Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: TheManaDrain.com - New Direction?

One of the big things I would like to see is a way to turn my old vintage encyclopedia project into a community project. I know it has been used in the past to get new players to look at the format and has gotten older, semi-retired players to think about coming back. I know there are still many people willing to do a lot of work on it.
I feel like community projects like the encyclopedia are in line with the direction this site is heading. If there is a way to make a post so that it is able to be edited by anyone, I think that would work. I currently have all the posts in that thread saved as individual notepad files if that is of any use, I would be happy to email them or put them up on a file share site.
Another idea I would like to see is a map (US and world) with LGS that run vintage events and their information. No clue how we would do it, but it would be a great tool for anyone looking to start out. And to add to that the ability to tag yourself as a regular attendee of a shop so people can easily message each other to form playtest groups.
If we want vintage to survive we must continually strive to build our community.

From what I have seen so far it looks like the biggest difference between NC and TX is the stores we play at. Here in NC Atomic Empire is an awesome store, they don't take as much as yours do from the entry fees and the venue is fantastic in terms of space, accessibility (right off major highways) and good location in terms of food, with a bar in store.
If I were you I would see about having a tournament somewhere like a public park instead of the store. I'm not sure if you would need to get a permit or something, but if you are doing a 12 man tournament then a few hours in the park sounds pretty nice. It would mean people can bring their own drinks/coolers (and you might be able to make an extra buck or two off selling some drinks) and you could even grill out. Plus some parks have nice spots for the wife and kids to play.
The vintage community (at least those that stay in the community) are fairly laid back people, often the smaller tournaments are just as much about hanging out as they are about playing the game. I know I would be up for a weekend tournament outside as long as the weather is decent. And who knows, if the stores find out that you have built a community for this without them, they might make some concessions to bring back your business.

Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Premium Article] The History of Vintage: 2003

Unfortunately I remember this period much more through type 1.5 and 2, since I had recently moved and not found any vintage scene near me. The biggest part that I do remember were the various survival decks live venguer mask and TnT being incredibly fun to play.
From the type 1.5 perspective Dr Teeth was insane. You could play a hard control roll laying out artifact mana like thran dynamo to power various counterspells and draw cards until you land upheaval, replay your board and Dr Teeth and counter your opponent's next turn 1 drop then swing for lethal.
Also, for about a 2 year stretch I don't think I saw a single Psychatog not altered. They all had top hats, canes, monicles, cigars, glasses of wine or something ridiculous like turning his head into a balloon carried by a small child sharpie'd on them. If it wasn't for the fact that it was an uncommon I would marvel at seeing an un-altered one today.
8th edition marked the last time I played standard (with the exception of affinity for a short while because it was only $200 to build at its peak), as it was the last time force spike was legal in that format, but the years from urza/masques through oddesy/onslought were pretty fun (except when legions was printed, I almost quit the game entirely). While there were a lot of deck ideas that coalesced solely in vintage for vintage, I remember many people attempting (and some succeeding) to port various standard and extended tech, if not whole strategies.
I was incredibly happy that you did the first 10 years of vintage, because much of that history has been trapped in dusty old magazines and ancient usenet boards which I can only imagine look like some ancient dungeon out of the original Castlevania. To have all that information in one place is definitely worthwhile.
This series of the next 10 years is great for an entirely different reason; there are an order of magnitude more people that remember these times and get to look back and clear up the lens of their memory as they reminisce on the tech and metagames they poured hours into testing and studying with friends, the tournaments they were a part of and the lengthy discussions they had that contributed to shaping our format. It also helps to chronicle the non-player forces on our format like the DCI, Wizards R&D and the tournament organizers, which are all just as important as the growth made inside the metagame and many of us won't know or won't remember with any clarity what these forces were doing at the time.

Patrick Chapin seems like a really good choice, he has shown skill in and love for the format for years and has a great personality.
Ari Lax may have a somewhat abrasive personality on social media, but in person he came off as another strong player falling in love with the best format.
And if we are going to see someone come out of retirement to play I want to see Tommy Kowolith. I think Soly said he shares a mtgo account with him from time to time.
But ultimately there are a lot of choices that would be excellent to watch, which is a pretty awesome thing!

This might not be what you're looking for, but back in 2006 my good friend and Meandecker extraordinaire Jerry "Yangtime" Yang piloted a Mark "Snoop Trogg" Trogdon creation called Mirror Mirror. If featured Time Walk, Savor the Moment, Panoptic Mirror, and Serra Sphinx as the win condition. Rumor's of the monstrosity can be found here http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=36295.0 It was really neat deck. No Joke. I was going to suggest this as well, since it was a pretty good deck, but I am unsure how good panoptic mirror is in the increased artifact hate meta we have now.

Sex.dec used to cast time walk over and over using regrowth effects, it might be even stronger now considering noxious revival is far better that what was available back then.
A Uwg list with good blue spells, regrowth effects and monastery mentors alongside utility creatures like scm and pridemage seems like it might work in the current meta.

I really don't think you do. As long as you are only playing 1-2 of her she isn't likely to be seen before you have either lost some creatures to combat/discard/counters/kill spells or have used creatures with their own sac outlet like pridemage or hexmage.
Remember she is a moat against a large portion of played creatures even if she does enter play before her ability is relevant.
The only engine for abuse that I can see is lilliana of the veil, anything else I can think of is too cute to be competitive.

If it had haste instead of first strike I don't think it would ever be played in eternal formats. As is it comes out on top against golem and delver, as well as creating redundancy for already played value creatures. 3 mana for 5 damage and blowing up an artifact/enchantment every turn with pridemage is actually pretty good. The only real issue are the colors, but it seems like it is already in the normal Humans colors.
I can see this being played by Humans and UWr bomberman.

That dredge list looks horrible. At least the chancellors are definitely crap which made it even more embarrassing to loose 2:0. In T8 I mull to 6 and keep a SNIP hand of wasteland, land, mox, thorn, golem, mishra. I drop the thorn, draw a Workshop to play t2 Golem and waste his BoB. Looks pretty good, but he has the 2nd Bazaar.. 2nd game I keep wasteland, workshop, mana crypt, Golem, Golem, Golem, sphere. He has 2 BoBs again!
Besides the tournament was fun and I had a great time, thanks for organizing Steve.
I don't get it. In game 1 you both had lucky hands, him with 2 BoBs and you drawing the shop off the top to be able to put up a quicker than 10 turn clock. In game 2 you had 3 of a sick 4 of in your hand and he had 2 of a sick 4 of in his... These games seem far more fair than the average dredge or workshop match. Glad to see you guys getting good turn outs. Were the oath decks Fenton style with show and tells or something else?

Back when I was playing Burning Oath (pitch version) I won most of my matches against Bug fish through the oath plan. A single misdirection gets you the turn to oath, or a time walk. The few times oath didn't work their hand was light enough that I was able to storm them out with ease, I can easily see the same being said for tezz vaulting.
I know Bug is better positioned to fight oath compared to other fish decks, but it is still not an easy fight, and a surge in oath definitely makes Bug worse in the meta. Not to mention it is also a dog to a resolved show and tell, so unless every fish deck main decks a karakas I don't see the match up being in their favor any time soon.

I don't get the skepticism. It's not even as if you guys are taking a measured look at it and deciding it's just not quite right for the 6 drop slot. Your arguments appear to be:
1. Six drops in MUD must win the game on their own and this does not; and 2. This is inferior to Memory Jar.
This isn't any different from how a blue player evaluates prospective cards: 1. If it costs 4+ mana it must have a huge impact if not outright win the game. 2. It must not be inferior to any playable analogs. 3. It must fit in with a prospective deck's game plan. This card 1) costs more than 4+ mana, but likely has a large impact on the game at the cost of tying up turns doing little else besides drawing cards. 2) The investment required makes it difficult to to pinpoint if it is on par with cards like staff of nin or coersive portal, or even jar. There are already things that fill the draw options for shops, some of which don't get shut down by null rod. 3) As has been stated, this card becomes increasingly difficult to cast the later it gets drawn. Unfortunately the best time to utilize it is later in the game. In a typical shop deck it fights itself, something the analogs don't do.
