Eternal Formats / Creative / Legend Black, what to side in and what to side out

I use to play 3xNull Rod and 3xWithered Wretch main deck also, but I lot of time I find Null Rods being useless first game against a lot of aggro decks and have to side them out a lot. I think chalice has more uses than Null Rod main deck, a chalice for 0 can stop 0cc artifacts and powder keg can take care of the rest. It's also easier to throw down a chalice for 0 first turn than to cast null rod first turn, which can sometime make a huge difference. A chalice for 1 can stop so many cards that hurt you like lightning bolt and swords to plowshares, and can also stop blue card drawing spells like brainstorm and ancestral recall. A chalice for 2 can stop Mana Drains, AK's, etc. Same with Withered Wretch, if you're not facing a deck like Dragon or Tog, it's a pretty weak creature but I do have graveyard hate in the sideboard for these matchups.
What I want to know is what should my sideboarding strategy be for the different matchups with my current build. Basically I have a tendency to over-sideboard, like against tog I'll try to put in Edicts, Contagion, Planar Void, and Tormod's Crypts, but then I'll take out too many creatures or some other stuff to try to put these cards in, which messes up the synergy of my deck.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Legend Black, what to side in and what to side out

Hi,
I'm currently running this version of Legend Black:
CREATURES 4xNantuko Shade 4xPhyrexian Negator 4xHypnotic Specter 2xMasticore
DISRUPTION 4xDuress 4xHymn to Tourach 4xSinkhole
OTHER SPELLS 1xDemonic Tutor 1xDemonic Consultation 1xYawgmoth's Will 2xPowder Keg 2xChalice of the Void 4xDark Ritual
MANA 1xSol Ring 1xStrip Mine 4xWasteland 17xSwamp
SIDEBOARD 2xTormod's Crypt 1xNull Rod 1xPowder Keg 2xContagion 2xPerish 2xDiabolic Edict 2xDystopia 2xPlanar Void 1xChalice of the Void
My question is that I've always have a tendency to over-sideboarding so I was wondering if people can give me suggestions on what is the best sideboarding strategy against the current type 1 decks: Oshawa Stompy, Dragon, Tog, mirror, etc. Basically, I would like to know what I should side in and what I should side out against each of these matchups.
Thanks.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / seal of cleansing question

I know about the icy/assassin thing, I'm not a newbie but sometimes I just need some rules clarified because it has changed a lot since I first started playing Magic, like 10 years ago. But someone told me Seal of Cleansing can do what I said in the beginning topic on apprentice and he said a judge told him that. So I am wondering if you can do that, why can't you do the same thing with Disenchant. That's assuming he was right abou the Seal of Cleansing thing.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / seal of cleansing question
|

Hi,
Me again. I was once told that if I had Seal of Cleansing in play and someone plays Powder Keg, I can use the Seal of Cleansing to destroy the Powder Keg before he/she can even tap for 0 (to destroy moxes, etc.). However, if this is true isn't it possible to do the same thing with Disenchant? Is it possible to play Disenchant in response to someone playing Powder Keg and destroy it before he/she can tap for 0?
Thanks.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Frantic Search and Arrogant Wurm
|
on: February 08, 2004, 01:31:08 am

Hi,
I was just wondering, if I only have three lands and I tap them all to play Frantic Search and I also have an Arrogant Wurm in my hand. If I discard Arrogant Wurm for the Frantic Search does the Frantic Search fully resolve before I have to pay madness? Basically I want if I can play the Arrogant Wurm.
Thanks.

Eternal Formats / Creative / planar void or tormod's crypt? Help with sideboard
|

Sorry, it was just a general question.
I'm not playing sui or void. I'm trying to build a black land destruction deck using Sinkhole/Rancid Earth/Braids. It's a deck I use to play but I tore it apart and now i'm trying to build it again and updating it.
Here's my current decklist (Braids land destruction):
Creatures (12): 3xPhyrexian Scuta (I'll explain this later.) 3xBraids 3xHypnotic Specter (might switch for something else to improve mana curve) 3xWithered Wretch
Land Destruction (7): 4xSinkhole 3xRancid Earth
Hand Disruption (8): 4xDuress 4xHymn to Tourach
Other Spells (5): 2xPowder Keg/2xNull Rod (a group of my friends have power but another group doesn't so I switch depending who I play, for tournaments I'll proabably play Rods) 1xDemonic Tutor 1xDemonic Consultation 1xYawgmoth's Will
Mana (28): 4xDark Ritual 1xLotus Pedal 1xMana Vault 1xSol Ring 1xStrip Mine 4xWasteland 16xSwamp
Current Sideboard (15): 3xPhyrexian War Beast (I don't have Masticores, might cut all together since the only reason I would use them are against Keeper) 1xPowder Keg/1xNull Rod 3xDystopia 3xContagion 3xDiabolic Edict 2xPlanar Void
As you can see this is a budget deck, I don't have moxes or Black Lotus, I don't even have Pernacious Deeds.
First off, you guys are probably saying, "What? No one plays with Phyrexian Scuta anymore." But I think in this deck it's a better choice over Phyrexian Negator because I'm playing Braids so I can't afford to lose permanents to the Negator, plus aggro is starting to make a showing again in T1 and Scuta is a lot better against aggro than Negator. However, using Scuta really destroys my mana curve, that's why I have a Mana Vault and a Lotus Pedal in there, to help cast Braids and Scuta, and if I use Vault to cast Braids I can sack it to Braids next turn. To help the mana curve I might take out Hypnotic Specter for another lower cast cost creature, if someone have any ideas let me know. I have Nantuko Shades but I think it's too mana intensive to be much of a use in this deck.
Well, the premise of this deck is pretty simple, using land destruction to slow your opponent down and beat him/her with your creatures. Braids is key in this deck acting as additional land destruction to keep the pressure on and sometimes it even acts as creature kill if they have no more lands left.
I guess I should mention the original question I was asking, Planar Void or Tormod's Crypt in the sideboard?
Thanks.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I realize if I drop Null Rod down, it'll make my Sol Ring and Mana Vault useless but if I'm also able to stop the opponents moxes and Black Lotus I'm willing to make the sacrifice and I can always sac the ring and vault to Braids if they're useless.
