1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Superstars Mox Emerald Results! Lists! Pics! on: October 20, 2010, 03:39:09 pm
The MODO PTQ kept me and probably some others from showing up.

I didn't realize the third Sunday was so early in the month this time.  I'm attending GP Minneapolis so I'll have to skip this one.  I'm hoping for a good turnout though, as I'd like Mox tournaments to continue...

I played this in a recent tournament and had trouble with Tezzeret when they had a Confidant and I didn't (or mine was killed with Fire).  What's the proper strategy in this situation?

I'm guessing the missing cards are Time Vault from Brett's list and Time Walk from Lin Hua's list.

The top-8 lists aren't in their usual spot, but I found them here.
7  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Eudemonia Mox Ruby Results! on: November 03, 2009, 03:08:37 am
I played Confidant Control:

Creatures (8)
4 Dark Confidant
3 Tarmogoyf
1 Inkwell Leviathan

Other Spells (34)
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
4 Force Of Will
1 Gush
1 Hurkyl's Recall
2 Mana Drain
1 Misdirection
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
4 Duress
1 Darkblast
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Ponder
1 Regrowth
4 Sleight Of Hand
3 Thoughtseize
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker
1 Yawgmoth's Will
2 Sensei's Divining Top

Mana (18)
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Island
3 Flooded Strand
4 Polluted Delta
2 Tropical Island
4 Underground Sea

Sideboard:
4 Leyline Of The Void
1 Ravenous Trap
3 Bitterblossom
1 Darkblast
1 Echoing Truth
1 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Rebuild
1 Island
1 Swamp
1 Tropical Island

I took the list from Menendian's article, swapped an Imperial Seal for a Darkblast and tried a different sideboard.

Rd. 1: bye
Rd. 2 vs. Stax: draw.  I was in a losing position at the end, but was playing for a draw at that point since there was no way I could win in time.  If I'd played for a win, I might have been able to pull it out with more time by bouncing Smokestack and countering it.
Rd. 3 vs. Dredge: won in 3 games, when he decked himself in game 2, and I had Leyline backed up by Forces and Drains in game 3.
Rd. 4 vs. Tezzeret: lost to Bob.
Rd. 5 vs. Tezzeret: won with Bob.
QF vs. Tezzeret: lost to Bob.

Probably not playing this deck again...

Have you considered Bitterblossom in the sideboard for the Fish and Workshop matchups?

Did the entire top 8 get paid out this time? I'm not wild about 5-8 not getting at least $25 store credit, which is about 1/3 of the reason I didn't go (the other 2/3 being that I didn't want to drive to Berkley all by myself).

With only 18 people, giving prizes to the whole top-8 is a bit much.  I'd rather a tournament give out a piece of power for 1st and less for the rest than to distribute them to nearly half the entrants.

On that note, there's supposed to be a Vintage event at Superstars this coming Sunday, where it's been said they'll start giving out a Mox for first in an effort to increase attendance (but they'll stop if attendance continues to be poor).  Except the event's not listed on the Superstars calendar, nor has the thread in the Announcement forum been bumped up, nor have I seen any flier in the store about it, nor have I received any other notice that the tournament exists.  And to top it off, this one happens to be the same weekend as PT Austin.  I love the idea of playing for a piece of power, but advertising really has to get better to keep these up.

Phil- Did anyone counter your Crop Rotations on the day? I went down to 1 in my version because I was getting WRECKED in testing if they got countered. I also unwisely excluded Tarmogoyf simply because I didn't want to proxy them. Grrr... What's funny is that you included a lot of tech I thought about but excluded because I didn't test them (Crucible, Consultation and Bitterblossom). That's probably why you went T8 and I went 2-3.  Very Happy

What do you think of a sigleton Dryad Arbor for the Bob Tez match?

The Crop Rotations never got countered, and I had enough Duress effects to see their hand.  A bigger problem was just drawing too many Rotations when they wouldn't do anything relevant.  I ran out of gas more often than I'd like, and the deck needed more card draw (in hindsight, Ancestral would have maybe been a better splash than Ancient Grudge, heh).

I'm ambivalent on the Crucible... I never played it, and there was never a time I wanted to tutor for it, but it doesn't seem bad on paper.

I'm not sure when I would want Dryad Arbor.  The Forest was actually pretty bad sometimes and should maybe just be a second Swamp.  I have the singleton Mishra's Factory if I need a creature.

Shouldn't P. Yam's decklist be a Dark Depths/Hexmage combo deck rather than "BUG" Fish as listed?

Yep, no blue in there.  The list should have 4 Vampire Hexmages... there are only 59 cards listed.

12  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Report/Results] Superstars March 1K Vintage Tourney (3-22-09) on: March 23, 2009, 08:30:54 pm
I wasn't able to make it to this tournament due to other plans, but in general I prefer Sundays for the $1k Vintage events and expect to attend most of them (though would probably still make it if they happened on Saturdays).

I've only been attending the occasional weekly Vintage event nowadays, but Thursdays are still the best weekday for me.  If a later starting time is possible, that would be preferable, as traffic is not quick on 101 when trying to get there by 7.  The commute ends up being especially long for an event that's not guaranteed to have enough people to run.  I'd make it a lot more often if it started at 7:30 or 8, especially if there are regularly enough people.

Superstars finally put the top-8 decklists up on their site: http://www.superstarsgamecenter.com/?p=799.
