I will probably wait a few months before revisiting vintage, but I did do another video about Scars of Mirrodin (no real spoilers). I don't think its as good but hopefully still worth your 5 minutes:

Broke the 1000 views mark, thanks to everyone who shared this with anybody (in particular Eternal Central and top8 magic).

Thanks for the positive comments. The video has had 700 views which is pretty sweet. And a couple of people were even talking about it at the Waterbury without realizing that I was the person who made it. =D.
8  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Waterbury Top 16 Decklists and Metagame Breakdown on: September 14, 2010, 10:11:54 am
Mark I know we had this discussion but I thought it was interesting (and have since thought about it) so here are my arguments for keeping.

1. On the play with 7 you should have to keep before he does (unless he kept out of order which I don't recall) so you don't know there is a high probability he keeps less then initial six.

1b. If he does keep his initial 7 then his hand is pretty good anyways so I am no convinced a Leyline no Disruption hand is any better then this (which is what you end up having to go for). You often won't have pressure after for specific hate anyways. So in my mind the question is whats better.

The above or.. A leyline hand with pressure. I firmly believe in the former since your mana is set up and it requires your opponent to play correctly. Furthermore with only 7 real threats it seems likely that even if you hit a Leyline you might not have pressure or the mana to play dudes.

1c. Your opponent was bad/new. I believe he would not have slow dredged. He would of played a Bazaar and then tried to find answers to needle. Playing your opponent is as much as part of this game as anything else.

9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Watebury Top 16 Decklists and Metagame Breakdown on: September 13, 2010, 09:08:46 pm
My matches were:

R1: Bye
R2: MUD (2-0)
R3: Noble Fish (0-2)
R4: TPS (2-0)
R5: Dark Times (2-0)
R6: Bomberman (2-0)
R7: ANT (Draw)
R8: Control Slaver (2-1)
R9: Dredge (0-2)

I was told that my top 8 opponent was light on his Chain/Claim package, and thus looked hard for a hand that had Leyline in it.  I saw 32 cards in my opening hands for game 2 and saw 0 Leylines.  I didn't draw my hate, and thus didn't get there.

I'm ok with the loss, as I didn't misplay and played fairly well over the course of the day.

I also felt like there were a lot of Shops and Dredge.  I don't recall seeing much of Owen's Jace Control list from Champs, which surprised me a little.  I also felt like there was more combo there than I had thought there would be.

And Steve, for the love of God, please stop misspelling my name.  There's only one L in Detwiler.  In every reference to me in your SCG articles, and every time you have used my last name on TMD you have spelled it incorrectly.  If I can remember Menendian, you can remember Detwiler.

EDIT: Steve, my sideboard is missing a Pithing Needle (it is currently 14 cards.)

I thought you mulliganing your opening 7 game 2 against dredge was a mistake but I could be wrong.

On the Play - 2 Serum Powder, Academy, Sphere, Needle, Wasteland, Mox Sapphire.

Guess I am going to be that guy....

Costs went up by $140 (20% of 700). and prizes based on 120 People went down $200 (250$ store credit x .8 conversion rate). I.e. the numbers don't quite add up, though personally I appreciate all the honesty regarding the breakdown of fees and prizes.

I assume your helping pay for the room or w/e. Certainly won't dissuade me from coming (this will be by far the farthest I have traveled for vintage).

SB: 1 [ARB] Sphinx of the Steel Wind
SB: 1 [V09] Tinker
SB: 2  Sower of Temptation
SB: 1  Mystic Remora
SB: 1  Spell Pierce
SB: 2  Yixlid Jailer

Notes on Maindeck: Wanted to Beat Shops+Noble Fish. Secondary Concern was Tezz+TPS+Oath. Tested with Ad N and Tolarian (changes from first list). AdN was really bad for me. Lots of 4s in the deck, + already life loss from Thoughtseize and Bob meant Ad N was bad. I decided to run 3rd cabal because i liked just killing people the hard way (aka rituals + tendrils). The SB plan was really good against fish (and pretty much the only thing I tested). The idea being to have answers to meddling mage and overload their swords with must kill targets. LAst minute decision to run darkblast over slaughter pact/death mark cause people were desperately searching for cold eye selkies.

I had some interesting decisions which I want input on:
1.
Rnd 1, Game 1: Against unknown opponent do you keep on the play:
Ritual x 2, Desire, Yawg Will, Lotus Petal?

I did never drew land/mana source had ritual countered on turn 4.

2. Same opponent is playing the oath deck with Iona, Terrastodon, Darksteel. He has spell pierces no drains.
Do you keep:
2x Thoughtseize, 2x Fetch, Tolarian Academy, Mox Emerald, Mox Sapphire.

2b.
I did, and led with thoughtseize seeing:
Jet, TEzz, Vault, Merchant Scroll, Misty Rainforest, Sensei's Divining Top, Mana Crypt

What do you take?

I took the Sensei's divinging top. I know its not the conventional choice but I think it is correct. Basically I wanted to try and make vault a blank while I buy some time. Notice he is bottleknecked on blue mana.
The game played out very odd:
He casts just vault on turn 1, holding the crypt. I then thoughtseize (hes drawn forest) and take tezz (I could take merchant scroll here and pray he never draws blue, I don't know). He merchant scrolls for recall, still short on blue. I draw mystical, he shoots off recall slumping a bit. I tutor for sad sac, and resolve it taking yawg will, darksteel, voltaic key. Turns out he has drawn Terrastodon and Iona (I though he would side out terrastodon) and the next turn (turn 4 or 5) he hardcasts terrastodon only blowing up his mana crypt. I find chain for the terrastodon but hes drawn more moxes (4 at this point) and casts it immediately wiping out 3 of his things.

3.
Against Dredge on the draw in Game 3, I know he has chalices and he has seen my jailers. Do you keep?
Sea, Ancestral Recall, Tendrils, Dark Ritual, Ponder, 2x Fetch.

3b.
I did and he went turn 1 chalice + bazaar off a mull to 5. How do you play my turn 1?

I just cast ponder seeing confidant, ritual, academy. I draw ritual (mistake). But my logic on ponder was that I wanted to make sure that I didn't draw moxes, and taking the best card then shuffling would be the best way to set up turn 2 kill. Doesn't matter much has his first activation leaves him discarding GGT, GGT, Ichorid. Which then therapies me a bunch on turn 2. I play confidant and fetch (with an out being yawg will) but it doesn't matter and I die on turn 4.

1-2 end of day. Liked the deck, hate dredge.

I believe it was
2 TPSesque
3 Noble Fish
3 Shop Decks

There wasn't much dredge (at least not near the top tables)
And not much Oath either
Tons of UGW Fish.
Tezzerators floated around the top but couldn't seem to get by fish decks which were almost universally packing maindeck THadas, Katakis, Trygons, Mindcensor's + Usual goodies.

Beaver ran unbelievably hot.

Speaking for those of us in the Penn/Drexel area 15 and 10 proxies is close to the difference in us coming out.

Most of us would even be willing to pay for the extra proxies (Personally I like the idea of +1 dollar per proxy over 10 with it going straight to the highest non-proxy finisher in the form of store credit).

First of all a thanks to Andrew for lending Sam a deck. He isn't really comfortable playing Force of Will when he can play 2/1s for 1 and maindeck REBs. For anyone interested in the sligh deck going forward, Sam and I are pretty sure it would be correct to move to a green splash for Kird Ape (over goblin cadets) and Goyf, with PoP becoming Fireblast. It also makes students from berkeley more likely to come down to participate in the 1Ks if we know we can mise decks.

Unfortunately due to being paired down in the last round and having the same breakers as Jeff (both dead last), I knew going into round 5 that I would be the only 9 pointer to not make it.

I played over Ad Nauseam over TPS due to proxy constraints, and I played ANT over GWSx, because I really didnt like the deck in testing. I think that in a field of Drains (TEzzerets and Remoras) I would much prefer ANT.
Xantid Swarm was absolutely insane and allowed me to beat both blue decks that I faced. Unfortunately I overloaded on Ichorid and skimped on Shop Cards (There were obviously 4-5 shops and no ichorids).

Dan Messino's deck had a neat interaction with welders and scullers. The last deck in the metagame was another copy of Remora.

Thanks to Superstars for hosting, it was a pretty awesome being able to play some constructed tournaments after going into withdrawal.

Mana Drain _AND_ Daze. I've got my eye on you now!
If I ever make it for a real life tournament i guess you will have my number.

If anyone wants to test vintage, I am usually on MWS testing (mostly PT formats but Vintage also) most afternoons (12-4 PST). You can AIM me (toor271). I am down to play pretty much any matchup.

So what's the meta you wouldn't want to see with this deck? Just other combo? Also do you bring out confidants ever(seems like it might be correct versus certain versions of fish)?

Not necessarily banned in eternal formats. I would imagine something like this:
Balance
Necro
Skullclamp
Top
Regrowth
Hymn to Tourach
Dark Ritual
Strip Mine
Mind Twist
The Rack
Tinker
Land Tax
Crop Rotation

etc... all cards which are not more then 5$ today.

How is your matchup against oath with null rod generally speaking?

What do u sideboard out when u bring the oath package?
I assume something like
Crypt, Tezz, Key, Vault, drain?
25  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Sharuum Oath on: December 11, 2008, 07:02:38 pm
To clarify the the zombies can be stopped as long as the opponent has the ability to sacrifice a creature.
So welder (assuming they have a dude to weld), fanatic, a removal spell that doesnt rfg etc.. all stop the zombies plan.

I know that. but I was pretty sure that if I even ask to talk to the judge in private, he would of known what was in my hand. Since he had seen my list and knows my competence level.

Very Brief Mini -Report (3rd/4th)
I am starting to get familiar with the vintage metagame and I learned in my last experiment (GaT) I am not nearly competent enough to play combo in this format. An interesting fact is that in my last 3 vintage tournaments my losses have all come from Web, LSV and Brett Allen. So I pretty much decided to metagame against yawgmoth's will.

To that end I ended up playing U/R standstill, with an updated list from COry and MArco was awesome enuff to lend me the cards so I could get there.

Rnd 1: Grim Long with $1000 yawg will.
His windfall fizzles and i am left with a 4 land hand (he had duressed and thougthseized post windfall. 2 of those land were wasteland. He upkeeps a vamp for will and i ice his only other black source.
game 2: CHalice for 1 + 2 Forces  = win.

Rnd 2: Suicide Black
Game 1 he massively floods.
Game 2 He keeps a hand with turn one hippy and no other land. I chain it. He rituals it out again. I echoing truth it. ANd that is what we call tempo.

Rnd 3: Web
DOnt remember much except I am pretty sure i had game 3 locked up but couldnt kill him fast enough to stop the draw.

Rnd 4: Control Slaver
He mulls to 5. I force his welder then double wasteland him
He has a pretty nutty draw. I have null rod and standstill.

Rnd 5: Draw with Fish

Top 8: Same deck from round 1.
Game 1 He mulls and cant must much. His windfall gives me a force.
Game 2 He keeps a double mox no land hand. I have null rod.

Top 4: LSV with Grim Long
GAme 1 he turn 1 necros
Game 2 he turn ones LED and Lotus But I had turn 1 null rod. His turn one also had necro.

Funny story from Game 1. I am wondering whether I can echoing truth necro to prevent the draw or at least do it on my turn. However I dont want to ask the njudge since that will give away my plans. Turns out thats not how it works. Go me.

I liked the deck a lot but wojuld have killed for thoughtseize all day.
29  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] SCG P9 Tournament Report: 5th Place on: May 29, 2008, 07:47:53 pm
I am pretty sure I am going to play this list Sunday at our local vintage tourney.

Some questions.
How bad is an opposing bob for you? In a deck like next level doomsday is this a must counter? When playing workshop decks is your plan to just eot a bounce spell and combo them out? Or can you feasibly build an incremental dryad?

Why has no one considered sideboarding bob in GAT for the combo/control matchups?
30  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Eudemonia Mox Ruby (5/4), now with pictures. on: May 07, 2008, 06:26:22 pm
This is the monoblue player. First off I would like to thank Marco and Scott for lend me the cards needed to complete the deck.

I played the version that was posted here with the small changes of 1 Ophidian instead of 1 Meloku main and Threads of Disloyalty over 1 brainfreeze. I had never played a game with the deck prior to this tournament and it certainly caught up to me.

I really punted the semis and round 2 and hopefully next time I wont suck so bad. Lots of fun though and looking forward to the next one.
