1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Scholar's Weekly Vintage Results Thread on: February 04, 2010, 02:33:04 pm
1 sol ring
1 mana crypt
5 mox
1 lotus

2 forest
1 island
4 trop
2 uground
1 bayou
3 delta
3 rainforest

(24) mana

4 thoughtseize
4 force of will
3 witness
3 goyf
2 negate
1 vendilion clique
1 thada adel
1 e. truth
1 compulsive research
(20)

1 ancestral
1 brainstorm
1 time walk
1 merchant scroll

1 fact
1 gifts
1 thirst
1 tinker

1 robot (sundering titan for that tourney)
1 vamp
1 demonic
1 yawg

1 mystical
1 time vault
1 voltaic key
1 yawgmoth's will

1 regrowth
(15 restricted cards)

SB:
4 Thorn of amethyst
2 Seal of primordium
2 Yormod's crypt
2 Sower of Temptation
1 Nature's claim
1 Oxidize (probably wants to be a second Claim)
1 Tarmogoyf
1 Negate
1 Extirpate

Some immediate thoughts I had on the list in general:

Don't the final MD card (ponder?).  Originally I ran 2 e. truths, since pitching it to Force always felt terrible.  Thada/Clique were terrible in this.  I mulled a lot, so you probably want to add a land or two (cut the 2 bad creatures to start).  Spell Pierce can easily replace Negate in the MD; Negate is run because Force is -1 card, Seize doesn't stop topdecks and you can't support an early Drain due to ggub requirements early on. Intuition/AK felt too slow to start up; Intuition/DA is probably too much lifeloss with Seize and regrowths. BoParadise, while they can improve mana denial matchups, are just not really worth it.  Oh, and FoF is a bit weak too.  4 goyf was too many, you never really want the second one.

UG is tempting (you could run Drain in that build), but I feel like another land or two would generally solve the occasional issues I run into against denial, and black is just so good with vault/key.  I really hate this many artifacts with only 1 thirst.  One thing I have to watch out for playing this is just drawing too many cards instead of actually winning.

If combo isn't a thing, you can cut thorns.  2 Duress in the board is fine for combo/control to complement Seizes. Extirpate is kinda useless too, there are always better cards.

I didn't have time to formulate an appropriate SB plan for matchups, so I just remembered what I ran a few months ago and splashed in 'good' cards. I'll probably have a much more refined list for next Monday. Long post!  Rolling Eyes

I consider it a positive thing that I didn't try out Birds again... seeing 4 in the list I played out in Cali makes me cringe a little.

Every time I try to play T1 again I miss something.  This tournament was me missing the memo on Spell Pierce.

As for witness, the card is just broken.  Needs to be restricted!

SEX does not want Thada or Vendilion.  This was just a test run!

My (Patrick/3rd place's) list is similar to what its been for a long time.  GUb running witnesses, goyfs, timevault and a bunch of other generic stuff.  The list I used to t8 in Cali is a little further down (Superstars Jan $1k); I've updated the deck to cut birds and run on Thirst / Gifts instead of Intuition / AK but the concept is the same.  It puts the fear of "basic forest" in people very well.

I'll be showing up this week, so that's +1 to your normal attendance  Very Happy  College break and all, though I don't have any real Cali tech to bring back.

Didn't realize how many pics you took when I was getting ruined by TPS...

If anyone's curious, my list was

2 Intuition
4 Accumulated Knowledge
4 Force of Will
4 Thoughtseize
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Birds of Paradise
3 Eternal Witness
1 Regrowth
2 Echoing Truth

1 Gifts Ungiven
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Time Vault
1 Voltaic Key
5 moxes

4 Tropical Island
3 Polluted Delta
2 Windswept Heath
1 Wooded Foothills
2 Underground Sea
2 Forest
1 Island
1 Bayou

SB:

4 Thorn of Amethyst
2 Duress
2 Seal of Primordium
2 Deglamer
2 Negate
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Darkblast

Its undergoing a slow evolution into Tezzeret, which I feel for most purposes is probably just a better deck in all honesty.  Card availability out here for me is the major reason I can't make the full transition though (me and leaving most of my cards back home in New England).

Fyi, my list (7th place) was inspired by the old Sex.dec from way back when.

Last two weeks were fun playing in this, too bad I'm going to be out in CA for a couple months for my senior project.  I suppose I finally know what people mean about T1 when they say they can play (mostly) the same deck after leaving for a couple months and still do well.  Its also nice to see people again.

Hope its still running in March!

I draw another Jailer and play Petal into Brainstorm. I don’t find my first land so I go Lotus, Crypt, Jailer, Jailer, Top, go. I have two Jailers so he has to find two solutions before I find my first land with Top to open up Extirpate

After seeing this a couple times and thinking on it, I can't help but wonder if you might have won or stalled longer if you had gone lotus/crypt into Jailer, Jailer, Top followed by Petal (not casting BStorm here).  You already have Top in play to brainstorm for you off Crypt (once before draw, once after) and this way you are still able to cast Extirpate.  I can understand the logic of casting Brainstorm here, but with Top in play and limited colored mana it seems as though extirpate is the stronger option.

I'm curious on how to improve the combo match, ie the various Long-style decks.  Is chalice generally considered enough (set to 1 I assume)?  Is glowrider good enough as well? (Though it does shut down your own combo).  Also, why not extra Crypts vs Ichorid? I assume this is due to them running Chalice?  I realize its recurrable with Salvagers, but if you Mage the first crypt do you find you have time to set the recursion combo up?
