@Nephtis : Tendrils is loosing life, not dealing damages, so it can't be redirected to a planeswalker....

I think that everyone also forget that with 4 artefacts in play, this guy is autokill without passing the turn, especially when played in Mid/late game of a control mirror.

Loss of life counts as damage.

4  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: so what's up with Painter.dec on: August 26, 2008, 08:10:31 pm
to me the problem with painter stems from the various decks that are starting to accumulate that share similar focal points or use cards that mitigate painter's ability (goblin welder as a prime example).  Various decks are trying different strategies based upon how they can best compete against these decks.  Painter has 3 options it can go... it can go the control route involving the REB plan, it can go combo withe all resources attempting to set up the combo, or it can be thrown in as another out.  Ultimately, the problem is that painter turns into a mere 2/2 w/o REB or grinder which, because of the limited # of cards that abuse it cause vast differenes in the game play of the archetype due to player preferences.  w/o more variety or a stronger power play than what it currently exhibits then painter becomes an unpredictable archetype.

Painter's servant is a 1/3. also i never liked the deck because bomberman just seems better in terms of combo/control. another thing is will the increase of null rod this deck just gets worse, my feeling is most of the painter top 8's were just good players with good pairings.

I am curious to see the current version of the manaless disruption build, after page 5 of this thread. Where are we standing right now on this?
7  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 17, 2008, 06:00:44 pm
I was by no,  means saying mages should ever be main decked in bomerman.  Mindcensor is a meta house right now and should aways be played IMO.
As for mage against ichorid, The cards you side out are things like force of will or mana drain.  I have never had a chance to counter a spell against ichorid, except cabal therapy and then they just play another. Counters are dead cards, and mage can stop them for a few turns. It gives you the time to set up crypt recursion or just win.

To me the point of mage as a 2 or 3 of in the SB is not to completely shut down a deck, but be a solid card to side in against a lot of your problem match ups.  Its a compliments the hate cards. I would side a grizzly bears in against fish, cause they cant attack into it, and I will win the long game.

Also, I would not count on winning game 1 all that often against ichorid.  Bomerman has a better game 1 then a lot of decks cause of trinket mage, but it can be very slow if you keep a hand with no moxes (assuming you don't know what your playing)

I just feel that Meddling Mage has no home in this deck, its not maindeckable and other sideboard options are better. Regarding fish, auriok salvagers is more than big enough to deal vs their creatures. and regarding ichorid with all the mana excel in this deckyou normally will get a turn 2 trinket mage, and its not uncommon to see him come out turn 1(keep in mind i run petal). i can not forsee myself dropping a game to ichorid often... I think that is a match that we should not be concerned about, right now we need to get up on slaver and long, that is what we should be preparing for.
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 16, 2008, 10:21:09 pm
Like, Cabal Therapy is a serious problem on turn 1-2; Meddling Mage turn 2 doesn't stop them from putting guys in their graveyard and beating you senseless with them.

It does stop them from flashing back Therapy off a Narcomoeba or Ichorid, though, and making a bunch of zombies for free from Bridge. Most of the time, it doesn't really matter if Therapy hits something or not. The zombies are the bigger, more immediate problem.

Wouldn't it be smarter to just Meddling Mage the Dread Return so they can't just say "Hope he doesn't have any counters" and beat you turn 2?

Therapy enables Dread Return by a.] making zombies to sac, b.] clearing Force of Will out of their hand to stop it. I've tested this matchup and Therapy has always been my first naming with Meddling Mage, with Dread Return coming second [if I find another Mage].

Honor the Fallen is certainly better against them.  Like, if I had Mage in my sideboard already I might board it in, but I might also board in Wrath of God.  Doesn't mean I'm expecting to do anything with it, just that Mana Drain is THAT bad in the matchup.

Honor the Fallen is win-more. Every time I've used it, I was already in a favourable position anyway. Bomberman has a better matchup vs Ichorid than any other control deck, & I'd rather spend my board slots fighting Fish and Long.

I've been running Meddling Mage in the main, instead of Mindcensor, to test it out and see if it was worth it. I've come to the following conclusions:

Slaver: Mage sucks, Mindcensor is great.
Bomberman: Mage is too situational, Mindcensor wins this matchup.
Long: Mage can be good with an experienced player, but Mindcensor is far better all around.
Uba Stax: Mage can be great if you keep them off Barbarian Ring. Mindcensor sucks.
5C Stax: Mage is terrible, and Mindcensor actually keeps them off their tutors [somewhat], and is better.
Goblins: Mage can be good, but is mostly for chump blocking. Mindcensor flies over them, and stops Matron. Decent, but both mostly suck.
Ichorid: Mage names Therapy and DR. Mindcensor is useless.
Fish: Mage can name Grunt and Bob. Mindcensor is okay.

On the whole, I'd say Mage should be in the board, and Mindcensor in the main. Almost everyone seems to be playing Slaver and Long nowadays. It's too 'hands-free' not to be good.

Regarding cabal therapy, i just missed top 8 today on breaks and i beat ichorid game one twice, i can honestly tell you that i beat ichorid with a lone tormods crypt, lets face it if you know how their deck functions then you should be fine. On mindscensor this card is great! i mean he stops sooo many decks in their tracks and he shuts their mana base off alot, if you nullify even 1x fetch vs long or slaver it sets them back greatly trust me. meddling mage has no room in this deck, just look at the mage vs mindcensor analysis: almost every situation mindcensor was better, and where he wasen't a better sideboard card could be used i think hes great in a fish variant but he just doesen't belong here.
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 15, 2008, 07:07:28 pm
the thing about honor the fallen is it works with narcomoeba on the stack, so when they flip one over and you honor the fallen it completley takes a. their momentum away, and b. buys you a few turns. i mean if you are concerned about cabal therapy well you could just honor is response anyway. i dont think its neccesary because of how good the ichorid match actually is. Right now i would try and focus at least 6 sideboard slots to long, and about 4 to stax. the rest would be meta decisions.
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 15, 2008, 02:41:19 pm
here's the thing, early beats are huge against slaver, and thirst is 10 times better for the slaver deck than it is for you, considering trinket mage is your most important card any how. trinket will find you lotus and thus your combo. i run repeal so if i have a meddling mage against slaver i could either eot repeal my mage then thirst(which i probably would never do) or i can repeal my mage and find my other combo peice, i.e. spellbomb. thirst is redonkulous in slaver for the sole purpose of putting bots in their yard, or dumping the bots from their hand. i usually find myself countering thirst if they have a welder in play because that card can just destroy me. regarding ichorid: meddling mage is a crap plan to begin with against that deck, they will just destroy you! the best plan against ichy if your actually concerned about that match would be honor the fallen out of the board but to be quite honest i think the match is a good 70-30 in your favor game one! trinket mage is a very likely turn one play and crypting them will buy you at least two turns if you crypt at the right time, use those extra turns to play out salvager and recurr crypt. after board, boarding in two more tormods to up the total to 3 crypt should just seal the deal! meddling mage v.s. orims chant: completely meta dependent, my meta is heavy long so i honestly do not see myself entering a tourney without chants, however if you have a oath/slaver meta then i would deffinatly pack some meddling mages. share your thoughts guys thanks!
11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 14, 2008, 08:46:34 pm
what other matchups would you want meddling mage? its obv its prob a star against long, however is it better in the board than orims chant? im sure its pretty good if you have it against slaver, also what do you guys think of like a transformational sideboard? could we just turn this deck into fish easily thus nullifying the crypts and extirpates they may board in against you? i was thinking about this earlier.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 14, 2008, 02:40:55 pm
remora despite what people think doesen't really slow you down. between sol ring land drops and mana crypt, also moxen its cost gets very easy to pay. i think the pros certainly out weigh the cons. i like meddling mage and surely will test it.
13  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 14, 2008, 11:21:39 am
hey, my main deck is a little different than most. my disruption for long looks like as follows:

4x fow
4x mana drain
2x mana leak
4x orims chant
4x mystic remora
3x aven mind scensor

Now it is important to differenciate between good cards against long, and actual hate cards against long. i would never consider fow etc hate cards as they run just as much fow as you do, and 4x duress effects if not more. there is something you need that stares long in the face and intimidates it. and the wolf is right, if you wanna play bomberman in this meta then you must commit to beating long. this is why mystic remora is such a great card, its cheap, efficient, i mean bottom line is it either will draw you a ton of cards, or it will give you time to build your mana base and have drain mana up, possibly double drain mana up! I think it is appropriate to run this as a sideboard:
4x orims chant
4x mystic remora
4x swords
1x tormods crypt
2x serenity
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 13, 2008, 06:50:57 pm
Here is the thing, first and foremost i cannot see long deck winning late-game after you establish your mana base, there is just too much you can do to them at that point. Long usually plays 12 lands, so while your hitting land drop after land drop eot thirsting and what not, they probably are gonna still have 1-2 lands in play. Playing a deck post board with 10x counters, and 4x chant, is completely overwhelming for the long deck. they may have a force or two but thats all! i have tested this match alot in the past weeks and i find the later the game goes, the better i am doing. as for chant, i am perfectly content with it over crypt. what stops long from bouncing crypt, or even countering it like the chant for that matter? the fact case and point is orims chant not only does what crypt does by shutting off yawg will, but it does soo much more! And if your opponent isn't expecting orims chant? then even better. I understand we all have our own play styles and preferences when it comes to deck choice and design but as long as "long" is a factor, you can expect i am bringing orims chant!
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 13, 2008, 04:52:48 pm
i am not sure if i agree with the fact that chant is terrible vs. long. for one thing even if they do duress you, you have the option to chant in response, and usually before they duress they dark rit. also having senseis top in play gives you the ability to shroud chant from duress if its in your top three, as long as you keep chant in reach they can duress all they want, chant remains hidden. my experience with long is there is no proactive way to beat the deck because they will always be faster, more bomb heavy, and more synergistic than you, so your plan in this match is to a. draw the late game: the later the game goes on the higher the chance of you winning becomes! and b. pack as much disruption as possible, i think people get the perception that they need to be proactive because long is quick. however, in my experience i think you are the reactive deck here and must do everything to disrupt their one "big" turn. once you survive that turn, i think the road is paved towards your victory. let me know what you guys think?
16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 08, 2008, 10:58:15 pm
congrats on the top 4, i have been testing bomberman for a while and was wondering if splashing black is worth it just for duress, also duress doesent do what mana drain does, they are both disruption however drain lets you combo off very quickly in some key matchups. alot of the time mana drain doesent even seem like disruption its a business spell! either way congrats man this deck is seriously underrated!
17  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Ongoing Vintage Worlds Results on: August 07, 2008, 07:57:52 pm
how can people think strategic planning needs to be banned? whenever innovation happens and people dont know about it, those innovations tend to do well. this happened with tyrant oath. the first week the deck was out it won every tourney. after a month it died in popularity, why? becxause what makes vintage great is every decks ability to adapt. strategic planning was a great innovation, and i commend meandeck for finding it, is it broken? no! this is the problem with some people in the vintage community, and the people who control the vintage restrictions, when someone sees something work in this format they cry out for restrictions! Let it go people, if you are concerned about slaver run pithing needle, tormods crypt,or just play Long.
With that said congrats to all of top 8! I was unable to attend due to some personal troubles however the top 8 was a good thing to happen to this format. I think it is finally safe to say we have a defined meta, and from there we are able to meta-deck. I am happy to see the way vintage is shaping out to be this is going to be a great year of vintage!!
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Is Xerox viable? on: August 03, 2008, 07:14:17 pm
Hello guys being a bomberman player i have been brainstorming possible drain deck options. I know the loss of brainstorm would seem like this deck isn't viable however alot of decks have been getting by just fine via 1x brainstorm 1x ponder and 2x senseis top etc. this is the shell i have been thinking of

1x brainstorm
1x ponder
1x senseis top
4x Accumulated Knowlage
2x intuition
4x TFK
3x Izzet Guildmage

this is what i have so far let me know what you think guys and any other thoughts.
19  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 03, 2008, 12:02:54 am
I don't play this deck but what i imagine will get said is that they serve different purposes. I feel Mana leak is meant completely for slowing your opponent down in the early game. Negate on the other hand can slow someone down early game but doesn't stop first turn bob or Tarmogoyf, even though it can be played later in the game. Being the format that it is right now though, Mana Leak is great because combo is so rampant and so Mana Leak is good for most of the game and is able to counter bob where negate cant

Mostly true the thing about mana leak, or negate is no one sees them commin, when you have 1 blue source and 2 other you opponent will expect thirst for knowlage or AK no one sees mana leak (or negate) coming, mana leak is better than negate in the fact that it also stops bob or trinket mage, or even painter, i think they are both good in the sense that they have an uncanny suprise factor however in my opinion there has never been a better counter that costs 1U in the game. so staying with mana leak is probably a safe bet!

Hey man hows it going first and foremost i am pleased to have another bomberman player on board for discussion! how is the black working for you? right now i am currently running a u/w build and i like it alot. freeing up the one color gives me library which is huge in any control match, i cannot count how many times i buried control slaver with card advantage due to library. not only that but it lets me focus on the task at hand i.e. if i need to race a combo deck like Long or Ichorid. granted Trinket mage can handle Ichorid just by itself however there seems to be a ressurgence in long and i think you me and anusien need to figure out how we can optimize this match up. let me know your oppinions thanks!

26  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: painter combo against salvagers: a tale of bomberman! on: July 25, 2008, 01:43:17 am
Sort of, but not really.  The first problem is that I think you actually can set up the Salvagers combo faster, by virtue of the "What does the first Trinket Mage get" discussion.  The other thing is that Salvagers + Lotus is functionally a two card combo.  You have 1 Brainstorm 1 Ponder 4 Trinket Mage 1 Ancestral 1 Tinker 1 Merchant Scroll 4 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Sensei's Divining Top 1 Aether Spellbomb 1 Engineered Explosives (comboes with Top to draw your deck); about 1/4 of your deck will find you other cards.  I don't think I've ever had a problem in testing or tournament matches where I put Salvagers + Lotus together and didn't win.  Generally my first Trinket gets Lotus and my second gets either EE or Top, meaning that most any draw will get you there.

Completely true, you don't always need to win right away with slavagers alot of the time salvagers plus lotus gets you there with any other card in the deck, not to mention salvagers is a little stronger vs bounce. if you try to grind you opponent and they bounce the servant they will usually mill two cards and kill you on their next turn, if they bounce salvagers you may just replay it and go infinite again. another problem i have with the painter combo is that painter by himself is alot worse than salvagers by himself. I can not count how many times i have just gotten their by recurring good artifacts, or swinging with giant spider. I think the painter combo already has its deck and it doesent need bombermans shell, in fact it is worse with that shell.
