1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Tolarian Academy rebuild for current Type 1 on: January 07, 2009, 10:42:38 pm
I played Academy when it was a viable deck. I took your word for it and built the deck you proposed in your first post. My goldfishes (which are delicious) were no where near turn 2 or even turn 3.

It is horrible. The deck would never survive the first 2 rounds of a tournament never mind getting to the later rounds. Tolarian is meant to be used in newer combo decks that utilize storm and all of the best 0cc artifacts like all 5 moxen, not just 2 of the 5.

Not sure if you are new to vintage or not but I hope you show up to a tournament where I am at and I get to play against this pile of jank.

I have no constructive criticism other than that you need to look at other combo decks that are being played right now and build one of those.

Kudos for trying to bring the "old school" (hahahaha or should I say academy) back but you should stop waisting your time.

Good luck.

Rich was one of my losses for the day. Game one he smoked me with the combo generating 16 elves in a turn i think. He grapeshot me which was stifled then beat my face in next turn. Game two I was not quite sure what to do so I went the mana denial route since that is what seemed to be the only way I could slow him down. That still did not work as he was able to get enough elves over time to over run me again.

Good job Rich!

This might not be impressive to all.........

I have not played vintage MTG in about 5 years. I decided to get back in and BUG Fish was my deck choice. I went to a local tournament and managed to pull out a top 8 out of 18 players. My inexperience in Vintage was noticeable in top 8 when I did not counter a scroll rack against Oath. This horrible decision lost me game three and kept me from top 4.

My other losses of the day came to Elf combo and another Fish deck (BUGw i think). I can not say enough about how much fun this deck is to play and how much power it has. I think the only change I would make would be to cut the Mox Ruby for something else, not sure what. I encourage anyone that has not tried this deck to sleeve it up and play some games.

If anyone has any questions about my games or my deck list feel free to ask.

Thanks! I will try to remember.

I placed 8th in the tourney with BUG Fish. It was the first time I had played Vintage in about 5 years and I am really happy to be playing in this format again. My losses for the day came to:

Elf Combo
BUGw Fish (sweet deck Arik)

and in the top 8 Oath. I lost because I did not counter his scroll rack which would have lead to him decking himself in 3-4 turns. Lesson learned.......

As for the prize structure I think it went:

Top eight played. 5-8 broke even.

Top 4 split and 3x'ed their entrance fee.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
