I'll try to make it as well. Good to see vintage coming back to Eudo... *cough* still owe us a lotus tournament *cough*
3  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm Moving -- From Ohio to the Bay (California) on: March 05, 2012, 12:47:07 pm
Well, well, well, just when I was considering dumping all my vintage cards. If you can somehow cast Animate Dead on the vintage scene around here that would be awesome. There are a few of us in SF (anywhere between 2-5) that would still play in events, as well as others from around the Bay Area.

Vintage in the Bay Area-
Superstars- The channelfireball higher ups stopped coming, this led to their many followers also not coming. Attendance went from 30 to 20 to 10. When there was only 10 people coming, and you knew exactly what everyone was playing it made it not fun or worth the time to spend an entire weekend day traveling and playing 3 rounds. In their defense, Superstars held them for longer than they should have, considering how unprofitable they were. These haven't fired in 6 months or more.

Eudomonia- They used to run a power 9 series; we got through the 5 moxes in 2009?!! (holy crap that was a long time ago); they gave away free entry to the lotus tournament to people who got 2nd place in the mox tournaments...then never had a lotus tournament. Pretty shitty. Not sure why they stopped, there were some scheduling conflicts, but they never rescheduled.

Anyway, those are the two main vintage stores, both of which now have zero. Hopefully your name will spark some interest in the format around here.

Glad to see this happened. Sorry for the lack of support from SF, just wasn't possibility for me this weekend. Hopefully this helps build some more local interest in the format.
5  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: [Announcement/Schedule] Vintage/Legacy Tournaments at Superstars in San Jose, CA on: October 03, 2011, 01:26:38 pm
Hey guys,
Because of poor attendance recently (we had ... three people in September?) we're going to skip October and have Vintage again in November.  See you then!

You guys should sponsor a mox event at worlds

+1

Also, Oct 16th is the weekend of GP San Diego, yes? A rescedule is probably a good idea. Nov 20 is the weekend before Thanksgiving, so hopefully it will work out for everybody.

Nov 20th is the weekend of the world championships.

Up to 12 buxish now on SCG.  Gaining 2 dollars an hour at this rate, will probably settle at 10 - 15.

It's a Rare in the first set of a block that will be drafted a lot. This card is probably OK in standard, not SFM good. It will see some play in vintage probably a 2 of in some decks. And will see some play in other formats as well. This card will NOT be $15 in 3 months. Probably $7. If you want to get some for value, get foils.

Great to see a mox up again Eric! I will be in vegas this weekend, but everyone else show up!
9  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Worlds 2011 San Francisco on: August 06, 2011, 10:54:56 am
I  think worlds will be the last pro tour that still has all the side events going on. So, yep you can go and there will be fun things to do, but the public events probably won't be announced for a couple months.
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: tournaments on Cockatrice on: August 02, 2011, 07:25:25 pm
I think the source is organizing a legacy version, not sure how it has worked out or if it has even happened yet. But I'd be down for a vintage tournament on cockatrice

Ah man! Saw you posted in this and thought there was going to be good news. Pull some weight and get us that Lotus tournament, west coast vintage could use a high profile tournament to jump start things
12  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: [Deck Discussion] Fatestitcher Dredge on: July 22, 2011, 03:03:22 pm
Matt congrats on your solid performance yesterday and sorry to had take off before the top 8.

Would you mind going through your sideboard plan for blue and artifact decks, what cards come out for each deck and perhaps sideboard strategies if on the play or draw?

My plan against your average Drain deck, especially one with Time Vault, was something like this:

-2 Dread Return, -3 Sun Titan, -3 Fatestitcher, -1 LED, -1 Mox Sapphire, -1 Lotus Petal, -1 Black Lotus, -1 Golgari Thug

+2 Darkblast, +1 City of Brass, +4 Nature's Claim, +4 Chain of Vapor, +2 Ancient Grudge

Against Paul Mastriano, I knew his deck was packed with 4x Jailer (or the previous versions were), so I sided differently:

+2 Darkblast, +1 City of Brass, +2 Ancient Grudge, +4 Chain of Vapor, +2 Firestorm

-2 Dread Return, -3 Sun Titan, -1 Fatestitcher, -1 LED, -1 Mox Sapphire, -1 Lotus Petal, -1 Black Lotus, -1 Golgari Thug

I didn't really do any testing pre-event, so I'm not sure whether it is better to side out 1 Ancestral Recall or 1 Golgari Thug.

Wow, that's a lot of cards. I've found bringing in 6 cards for game 2 seems about right. Usually 4 Chain 2 Claim. Then for game 3 siding appropriate for the hate. But I really dislike watering down the deck with all the sb cards. Usually you only need to answer 1 piece of hate, and keeping in fatestitchers allows you a turn in which they can't recover from. Glad to see you're keeping at least 1 dread return in for each matchup, that's a mistake I think a lot of people make is to side out all of them.

July's event:

10 Proxy Vintage for Dual Lands
Sun, July 17, 12pm – 7pm

It will be similar to June's event.

Is the CF crew going to be there?
16  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [Free Article] New Phyrexia in Vintage Dredge on: June 24, 2011, 10:17:58 am
I went undefeated in a small tournament last weekend playing 4x Gitaxian probe. It took the spot of disruption in the list (leyline, chalice, or unmask). It was pretty good all day, similarly to those other cards, it's only good in your opener. I would compare it most to unmask, but instead of slowing your opponent down a half a turn it speeds you up a half a turn. A few times I tapped bazaar then used probe to see their hand and dredge grave troll into narco and cabal therapy which was pretty sweet on turn 1. It's definitely playable, but not sure correct.

Sad Father's day, yes?

My parent now live 40 miles from me (not 800 like last year).

I could really use 2 Trops or infy store credit.

The previous post DOES say, SATURDAY, not Sunday.

Whoops, copy / pasted from c. fireball email. I'm assuming it's sunday

20  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Why doesn't Workshop with Metalworker sideboard Kozilek? on: June 06, 2011, 06:53:20 pm
You don't always have metalworker, workshops can't cast Eldrazi, and with spheres, well, you get it.

For me it goes Mox > Duals > Library.  How many would it take to make a lotus tournament worthwhile? 40ish?

Thanks for posting the lists Eric, it was good to play some vintage again. I was the dredge player. My plan was to have a good game against shop decks so I wanted a lot of lands and a lot of Bloodghasts / Ichorids. This worked pretty well as I played against Workshops twice.

@Metman I activated a Coliseum one time and it won me the game. I mostly just wanted a lot of lands and figured I would play some that were good when they weren't paying for sphere effects.

Good to see everyone!

I don't doubt that activating it won you games.  I was curious how often it came into play and didn't do anything because you couldn't find another source to activate it.

One time I wanted to cast a bloodghast and had a gemstone mine and a coliseum. My oppenent had 2 leyline of the void in play and I had mulliganed to 2 without a bazaar. So that game wasn't going well anyway. But that was the only time I wanted to be a city of brass.

27  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Surgical Extraction on: April 14, 2011, 10:33:22 am
Gambit the issue with comparing it to extirpate is that extirpate costs 1 mana, this costs 2 life.

The reason that is relevent is this can be cast on T0, which can turn the tide against what could otherwise be a devastating t0 for ichorid, or its another strong piece of hate to bring in against the t1 storm decks (which there are a few around in my meta)

I get the difference, but I don't think this card will see heavy play, but will see some sideboard play. It is just another piece of graveyard hate. In your situation, rav. trap would likely be just as good, and that card seems to have fallen mostly out of favor. Yes, any color can play it, etc etc. It's not that the card is bad at what it does. It's that this type of effect isn't as good as people convince themselves, these effects are always looked at from the best possible situation and people seem to forget that this cost you a card, and that you may draw more of these (no it's not that good to hit multiple targets, especially in vintage with so many powerful 1 ofs)
28  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Surgical Extraction on: April 13, 2011, 11:18:17 am
The card is fine at what it does, but extirpate was rarely seeing play. People are talking like this a a new effect, we've essentially had this card for years. It will see some sideboard play after initial release, then it will slowly go to fewer and fewer copies.
29  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: [Announcement/Schedule] Vintage/Legacy Tournaments at Superstars in San Jose, CA on: April 03, 2011, 08:31:27 pm

Sweet, except prize support was cut in half  Confused
I guess with the low turnouts that it was bound to happen

The prize support isn't cut in half except for when the minimum number of people enter. Giving away a LoA allows the store to free up more prizes from first place and distrubute them elsewhere. For example, in a sixteen man tournament a mox will eat up nearly all of the entry costs and make additional prizes beyond it kept to a minimum. In the case of a LoA, first place only eats up roughly eight entries which lets the store distribute an extra two-hundred amongst the t4/t8.

That sounds fine, but I'm wary about how it will actually turn out. Lately we haven't had 16 people, and without the draw of a guaranteed MOX I wouldn't be surprised to see less attendance. We'll see, and I'll try to make next weekend.
