Sup again,
I was hoping that the negative talk was over when I posted last night. I feel that now I must address the subject of the misplay by John and Urweak. I wish Urweak would have asked me about the ruling at the tournament. I would have gladly explained the reasoning behind the ruling and maybe avoided these hostile feelings about John.
I had a similiar experience with this exact situation when I was playing in a PTQ top eight against Nick Eisel with Mike Guptil (respected high level judge) seated next to us judging. Nick played a free Submerge on my creature during my turn. It was illegal because he did not have an Island in play. I went from ahead to being being behind, eventually losing a close race in game three. Mike noticed the error on my next turn, as Nick still had no Island in play. Nothing we could do, but play on with a warning. It did cross my mind that Nick, a Pro also, must have known what he was doing. Afterward, I was disgusted with myself for not reading that card, and I believe it was 100% my fault. Nick and I talked about that PTQ recently, and he still regrets the mistake. From then on, I always reread every card at competitive events, even if I thought I knew what the card did, a valuable lesson learned.
I have been a DCI judge and TO for fifteen years, allong the way judging at PTQ's and Pro Tours for WotC. I also earned 24 Pro Points when I was focused on playing Magic. I have seen this same error made over on thousand times. It is always a warning, even at the Pro Tour level, this infraction is a warning to both players. It is an error made in public view with both players failing to read the card. All players playing in competitive events are responsible for playing correctly no matter how stressful the situation. Someone mentioned the fact that players could just let people make mistakes and report them to judges to earn game wins if this was not the rule. Imagine how many times this would come up in each tournament if both players were not responsible for maintaining game state.
Urweak, I ask you to think about the reasoning behind this rule, and take some responsibility for what happened. I see you are angry, but I bet you will never make this error again in a tournament. You will always check the card from here on. I also ask that you stop calling John a cheater. I truely believe that it was just an error on John's part. John has played in at least thirty touranments at my store, and he has never gotten a warning or been suspected of cheating. In fact, I have had players tell me that John and his girlfriend, Maura, are nice people to play against. His DCI ban was a few years ago for offering partial prizes to his opponent in exchange for a win at a PTQ. Many people do not realize that this type of bribe is a major penalty.
It is amazing how such a small error can have a major effect and turn into a major problem. I hope all involved can go on from here with no hard feelings.

Sup,
I wanted to thank all of the vintage players for their kind words on the boards and at my store. You make me feel good about running events, because sometimes it can feel like a thankless job. This tournament was smaller than what we usually get, but it had a nice and relaxed vibe to it. The tournament was not short on competition though. I saw alot of creativity and interesting play. The last finals match was indeed crazy as Nam declared that he had no outs to his own Mana Crypt, though it still took forever for that Crypt to finish him off. You had to see it to believe it. I did take a loss on the guaranteed prize support this time, but I still will offer gauranteed prizes next time. Back when I was a player, I did not want to drive for hours when the prizes were not gauranteed. I want the vintage players to know that my tournaments will always be worth the trip. I will always offer the best authentic Magic cards possible.
Some asked for a meta breakdown so here it is:
4 Drain - Some with Tez and some without Tez 5 Combo - Belcher, Ad Naus, TPS, Elf, Dream Halls 2 Workshop 4 Aggro - Fish, Zoo, Tarm 3 Bazaar 2 Oath 2 Standstill
An interesting stat was that there were eight decks that contained Mana Drain in the tourney and five of them made the top eight.
More props to the players for keeping the store so clean, there wasn't a bit of garbage lying around after the tourney. I appreciate that respectfulness. Props again to Brain Keil for helping me organize these events.

I had a great time hosting this event. The tournament was exciting, and we had a very friendly group of players. I am looking forward to hosting more or these events. My special thanks goes to Brian for helping me to organize this event, and to Josh for helping out with judge questions.
I wanted to also tell Dan that someone did turn in a deck that was left downstairs at the end of the night. I just put it on my desk without looking at it, but I believe it was a Dragon Shield box. Sorry that I can't remember who turned this deck in, but this was another example of the kindness that was displayed during this event. Give me a call on Tuesday after 2pm at the store to verify if it is your deck. 412-828-1701
