1  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Blightsteel Colossus on: January 26, 2011, 07:47:45 pm
^Interesting take.  I wonder if wizards is going to print cards that say "target player loses X poison counters" or "target players gains x poison counters."  Because if/when that happens, the poison mechanic will become more like traditional damage.

At first glace, it seems that BSC is better than anything currently that can be oathed up of Tinkered out because it does it one turn faster.  But it's not that simple, is it?
3  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Premium Article] Visiting Wizards, Reprints and the Reserved List on: March 11, 2010, 05:51:00 pm
While others have said that owning Magic cards is not an investment, I think paying for anything is an investment.  That much is just by definition.  However, if you're like me and bought Strategic Planning while the value was at it's highest and sold it when it lost popularity, I started to see it as money lost = cost of hobby.  Of course, when I sell off my foil Entomb, that will have been an investment.

It's a hobby and an investment.  The way I see it, if I don't make money when I sell off my cards, the difference will be the cost to play and enjoy myself.  For example, if I spent $3000 on my cards and sell them for $2500, there's a $500 loss (which of course sucks), but to play the game for 10 years with those awesome cards, it cost me $500.  Is that naive?

That said, if I cared about the format, then I should be okay with a price drop in my cards if it came with more participants in the format.  I guess I have a question to ask myself.  If I suspect Wizards may be  reprinting a lot of their best cards, do I sell off and get out, or do I stick with the format?
4  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Zendikar boosters include Ancestral Recall? on: September 27, 2009, 06:15:31 pm
Could it be just a marketing ploy by WotC?  You have players who play strictly eternal formats and know better than to buy packs.  There are some of them who have the money to buy playsets of FoWs, original duals, etc. and even people who buy playsets of bazaars, drains and workshops.  Wizards know they have money, but many of them, like me bought one pack of sealed product in the past 15 years (the "rat's nest" theme dek that had Jitte in it).  I bought a box (my first ever) of Zendikar just so I could finally know the thrill of opening 36 bosters in a row and to (hopefully!) feel like Charlie Bucket and get my golden ticket.  Would $100 in singles be the better investment?  Probably.  Maybe I'm the guy they're targeting.  There's $100 of my money they wouldn't normally have gotten.  And hey, I might even buy a second box.  I at least hope to sell off the high-dollar rares, to help off set the cost.
5  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Noble Fish: GUW variants here! on: March 09, 2009, 09:40:04 pm
Has anyone one else tried Rafiq of the Many?  With Selkie and Hierarch, it's like a one-sided draw seven.  I use him in a more aggressive build.  It's casting cost might be too restrictive at 4, but he's been an absolute game-breaker, especially with rancor.
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Transmuting Slaver on: February 07, 2009, 05:18:25 pm
I don't know.  There's a reason why Sundering Titan and Darksteel Colossus are staples in Slaver.  The advantages Inkwell has over DSC is that it is blue and can be welded.  I'd run both titan and Inkwell (or at least test them together).

One side note about the Sphinx - I'd only run it in the sideboard because all in all, life total means nothing in Vintage.  That being said, I haven't tested this card or any card like that.  But pound for pound, I'd rather run Platinum Angel (which is, however, not blue like Sphinx).

What if you played with less sculpting steel, no cursecatcher, no enlightened tutor, and less/no street wraith, and you could play with thoughtcast. you have enough artifacts. frogmite would be a decent addition if you had sword of fire/ice or cranial plating. tinker is also always a good addition. it may not seem that great when you have a ton of stuff and thorn down, but if your behind it is really good.

You could also go the other way and add skullclamp and genesis chamber. frogmite goes well with this too. you could easily make master of etherum huge, and have a small army of 2/2's, and probably play way more spells than your oponent, especially under ethersworn.
I really like MoE and the sculpter very much in shop aggro.  The problem I see in my theoretical deckbuilding is I try to do too much.  I try adding them in traditional shop aggro builds, but then I really want to take advantage of the fact that they are blue artifact creatures and add things like FoW and other broken blue things like tfk, brainstorm, tinker and recall.  By then I have well over 60 cards.  I'm not sure yet where he fits.

Tolarian Academy should be in here too.

Correct me if I am wrong, but could you use djinn illuminatus in conjunction with manamorphose to draw out your deck until you hit the pact and the altar?
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] ReplicOath on: August 27, 2008, 08:34:52 pm
I really like the fresh idea and really want to break the djinn, but having to wait for two more combo pieces after you oathed up your fat seems sub-optimal to oathing up an angel or tyrant and ending the game right there.  Is this the Danger of Playing Cool Things?

Anyway, I really like the synergy anger would have in this deck.  Except of course, it would have to change your manabase around.

Around b/r time, it always makes me wonder why wizards just gets rid of the vintage category.  It doesn't make them moeny and people always cry about black loti and moxen running around (who don't have them, obviously).  Wizards even says they made power level mistakes when the game first was created.  What purpose does messing with the b/r list serve for wizards?  Just get rid of it all together if you're afraid of all that power (no pun intended) and pretend the format doesn't exist and let TOs make their own house rules.  That way when making new cards, you don't have to worry about how it would interact with older cards.
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Single Card Strategy] Mystic Remora on: March 09, 2008, 08:35:49 pm
Another card that I used to use in mono U control was Rhystic Study.  It costs more, and they have to pay less, but it has no upkeep and it effects every spell.  In type 1 mana is at a premium, so you can't always afford to pay that 1 extra.

j

I see how Rhystic Study could be just as effective as Mystic Remora, but the point you make has to go both ways. If your opponent can't always afford the 1 mana to keep you from drawing, then you have to remember that you won't always be able to afford the 2 more mana that Rhystic is going to need to play in the first place.
Being able to cast Remora consistently turn 1 (without mana accel) is huge.  Bigger than the drawback of not drawing when your opponent casts a creature.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays - As Clear as MUD on: January 28, 2008, 05:36:15 pm
I noticed nothing in the sideboard to deal with opposing artifacts like, say null rod, which isn't really prevalent now, but may be soon.
13  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Eternal Potpouri - Doomsday on: June 12, 2007, 08:09:38 am
What is the typical pile of 5 for doomsday?

Are their other options for a kill with this deck?

I personally would say:

1) Top of deck
Ancestral Recall
Black Lotus
Dark Ritual/ LED
Mind's Desire
Research
Bottom of deck

Play Anc,Blotus,Rit, then after the first copy of Desire respond with Research and search for Will, Tendrils, FoW + stuff like Ritual/LED 2nd Research// Development etc. Then the other copys of Desire play Will, Tendrils and stuff for free.

Seems as quick as it is dirty. ^^

2) You can go for "normal" Stormcombo stuff like: Rit ->Blotus ->Demonic Tutor ->Will... or other Storm enabler stuff like Gush or Chain ov Vapor.

I'm also Interested in Sideboard stuff. With the 2 Researches (1 in SB) you can go for a lot of tricks and solutions. But theese are only known by Smmenen at the moment I think. ^^

I'm a little confused as to how you combo out.  If you fetch out will with it, doesn't it mean that it won't be maindeck?  In this particular stack, isn't what you play for free with mind's desire completely dependent on what you fetch with R+D?  Perhaps I'm missing something and don't understand the "typical" way the deck plays out.  You'll have to forgive me, I'm new to combo.

EDIT:  I'm so incredibly sorry to have posted such a ridiculous question.  I failed to realize that R+D essentially fetches anything in your deck because your deck minus the doomsday stack is removed from the game.
