Hi, great article, just have a question about it. I don't think this is possible, this is game 1: After gush & null rod. GAT is mana tide:

Turn 5:

Fish's upkeep: use Grunt on my Echoing Truth and Jotun Grunt.

Drawing Mox Jet. Dead draw.

Attack with Grunt. GAT goes to 12 life.

Wasteland the Tropical Island.

Pass.

GAT draws Brainstorm.

GAT plays Trop #2 and casts another Dryad. Attack with Dryad, sending Fish to 11.

Your one mana short.

Nice to see you guys play vintage with my deck Smile

It really rocks SmileSmileSmile of the 4 tournaments I brought the deck to, I won/split in finals like three. It's really rewarding if you play it well, that's what I like most of it. Maybe I should write a article about it, drain combo has risen in holland, everybody is playing it and doing well with it. To bad I have no time to develop more vintage decks due school and playing other big tournaments Wink

Congratz on your win, I didn't even know that there was an eindhoven tournament...  Sad but I hadn't got time today so it doesn't matter much.

Nice to see Tom play vintage once again, which version of drain TPS did he play?

I don't know it for sure, they first need to have a judge for the tournament, then they will make a final decision with him on the rule enforcement level. When I know more, I will post it here.

Yes tormod's crypt IS underplayed, you can see three different people saw that. We all played decks that have a hard time handling the crypt, but the advantage of top 8, is that you can lose a random match to the crypt, and still top 8.

Btb, steffen was at the easy site of the top 8, with a fish, and a control slaver on his way to the finals.... but he played well, and didn't lose, so congratz to him.

My match against barrie was really silly, game 1, I therapy him on oath, he got a hand of 3 wastelands, 2 fetch, island, + platinum angel! Who keeps that?? Then he goes, topdeck brainstorm,  brainstorm into goody's, fetch, win the game from there bleh...

Game 3, I go therapy on oath, he goes topdeck oath...

15  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results]Open Dutch Vintage Championships on: November 01, 2005, 10:34:01 am
The machups
R1 dragon 2-0-1 3 points
R2 mono green beatz 2-0 6 points
R3 control slaver 9 points
R4 control slaver 12 points
R5 ravager (hero) 15 points
R6 control slaver (markus) 1-1 16 points (game 3 I had a change of 1/2 of killing him in the fifht turn, needed to oath up razia, but it was my woodripper...)
R7 stax 2-0 19 points
R8 TPoath ID 20 points

T8 ubas stax 2-1
Lost game 2 due to not drawing my third land for 5-6 turns on a row....
Won game 3 due to topdeck flux, but oath would have been nice to. Didn't see much speed from my deck, but he was drawing power + bazaar each game...

T4 stefan with oath
Stefan  is a teammember, he last minute wanted to play my list, only differents are waste #4 and null rod #2, against 2 impulse. And he plays 61, a extra drain.

I won because I abused his oath, and won the orchard war, G2 I won because I drew thirst into thirst into thirst into thirst, and the all resloved Smile

T2 steffen (dr evil)
Lost game 1, he started with, recall, I fow, he fow. I didnt have a mox, but my hand contained null rod land, orchard, waste, he played gifts next turn, for mana artifacts had will in hand, drew his time walk, en comboed me out next turn with flame vault....

Game 2, he mulls twice, I cast oath without orchard turn 3, with UU backup, he responds with gifts, I play shadow of doupt Razz

Game 3
I mull into: orchard,mox,sea,duress,leak,oath
He starts with, mox u, fetch. My draw gives me a FOW. I play land mox go, he brainstorms + fetched, in his turn he casts gifts, I leak he fowed, okay resolve, he fetches, tinker broken cards. My turn, draw thirst, I duress his will away, drop orcard + oath, go, he plays his scrying, taking him beneath 18 Smile sweet. My turn, I oath up akroma. Next turn he can't win, so I'm the dutch champion!

Why did I wanna play oath? That's because it had a good matchup against random decks, which I expected a lot, I only needed to improve the less good matchups. I used to play 4cc, and I was always in love with mana disruption, so I want 5 waste. I couldn't play shaman like in 4cc, and null rod works well with muddle. I only had to figure out correct numbers. Before muddle, we already had created oath with null rods. Joram de Kraker played it in Den haag a while ago and top 8 in that tournament. Then we felt like that's what was missing in oath.

Null rod is just so brutal against gifts and control slaver, and TPS and stax. Most games I played it, I won the game.

Null rod won me several games against control slaver. Your opponent won't be able to hardcast his artifacts and weld them back in.
Transmute is really good, you can fetch, time walk, oath, demonic, null rod. All cards that can win games.
It's a counter against gifts, cause you don't want to transmute it early because of the sorcery speed + uu1
It's never dead, only against shop but you can still transmute or pitch it to fow.

Mana drian was always bad in oath, so it wasn't that hard to cut those.
16  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results]Open Dutch Vintage Championships on: November 01, 2005, 03:27:51 am
So I won the lotus! My team put up a wonderfull prestation, placing two of our three members in top 8, stefan and me. Joram played stax, and didn't had any luck today. Our oath deck worked really well. Stefan and my record in swiss was like 6-0-2, I won the top 8, stefan lost to me in the semifinals, and then won the battle for the loa.

So our deck had like:
3 ID
1 draw due to bad luck, needed extra turn, or needed to oath up razia instead of woodripper.
17 wins
1 loss because we had to play in against eachother in the semi's....

Blue Elemental Blast says "destroy target red permanent or counter target red spell" while Hydroblast says "destroy target permanent if it is red or counter target spell if it's red", meaning it can target a nonred permanent or spell if you need to, just to dump it out of your hand. I think this was mostly useful when people played Black Vise, but I guess it's still something to keep in mind.

You can use a hydroblast to raise the storm count, and you can't use a BeB for that.

I played this deck at the same event as Koen, and I played the frantic search, it won me a few games, my sideboard was really bad, and the luck wasnt at my side. Game 3 against 4cc, I needed to mull to 5. Then I flipped myself to death with mana crypt, after flipping 3 times wrong, with the kill in hand... then I lost to hugo, because he just had a great hand game 1, and I needed to mull to 5 game 2.

Koen didn't need to mulligan as much as I did, I mulled in a 5 round tournament 7 or 8 times, while he just mulled in his first 5 round just once.

This decks is really good, and very fun to play, I didn't had much time to test, so I tested it just the night before, and then it worked just fine. No problems with mulligans at all.

One other point I want to make is that mana drain just sucks, I don't think it needs to be a 4-of. I really think an extra misdirrection is just better, 4 seems much, but a misdirrected ancestral won me 2 games. And it protected my gifts a lot.

I really liked the rebuild, I killed with tendrils like 4 times in the tournament, and a lot more times in practise. While koen and arthur just would use the tinker for the kill.

Q: I have Spawning Pit in play and the person I am playing has Oath of Druids. He uses Forbidden Orchard during his upkeep giving me a spirit token. Can I sacrifice the token to the Spawning Pit before he has the opportunity to activate Oath.

A: Oath of Druids does not have an activated ability, it has a triggered ability. If at the beginning of your opponent's upkeep he does not control fewer creatures than you the Oath will not trigger at all. In order for the Oath to trigger he would have to use the Orchard's ability at the end of your turn. Even if he did do this you could sacrifice this spirit to put a counter on the Pit before his upkeep begins. When Oath's triggered ability goes to resolve, it will see that the trigger condition isn't still true, and nothing will happen.

http://www.starcitygames.com/pages/judgefinder.php?keywords=oath+of+druids

So its a triggered ability, not activated, so the needle can't stop oath!

After team CAB spend some time on gifts, I was very interessed about the interaction of gifts and intuition + ak, so I spend some time on it, it's very fun to play, it can outdraw opp. very easy, and then just win with gifts.

21  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Report] TPS Top8 at Mox ruby tourney, just to become slaughtered by elves... on: June 22, 2005, 05:51:48 am
I actually won the tournament with TPS, with gifts and red for recoup

I went 4-0, and lost last round (opp. was 3-1, needed the win)

R1 Dragon
R2 UGW fish (orlove like, koen dekker)
R3 control slaver
R4 oath
R5 control slaver

The top 8
2 TPS
1 control slaver/titanslaver
1 elves
1 affinity
1 Mono black
1 stax
1 oath

Top 8 match against david martinez, with mono black
I lost game 1, after a mulligan which could lost to null rod, and it did, he had it turn 1, turn 2 would be ok, but not turn 1

I get quick necro and win

I get duressed he picked wrong card, and I punish him with, walk, tutor, ritual necro, and win with collosus

Top4 against stax, joram de kraker, teammate
I start with, lotus 2 mox, land, necro, and win next turn.
He starts of slow, at some point I play necro, and after that I could only tendrils him for 16, with tinker in hand, just needed to wait to topdeck a mox.

Top 2 against sjoerd, affinity
I win after turn 2 collosus with walk
I win after gifts voor rebuild, will, chain of vapor, hurkyls recall, i create massive storm with artifact mana and bounce, and win the mox with a tendrils for 26!

I took home the ruby, there were exactly 40 players, the top 8 was asks if they wanted the ruby and boosters, or some other card prizes, everbody prefered the ruby, thats why there was like no price support for the rest of the top 8.

why play 3 creatures over 2? Rorix adds nothing, It doesn't kill a Platz and it can't shoot creatures/destroy artifacts..

Now you can therapy your opp. after your attack phase...

I think its really good, you can stop welders with it, and bazaars.

What about the new blue fork? Its very nice against wills, you can abuse and then stop his will.
