First off good to see many of you again, and thanks all for participating!

Why not wait for the metagame to "develop"?

I think that the metagame while not fully developed has had time enough to react to Hulk Flash; however, there just seems an answer to every answer that can be presented to Hulk Flash.  Currently this is the mark of a good deck.  If this trend continues; however, this will be the mark of a metagame warping deck, and at that time I think the DCI will take action against the deck.  If Flash is truly worthy of restricting then it will not be seen until the time Lorwyn enters into Standard.  I doubt 10th Edition will cause Wizards to affect changes to the banned and restricted lists.  There definitely were some broken draws and games with Hulk Flash decks this past Saturday.  If this continues I do believe that Wizards will institute a change, much like the Workshop/Tinishpere change, but it may take some more time.

I do not agree 100% with the un-restriction of Gush. I think R&D was a bit premature in making that move; however, only time will tell.  I do agree with Implacable's and Mr. Menendian's posts that Gush will be showcased much more in other decks like storm decks and possibly flash decks.  While GAT is still a powerful option there is enough hate for decks that showcase Mr. Teeth out there now.  While I am not 100% on Gush in Flash decks it does seem a very powerful option.

Mind Twist is a very interesting card to have unrestricted as well.  I am not quite sure I can fathom the effect on the meta-game this un-restriction will have.  Though I have to admit, a Twist behind a Chalice seems really good to me.  Not too sure if this would work well with Black Vise as others have suggested, perhaps I am just missing the card synergy.

I do not think you are bashing plus I like the critiques, he, he.

You are walking into an established play group, so to speak. One that has its own procedures. Its own flow. Its own rigidity.

I totally agree with you on that.

They posted the pairings and like we always do, players immediately sat down. Colby and I started played and were on turn 2 when the judge came over and admonished us for starting, saying he had announcements to make and hadn't said go yet.

I think that is because you are not used to having a judge present at the tournament.  Standard procedure is to make a few announcements then let the games begin!  Forgive me if I came off too strong; however, given the situation again I would still do the same thing.  I feel like everyone thinks I was very strict, maybe that is the rigidness of PTQ's, he, he.  Though to a head judge procedure is something that should be important, at least I feel that way anyway.  Again, thanks all for coming out and I am glad you all seemed to have enjoyed the event!

1)  Overly strict.  Seconded.
2)  Not familiar with vintage cards.
3)  Not familiar with rulings concerning vintage cards.  (Dredging, Mana Drain, etc).
4)  Contradictory statements.  (At one point, I heard the judge say that he could not give out warnings because it was just a local tournament.)  Well, if that's the case, why should we pay attention to anything you say?

While I will not apologize for being 'overly strict', which I do not believe I was; perhaps it was a presentation issue.  My style of judging is quite different from others you may know and that is fine; it just takes some time to get used to.  I know the vintage cards and interactions quite well, actually.  Believe it or not I often play vintage and legacy formats when I have the chance.  As you may note, while I do not frequently post comments, I do read the forums quite a bit.  This is neither the first nor the last time I will judge a vintage tournament.  Granted I do and have made mistakes, but that is a part of being human.  As for contradictory statements, I do believe you are misinterpreting the meaning of what I said.  You should listen to what any judge has to say, because that is important for them to perform their appointed task.  They are there as neutral arbiters of the event, to maintain its integrity and uphold the funness factor, etc.  I do really take the job seriously, while it is something that I do for fun.  Oh, and as a side note, I really did just misinterpret the question about the dredge cards and the yard.  From the original information I got, the cards were already in the yard, if you really want to asses blame it would go to you (plural) as the players for not clearly explicating the situation.  It was just an honest mistake though; they do happen even to judges, he, he.  Hope this does not seem like a rant,  he, he.  I did have lots of fun and hope to see you all at the next event, thanks for coming out!

Hello, and welcome to TMD.  We're glad you make yourself available to judge Vintage events, and we appreciate you handling yourself with maturity in this thread when a number of other regular posters have trouble doing the same.  That said, it was difficult to read and understand your laudably calm and level-headed response on the first try.  I've highlighted some of the problems in red bold, and had to delete some confusing unnecessary punctuation in other places.  Please try to ensure your posts are easy to read and understand going forward, in accordance with the site rules.  -DA

Even if it is for fun, I have to take my job seriously, he, he.  Perhaps it was just a presentation issue, but I will note your comment.
