However, to use that disruption Turn 1 you have to both fight through Misstep and it slows down your explosiveness (the only way to get a Turn 2 TKS off a Turn 1 discard spell is exactly Urborg + Eye, or the few pieces of fast artifact mana available to you (Sol Ring/Crypt).
And Moxes? The Channel Fireball deck ran Simian Spirit Guide, so some colored mana isn't prohibitive.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: looking at your opponents deck while shuffling

How should this situation best be handled? I didn't want to call a judge at that point because a) it was just my impression that's what he was doing and b) its just my word vs his word
Get a judge over there and talk to him discretely. The only way "it was just my impression" plays in is that you don't want to start yelling "my opponent's a cheater." Talk to the judge away from the table and tell him your concerns. Yeah, there are two options, both involve DISCRETELY talking to the judge such that the judge can observe the player. One classic is to take a card from your deck, call a judge, and keep pointing at the card while telling the judge about the shuffling. But make it appear that you are asking a rules question about the card. The other is to talk to a judge after the round and let the judge observe his behavior on later rounds. This might not work well if he has already scouted the next round opponent.

Listening to the podcast, I think you put too much weight on the frequency that a card/deck makes the top eight and instead should consider the frequency that the card/deck takes in the event.
Chalice may be like Sensei's Divining Top, where there is an element of it being semi- 'powerful', but to a lot of players it is very 'unfun' to play against. And if that makes up a larger percentage of the lower tables, it can reduce retention among the newer players to the format.

Blow up the economy, butcher Vintage Dailies and now stop supporting VSL? The hits just keep on coming.
Season 1 wasn't supported by WotC, I don't see what support is needed. But I don't see why they wouldn't support it (unless they are 'making' their own standard and modern). It was indeed supported (in a very miniscule way), in that Randy convinced WotC to provide a set of Foil Power 9 on MTGO to the winner each season. Randy and Shotgun Lotus have basically done everything else themselves the rest of the time. I would like to think that the honor of winning the VSL is worth more than a foil set of power.

I played against Paul in an eight man vintage event at GP providence (2010?) and Paul had two different ways of resolving Preordain. If he had previously preordained, he would simply slide the scryed cards under the deck. If the bottom card was not known, he would pick the deck up very quickly and tilt the deck while putting the scryed cards in the bottom.
I only caught on to this pattern at the end of the third game and didn't push the issue with the judge staff.

The weekly nitpicks: Bob maher: He could've played chalice for two + hellkite a turn or two earlier then he did. And it would have won him the game. Can't remember if he had chalice for six here? If he did then this line is obviously not going to work.
G2 Tom vs. Randy: He could've vamped for timetwister, stripped the bazaar and then timetwistered, i like the bargain play a bit better though. I think it merits some thought as to playing mana crypt vs. not playing it. Also, he totally had the game once he drew another mox.
Chalice on 6 was in play. Timetwister was in Randy's board game one, did he side it in?

I'm super excited for this. Truly. This format is so much fun. I'm really glad we aren't going with the blog and leaving mana vault restricted. I hope I can win this one too and change the restricted list again Does the first place prize include being able to make a change to the B+R list? Because that would be awesome.

Unrestrict Vise and keep Strip Mine restricted and you really lessen its impact. You also don't draw on the play anymore and lessen the chance (~3%) of getting a turn one Vise. Your opponent can mulligan to 6 and all of a sudden you've cast shock. I think either Strip Mine or Vise could be a 4 of but maybe not both, people might get some feel bads from getting vised on the draw and the opponent stripping their first couple of lands. Strip Mine is really just wasteland in 93/94, it's a one for one that an aggressive deck whose curve is low (or who has accelerated out a threat) uses to keep the game from advancing a turn. The fact that it hits basics is almost irrelevant in 93/94. Why does anyone play the card basic island in 3+ color decks in vintage? Wasteland.
If you include Fallen Empires and unrestrict Hymn and Vise then you've got a decision to make, but again the push and pull of 4 x Strip and 4 x hymn might be too much. Getting a land hymned and your next one stripped is pretty brutal.
I like both Hymm and Strip Mine unrestricted as a balance to unrestricted Mana Drain control decks. Being able to sandbag a Strip Mine until your opponents taps down to just two blue is great. Especially when it means that you won't lose to their Library because you have more Strip Mines available. Black Vise was never a fun card, and should stay restricted so that more skill testing cards can be played. But that is my perspective, as others don't view Mana Drain as a fun card.

I don't believe for a minute that I would have let my own Sphere of Resistance resolve, even though I played into my own Chalice for 2, hoping Rich forgets that it will be countered anyways.
LotusHead, I think your play with the Sphere of resistance was cheating and should have resulted in a DQ. You intentionally did not announce the trigger and moved the game state to a point where you passed priority aware of the trigger trying to induce your opponent to make a mistake. Whether that mistake was allowing it to resolve through the Chalice or using a spell in hand to counter the Sphere is irrelevant. At all Rules Enforcement Levels: Just like before you are responsible for your own triggers. Intentionally skipping a mandatory trigger will get you kicked out of a tournament faster than you can say "cumulative upkeep." Regardless if you miss your own trigger raise your hand and call a judge.
