1  Eternal Formats / Creative / [deck] budget parfait on: March 13, 2005, 06:31:39 pm
I agree that most of the time you aren't using your acceleration to power out belchers.  I usually don't like to see belchers for a while, until I'm about to win.  I'm not sure which build of parfait is the best, but I think that it's very flexible.  White is very flexible with any color and you can do lots of funky things that I think would be kind of fun to play.

My friend had suggested Academy Rector in order to fetch out your enchantments and maybe even spot the Illusions-Donate combo with it, as some other decks have been using.  That would probably be best as a W/B build of parfait (known as Blackberry) to spot hand disruption such as Cabal Therapy and Duress.  Black can provide some nifty tricks and some pretty cool board options that might be effective against some of the unfavorable matchups like Combo.

Eternal Dragon would two-fold: as recursive land search and as an uncounterable threat.  It could be used effectively, but in the correct deck.  I think that non-red decks should probably be spotting mobilization over charbelcher because they will probably be slower and more mana intensive.

While I agree that mono-blue and things like Tog could be difficult matchups, and they probably are, I will concede that I haven't tested those matchups.  However, you do have many ways to punch through the counters.  With the recursion effects it makes the deck a bit more playable.

Parfait doesn't beat Oath just b/c it has humility.  It beats oath b/c it has so much hate against that deck and they need to counter loads of stuff.  Parfait isn't even scared of Oath, especially preboard.  Look, we've got tons of bombs against them like: Blood Moon, Seal of Cleansing, Humility, and StP; all of which are great if they come out when playing Oath.  I agree that post-board it gets a lot harder, since we basically board nothing in and Oath puts in their pro creatures.

The parfait strategy is fundamentally flawed because it is inherently slow, avoiding artifact acceleration and relying on NOT playing lands for a few turns to activate Tax.

My point about Land Tax was only a desperate situation.  Zuran Orb is used to make it so that you are always taxing, which is key.  Parfait is a deck that doesn't rely on land very much.  Lack of artifact acceleration?  Parfait plays (or at least it should) with a good deal of it.  I don't think it merits all the moxen, but at least some the on-color ones, crypt, lotus, and petal.

Also, I don't think that every control deck needs blue.  I think that this deck functions better without it b/c red does more and has more synergy than blue in Parfait.

Edit: I think there is a lot of confusion b/w versions and stuff, so I think I should post the version that I have been playing.  It is netdecked from someone who T8'd:

I don't think that Parfait can be completely white.  Adding red gives some goods to the Charbelcher if you have to do it fast or you can't tax all the lands out.  Also, gives you some board options to improve matches post-board that are needed.  And of course the reason to include red, Blood Moon.

I disagree with the idea that "OMG Parfait suckzorz!!!!"  I realize that my inexperience of vintage debunks this claim, but I feel that while it can't just bust out really broken stuff like Stax and the like, it has it's time.  I haven't tested many matches, mainly Oath.  But it does against Oath.  I think that it has the ability to hold it's own, primarily for the rogue reason when you take it to a tournament.

I think that the decklists that have been posted have way too much creature hate in them.  Probably cuz they're mono-white and there's a limited reach with them.  Keep in mind that you can't afford play slow cards like DoJ, and WoG just doesn't merit a spot.  This deck survives on low amounts of land and needs to be taxing as much as possible.  I have even, under some circumstances, opted not to play a land so that I would be able to tax the next turn.  Also, you don't want to play your lands b/c they will be mostly scrolled for the ancestral per turn.  I also think that humility is a must and is much better than WoG or any other creature hate.  Also, Slice and Dice is another option that I saw some ppl using and works very well.  The 2R uncounterable WoG that draws you a card and has spell flexibility is pretty good.

@Frappie:

I don't think that Goblin Sharpshooter would be a good choice because:

1. It costs 1 more than Razorfin Hunter (Important in a tempo deck)
2. Razorfin Hunter is more versatile (It will probably get more damage through)
3 Works better with Curiosity
4. I think that Goblin Sharpshooter is only good against decks with tiny little creatures or against DoJ (which it won't resolve in that match) and versus tiny creatures Fire, and other pingers do the job fine.

Also, we use so many pingers so that we can ATTEMPT to control aggro.  Very difficult to do.

@LizardKING:

Well people shouldn't be using Tormod's Crypt in the board.  Gay/r is an aggro-control deck that is designed to beat control.  I don't think that Gay/r will lose to tog b/c it beats it in card advantage and that's the basis of how it will win.  However, I do agree with you on the fact that we lose to aggro.  Since most of the time we face TNT in an aggro match we have artifact hate which will improve the matchup.  In combo decks like that we should be able to prevent the combo most of the time.  However, Maze of Ith could be a consideration

Yes, a lavamancer turn 1 is better and probably one of the best turn 1 plays (w/o moxen) that this deck has.  I learned that very quickly.  I'm not necessarily flaming and saying "Cloud of Faeries is terrible in this deck blah blah blah etc."  I'm saying that it is an acceptable card choice.  But receiving insights from my friends and other TMD people as well as testing has shown that Flying Men is better for the main reason that I have articulated in a previous post.  Also Moxlotus, your assumption that I'm playing against someone playing tog or similar things that are powered isn't always correct.  Using Flying Men we are able to attack one turn earlier and thus, draw one more card earlier.  Personally, I rather have one more card in hand on turn 2 and one damage in rather than the ability to play 2 cards from my hand.  Maybe Cloud of Faeries allows for a more controllish type of Fish.  But this type of aggro Gay/r is far superior imo.  Same as when we budget the Fish deck we are forced to play a more controlled version.  Nothing necessarily wrong with it and we don't lose much, but we lose enough.  A powered deck is superior to a non-powered deck which should make sense.  Also, why would you ever play faerie conclave when you could play a lavamancer first turn.  But come to think of it, Flying Men first turn might be a little scarier, but it's a tough call.  In Gay/r we try to beat the person by gaining more card advantage than they do with our engine of curiosity so why not get it up and running a turn earlier?  Since this is basically how we win, it's like saying why not win a turn earlier?

Perhaps I wasn't clear and I apologize for my misunderstanding, but I don't think you answered all of my questions Ephraim.  I understand now that the board isn't tight and that's the reason for inlcuding Tel-Jilad Justice.  But what enchantments is this deck afraid of?  Is there really a need for enchantment hate at all?

I also question the use of some board options like Ancestral Knowledge because from testing situations in which I would wish or board them in seems very minimal.  Perhaps I'm wrong and you could be so kind as to point me in the right direction.

Also, what do you guys think about Diminishing Returns as a reset button in this deck.  My decks are often unforgiving and it has allowed me to go off when I would usually just fizzle out and lose the game.  It could make it more consistent despite the UU.  Just a thought.
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Cloud of Faeries on: July 19, 2004, 10:51:13 pm
Well, my point is that in Fish or Gay/r Cloud of Faeries is acceptable but Flying Men is far superior.  Although, Cloud of Faeries may be the ultimate tempo card.  Flying Men is the same body and allows you to get the curiosity engine going a turn earlier.  From testing, I'm sure you'll find that Flying Men is much better than Cloud of Faeries.

Ok, I see some things that are a little wacky right away that should be dealt with.  We'll start with the MD:

Lotus?  Gay/r doesn't really need it.  I've been testing without out it and been doing great.  We're not likely to explode on turn 1 with lotus and others like other decks might do.  Also, swamp one of those blue fetches for an island.  I like Flying Men a lot better than Cloud of Faeries, mainly because it's a turn faster.  Cloud of Faeries is acceptable in this deck, but Flying Men just work a lot better b/c you can attack a turn earlier.  Spiketail Hatchling isn't needed if you've got voidmage prodigy, which I would suggest that you go up to 2 on and also go up to 3 on Razorfin Hunter.  Don't underestimate curiosity on Razorfin Hunter: It's a house!  Finally, I'd cut a Mis-D (goes to board) for an additional Mox Monkey.  Now it's lookin' good  Wink !

Now let's look at the sideboard.  As others have said before me, Tormod's Crypt isn't really needed and is unsynergistic with Null Rod, which you won't want to take out against Combo.  Sword of F/I is way to clunky and comes out too late.  Gay/r is about tempo and Sword doesn't allow you to generate enough tempo to offset how much you have lost.  Also, not a huge fan of Sigil of Sleep here, but that doesn't mean that you can't use it.  I prefer BEB's instead.  I'd add another R&R, another F/I, and 2 Mis-D.  That's what I have to give.  Good Luck.

I have a few quick question:

In the board, why is Tel-Jilad Justice used instead of Naturalize?  It seems like Naturalize would be better and perhaps it would be able to open up some more board spots.  Maybe you guys can help me on this.

Also, what enchantments is the deck really afraid of?  I know it's almost auto-loss with worship in play, especially worship-argothian enchantress, but I'm not really seeing anything else, enlighten me please!  Smile
10  Eternal Formats / Creative / Help with GAT on: April 21, 2004, 11:13:12 pm
I play GAT as well, however my version is much more budgeted than yours since I have no power (which is kinda necessary).

Quote

2 Stifle
2 Oxidize
2 Smother
2 Damping Matrix
2 Pernicious Deed
1 Naturalize
1 BEB
1 Berserk
1 FoF
1 Hurkyl's Recall

As for the SB, I have some issues.  Personally, I feel that Stifle should be run MD instead of Duress as it has proved much more effective cuz it's just broken.  Yes, I would swamp your smother's for edicts most definitely.  I don't really like Matrix in here since it screws with Tog so if u want that maybe put in some Ground Seals instead.  Also, since you seem fully powered I would suggest running V. Tutor in the side.  I'm also testing out a red splash right now and it's working pretty well for me so u might want to try that out because it opens some pretty good SB options such as R&R, Artifact Mutation, REB,... as well as Fire/Ice in the main.

That's all for now...
