Hey guys, quick question. How would reflecting pool work with only a cavern of souls in play? Would it tap for any color of mana?

"Reflecting Pool doesn't care about any restrictions or riders your lands put on the mana they produce, such as Pillar of the Paruns and Hall of the Bandit Lord do. It just cares about types of mana."

Pillar of the Paruns has basically the same wording/format as Cavern, so it looks like the interaction works how you think it does.

In regard to Vintage cards with activation costs that require mana, Belcher costs 3! Although as Kevin put it, it's (hopefully, at least for the Belcher player) typically in the "one-shot use" category.

virtually unprintable in a Standard set

Why do you say this? Just because it's a Wrath effect? Or is there some more meaningful reason im missing

So just out of curiosity, is Nether Void that bad of a card in this deck?  It doesn't affect your combo and you can pay for your artifacts with Mishra's Workshop.  I could see at least one in the sideboard being a card that ends games.

Can you? It looks like the oracle text says counter it unless they pay 3, which to me sounds different than "add 3 mana to the CMC of the card when casting it". So for example, you'd be paying 2 colorless for Phyrexian Revoker and 3 for Nether Void, rather than 5 mana for the Revoker. It looks more similar to the wording on Spell Pierce than a sphere effect

I'm planning on attending, I've been in the area for about 6 months and never bothered to check if there were any local events. A friend went to the store today and told me he saw an ad for Vintage, so here I am.

What kind of attendance are you expecting?

Mind explaining this? Can't seem to figure out if that's just a typo or not...

13  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Vintage Super League on: February 21, 2015, 04:12:46 pm

I think it's fantastic how much exposure the format has gotten via the VSL. I do have to say, though, that it has had a regrettable effect on the quality of conversation in the Twitch feed. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just beginner misconceptions about the format, e.g. "Dredge is a bad deck for bad players where MTGO plays everything for you." But 90% of all posts are utter inanities, like "press 1 if you want Efro to win, 2 if you want his opponent to lose" and spamming "Paul" over and over again for inscrutable reasons.

This seems extremely mild and tame for Twitch chat...
14  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Dack Slaver on: February 21, 2015, 04:08:10 pm

You can't actually make your opponent bolt his own Planeswalker even when controlling his turn.

Can you explain this? I'm looking at the rulings for Mindslaver and cant see why you wouldnt be able to do that. If a player can Bolt their own permanent out of their own volition, why cant I do it to them if i use Mindslaver?

:: hmm, it seems that only opponents can redirect the damage to planeswalkers. interesting

Update: Randy Buehler/LSV finals.   Wow.  Randy is up game 1.

Any idea if there will be any official replays of the tournament, or if any big name players plan on releasing anything from their perspectives?
20  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Keeping Track of Storm Count on: December 19, 2014, 02:40:29 am

A player is not required to provide their opponent with a running total of how many spells have been played during the turn.

Thanks for the ruling. I would certainly be fine with providing my opponent with the number if he asked, but I was pretty sure I didnt have to provide and increment a public number each time a spell was played during a turn
21  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Vintage Streams on: December 11, 2014, 11:05:56 am

I gotta admit, though, I clicked over to your "hilarious" podcast and had to turn if off pretty quick, Steve.  In the first few minutes we saw a rare moment of emotional vulnerability as you described accidentially deleting of some of your old streams and, as soon as the game started against Dredge, you left to get a drink for a few minutes.  Not exactly gripping television. Smile

I was kinda hesitant to continue watching too but it was pretty good after that moment Razz

Outside of LSV's videos, the only videos for Vintage i've seen are either silent/outsider spectated tournament games, or the Vintage Super League. Would love to see the thought processes explained throughout the game from the player's perspective
24  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Keeping Track of Storm Count on: December 10, 2014, 12:34:07 am

I just played a game online on Cockatrice using a Tendrils build, and came across a thorny situation.

Opponent is at 16, I generate 6 storm, Demonic Tutor for Tendrils, and cast it for lethal damage. My opponent says I hadn't been counting storm, and i immediately copy+pasted the list of spells I had played that turn to show it was indeed 8 spells. He stated that had I been counting the storm using one of the mana bubbles or something, he would have played differently (Deathrite Shaman'ing a Demonic Tutor instead of Ancestral Recall, since he had a Mental Misstep in hand). I asked if it was protocol for online/paper tournaments to keep track of the storm count for your opponent like that, and he said yes.

I thought this was strange, because if I only began visibly keeping track of the storm count during the turn i was going off, that'd be fairly obvious what I was going to do and he could act accordingly. In order to prevent that, i'd have to count storm for every single turn, including those where I only play one spell, which would be quite tedious and just seems unnatural i think. That combined with the fact that i've never ever seen anyone (even MTGO goesnt have a visible storm counter from what ive seen) count storm on a turn where they weren't considering going all-in leads me to believe it's not my job to provide the storm count throughout the turn for my opponent.

Anyone have any insight on this scenario?

Quick question about the play: Joel plays Cursecatcher, Ryan plays Mental Misstep and responds with Mental Misstep to generate 2 pyro tokens, but it looks like he targets his own Misstep instead of sending both Missteps at the Cursecatcher. Am i missing something or does that play just not make sense?
29  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Random Questions on: October 15, 2014, 03:23:22 pm

Unless you're ok to go with a "it depends" answer, I don't think giving you a rule#1 in Vintage is very helpful.

I guess i should have worded my question better, but you answered it perfectly. Was just looking for some different scenarios so i could analyze the thought process for choosing which card to target. Thanks for the info!
30  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Random Questions on: October 14, 2014, 09:34:02 pm
Hello all, just had a couple of questions regarding literally playing Vintage in person, and a tactical question about counterspells. Not sure if this is the correct place, but it seemed to be the most accurate place based on the descriptions.

I've only ever played Vintage online on Magic Workstation. How does it work when you play in a tournament setting with regards to switching phases? Do you have to announce upkeep, draw, main, attack, end every single turn? Is there any shortcuts? When i play on MWS, you just go to the phase you want, and if the other person wants to play something before switching phases they'll just say "Wait!". i remember watching a video of a Vintage match, BUG vs workshops. The shops player had an active Tanglewire in play, and the Bug player untaps and says "draw?" without tapping for Tangle and the shops player says okay. The BUG player draws and then the shops player realizes he didnt tap for Tangle, but apparently the new rules its on the player who owns the trigger to announce them, and he received a warning for not maintaining proper gamestate, or something along those lines. So is it standard to announce every single phase for every single turn, or did he just do that to avoid tapping to the wire?

Another unrelated question: When youre in a large counter war, is there any reason to target the original spell instead of one of their counters? For instance:

Player 1: Ancestral Recall
Player 2: Mental Misstep targeting Recall
Player 1: Counterspell targeting Mental Misstep
Player 2: Mana drain

Is there any tactical advantage (in general) to choosing to Mana Drain the Recall over the Counterspell, or vice versa? I think i tend to counter the original spell when im playing but ive thought about it a lot and im not sure if its the correct play.

Thanks for your time!
