1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Shandalar on: March 08, 2016, 01:33:09 pm
Hey guys,
I am wondering if anyone knows a reliable source to download Shandalar that is compatible with Windows 10.
I have the original game which of course you cannot play anymore unless you own an antique computer.
With people streaming Shandalar recently it has got me the itch to play it again.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

2  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: Sideboarding with Workshop Aggro on: January 22, 2016, 04:05:16 pm
I can't pull up LSV's Stax list right now (MTG site seems to be down for a few of the decklists), but I was surprised to see him bring in Leyline of the Void for the mirror.  Was he that short of things to bring in, or have other shops players had success with this?  I know his mana base supports it much more easily than most shops lists, but was curious if anyone else likes this move?

Hey Josh,
LOTV is a strong card in the mirror.
It shuts off CoW from the opponents side so they cannot recur their Wastelands and Strip Mine.
Essentially making one of their best cards useless.
It also has the added bonus of shutting off Ravager's modular effect, Skullclamp and HBW.
I will employ this strategy against other shops decks.

Edit: Sorry Josh didn't see this had already been answered by Vaughnbros

4  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [OGW] Warping Wail on: January 07, 2016, 01:25:37 pm

What Warping Wail doesn't hit is the aforementioned Mentors, JVP, LSG (all Shops big Robots), BSC, Ojutai, Trygon Predator, and DRS.

Warping wail hits Jace, Vryn's prodigy and DRS. Warping wail exiles a creature with power OR toughness less than 1. So JVP at power 0 gets wailed, as does DRS at power 1.

Even better, missed that part.
5  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [OGW] Warping Wail on: January 07, 2016, 12:55:58 pm
I like this card for Shops!

My feeling is the "Exile target creature with power or toughness 1 or less" is quite poor overall compared to Dismember at the extra cost of 2 life.
However it exiles a significant amount of cards that do see play such as Delver, Pyromancer, Dark Confident, Notion Thief, Kataki, Goblin Welder, Thalia, Spirit of the Labyrinth, snapcaster, HBW @1, Ravager and Revoker (was corrected and does his JVP and DRE which is even better).
IMO the current Meta (Modo) isn't seeing alot of these creatures right now as Mentor is overwhelming creature of choice.

What Warping Wail doesn't hit is the aforementioned Mentors, LSG (all Shops big Robots), BSC, Ojutai, Trygon and Predator.

Taking all this into consideration I would rather have Dismember when looking at a direct removal comparison in a bubble.

The Counter sorcery spell is pretty awesome addition for Workshops as it is something we have never had before.
At first glance of this feature I thought it rather insignificant until I started working through the amount of Vintage playable Sorcery's.
We have Wheel of Fortune, TimeTwister, Time Walk, Ponder, Preordain, Imperial seal, Demonic tutor, Gitaxian probe, Merchant Scroll, Treasure Cruise, Thoughtcast, Tinker, Yawgmoth's Will, Doomsday, Thoughtsieze, Duress, and SNT.

Wow, I would drool at countering pretty much every single spell just mentioned and watch my opponent either cry or burn a counter spell to stop it. Solid!

The last choice of the 1/1 Eldrazi Scion is pretty poor and the worst of the 3.
However it adds versatility to the card in that it is an instant speed chump blocker (opponent: he has no blockers and is dead with my alpha strike. Opps he has an instant blocker now and can now kill me on the back swing).
As Matt mentioned above you can attach Swords/ Jitte to them which in creature famine it can be back breaking.
If you are also desperate to find that one mana in your deck to pull ahead it could be an emergency ESG (EOT cast it, untap and you have that 4'th mana for LSG).

Warping Wail obviously cannot be cast with Workshop mana and doesn't play nice with Sphere's at all.
If you are a Workshop player and are a fan of the anti-synergy of Dismember and Sphere's in Shops, then this seems like a very reasonable card to break into the line up imo.

Overall I am a fan of the versatility this card brings to Shops and will definitely be testing this thing out.
The best of the 3 abilities is the second because of the uniqueness it brings to a mono colored deck.
Beware all non Workshop players that when you cast that Yawgmoth's Will next time a counterspell may be lurking. hehe.

8  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: New card-draw land on: December 14, 2015, 02:41:48 pm
I think this card has big balls and will definitely see play in Shops, let alone other non-shop archetypes.
the age old story for Shops is there is minimal card draw and this card helps shore this up at the expense of another land (yes I realize that Portal / Staff draw cards)
So you take out a Cavern, Factory or Homeward Bound and slot 1 of these in it's place.
I cannot tell you how many games I have been in draw and go positions playing Shops. This card would be like hitting the lottery in those positions.
It will see play.

Good work Steve and thanks for taking the time to do this.
Storm has only increased it's presence on MTGO since this event.
Having played in several DE's since the P9 Challenge I am seeing Storm twice an event on average (Wednesday 3/4 rounds).
With the decline in Shops there is little repercussions in running the deck.
These P9 events are amazing and I think Vintage is blooming on modo since their inception!

I couldn't resist building this things last night with a few minor changes.
I loved Erayo back in the day.
I only played a small sample size, but man was it fun when I flipped Erayo.
I was able to do it 2 or 3 times and never lost a game when it happened.
Also remembered how good B2B is.
I will continue to tinker with this deck.
Alot of fun. Thanks for posting it!

I have been seeing quite a few new faces playing Vintage in both DE's and in TP room.
People like to play for big prizes, so perhaps the P9 series is indeed causing an influx of new blood.
Can't wait for the next one!

16  Eternal Formats / Online Tournaments / Re: MTGO Vintage Power Nine (?) Tournament - 10/24 on: October 19, 2015, 01:43:20 pm
These prizes leave alot to be desired.
If you don't have 250 play points lying around, 25 tix is a pretty steep entry fee.
I mean if these were special edition promo P9 they were handing out, then I would be very excited.
VM p9 is run of the mill stuff and nothing special about it.
The play points as prizes is an old story in that I still don't like them.

Having said that I am glad to have big Vintage events again and hope they will succeed.
17  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Guy finds binder with Power9 on NY Comic Con... on: October 16, 2015, 04:15:38 pm
This story motivates me to tell my own.
I had my entire collection stolen at a pre-release about 13 years ago.
Why i had all my cards with me is another story, but it was a devastating experience for me.
That day while mopping around an acquaintance of mine who owned a store locally gave me his trade binder to help lower the sting.
It was nowhere near what I lost, but what a good person he is to have done so.
Regardless, It was almost impossible to recoup what I lost, so I stopped playing magic in paper after that.
I have never forgotten that gesture of kindness he showed me though.
It wasn't until recently when i started to buy into paper Vintage that I opened up that binder he gave me and there were all sorts of goodies in there that i didn't know i had.
PS of Karakas, Foreign U-sea, Badlands, Beta Sol Ring, Demonic tutor, amongst many others.
Those cards got me back on the path to help fund my journey to play paper Vintage!
There is still goodness in this corrupt world we live in.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Suggestions For Improving the Online Vintage Experience on: October 09, 2015, 11:38:19 am
What's the bottom line, then?  Which is better?

And, any idea why the Vintage daily last night didn't fire?

We fired last night with I believe 16 people, which was the best turnout we have had in quite sometime.
The night previous we didn't fire with 8 in queue.
I tried to rally people for the one that didn't fire and of the 4 people I asked (previous Vintage regulars) they said it was the steep cost to join the event.
Time will tell how this will shake down, but last night was pretty great having a 4 round event again.

19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Magic Online Power Nine Owners on: October 08, 2015, 10:40:59 am
Ok, reading thru this I only have 1 question: can you still get the vintage cards on mtgo?  I just got my account back. I have just shy of 13k cards from Kamigawa thru about coldsnap  If so, how do I go about it? I'm going to read back thru the thread a bit more closely and hopefully tonight I'll have some time to poke around. But the interface and gameplay are nothing like what I remember from back in 2006 when it was quick and easy to use.

Yes the cards are still available on magic online Khahan.
You cannot buy the Vintage Masters Boosters any longer from the store, but can buy the singles from private owners.
Your best bet is to goto the Classifieds and search for what you are looking for ie) Black Lotus.
Another option is if you are not penny pinching to go to a site like http://www.mtgotraders.com/store/index.html
and you can purchase them there as well as use as a loose price guide.
If you have any questions feel free to look me up online and I can help you navigate things.
The interface is very likely alien since you last where around.
Things have changed alot since then.

@ IslandSwamp

As someone who played alot of Workshops in the MTGO Classic format. Once they restricted LSG the deck was dead and so was the format shortly there after.
If you restrict LSG in Vintage the deck will be absolutely on the tier 2 level.

Completely agree with you Steve.
I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but when you have been around modo for as long as I have you learn to eat disappointment for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Suggestions For Improving the Online Vintage Experience on: September 15, 2015, 08:06:52 am
Nice write up Rich and Steve!

I agree with all your thoughts here.
The infinite loop issue has been known to WOTC for as long as I can remember. I used to bang my head against the wall in the modo format "Classic" trying to Metalworker/ Staff combo for years.
It would be so very sweet to see Dragon and Salvager's be viable on modo ( I did play some Dragon last weekend on modo, and was determined to make it work. FAIL).

The re-introduction of PE's would be amazing. I agree that monthly PE's could fire if we plan ahead.

The Winter Festival was an amazing success. If we could have 1-2 (if not quarterly) of these a year it would help draw a lot more attention to Vintage and keep our player base happy (The prizes where ridiculous for this event).

Player Points=boosters is great in theory, and I agree having non tradable points is a terrible supplement for what we had (booster payout).
The problem is I just don't see them investing the time into programming something like this. I hate to say it but it took them several years to get leagues back into circulation.
This would be so far down the totem pole for them it isn't even funny.

Results is a serious problem for modo Vintage right now.
Since going to 3 rounds they only post the 3-0 deck lists which is typically 1 list now.
This is abysmal for data, and far worse than it was when we had 4 round events.
I have to be honest I have just stopped looking at the lists as it is now essentially useless.
I am really in support of going back to 4 round events. I agree with you guys in that i do like the time commitment of 3 rounds better as they are more conducive to my lifestyle, but it just feels so much worse. I mean the other night I got a round 1 bye, played round 2 and my round 3 opponent quit? I waited 3 days to play in that event. lol.

The best feature imo that was implemented with the play points was the ability to fire an event with 8 people or less. The irony of it all though is that we never had much difficulty firing events with the 16 player minimum when we were moved to 7 events a week.
We now can fire events with 8 people or less, but of course we lost a good portion of our player base with these changes. Sigh. Seems like a bad deal to me.

I really commend you guys on your suggestions and ability to convey your message to WOTC in an optimistic and neutral manor.
I however, cannot repress my venom for WOTC and these changes they have made. I have to say MTGO Vintage is in a pretty bad spot right now. I have never been so uninspired to play. The prize payout is unacceptable. The 3 round events are ridiculous.

Worth and his team are misguided. They act without thinking things through thoroughly causing more damage then good. I mean when they moved us from V3 to V4 it was incomprehensible what we where given. V4 was and still is a completely unpolished program. I am talking Beta stage product at best. They still haven't given us satisfactory foils after all this time. WOTC has completely desecrated the value of foils and my collection with it. I have seen to many examples of incompetence from these people to think otherwise.

We are a small group of people the "Vintage Community". We will always come last in WOTC eyes as we don't bring the money in like the other formats.
These changes you have suggested are all spot on, but I am skeptical we will see any change. WOTC has bigger more important issues to tackle.
Hopefully you guys can have some influence here, where others have failed.

Thanks again, and great write up.
I am in full support of your suggested changes.
Andy

I gave up on vintage on MTGO. Made no sense to sit on $6000+ worth of "cards" to play what amounts to a glorified 8 man event. The attendance is bad, the prizes are bad, and the support for the format is nearly non-existant.

I cashed out at MTGO Traders, and jumped right into standard, modern, and limited, loving it so much more.

I could see buying back in, but not under the current conditions.

I feel the same way right now.
MTGO Vintage is just garbage. The payouts are atrocious and it just isn't fun anymore.
I am pretty disenchanted with Vintage on modo right now.
Perhaps you have the right idea Flash.

Try playing in the player run events on gatherling if you can make it. The current schedule is Sunday 11am and Tuesday 8:30pm. Having more good players like you play in them would be very helpful. Hopefully if enough people start playing in them there can be some buy-in tournaments with real stakes. I'm aware the payouts aren't currently large but the foundation has to be built.

Perhaps I will jump in sometime, but I just have no incentive to play a tournament that pays out 5 tickets to first place.

I pre-registered at "PreReg.Me" for both Legacy and Vintage and didn't receive any email confirmation.
Has anyone else pre-registered for this had the same experience?
I am nervous that without a confirmation that I will show up to the event and will be told sorry no evidence of you on the card  Surprised

I spoke to Card Titan today and they confirm that the Pre-Registry program hasn't been sending out confirmation emails once you have registered.
They are working on this issue.
The store has the registration list and can confirm if you are looking for assurance.
VIP option should be up today.

Shockwave ran one of these a number of months ago with pretty good prize support.
Hardly anyone showed up at all. I think it was less then a DE.
I am always happy to play Vintage and would show up, but I echo many thoughts from above that this shouldn't conflict with a DE imo.
The Gatherling is a good deck register / pairings engine if you are looking for one.
WOTC has definitely supported many PRE's over the years with some pretty spicy prizes.
You may want to contact them to see if they want to pitch in.
WOTC is very much wanting Vintage to thrive so it's the least they could do after what they are putting us through .
29  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: MTGO Play Points & changes to Dailies on: July 24, 2015, 01:28:55 pm
This is good news in that we should be able to fire every DE with an 8 player minimum.
This is a major downgrade though as we can't play 4 rounds of Vintage.
I understand that with less then 16 people in an event that the logistics get all weird with 4 rounds and that 3 rounds is better suited.
However we didn't ask for less rounds of magic in a DE for the ability to fire more easily.
My feeling is we fire most Vintage DE's and the one's that don't fire are at a minimum.
I still think the prizes are poor substitute and like the old way of prize payout better than play points.
This all just feels bad and this is a further kick in the pants.
Foils also look like dog shit. I have been asking for a change for over a year now. I get one finally and they are just so much worse.
What is going on here WOTC?
