. I found a post a while ago where i got my information but a can't seem to find the link. You have to know what you're playing against and with all the variations of decks out there it's so hard to tell. Also remember that mage is a very situational card and it depends what is going on that that moment in the game. Now here is my list:

a. Ubastax
1.   Goblin Welder
2.   Crucible of Worlds

b. 5c Stax (any difference between the card named in the uba matchup?)
1.   crucible of worlds

c. Control Slaver (if dry slaver you would probably go for gifts)
1.   Thirst for Knowledge
2.   Tinker

d. Meandeck Gifts
1.   gift's ungiven
2.   Yawmoth's will
3.   Old man of the sea
4.   Tinker (not so much anymore)

e. Most Long Variants
1.   yawgmoth's will
2.   Dark Ritual

h. Sullivan Solution
1.   Dark Confidant
2.   Dimir Cutpurse

i. U/W Feinstein Fish
1.      Extremely Situational

j. Worse Than Gro
1.   Vinelasher Kudzu
2.   Wild Mongrel

k. Workshop Aggro (you saw Juggernauts, etc in game one)
1.   Juggernaut
2.   Crucible of Worlds
3.   Triskelion

l. Bomberman (traditional build)
1.   trinket mage
2.   Auriok Salvagers

m. Oath
1.   Oath (this is a given)
2.      Mana Drain

o. Dragon X
1.   Necromancy
2.   Deep Analysis

Also if you have to blind call a mage and you see an island it's probably a good bet to name mana drain just because it's used in so many decks. Any suggestions are open to discusion and remember this is a general outline.

Once again Dave, another great tournament report as a fellow fish player (actually I am Lorenzo's friend : ) ) i find your reports extremely useful. I wasnt able to post your results though coming against a pitch long deck in round 4 wrecked me. Prior to that i played 3 bomberman decks in a row (beating 2 of them loosing one to a top deck war) I was doing well in the free mana drain tournment until i came up against Dan Yarington and his The Mountain Wins Again deck. I hope you continue to play the deck. I will continue playing it because i don't have the money to play much else  Wink .

hey Dan this is Kurt of the epic game. I just want to say that when you first sat down across from me i thought to my self "who is this guy in a suit, he's probably playing some completely broken deck" little did i know you were Dan Yarington of Myriad games. When i found out you were playing The Mountains Win again i was not too pleased. Game one most certainly was epic. the match had ran for an annoyingly long time because we both kept using our grunt's to recycle the STP  Confused . Day two i was still reeling from that match and came up against The Mountain Wins Again, again but was able to pull ahead only to be stopped by an oath.  You said you wanted to play U/W fish all day, i hope i gave you the results you wanted  Wink.

P.S. Thanks for the die and the foil island (which is now in my fish deck)
