Alex,

Probably good you stayed home. I would have wrecked you anyway Very Happy

There were only 12 players. I split in the finals with a Jace/bob list.
2  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Extravaganza @ BLACK GOLD - Oct. 2nd on: September 13, 2011, 10:29:47 pm
So glad to see you're still supporting the local Vintage scene Carl!

I should be fully powered by then. Unfortunately, I have a wedding in the mountains that Saturday night. I will try my best to be back by morning and show up for this event!

This makes me sooooo happy.

Supression Field. I had pipe dreams about a white stax deck.

5  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Proxy Event - BLACK GOLD 3/20 on: March 14, 2011, 02:22:04 pm
Oh snap, I thought this was this past Sunday for some reason.

It's spring break, which means I'll likely be in another state. If I'm not present, someone else will have to beat up on Carl for me Very Happy
6  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Proxy Event - BLACK GOLD 3/20 on: March 08, 2011, 10:19:19 pm
As always, I will be there to support my favorite format (and the free money  Very Happy). The attendance has been low the past 2 events. Let's get that up!

I'll do my part:

I will DONATE ALL MY WINNINGS to Black Gold for the next tourney if we break 20 people. Come on folks. You know I'll win. That's an extra ~100 bucks for the next tournament. I know there's vintage lovers. SCG sold out on power when they were here for the GP. Time to sac up people!
7  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Unlimited Proxy Vintage for Cash in Boulder CO on: March 08, 2011, 10:15:46 pm
This is pretty sweet. Since all you Boulder bitches always skip out on Carl's, it'll be my pleasure to wreck your base.

Jimmy Jammerz. Hit me up son. We got some brewin' to do!
8  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: t2 Mono-Black Control with MBS on: February 02, 2011, 11:46:32 am
MBC can be a lot fun to play. Here are some suggestions:

22 lands is not enough. You play a bunch of mana intensive bombs. I'd go 25 lands minimum.

Exannguinate/decimator web are awful. They are too slow against the ramp decks and don't do anything against aggro.

I'd max out on Go for the Throat, before adding doom blade.

You need a finisher. Grave titan is the stones, but with GFtT, I'd say wurmcoil would be good as well.

Gatekeeper of malakir is also pretty good removal.

Finally, I'd get in a couple of liliana's for diabolic tutors.
9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: TO REPORT - Black Gold 1/16 on: January 24, 2011, 01:11:29 pm
1) We all decided on a split, Carl didn't "Win"

2) Why no mention of our EDH match afterwards, Carl?

Also, I was much more impressed at this tournament, as people were actually prepared to fight shops. Not that it mattered, as I still came out ahead. I played 4 matches against 3 decks with MD trygon (and 4 SB nature's claim) and an Oath deck.

Anyways, great event as always, and I'll be there in March.

I definitely look forward to it as well. Is there any way you can post a decklist as a teaser?
12  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Thopter Assembly on: December 29, 2010, 05:35:35 pm
Are you for real on the arcane denial? I gotta believe that mana leak or negate is just better.

Thopter Assembly looks okay. I think the best use for it may be against workshop decks. 5 permanents is no joke.
13  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Proxy Event - BLACK GOLD 1/16 on: December 23, 2010, 09:35:32 pm
All your Workshop are belong to us!

Wait, you're kidding right? My guess is that I continue crushing with shops. Denver's very own Alex Smith has issued a challenge at the last PTQ. So, the winners of the past 3 vintage tourneys will be in attendance. Looks to be a good time!

Also, Jeff, don't think I forgot our limited match. My dreams of crushing you with Myr battlesphere in Vintage will be realized!
14  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Proxy Event - BLACK GOLD 1/16 on: December 02, 2010, 09:55:12 pm
Fucking deal!!! Next level bets only. I have dreams of THE Pierce Olssen proposing to the cashier of Chick-fil-A.

Also, EDH games going on all day. Anyone who beats me heads up will win a Vintage playable (of value).

Let's kick off 2011 with a bang!
15  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Proxy Event - BLACK GOLD 1/16 on: December 01, 2010, 04:01:36 pm
For serious guys, is there any doubt that CC will take this down?

I mean, seriously, how has Colorado NOT figured out how to beat shops? I look forward to countless failed attempts to stop "turn 1 lodestone, turn 2 tangle wire."

Carl, Thanks in advance for the c-note I'm about to win.

As always, anyone who beats me will receive a special bonus. Props to Black Gold for supporting Vintage!

See you clowns there!
16  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: TO Report - BLACK GOLD 10/16 on: October 18, 2010, 01:24:34 pm
LOL Carl. I sense some hostility. Brad and I played 2 games for fun and I won easily. I offered a split so I could get out and see the girl. Maybe I should have played it out? Nothing makes me happier than dreamcrushing BlackGold!

Although, Marcus did beat me round 1 and win a wild evocation from me.

Also, no props for me? If I recall, I'm 2 for 2 since coming back  Wink

Again, thanks for hosting the tourney. Great times with great people. I too was disappointed by the small showing. I'd hate to see Vintage die in CO. Anyways, looking forward to the next one!

@Colin: It was good playing with you. You left before Jimmy had the chance to return your cities. I gave them to Carl, so he'll have them for you next time you stop by Black Gold.

17  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Vintage Proxy Event - BLACK GOLD 10/16 on: October 16, 2010, 01:59:12 am
BITCHES!!!!

This shit is tomorrow!!! PLEASE support you're local store. I will be giving out random rares for anyone who beats me (the defending champ of Carl's tourney...I hope this continues). Also, bring your EDH decks. Mad shenanigans is bound to happen.

Hope to see you tomorrow!!!

I'll be there reppin' Meandeck and the CC.

Jimmy and Trav: You fools comin? Or do I need to dreamcrush Team Warp and Black Gold all by my lonesome?
19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Rumors/Previews/mtg.com articles on: September 17, 2010, 04:22:17 pm
I'm guessing because Devourer puts a X/X counter on itself, while trisk's ability says remove a +1/+1 counter.
20  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: T.O. Report: BLACK GOLD DISASTER on: September 12, 2010, 10:39:21 am
Carl,

I love the tourneys you hold. However, it's simply unrealistic to run large sanctioned tourneys anymore. There's what, 10 people in all of Colorado who are fully powered? I don't think any nonpowered Vintage player wants to pay 20 to lose to those players. The fact that eternal ratings may matter (now that Legacy is picking up) just means more people are unwilling to play sanctioned Vintage.

Also, you might not want to schedule events when there are major tourneys. This weekend was GP Portland, and I know a bunch of my friends headed out west.

Weekly proxy events might not be a bad idea, but definitely keep the entry fee low ($5) if you want people consistently showing up.

I really do appreciate you running these Vintage tourneys, because they are a blast. Just consider that maybe sanctioned tourneys aren't the way to go.

Bob

23  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / *1st place* Meandeck MUD - Black Gold 7/18 on: July 20, 2010, 04:53:02 pm
Iím back.

Magic has always found a way to lure me in. Six months ago, my fiancťe and I went up to Longmont, CO to one of my favorite pizza places and stumbled upon Stonebridge Games. I walked in and saw the owner (a good friend) and chatted about the days of old. I bought a pack of M10 for grins, and as I opened the pack, I felt the same excitement as I had when I first started playing. It had been two years, but right then and there I felt the Magic bug. At around that time, there was an extended PTQ, and I thought, ďwhy not?Ē I saw all my old friends and had a blast playing. Since that time, Iíve been playing in events here and there (even picking up Legacy), but something was missing: my love affair with Vintage. Letís be honest folks, there is no format even close to being as fun as Vintage!

Fast forward to mid-June. Meandeck is working on a MUD list that features Null Rod. I look at the list and am sold that itís the best deck in the format at the moment. I immediately start picking up cards for the deck and start goldfishing it. My boy Brennen Cook (aka JewLightning, aka The Bogard) tells me thereíll be a Vintage tourney at Black Gold on the 18th of July, and just like that, I knew my 2 year hiatus from Vintage was over.

I arrive Sunday to battle with this:

4 Mishraís Workshop
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Black Lotus
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault

4 Sphere of Resistance
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Trinisphere

4 Tangle Wire
4 Null Rod
4 Chalice of the Void
3 Sculpting Steel

4 Lodestone Golem
4 Juggernaut
1 Razormane Masticore

Sideboard:

4 Duplicant
4 Tormodís Crypt
3 Relic of Progenitus
2 Razormane Masticore
2 Crucible of Worlds

Carl announces there are 27 players, so 5 rounds and top 8. Let the games begin!

Round 1: Brian Grewe playing Bob Tendrils
Brian is an awesome guy. He has one of the most pimp collections I have ever seen, and when we talk, he always mentions Stax, so I put him on that.
Game 1 Ė He plays a fetchland, mox, and passes. I play a null rod and pass. He fetches for a nonbasic, and I believe he misses a land drop. I play wasteland followed by a lodestone and seal it up. He was off by one mana all game. SB: +2 Duplicant, -1 Razormane, -1 Mana Vault
Game 2 Ė Much of the same happens. He does cast rebuild at some point in the game, but I drop my hand again and he canít break out of a tangle wire lock. I felt bad, as his confidants repeatedly revealed crap like Force of Will.
1-0, 2-0

Round 2: Andy playing Noble Fish
Andy is another old school player I hadnít seen in ages. I remember us getting paired in a sanctioned Vintage tournament, and we drew because we both played MaskNaught.
Game 1 Ė I win the roll and have the nuts. I go turn 1 city of traitors into sol ring, into trinisphere! He plays a strip mine and passes. On my next turn, I play lodestone golem and wasteland his strip mine. He draws, plays a tropical and passes. I draw blank, attack and pass. He plays a wasteland next turn, but itís useless as I top deck tangle wire. I see strip/waste/trop from Adamís deck, so I put him on Fish or Oath. I didnít know which, so I kept my rods MD, incase he was on Oath. SB: +4 duplicant,  -4 Null Rod
Game 2 Ė He plays a turn 2 Pridemage, while I have turn 2 golem. He kills it and plays some hierarchs and a goyf. My deck loves me today and gives me 3 straight fatties for topdecks.
2-0, 4-0

Round 3: Pierre playing Oath
Pierre is a very nice fellow. People like him are the reason Iíll always prefer this format to any others.
Game 1 Ė I punt pretty badly. Given the choice of turn 1 jugg or turn 1 thorn, I go with the Jugg. He has turn 1 oath. SB: +4 Duplicant, -3 Jugg, - 1 Razormane
Game 2 Ė I have turn 1 thorn, turn 2 golem, turn 3 tangle wire holding more resistors. Heís stuck on 2 lands the entire game.
Game 3 Ė He mulls to 6 but has a force for my turn 1 golem, and plays turn 2 orchard oath. I still almost get there, but make a huge blunder, playing duplicant a turn too early. Iím pretty pissed at myself at this point, because I canít believe I made that misplay. It was even on my mind as it happened!
2-1, 5-2

Round 4: Jim Gaffney playing Dredge
Jim and I have been teammates and good friends since 2003. We draw with the hopes of T8ing with a win in the last round.
2-1-1, 5-2

Round 5: Brennen Cook playing Ad Nauseum Tendrils
Brennen and I are teammates as well, and since he was 2-2 with no shot of T8, he scooped me in. Thanks broseph!
3-1-1, 5-2

I look at the decks in Top 8, and like my odds. Round 1, Iím paired against Pierre. Time for some revenge!

Quarterfinals: Pierre playing Oath
Game 1: I mulligan to 6, but Iím on the play and have turn 1 golem with double tangle wire. Lodestone resolves, and he canít break the lock. SB: +4 Duplicant, -3 Juggernaut, - 1 Razormane Masticore
Game 2: This was one of the most epic games of Vintage I have ever played. Pierre keeps his 7, while I mull to 5. My hand is shop, mox, mana vault, tangle wire, juggernaut. He plays turn 1 mox, orchard, oath. FML. Really? Okay. I draw wasteland and play turn 1 juggernaut. He oaths up most of his deck and finds Emrakul and passes. I topdeck Duplicant, RFG his dude. He oaths up sphinx, plays tinker passes. I draw a waste, attack him, he double blocks 2 dorks, and takes 3 from emrakul when all's said and done. I waste orchard. I play wire. He taps outs, passes, I oath up lodestone, attack him to 1 and it's gg. Sick. I just beat turn 1 orchard/oath with a hand of 5. Thatís Vintage for ya!
4-1-1, 7-2

Semifinals: Zivvy Epstein playing BUG Fish
Game 1: Iím on the play and feel bad for him. My hand was: Ancient Tomb, Mana Crypt, Black Lotus, Trinisphere, Lodestone Golem, Tangle Wire, Chalice. He only has 1 force of will. SB: +4 Duplicant, +2 Crucible, +2 Razormane, - 4 Null Rod, -4 Thorn
Game 2: He has turn 1 Trygon Predator. It gets him there.
Game 3: I open with ancient tomb, chalice 0. Next turn I play a lodestone off double tomb. He resolves. On my turn 3, I drop a sculpting steel and thatís all she wrote.
5-1-1, 9-3

Finals: Carl playing MUD
Game 1: I mull to 5 and keep a hand with no threats but it has turn 1 null rod. Carl breaks out of mana screw before I do. SB: +4 Duplicant, +2 Razormane, +2 Crucible, -4 Thorn, -4 Sphere.
Game 2: The opposite happens. I play turn 1 chalice 0, wasteland. Carl has turn 1 metalworker. I waste his land and play null rod. We sit there drawing dead for multiple turns, until I finally draw a land to play crucible. I get back Academy and promptly play 2 golems. SB: +4 Thorn, -4 Chalice (Chalice comes out in the mirror on the draw)
Game 3: I think Carl is a bit on tilt this game because of the effect null rod had on the previous games. My hand is Shop, Mox, golem, Ancient Tomb x 2, City of traitors, Wasteland. He mulls over his hand for a few moments and finally decides to keep. I keep this hand because I get the feeling Carl may have kept a loose one. He drops his hand on turn 1, but only gets a chalice at 2 and metalworker down. Iím ecstatic. I get turn 1 Golem and start the beats. Heís at 4 life when he finally topdecks a Sword of Fire/Ice, but itís too late, as he has a mana crypt heíll likely die to and I have a juggernaut in hand.
6-1-1, 11-4

So, I win the whole shebang and we go to The Draft, just like old times, to hang out and bullshit. 14 of the 27 people showed up to kick it. Now thatís what I call a close community. Hilarity ensues as we witness THE Conley Woods get into an argument with Brianís wife about Sandwich Punch.

So, after 8 hours of magic, I go home, have a beer with the girl, and canít help but smile and think:

Iím back.

Props:
Carl Ė Thanks so much for holding these tournaments. They are unbelievably well run, and the venue is amazing.
Jimmy Ė Thanks for the ID, I think we both know you would have rolled me. We need to start testing/kicking it again. Also, good beta on those fries homie!
Brennen Ė Thanks for the scoop dog! Also, testing sessions at MHC are the shit. Iím going to miss your Jew ass when you move to Cali.
Trav Ė Thanks for the support homie!
All my opponents Ė You were all awesome. I canít remember the last time I played in a tourney where nobody tried to rules lawyer me. I need to play Vintage more.
Brian Ė Thanks for the Foil Wire! The set looks amazing!
Team Meandeck Ė For putting out the best decks in the format. Bear the banner with pride!

Slops:
Team Black Gold Ė For real guys? Youíre gonna let me walk into your house and clean up? Very Happy I want a grudge match between CC and Black Gold at the next event. 4 players each team, any format.
Fuckiní Lou Ė Vegetarian now? What the fuck is the internet? You know I still love ya brother.
Sandwich Punch Ė What an awful game.

Awesome pics!

Although you didn't get any of me dream-crushing my opponents.

Tournament report on the way...

Also, good playing Vintage again. Standard and Legacy is boring as shit. Good to know that I still got it!

Holy shit this is going to be awesome. Except Steve G will be there.

Fucking A Jimmy, I heard you're growing out a meeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaan beard. Is this true?

Also, CC at The Draft after the event, just like old times.
26  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: BLACK GOLD - Vintage Proxy Event on 7/18 on: July 10, 2010, 12:13:05 am
Awesome! Looks like I'll be in attendance. Be gentle folks, I haven't played Vintage in 2 years or so.

Also, one last question: Will M11 be legal for this event?
27  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: BLACK GOLD - Vintage Proxy Event on 7/18 on: July 07, 2010, 10:52:52 am
Carl, what's the deal with the proxies? Do they need to have oracle text? Or are markered up plains with the name okay?

I'll try my best to make this. Hopefully Trav, Brennen, Jimmy "Jabar" Gaffney, and Zach will be be there with me to represent the CC.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Advice on selling a collection on: March 09, 2010, 04:43:41 pm
I was in the same situation as you about a year ago.

I sold all my power/drains/vintage staples on Ebay or to friends. Then, I sold all my below $20 rares in bulk. Finally, I kept all the lands/commons I couldn't sell.

Now, I'm so glad I kept it, as I'm getting my fiancee into playing peasant magic.

Either way, good luck.

Ricochet Trap   {3}{R}

Instant - Trap    Uncommon

If an opponent cast a Blue spell this turn, you may pay {R} rather than pay Ricochet Trapís mana cost.
Change the target of target spell with a single target.

Comparable to REB, but mostly worse I think.  Definitely worth knowing about, at least.  Misdirecting Ancestral for {R} is pretty hot.

This thing looks interesting. In a counter war, this thing is as good, if not better than REB. Not sure if anyone mentioned, but it dodges chalice. That could be useful when playing a deck like chalice oath.
