1  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Almost infinite loop, and the 50 minutes on: June 05, 2008, 07:41:30 am
A.) You must declare a number. There is no such thing as "infinite" in Magic. You can declare a really, really large number though.

B.) You can make an absurd amount of copies of Brain Freeze and resolve them however you want, since they go on the stack and each one resolves separately. As for the second part of your question, if your opponent wants you to play it out, then you must. If they just concedes, then you can move on.

You lose to everything Ichorid loses to and Ichorid is a better deck, so why play this?

Alright, so we've established that the current build is terrible to say the least.

That doesn't mean we can't try to help out.

My initial suggestions:

-Add Serum Powders
-Add Cabal Therapy/Unmask
-Add a more reliable way to cast your creatures if your original plan gets stopped
-Add fetches, lose the Land Grants
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Turbo Death - Years In The Making on: March 10, 2008, 01:11:38 pm
Going with the whole mulligan till you find Bazaar plan is worthless without Serum Powders.

Ichorid mulligans to oblivion WITH Serum Powders, which makes this deck that much more inconsistent.
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Single Card Strategy] Mystic Remora on: March 05, 2008, 12:56:35 pm
There is a deck called Tyrant Blue that uses 4 Remoras.

This list is in the other forum.

If you wanted new ideas, I would have to stew on it a bit.
7  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Lucky? Yeah, That's the Point on: March 04, 2008, 11:55:35 am
Here's the equation you're interested in:

Quote from: Stephen
skill = a discreet, individual skill
SKILL = the sum/net effect of the collection of multiple skills
TS = Technical Playskill, meaning in-game decision-making skills

Outcomes in Chess = SKILL(Chess)= skill(TS) There are no other variables. There is no coin flip, no draws, no dice.

So, for Magic:

SKILL (without chance) = Skill (TS)

And:

SKILL (with chance) = [W * (skill(TS) + enhanced (TS)) – chance losses caused by proper TS)] + [A * skill(archetype selection)] + [B* skill(deck tuning)] + [C* skill(sideboard design] + [D*skill(mulliganing)] + [E*skill(bluffing)] + [F*skill(all other skills)]

W, A, B, C, etc are the modifiers that describe the difference in terms / importance / significance / weight that we might ascribe to each of these skills.

You mentioned not being able to cast Meditate because you're using up your resources in a Remora. There is a strong chance that in 4 cards you will find a threat, and at the very least, some defensive spells.
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Deck]Tyrant Blue - (Kid Tested, TMD approved) on: March 04, 2008, 10:07:39 am
Double post somehow =\
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Deck]Tyrant Blue - (Kid Tested, TMD approved) on: March 04, 2008, 10:05:49 am
If your Remora isn't helping you anymore, but preventing you from playing spells, then let it die.
11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Deck]Tyrant Blue - (Kid Tested, TMD approved) on: February 29, 2008, 11:58:16 am
In my opinion, the biggest problem with this deck is not in it's contents or in it's theory, but playing it correctly. The biggest problem is deciding the priority of spells. No, not Magic the Gathering's rules on priority, but how high a spell is ranked in terms of being dangerous. Of course this will be different for every person who plays with counters. This brings me to my point of the level of difficulty, knowing when to counter and when to hold.

To counter, or not to counter? That is the question.

Let's say you're going up against Flash.

Turn 1: Land, Mox -> Flash.
Result: You lose.

Of course, this is a must counter. Alas, things are not always so easy.

Turn 1: Land, Duress.
Result: You lose a spell of their choice.

Now this is little more situational. You have to ask yourself: Do I have anything I want to keep? You also have to ask: Are they going to take something that could possibly enable them to combo? If yes, you might consider countering. If no, then let it resolve.

The biggest problem is when they bait you. Say you're playing against MUD.

Turn 1: Workshop -> Metalworker.
Result: Very explosive turn 2.

This is a very strong play for MUD, considering Metalworker is the engine of the deck. Say you only have 1 pitch counter, do you counter? Let's say you Force it. Then they go:

Turn 1: Workshop(tapped), Mana Crypt(or Mox, Mox, or Mox into Mana Vault) ->Sphere of Resistance.
Result: Your spells cost 1 more to play now. No Mox? No turn 1 Remora.

You always have to be aware of baiting. If you believe for a second you're being baited and what they cast isn't going to lose you the game, then let it go. In the above example it's not really fair, because the MUD player could be holding a very explosive turn 2 hand. So, do you risk it?

That will be the key when playing this deck.

The short answer is yes.
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Ichorid with mana? on: February 28, 2008, 08:28:07 am
The extended Dredge list uses colored mana and breakthrough/tolarian winds. I don't think anyone has tried it in vintage because Manaless Ichorid is just more explosive.

16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Not-So-MUD on: February 26, 2008, 09:50:14 am

Sideboard

3 Staff of Domination
4 Sphere Of Resistance
4 Leyline Of The Void
2 Duplicant

The Deck
First off, this has only been tested online and has not had it's tournament debut. I'm planning on debuting it this Saturday at a local tournament.

The deck has a different ways of going about to win. The main one being Metalworker->Critters/Lock Pieces and taking the aggro route. Another path is the Tinker->DSC/Land Muncher kill. Mishra's Factory can provide the beats if it comes down to it. This version of MUD is a lot less explosive than solid brown but I believe it has a more stable game due to the searches and different options.

Chalice of the Void is up in the air as a chalice at 1 is hell for a lot of decks, but it could be trouble for yours as well. The sideboard is very situational and should be tuned to your metagame. Staff from the sideboard provides another kill as you could just combo off post-board.

Common Questions and Answers
Why should I play this over Supreme Stax?
If you want to control the game more, than run Supreme Stax. If you want to come out of the gate swinging, then give this a try.

Why is there only one Crucible?
For that random Waste/Strip Lock you happen to draw into. It's also a tinker target if you are being Waste/Strip Locked.

Why not add *this* and *this*?
If you suggest it, I will test it and let you know how it goes.

This is a silly/dumb idea.
Time will tell.

If this is in the wrong forum, please move it  Very Happy

Did you try out Krosan Grip from the sideboard for Oath?
18  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Building a Better Mud! on: February 25, 2008, 11:26:12 am
Some observations from the local tournament I went to last Saturday:

I went 2-1 in the 3 rounds of swiss and lost to the same person in the Top 8.

Overall I got 7th.

Vashino Heretic absolutely tears this deck apart, with the only main deck answer being the Trisks. Pithing needle in from the sideboard might be a viable option, but I don't know what to cut for it.
19  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Stifle Nought on: February 24, 2008, 02:16:53 pm
I'd have to agree with the poster above me. 1st turn SDT means you won't get to look at more cards until your upkeep or the next turn without a mox. Therefore, it would be more beneficial to Thoughtseize/Duress 1st turn then SDT + 1 land to use it 2nd turn.
20  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Discussion] Transformational Sideboards on: February 22, 2008, 10:24:21 am
What is written below is my own opinions and are not meant to be taken as right or wrong.

What do you really gain from a transformational SB?
I believe the main thing you gain is the surprise factor. I don't know what decks generally side in for the GAT match up, but to have a turn 1 or 2 oath drop down would be a shock after facing GAT.

Are the slots given to this transformation better served with the standard issue GAT choices?  Would you rather run around with 4 Eflux in case you come across some artifact based decks?  Or would you rather take them by surprise?
I don't know about Stax but Oath, in my experience, can race MUD. TyrantOath has the best shot due to the bounce.

Is the aspect of surprise enough to make that kind of difference?  I think that this can boil down to the SB cards that your opponent drew out.  Are those cards good against Oath as well or did he just SB in dead cards against you.
This all depends on what they sideboard in. In my MUD deck I would usually side in Staff of Domination's, so in this case, if I combo out it doesn't matter if you're GAT or Oath. But if you take game 2 with Oath I would bring in Jester's Cap, so if you felt switching back to GAT my Cap's would be a lot less effective.

In respect to the Turbo Gush thread, what do you gain from transforming into Oath or Bomberman?  The point of the thread seemed that the deck was fast, drew the pieces it needed in a timely manner etc, so why a transformational sb?
I have no experience with this deck, playing it or playing against it, so I won't comment.

What kind of meta game considerations need to be given if one wanted to attempt this kind of boarding?
I think the main problem you're going to have if you do this is the actual TyrantOath. Their deck will be stronger at getting and supporting their Oath. I wouldn't do it if there is a lot of TyrantOath in your meta.
21  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Building a Better Mud! on: February 22, 2008, 10:11:05 am
I have been running a version of Meandeck MUD 2.0  for the last 2 weeks now at a local 10 proxy tournament, and I guess I'll write up my report from the last one I went to. There were only 11 people at this one so there were 3 rounds of swiss. They were originally going to cut to the top 4, but they cut to the top 8 just for kicks.

The changes I made to the original deck:
Main Deck:
None
SB:
-2 CoW
-2 Serum Powders
-2 Jittes
+4 Staff of Domination
+2 Jester's Cap

Explanations:
CoW - I had them the first time I played and they were just under preforming. I sided them in and either never saw them or wished they were something else at the time.

Serum Powders - Only once did I ever mull to 4 without getting a Leyline against Flash and I still pulled it out.

Jittes - See CoW

SoD - Comboing out is always fun, but it's even nicer coming from the sideboard when they don't expect it.

Jester's Cap - I really wanted a 3rd one but couldn't find one around town. They performed exceptionally well every game they came in.

Some more explanation:
I am no good at sideboarding. No, really. I can hardly ever decide what to take out. I always know what I want to bring in, but never know what to take out.

The Tourney

Round 1 against some sort of Fish deck? (I never got to see a lot of his deck, you'll see why)
Game 1: Turn 1 Juggernaut followed by turn 2 SoFI + equip proved to be too much.
SB: +4 Staffs, -1 Tangle Wire, -1 SoFI, -1 Chalice of the Void, -1 Mana Crypt
Game 2: Turn 1 Metalworker into a turn 2 Staff. Combo'd out on turn 2.
(1-0)

Round 2 against Mono Red Burn-Beats?
Game 1: I get an early Sphere while they keep dropping power and mountains. I get a chalice for one and after 6 turns they concede.
SB: See round 1
Game 2: Their turn 1 consisted of Mountain->Spark Elemental->Blazing Shoal pitching Dragon Tyrant. I take 13. A couple turns later after some Tangle Wires I get a Chalice for 1 plus Metalworker/Staff. I combo out and they concede.

(2-0)

So far so good.

Round 3 against Supreme Stax
Game 1: I get a turn 1 Metalworker. He drops a Goblin Weilder which Trisk takes care of on my next turn. I ride the Trisk and Metalworker equipped with a SoFI to the finish.
SB: See round 1
Game 2: Turn 1 Tinker->DSC. My Duplicants were in the sideboard so I concede.
SB: +4 Duplicants, -4 can't remember
Game 3: Turn 2 Metalworker Staff combo seals the deal.

(3-0)

I'm 2nd/tied for 1st after 3 rounds of swiss.

Top 8 against StormTendrils
Game 1: Tinker->DSC. Enough said.
SB: I take a chance here and only side in 2 Duplicants along with my 2 Jester's Cap.
Game 2: I Cap him and remove his 2 Tendrils and Will. He concedes.
SB: I take an even bigger chance siding out the 2 Dups and 2 other things for 4 Staffs.
Game 3: I get an early Metalworker, but no Staff. He gets a turn 2 Tinker and I am preparing for a loss when he says, "Oh.. I sided out my DSC." Whew. He gets a Mana Crypt and ends his turn. Turns out it wouldn't have mattered since I top deck a staff and combo out.

(4-0)

Top 4 against Supreme Stax
Game 1: It's a little fuzzy but it came down to Jugg beats.
SB: Same SB as before.
Game 2: He gets CoW/Strip lock on me and I concede.
Game 3: This game took a little over an hour to finish. It came down to him getting a Weilder and a Trisk to ping me to death. He had a terrible start and I kept a terrible hand. If I mulled to 6 I might have won.

(4-1)

Overall I came in 3rd.

Thoughts on Staffs: I sided them in for 7 games and combo'd out 4 of those games. I wouldn't take these out for anything.

Thoughts on Jester's Cap: I believe the Caps greatly improved my combo matchup and I will probably add a 3rd to my SB.

Changes I am currently considering: I am thinking of moving the Staffs to the main deck along with 2 Duplicants.

What are your sideboard strategies against combo, aggro, and control?
23  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: MAD MUD on: February 20, 2008, 03:19:15 pm
What are your feelings on Tangle Wire? It slows down a lot of decks and after all, a tapped equipment is still a very usable equipment.
24  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Free Article] Stratfordbury - TEH RECKONING on: February 11, 2008, 09:42:21 am
Would it be more efficient to run 1 pyrite and 1 aether? You can draw out with either and deal with pretty much everything.
25  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Free Article] Stratfordbury - TEH RECKONING on: February 10, 2008, 09:16:04 pm
So the kill is just swinging out after the board is clear.
26  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Free Article] Stratfordbury - TEH RECKONING on: February 10, 2008, 08:52:01 pm
This is a total noob question but how does your Bomberman kill? I know other lists that use Pirite Spellbomb to recur infinite damage. I'm just confused on how comboing with Aether Spellbomb works.

Get 4 Dreadnaughts and a 2cc creature?

Is it worth waiting a full turn to attack to get away from Trisk/Fire/Burn killing your slivers?
