The Kickstarter hit a big milestone today, breaking above $50,000 inside the first week since launch. I am in talks with Cascade to secure a (small) booth at the event and look forward to meeting anyone that can make it out there for the show. I'll be selling mats and tokens and likely try and run/sponsor a few special events as well. www.classicarttokens.comI am so excited to be here already and I hope we can get to the next set of Stretch Goals soon. I have even more great things lined up and it will be amazing once we get there.

The Classic Art Token Kickstarter is well under way. 100% funded in under 3 hours 200% funded under 6 300% funded in 9 On track to hit 400% funding in under 12 hours. Outstanding is not a good enough word to describe my current reaction. www.classicarttokens.com5 Stretch Goals have already been hit and we are just about to hit #6 and unlock two more Playmat designs. Will we hit all of my initial Stretch Goals in the first 24 hours? It certainly looks possible. (Don't worry, I have many more planned)

Very cool idea.
super curious to know how copyright works on these. My (very basic) understanding was that you could take a picture and be free and clear to make reproductions, but if you are using an image someone else created that would infringe on their work. Were you able to obtain open source/licensed copies/make your own original images, or are you banking on the source material being out of copyright?
So, for most countries, the copyright owned by the artist expires 70 years after their death, then entering the public domain. So if you were able to take a picture of it, or make a copy, after that date, there is no copyright preventing you from selling it etc. Now once you start talking about using photos and digital images of artwork in the public domain, things get complicated. In some countries, there is no copyright granted for a reproductive photograph, in some cases there are limited copyrights, some grant full. So you are correct that in some cases, in some countries, you would indeed be infringing on their photo. I may not agree with that concept, but such is life. For this project I ensured that each image is obtained from either a license free, attribution required or licensed (for a small fee) source. It took a few iterations of selecting usable images and several pieces that I want to use are off limits, but the project is good to go. I'd propose a list if you are interested. I don't know if I would be able to include it in this project, but I would be very interested in seeing what you think should go into a Cube Token list.

I considered making a Cube collection and a EDH / Commander set as well. The only problem was figuring what tokens and how many to include as literally any token in any amount could be needed depending on the cube / deck. There is an option for a Full Set which will get you one of each token as well as package deals and add ons to customize your reward as needed.
Some changes had to be made in naming the tokens for copyright purposes. Robots are generic, Myr are WotC IP. There may be some wiggle room if you really wanted to push it, but it wasn't worth the risk.
I definitely considered adding Emblem "tokens" but don't have one planned as of yet.

Hey everybody, Josh here with something that I'm excited to show you all. On February 2nd, I will be launching the Classic Art Token project on Kickstarter. If you follow me on twitter/facebook you're probably sick of hearing about it by now, but if you are new to the project, I highly recommend checking it out: Classic Art Token KickstarterOne of the reward levels for the project is a collection of tokens specifically built for Vintage players. Here is the breakdown of what tokens are in the Vintage Collection: - 2/2 Bird x1
- 2/2 Drake x4
- 1/1 Elemental x6
- 0/0 Germ x1
- 1/1 Goblin x4
- 3/3 Golem x2
- 1/1 Monk x4
- 20/20 Mr. Lage x1
- Poison Counter x1
- 1/1 Robot x4
- 1/1 Spirit (not flying) x3
- Storm Counter x1
- 1/1 Thopter x4
- 2/2 Wolf x2
- 3/3 Wurm DT x1
- 3/3 Wurm LL x1
- 2/2 Zombie x8
I built the collection to provide a comprehensive set of tokens for anyone playing competitive Vintage. If the project is able to hit its Stretch Goals, the Collections will increased to 54 cards. I was planning on adding 2 Pack Rat Tokens and 3 Squid Tokens, but that still leaves one slot undecided. Take a look at the project, join the Thunderclap if you really like it, and let me know what you think the last Stretch Goal token in the Vintage collection should be.

Eternal Formats / Northeast U.S. / Vintage Artist Constructed at Eternal Weekend
|
on: August 16, 2015, 07:23:31 pm

Hey everybody, TMD's resident Art guy here. To marry my two passions, Vintage and Magic Art, I created a new format called Vintage Artist Constructed. You can read more about it here. Working with Nick Coss, I was able to set up a time during Eternal Weekend where anyone interested can play the best format yet, with free entry and a piece of Magic art on the line. Saturday, 4PM $0 Entry Prize is a preliminary sketch of Simian Spirit Guide by Dave DeVries, created when it was initally envisioned as a Minotaur. The first ever event was at GP Vegas with 18 people and I hope to have even more players at Eternal Weekend. I created a Facebook Event for anyone that is interested, which will give me an idea of how much other free swag I should bring along to give out. See you in Philly!

MTGO Traders, The Card Nexus and many other sellers have noticed a sharp up tick in people liquidating their collections after this change, to the point that they are officially worried. Some buyers have stopped buying collections all together.
If things do not change and change quickly, a death spiral could be triggered as the rats desert the sinking ship.
The fact that the people selling were well establish players makes it more unlikely that any bandaids will bring them back. There would need to be fundamental fixes to the program to restore confidence, something that Wizards has been eternally unable or unwilling to accomplish in the past.
I'm sure the team there is incredulous, believing that the people leaving are overreacting to the Play Points change, but their echo chamber completely ignores their horrendous track record and the abysmal state of their program. I'm sure they all think that everything is normal and this is all just going to blow over, because everyone has been willing to stick around after all their other mistakes and broken promises.
If that truly is the case, they are gravely underestimating the impact that the loss of dedicated, heavily invested players has on their product. I have lower than zero confidence that they are taking this with the appropriate seriousness and even less that they are willing or able to turn back the tide.
The complete lack of communication or understanding from Worth and friends is par for the course.
Had I any faith in Worth and team to fix this, any increase in panic would likely be a great buying opportunity, but they have failed so often and with such blatant lack of humility in their admission of said failures that there is no way I would risk more than I already have invested in this train wreck of a program.
Sorry for the rant. At this point I'm just flailing around, trying to find a reason to not to sell out as well (if I can even still find a buyer).

I actually like the idea of the play points, as a concept. It gets people to play more Magic. Yes, keeping them untradeable is not ideal but if they were the gambling concerns pop up again.
If they had introduced them and not reduced the payouts, I'm all for the changes. I think the pack prices will benefit from this change, but I doubt it will get anywhere near the $3.50 mark they appear to be targeting with 2 man events.
Why they don't just offer all prizes in play points and make them redeemable in the store I'll never know. Keep them untradeable, fine, but if they are going to be fungible, let them be fungible gosh darnit.

Objectively, yes, the Burst Lightning was the correct pick.
In the real world, you are passing up almost as much as the 2nd place prize, which is insane to let go.
I understand the struggle and most of the commentary may just be friendly ribbing. He did a great thing by offering half of the proceeds to GHG.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Vintage with a Twist at GP Vegas

If you are already planning on attending GP Vegas, you may want to consider bringing another deck for the free tournament I am running at the event. You can find the details here. The format of the tournament is what I'm calling Vintage Artist Constructed. You'll need a Vintage Deck, but with the additional restriction that the cards be illustrated by a single artist, basic lands included. Before you declare the artists that illustrated power the champions, you'll want to check out their mana bases first. You might be surprised. Several artists have some pretty strong deck possibilities, but none are obviously dominant (although Christopher Moeller is borderline). I think this will be a fun event and brewing for the tournament should present a fun challenge for you, if nothing else. I look forward to seeing what everyone brings and meeting y'all in Vegas.

While I was roaming around Reddit, I came across a post about LEDs. My first thought was "Why are they talking about Lion's Eye Diamonds on r/science?".
After chuckling at myself, I found I enjoyed the idea of juxtaposing the double meanings in Magic terminology vs. Real Life. I think it could make a fun article and thought I would open up the question to the fine folks of TMD.
What are some of your favorite discrepancies between meanings of words and/or phrases in Magic vs. Real Life?

Don't we already have Vedalken Engineer?
I don't think 2 extra toughness and the ability to tutor up some very likely useless equipment is going to make a difference.
I do find it interesting that they have a tutor effect for a specific card on an Uncommon. It really feels that they are moving away from the core tenants of NOW, some of these commons have lines and lines of text on them, not exactly the streamlined simplicity that they have produced before.
