1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Merfolks, staying alive and adapting to the new metagame... on: September 25, 2009, 04:50:07 am
Hello, this is the list I'm actually playing.

// Lands
    4  Wasteland
    1  Strip Mine
    4  Island
    4  Tundra
    4  Flooded Strand
    1  Plains

// Creatures
    4  Lord of Atlantis
    3  Merrow Reejerey
    4  Cursecatcher
    4  Silvergill Adept
    3  Riptide Pilferer
    2  Sygg, River Cutthroat

// Spells
    1  Black Lotus
    4  Chalice of the Void
    1  Misdirection
    2  Spell Snare
    4  Force of Will
    1  Mox Sapphire
    1  Gush
    1  Time Walk
    1  Ancestral Recall
    3  Daze
    4  AEther Vial

// Sideboard
SB: 3  Kataki, War's Wage
SB: 2  Tormod's Crypt
SB: 2  Relic of Progenitus
SB: 4  Swords to Plowshares
SB: 4 open slots

I've highlighted the biggest differences in our lists, and those differences come from the different vision the deck we have.
Since this deck is capable of a very quick clock, I see it more like an aggro deck than a fish deck (to be clear: more like goblins than fish).
To keep the deck at his full speed I've chosen Chalice over null rod, since you have to play a creature each turn and "wasting" a turn for null rod slows the clock.
For the same reason, for the lack of turn one plays and for the bad matchup vs stack I've inserted Aether Vial.
The white splash, for SB only, tryes to fix the stack matchup and the non-blue aggro matchup.

Ok, thx. Hmph thats disappointment then, no playtesting online then :/ Well i guess i could test the classic, im not into standard at all. Any clue how much building deck "could" cost?

Hundreds of bucks.
3  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Magic Online Vintage? on: September 24, 2009, 05:00:07 am
You need to buy the cards.
And there is no Vintage on Magic Online. Most of the cards that define it are never been relased online. Closest thing is Classic.
4  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: September 21, 2009, 03:45:44 pm
There are ways to play around the card, but its still very good.  The more varied, playable tools there are that all decks can access, the scarier it gets to play with Ichorid:

1 Jailer
1 Trap
2 Tormod's
4 Leyline of the Void

This kind of stuff gets tough because it makes SB choices far more difficult, let alone when people go nuts like this:

1 Extirpate
1 Jailer
1 Trap
2 Tormod's
1 Relic
2 Leyline of the Void

Indeed diversifing your hate is certainly the best startegy against Ichorid, but this card changes nothing. There was already plenty of hate avaible, enough to fill 5-6 sb slots (becouse lest face it, nobody has 8 slots vs Ichorid alone). be prepared against this card becouse it's going to be played a lot, at least until they figure it's worse than tormod's.
5  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: September 21, 2009, 02:57:49 pm
Yay, more hate... is this good enough to see play in vintage against us?

Ravenous Trap
   2bb
Instant - Trap    Uncommon
If an opponent had three or more cards put into his or her graveyard from anywhere this turn, you may pay 0 rather than pay Ravenous Trap's mana cost.
Exile all cards from target player's graveyard.

Good enough? Yes.
Better than the existing? Nope.

This is worse than tormod. Tomod can only be solved via Unmask, Chalice or by playing around it's activaton.
This can be solved via Cabal,Unmask and obv playing around.

But Tormod will usually come down on turn 1 so you only have turn 1 on the play to deal with it through Unamask and Chalice.
This instead sticks in hand until used, so it can be discarded even in later turns (obv avoid to dredge in the same turn so it can't be used in response to discard!)
I guess, more realistically, that you have until turn two to deal with the trap, becouse if played on turn 1 it will do little damage to you and on turn 2 you can avoid dredging on the draw step, play land + cabal, discard it and use baazar.
6  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: September 15, 2009, 02:05:14 am
Hello everyone,
I have an upcoming tournament in october and I wanted to play Fatestitcher dredge. But looking at the results of the previus tournament in the same location I noticed that 60% of the partcipants had wasteland. It's Fatestitcher still good enough to deserve play in that meta or should I look at an older version with Petrified field?
Thanks for your advice
7  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [New Card Discussion] Iona, Shield of Emeria on: September 05, 2009, 11:15:35 am
A great addiction to Ichorid. IMHO it's going to replace Sadistic Hypnotist.
During game 1 Ichorid already has great control over the opponent's hand with Cabal Theraphy and Unmask but, a problem inherent with discard, sometimes loses to topdecks or topdeck tutors. This solves the problem nullifing possible topdecks and shutting down most spells in the opponent's hand.
8  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: September 05, 2009, 09:00:28 am
Guys, we just got a new toy. Say hello to:

Which traslates into:

Iona, shield of Emeria "Enormous mana cost that we really don't care about"
White
Legendary creature - Angel

Flying

When Iona, shield of emeria enters the battlefield
chose a color.
Your opponents can't play spells of the chosen color.

9  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: August 28, 2009, 07:44:37 am
I'm actually firing that list on mws and it works fine, it would wrk even better if I was a little more competent player  Sad

The only change I made is +1 Angel of Despair -1 Akroma. Angel is way better in the first game and still good after boarding in the oath plan.
Regarding Serum Powders, fitting them is hard but I'm going to try the following:

-1 Angel of Despair
-2 Life from the Loam
-1 Careful Study
+4 Serum Powders

Life pretty much has to go, but I'd try to squeeze at least one in to keep a reasonable amount of dredgers.
Study should be less needed with the four powders.
And Angel, while fine, get's cut only becouse I want to keep a single DR target.
10  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: August 27, 2009, 04:33:39 am
With 3 Loam that deck could certainly benefit from a maindeck Strip Mine. Don't know what to cut though.

Also, Blessing in the board seems a little out of place. After boarding you should still have 4 maindeck creatures, enough to avoid decking yourself with Oath.

Oh and btw, looks really fun!
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: The New Ichorid Thread! on: July 23, 2009, 05:57:15 am
This thread somehow blows because we already have like infinite lists, the majority of them being suboptimal.

This. And the old tread was good enough.

If that's your view, the better course is to just not post in the thread.  -DA
12  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Oath vs Tezzeret: Vintage Testing on: July 20, 2009, 09:34:08 am
In the first game the player with Ancestral passed the turn with 8 cards in hand. I suppose Ancestral was played during the opponent upkeep.  Wink

In the last game IMHO the Oath player should have played Misdirection on Thoughtseize, even if the opponent was empty-handed. This way he could protect his turn 2 oath wich is far better than turn 2 impulse.
Also, I found a little strange not playing 'Seize before Vault for the Tezz player.

I also noticed that you never never never lead with duress if you have something else to do on turn 1 play. Protecting your bomb isn't worth spending turn 1 duressing? I'd like to ear your thoughts on this.

Oh, btw, good article Wink.

13  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: A Can of Mono-Blue Merfolk @$$-Whupery on: July 20, 2009, 05:27:11 am
Hi! Very Happy
IMHO Bone's creatures are better than those you're playing Shaper. Sovereign is a bit too slow and the deck can live with 8 lord. Yup 8, I would fit in another Reejery. The Pilferer is nice too and adds some extra distruption (someting this deck needs!).

On the other hand I like your spell configuration more than Bone's one. Plenty of cheap distruption and 4 Null Rod. I woul try to squeeze in a Gush maybe in place of the fourth Pilferer. Standstill and stifle IMHO do not make the cut becouse often you're going to tap out in the early game.

Muta's are nice but in their place I would try to squeeze a few more off-color moxes, becouse the deck lacks turn 1 play aside from catcher.
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: GenCon Fish Feedback Needed on: July 20, 2009, 05:17:03 am
Extirpate alway does something, it's never a dead card. But IMHO it does very little, it's usually card disavantage and takes a long time before it's effect is noticeable on the board. Also Vintage is the world of singleton's and restricted, not really something that Extirpate likes. In my opinion those slots are better deserved to plow since, expecially in today meta and in a no proxy environment.
It does:
- Gives you a fighting chance against gobs or decks packing Tarmogoyf.
- Is better than 'pate vs Shop, dealing with everything except for Triskelion.
- It's better against Drain decks or Ritual decks, dealing with Confidants and Welders quickly and SB'ed Tarmos or Sowers.

I bolded quickly becouse he plays a singleton Darkblast but tutoring for that sometimes, expecially in the first turns of the game, is going to be too slow.
Aside from this debate I would also make this change to the initial list: -1 Echoing +1 Null Rod. Rod is awesome in today meta while Echoing was usually played in Fish decks to deal with DSC, but with the rise of Inkwell it's far less useful ( and he's got edict too!).
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: GenCon Fish Feedback Needed on: July 19, 2009, 03:10:11 am
Extirpate ain't good enough against Ichorid. If you extirpate bridges they're still going to get you with Ichorids, or with a Dread Return'ed Golgari Grave Troll. To completrely shut down an Ichorid deck you need to play two or three extirpates, wich usually won't happen during a game. Sure Extirpates buys time, but not enough to win with this combo-less deck.

As for extirpate being good against shop, I don't think so. To achieve what A_Outcast said you must:
- Be pretty lucky with both duress and extirpate in your opening hand.
- Most important, fetch for u-sea in the first turn of the game, an enormous risk . In fact, if you see the opening post duress is sided out against shop, a correct choice IMHO.

And, most important, stack wins by locking you out of the game. And he can achieve that in multiple ways, extirpating something won't be enough.
16  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Thirst replacements for tez: Brief test notes on: July 18, 2009, 03:13:31 am
Augury Adept? Like confidant but won't kill you under Key+Vault
17  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: GenCon Fish Feedback Needed on: July 18, 2009, 03:04:23 am
Extirpate is awful maindeck. Too slow, too conditional, too weak against Ichorid and useless vs Shop, Fish, Zoo and such....

I'd rather drop that and run Swords to Plowshares maindeck, wich is soo good in an non-proxy meta. Also Swords is way better than Path when you're running Null Rod, Wasteland, Strip Mine and Cursecatcher.
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Best win condition for Manaless Ichorid? on: July 12, 2009, 03:02:49 pm
My vote goes to Sadistic and Realm Razer. I'm not sure which one is better.

We all know the pros of the first, but the second IMHO deserves a test (which at the moment I can't do).
He has a similiar effect to Sadistic, denying your opponent resources rather than winning right away, but he saves you from topdeck tutors, topdecked yawg win and sometimes even from key-vault. Besides Unmask and Cabal Therapy do already disrupt your opponent's hand.
19  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Necro Painters on: July 08, 2009, 05:52:50 am
The deck is interesting  Very Happy
But six blasts seems a little too much to me, they're dead vs Shop and Ichorid decks.
I would cut a couple for a Imperial Seal and a Molten Frame (wich is a nice maindeck answer against Chalice, Null Rod and such...)

And the Chain of Vapor argument is valid for sure. Emerald Charm although I feel is too narrow.

Emerald Charm, while narrow, is a terrific answer to a key hate card. Certainly, Leyline has been run less lately and perhaps Charm should not be automatically boarded in as a 4-of every G2. That said, it has the ability to untap a Bazaar which could be what puts you ahead of the hate and able to win. Definitely a valid argument that Charm is not as useful as it once was, but it does have more than just the one effect

You know, with all these new mana-d "manaless" ichorid decks running fate stichers, this probably should just be a main deck card.  Since it basically functions the same way initially.

Aside from the fact that you need Emerald Charm in your opening hand while 'Stitcher can confortably sit in the grave.
Might as well play Breakthrough then. Wink
23  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: March 21, 2009, 04:53:10 am
As Meadbert has already stated  Platz is nowhere to be found at the moment. The same, at least for my meta, is true for Ensnaring Bridge. So the only troublesome permenents that you can find maindeck are Vault and Key.

In my opinion Angel could be dropped and that slot could be used in a completely different manner. Not running an answer to Vault/Key maindeck is dangerous, but I'm willing to take the risk (and with discard you should be able to prevent the combo often ).

If you still want to run an answer to that, the Ancient Grudge (suggested by Meadbert) or Woodfall Primus seems better. Even child of Alara deserves some consideration.
24  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: March 18, 2009, 03:30:04 am
Is Angel of Despair still necessary? Originally it was in the deck as a solution to Platiunium Angel, but now the latter sees zero play so I guess that angel may be cut for a better Dread Return target.

26  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: 1st place with BUG Fish at The Dutch Vintage 5th Edition on: October 17, 2008, 05:06:22 am
Congrats on the results.
The deck surely looks interesting but IHMO the side could use a little more work.
Also, in the fisrt game you should have swapped the Negates for the Jaylers. They're not stellar, but they can trade with most of Goblin threats.
27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays -- The Parfait Ambush! on: October 08, 2008, 02:30:31 am
steve tested this against me and it was a lot better than I gave it credit for.  I thought I'd be crushing it, but I ended up going 50/50.  Aven mindcensor is sooo annoying. It's mox diamond (a card that I usually think is total garbage) that makes the deck viable.  A little bit of acceleration goes a long way here.
Without Land Tax, Diamond isn't a mana source on its own.  It's sort of like imprinting Elvish Spirit Guide on Chrome Mox.
Not always true: if you have two lands in hand, you can play both land and mox on turn one.
28  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: October 02, 2008, 03:36:38 pm
I usually need the Sage after I had already reanimated all the stitchers, untapped, and used bazaar: often I still can't win on the spot .
I can't use Dread Return on Fatestitcher becouse Fatesticher does not have haste.
29  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Meadbert Manaless Ichorid Primer on: October 02, 2008, 11:28:00 am
The list I'm goldfishing with:

// Lands
    4  Gemstone Mine
    4  City of Brass
    4  Bazaar of Baghdad

// Creatures
    2  Cephalid Sage
    4  Fatestitcher
    1  Flame-Kin Zealot
    4  Narcomoeba
    1  Angel of Despair
    4  Golgari Thug
    4  Stinkweed Imp
    4  Golgari Grave-Troll
    4  Ichorid

// Spells
    4  Bridge from Below
    3  Dread Return
    4  Cabal Therapy
    4  Chalice of the Void
    4  Serum Powder
    1  Black Lotus

Had to cut Leylines to make room for additional lands. Cephalid Sage is needed, too often i find myself unable to win on turn 2. When the deck works it can usually dredge the whole library on turn 2. But too often I miss the second turn land drop (should I cut chalices to make room for more lands?).

The sideboard will probably be something like this:

4 Chain
4 Pithing (vs Wasteland, wich now is a problem for the main deck)
3 Wispmare
4 Contagion

Probably tomorrow I'll test a few games with some friends, I'll post the results here.
The list is probably still far from optimal. Thoughts?
