1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Angel-Geddon? on: April 25, 2008, 12:18:21 am
Hi, I am going to be blunt, so I apologize in advance. Your list is pretty bad for today's meta for a few reasons. Supression Field and Damping Matrix are not very good; almost all relevent creature abilities are triggered or static. They stop Welder, Trike, non-sliver Flash, and seldom seen cards (Top, Slaver) or cards that do not matter to you (Tormod's, new faerie from Shadowmoor). Only about half of Stax lists today run welder, the rest are Mono-Brown, regardless, Jugg to the face laughs at Matrix/Field. Flash will kill you in response to Field or Chain it before going off. They do not effect GAT, Oath, any form of storm, or Ichorid at all. You are running 7 cards main that will be useful a very small percent of the time.

Stonecloaker is awful. Most prevelant decks will bounce your Angel anyway; you are doing their job for them. Disenchant is not as good as it used to be. It should not be maindecked, and there are better options for the Side. Land Tax does nothing unless your opponent is ahead of you, and even then is only effective when planning to Armageddon. Armageddon is, as you said, too slow. If it would matter to the opponent, it would be countered anyway (you have no way to protect it).

Exalted Angel has (in my opinion) been improved; http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=143730. The Angel's lifegain is alot of the times irrelevant. Hoofprints is harder to remove, and churns out a token every 4 turns. Aven Mindcensor MUST be main. There are too many scrolls out there to leave it in the side. It's also nice to fizzle a fetch every now and again.

I would say the closest thing to what you want would be some type of GW Fish. Example:

Creatures

4 Gaddock Teeg
4 Samurai of the Pale Curtain
3 Kataki, War's Wage
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Aven Mindcensor
4 Glowrider

Spells

4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Skullclamp
2 Hoofprints of the Stag
1 Balance
1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Emerald

Lands

1 Strip Mine
4 Wasteland
4 Windswept Heath
4 Savannah
2 Flooded Strand
2 Plains
1 Forest

A list very similar to this just made top 4; http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=35587.0Very Happy

EDIT: Forgot to say, Gaddock Teeg is awesome. He cuts off such a large number of cards, it's amazing. No more Force, MisD, Gush, Chalice, Explosives, Tendrils, Gifts, FoF; the list just keeps going.

I built something extremely similar on MWS a while back. Here it is,

Land (17)

4 Mishra's Workshop
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Wasteland
3 Mishra's Factory
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy

Creatures (20)

4 Arcbound Ravager
4 Frogmite
3 Triskelion
3 Metalworker
3 Juggernaut
3 Myr Retriever

Spells (23)

5 Moxen
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Skullclamp
3 Cranial Plating
3 Chalice of the Void
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Vault
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring

Sideboard

4 Leyline of the Void
3 Sphere of Resistance
3 Pithing Needle
3 Duplicant

I haven't done too much testing with it (or other decks, holidays + school = no magic), but I am enjoying the maindeck Thorns, especially against the tons and tons of combo that is overrunning MWS. Juggs are always funtastic in shop decks. He provides the most consistent clock ever, as we all know.

I really like the deck, and think it shows alot of promise. I also love the Greaves (the concept of the Greaves at least Very Happy ).

Oh, what are your thoughts on Cranial Plating? It's been pretty good to me. Always nice to have a 9/2 Frogmite at the ready Smile

Very nice list! There were a few things that I found odd/was wondering about:

1. No D tutor?
2. How often were you able to cast Recall/Walk?
3. I was expecting more LFTL, any reason there aren't 2-3?
4. What were your results with the singleton Zombie Infestation?
5. Did you need the Maze at all? With 4 each of StP, Thoughtseize and 3 Lavamancers, it seems like overkill.

Anyway, congratulations on the split! Also congratulations on making a deck where MoxD belongs and Lotus does not  Very Happy

Thanks,
Kevin

DeezNaughts also runs a Trinket package. Bomberman and DeezNaughts already have a purpose though. Why would I tutor for Vise instead of Lotus/Dreadnought? It would only be useful in a very, very rare situation, and definitely not worth including.

The only place I can really see Black Vise being used is in some sort of Fish with Rule of Law/Arcane Lab. It really is a pretty weak card, as the opposing player will most likely not have much of a hand, and giving him one is an obvious bad strategy.

To sum up, good for Casual, bad for Vintage.

Thanks,
Kevin
