1  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SCD] Enlightened tutor on: January 28, 2013, 11:06:26 am
I use an enlightened tutor in my Kobold deck to search for skullclamp and carnival of souls, but only after adding Demonic, Vampiric, Consultation, and two copies of Steelshaper's Gift.  That said, I'd rather I owned an Imperial Seal.

Sorry for the unproductive post, but I just have to say thank you for pointing that out, it's very cool!

You should be using Barbarian Ring.
4  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Biomass Mutation on: January 09, 2013, 11:43:48 pm
I did notice one interesting thing about this card actually....if for some reason you wanted to swipe your own board...you can do this where X=0, and kill all your creatures?

Don't know how this could be good (outside of something obscure like Protean Hulk/Academy Rector), but none the less is interesting that you can....

You can respond to Oath activation by killing your own Forbidden Orchard tokens!  And if that fails, Ray of Command their fatty and Mutate it!  Sideboard bomb for Oath.
5  Eternal Formats / Vintage Deck Discussion / Re: Need lots of help: Back into vintage on: January 08, 2013, 11:03:18 am
So it looks like the strategy is to use lots of mana denial, prevent them from attacking with ensnaring bridge/Blazing Archon, and then eventually run then over?

1) I don't think you have a very good win condition.  Blazing Archon may go the distance, but you have no way to remove the opponent's creatures.  I would like to see you add Vault/Key or even Leyline/Helm or Painter/Grindstone.  Then you can win without attacking.  The latter combo is half Oathable also.

2) Dwarven Miner and Magus both have the property that they are unnecessary in multiples.  Furthermore, they are antisynergistic-- Dwarven Miner can't destroy a basic mountain.  You don't need four of each.  In fact, as cool as Dwarven Miner is, I would say you should cut them entirely and instead run Wasteland and Crucible, since this is free while Dwarven Miner is expensive.

3) You should either add Force of Will or more hand denial (duress?) for early protection.

4) You should probably add Demonic Tutor.

5) You should add some way to deal with artifacts and creatures.  You have a 5c mana base, so this shouldn't be too hard.  Izzet Charm is good but can't remove a Smokestack or Golem.

6) I think you should remove Timetwister and Wheel of Fortune.  Your opponent will more often get more value out of it than you.  It is also bad with Ensnaring Bridge, if you draw seven and pass the turn.

Hopefully that will get you started?
6  Eternal Formats / Ritual-Based Combo / Re: Empty Wishes, Viable Storm Deck? on: January 02, 2013, 02:09:54 pm
If you're sticking with monored, maybe you should try Overmaster  Very Happy
7  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: - Illusionist's Bracers on: January 01, 2013, 01:49:12 pm
Welder doesn't work like that.  It reads "tap: exchange target artifact for a target artifact in its controllers graveyard."  So doubling the ability means that two artifacts go to the graveyard, and two come back.

Mana filters like Skyshroud Elf don't work either, because the equipment states it doesn't work on mana abilities.
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Looking for help on these unique card thoughts on: December 19, 2012, 04:42:52 am
Has anyone seen Oath of Druid into Blazing Archon????

I'm wondering what is hurting this type of clock?

Yes, that was used about 5 years ago when Archon came out, now it's never used as there are probably 10 better options.

could you help update me.

Griselbrand -> tendrils
Tidespout Tyrant -> brainfreez or tendrils
BSC with tinker and dragon breath
Emakrul with show and tell and dragon breath
Iona, Sheild of Emeria ->name blue or opponent's primary color and just lock them out
Terestadon -> blow up their lands and then oath again, or blow up your own oath and have 18 damage on the board
Laboratory Maniac -> oath a second time to an empty deck and draw nothing for the win
Rune Scared Demon -> timewalk/yawgwill/regrowth/vault-key and just infinite turns after oathing

There's probably more, but these are the big ones I can remember.

wow...thank you. That was very nice of you.

I knew some of those. The blazing archon was for against dredge.

Terestadon is my first choice. Im wonder if emrakul hits if there is a creature with a triggered effect or static ability that would stll or get rid of emrakul.

Someone in a neighboring thread had a Rathi Trapper in his deck for just such an occurrence.  He had a Royal Assassin in there too.
9  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Mono White Hatebears - Post RTR on: November 14, 2012, 10:33:46 pm
You should use True Believer vs. Oath and Storm.  And maybe some copies of Preacher since you're monowhie.
10  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: White Trash! on: October 29, 2012, 10:10:15 am
Yeah, I guess I tend to agree.  I still think True Believer deserves a spot in the 75 though.

Maybe Weathered Wayfarer?  Since you have to run more lands than many decks, it may not work, but it might be worth a little testing.  Searching for Wastes, or Karakas or Maze of Ith vs Oath would be pretty useful.

Icatian Javelineers used to be anti-Welder tech, these days you might consider it vs Confidant and other weenies.
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: White Trash! on: October 29, 2012, 08:57:39 am
Have you considered Dryad Militant as a 1-drop?  Or Aether Vial?

True Believer would help your Oath and Storm matchups.
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Nether Void Aggro on: October 09, 2012, 09:45:07 pm
Played this on Cockatrice.  Very inconsistent.  Very rarely did I have a good opening hand.  Mana flooded frequently.

Fun idea, but I have to file it under "cute" in the Rolodex.  Cute decks are fun, but sexy wins.

This is also my main concern; by focusing on a T1 void you have to put so much mana that you will get flooded regularly; and even the god hand of Caverns -> Thalia -> Void leaves you with little more than a 2/1 on the table, potentially giving your opponent a lot of time to find answers.

How often do you find yourself taking mulligans?

EDIT: How does the deck fare when you don't draw Void/Sphere?
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Nether Void Aggro on: October 08, 2012, 01:53:16 pm
I honestly think that the strategy of getting Nether Void into play turn 1 is too costly in that you have to run far too many mana sources to be able to pull it off consistently.  Those are slots that could be used for more disruption.  And I think the green creatures you have are just too vanilla to be worth it (except maybe ESG).  My first shot at a deck like this would be:

4 Thoughtsieze
2 Duress
4 Nether Void

4 Thalia
4 Dark Confidant
3 True Believer
4 Tidehallow Sculler
3 Aether Vial

Demonic Tutor
Vampiric Tutor
Demonic Consultation
(maybe fit in an Imperial Seal if you own one)
2 Rest In Peace
1 Disenchant
1 Swords to Plowshares

Mox Jet
Mox Pearl
Sol Ring
Black Lotus
Mana Crypt
Strip Mine
1 Chrome Mox
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Wasteland
4 Scrubland
4 Marsh Flats
1 Swamp
1 Plains

This list will still be soft to creatures and might not fare quite as well vs shops, but seems better vs oath, big blue, and dredge.  I don't understand why you're not running the full tutor package.  At the very least replace one of your Nether Voids with a tutor, since you never need more than 1 in play.

I would like to fit in another 2 Moxen/Rituals if possible, and I'm torn between Aether Vial and Null Rod since you can't really run both.  If I took out the Vials I'd probably ake out the Scullers for Mishra's Factories.  I'm also concerned that 15 creatures is not enough.  But that's what I'd start with.

Good luck with the deck-- it would make my day to have someone post good results with Nether Void again Smile
14  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Deadbridge Goliath on: August 24, 2012, 06:35:17 pm
I honestly believe that this mechanic giving: +3/+3 for C, +7/+7/ for CC, and +20/+20 for CCC would all see vintage play.

The first would only see play if it was attached to an aggressive beater, +3/+3 at sorcery speed is just not good enough. You'll always want evasion or utility over vanilla, even with the after-death boost effect.
A vanilla 3/3 for G would see Vintage play. Feel free to quote that forever.

I don't even know about this.  A vanilla 3/3 would only take down one Guli bear in a fair fight, and doesn't have the extra utility.  Goyf takes down at least two, and Delver doesn't care.  With Moxen in the picture 2/2s come down first turn anyway.  Would there be a place for this outside of Stompy?  Because as much as I would LOVE seeing Stompy come back, I'm not sure this would push it over the edge.

This is rapidly becoming my favorite thread ever.
15  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Worldfire on: July 24, 2012, 02:29:06 pm
Greater Gargadon.  It's a good card in its own right.

You can also try other suspend cards, or creatures with champion or phasing.

In my (I'll admit limited) testing with this card, I have found the AK engine to be better than the gush engine as you want to consistenly have mana available to cast Talrand/Other spells.

This makes good sense...provided you can explain how having a draw engine with an average casting of 2-3 compared with 0 increases the mana available. Thanks.

Probably he means he doesn't want to take his Islands off the board.
17  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: GWB Beats, the best beatdown right now on: May 23, 2012, 11:00:31 pm
Just curious, has anyone tried putting Lodestone Golems in the deck?  For one more mana than Glowrider it packs a lot more punch, and it can be cast with colorless from your Caverns.

Or maybe put it in the sideboard, for after the opponent has taken out his artifact kill.
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: The Wheel 5.2 on: April 08, 2012, 09:55:45 pm
Mostly I just want to say that I love your deck, and I hope you keep us posted on it.

I agree with Lose Hope over Darkblast, dredging in this deck is so... fair.

Have you ever tried adding Cunning Wish?  Having maindeck access to Teferi's Response, Mana Drain, Hurkyl's, etc. seems like it has potential.  If you have tried it, I'm curious to know how well it worked.
19  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Hermit Druid with Green Sun's Zenith- viable? on: January 25, 2011, 03:42:18 pm
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there's a rules issue here: A Lord of Extinction that is in the graveyard has power/toughness 0/0.  So removing it to Sutured Ghoul is not a good idea.  The reminder text on Sutured Ghoul itself supports this.
20  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Bruizar's All Seeing Eye looks at Scars of Mirrodin on: September 23, 2010, 10:00:36 am
I personally look forward to the days when decks will run white for STP, Balance, and Leeches in the board.

I love the deck, and I look forward to it becoming even better with the next sets in the block.

Edit: No first turn relevant creatures?  All those guys have colorless mana in their cost, so of course we'll be running full Moxen...
21  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Empty the Kobolds on: June 03, 2008, 08:19:49 pm
Here's mine:

4 Carnival of Souls
4 Skullclamp
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
2 Steelshaper's Gift
1 Enlightened Tutor

4 Dark Ritual
4 Culling the Weak

4 Crookshank Kobolds
4 Crimson Kobolds
4 Kobolds of Kher Keep
3 Myr Moonvessel
4 Ornithopter
2 Restless Dreams

2 Tendrils of Agony
4 Cabal Therapy

1 Chrome Mox
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Scrubland
3 Swamp

This deck is built for speed, intending to win no later than turn 2.  There are only 9 cards which cost more than one mana; I tested Necropotence and Yawgmoth's Will and found they were too unwieldy.  Diabolic Intent was also too slow.  Not including them means it's not necessary to play extraneous mana sources like Mana Vault and Lion's Eye Diamond.

It is not strictly necessary to have a Carnival while going off, but it helps a lot.  It is, however, necessary to have a Skullclamp, which is why there are 5 tutors that can get it.  Restless Dreams is better than Yawg in this deck, since it's cheaper and you'll usually have extra lands in hand anyway by the time you want to cast it.

Aside from speed, the main strength of this deck is its ability to run Cabal Therapy for disruption.  It is also synergistic, as it is great to sacrifice an Ornithopter equipped with Skullclamp to pay for flashback.

It would be nice if I could find room for one more land, but this deck is surprisingly consistent and Therapy helps a lot to remove obstacles.  Give it a try.

EDIT: Plus, it's not like you're using your Scrublands for anything else Smile
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Is Stasis viable again? on: June 05, 2007, 10:52:38 am
Wow, stasis is so completely useless against Ichorid.

I love the deck, but it's going to need to change quite a bit to fit with the metagame.  Figure out which decks need to untap permanents to win (maybe Flash, but not Ichorid), and then come up with a backup plan for those that don't.
23  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Uses for Infinite Mana... on: June 04, 2007, 01:29:49 pm
Izzet Guildmage + any draw or burn.  You're running draw already, right?
24  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Vintage: How to start? on: May 15, 2007, 02:29:50 pm
Have you considered Oath?  Even an unpowered build would allow you to use lots of the good disruption Fish runs, while you get a nifty combo finish and a very good game against randomness.  It is also a deck that will benefit from slowly adding power as you get it, and then once your set is complete you can move on to Gifts etc.
25  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Dragonīs Chance - Is it have a chance? on: February 28, 2007, 11:37:36 am
First of all, I think that Replenishing in a Pandemonium and a Saproling Burst is better than Form of the Dragon/ Second Chance, since it kills instantly with fewer cards.  The deck that I like to build around it is Oath.  For example:

4 Oath of Druids
4 Forbidden Orchard
2 Pandemonium
2 Saproling Burst
2 Replenish
1 Krosan Reclamation
1 Eternal Witness

4 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
1 Ancestral
1 Time Walk
2 Misdirection
1 Chain of Vapor

2 Lim Dul's Vault
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Imperial Seal
3 Duress
1 Cabal Therapy

5 Mox
1 Mana Crypt
15 Lands

There's probably too many lands here, but you get the point.  Basically, get out an Oath, Oath your deck into your graveyard, bring a Replenish from your grave to your hand with Eternal Witness or Reclamation, and cast Replenish to kill your opponent.  With an opening hand of 1 Orchard, 2 Moxen, 1 land, and 3 other cards, you can win on turn 2, often with Force of Will backup.

Give it a try!
26  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: W/B hate deck, has he got any possibility? on: February 27, 2007, 07:30:09 am
The thing I notice first is that all your creatures cost 2 mana.  My suggestion is to use Aether Vial.  In addition to being acceleration, the ability to play Withered Wretches, Ture Believers and Kami of Ancient Law as instants can really screw with the opponent.
27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Unpowered Mono-Blue on: December 09, 2006, 06:15:41 pm
You seem to be missing some bounce, especially since you already have 4 Scrolls to fetch it.  That said, I was never much of a fan of Merchant Scroll in unpowered decks; it feels too slow.

Obviously Back to Basics is a major reason to run this deck.  Instead of running Chalice to complement it, have you considered Powder Keg?  For 2 mana it kills all Moxen on the board; it's useful in multiples; and if he's playing in an unpowered metagame it will really help out against random aggro decks.  Since he's already running Shackles and Control Magic, it seems like creatures are definitely an issue in his metagame.

Lastly, I would consider a Trinket Mage toolbox, though obviously that suffers from lack of power as well.
28  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Oath of Druids Combo on: December 06, 2006, 06:56:12 pm
4 Oath of Druids
1 Eternal Witness
1 Krosan Reclamation
2 Pandemonium
2 Saproling Burst
2 Replenish

4 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
2 Misdirection

4 Brainstorm
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
4 Intuition
1 Ray of Revelation
1 Ancient Grudge
2 Deep Analysis
3 Orim's Chant/Stifle

4 Forbidden Orchard
5 Moxen
1 Black Lotus
4 Flooded Strand
3 Tundra
3 Tropical Island
1 Island

This list is pretty much off the top of my head.  You should totally try it.  The kill is not nearly as complicated and hard to pull off as yours, and with an opening hand including 2 land, 2 mox, 1 Oath, it goldfishes on turn 2.  I've tried to add a little redundancy by using doubles of all the combo pieces plus the artifact/enchant destruction, but you can take it out if you want a more consistent early kill.  Plus, Mana Drain lets you hardcast the combo if you like.
29  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Casual Turn 1 Kill on: December 01, 2006, 02:59:37 pm
You guys have it all wrong. The coolest deck to always win on turn 1 is Academy.

4 Tolarian Academy
4 City of Brass
4 Gemstone Mine
4 Crop Rotation

4 Lotus Petal
4 Mox Diamond
4 Sol Ring
4 Mana Vault
4 Voltaic Key

4 Orim's Chant
4 Windfall
4 Time Spiral
4 Memory Jar
2 Mind Over Matter
2 Stroke of Genius
4 Wheel of Fortune

And that's ignoring such not-quite-budget cards as Candelabra of Tawnos and Mana Crypt.
30  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Can Shahrazad be competitive? on: November 27, 2006, 09:22:15 pm
As stated, any opponent in their right mind will just concede the subgame.  The only way to make Shahrazad any good is to make it a lose-lose situation.  In other words, make it clear that the opponent would be better off conceding, and then punish them for it.  I threw together a deck for Legacy a while ago; if I were to test it in Vintage, I would likely start with something like this:

4 Shahrazad
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Tormod's Crypt/Leyline of the Void
3 Dust to Dust
4 Orim's Chant/Abeyance

4 Savannah Lions
3 Isamaru, Hound of Konda
4 Icatian Javelineers
3 Jotun Grunt
3 Kataki, War's Wage

4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Pearl
1 Lotus Petal
16 Plains

STP, Dust to Dust, and Tormod's Crypt remove things from the game and make the opponent want to conced subgames.  So they take some damage, which speeds up your white weenie plan like a Time Walk.  Each card is fine without Shahrazad also.  Obviously, Samurai of the Pale Curtain and Ture Believer are contenders also, and if we add enough 1W-mana creatures we could justify the use of additional Moxen.

Conceivably, we could splash a color pretty easily.  Splashing Blue might allow the power blue, Extract, and Rootwater Theif, although those last two are pretty much generally considered crap.  Splashing red looks better, as it gives Hide/Seek, burn, and more quick creature options.  (And if you want, Burning Wish -for Shahrazad!)

Hopefully it won't undermine my credibility to say that one of the attractions of playing the deck in Legacy is the addition of, you guessed it, Tivadar's Crusade to the sideboard.  Goblins?  What goblins?
