Cap seems a little too slow to me, it takes what, 6 mana to activate? It is possible to be done by turn three, maybe not two if you get atleast 4 mana sources turn one, and with that to work out it is likely that you will have no counter backup, therefore the Oath player will have a good chance to counter it. Cap also is stopped by Null Rod, which isnt good because Oath often times brings in Rod versus CS.

Blood Moon doesnt seem very good in CS because it shuts off just about your entire deck except for the six basic Islands that you can't even fetch for. I may be mistaken because I admit that I am no Control Slaver player myself, it's just this game plan doesnt seem like the best idea to me.

Cap takes 2 to activate not 6.  Only 6 if you cast it and activate it in the same turn.  Going by that reasoning mindslaver takes 10.  Cap is tinkered or welded just like slaver is.  In this matchup caps effect is usually far greater than slavers, as it is faster and potential game ending.  Bloodmoon will cripple the oath players manabase.  It will effect him way more than you.  Its a win if they didnt give you a token yet.  They have 1 rushing river and two islands (sometimes less).  Trust me when I say this bloodmoon is a very viable option if you can find the room in your sb.

The guys from GWS are right, the best way is to use splash over cards like duress, ReB doesn't effect it too much bc/ ICBM oath doesnt have enough U spells to hit, I d much rather have Drain.  My favorite way to beat it is Bloodmoon & cap.  Cap is good against combo and drain decks and blood moon can catch ppl off guard in the right meta.  If you have high dragon and 5c stax matchups in your meta bloodmoon will hit enough decks to warrant its use.

I really dont like siding out mystical, because you can no longer chain merchant scroll -> mysitcal -> will (or tinker, etc.).

Also, I like to leave in 1 chain so that I can still randomly storm out, or even bounce weldars/shaman (not the strongest play though...)

Most ppl sideboard out Mystical and Vamp vs. drain decks bc/ they are card disadvantage.  Then again I have lost in the late game with CS bc/ i couldnt get mystical with scroll after winning a counter war.  But in general most ppl take out the disadvantage tutors.

Take the time to type out "people" rather than "ppl."  Internet slang is generally avoided like the plague on TMD.  Also, I fixed your quote tag.

Congrats to TK for winning waterberry.  That makes it 1 scg 1st place, 4th place and winning a waterberry within 3 months.  Thats one hell of a winning streak.  Also congrats to Becker for creating another combo monster.  I was there in Scg Charolette when he combo out on turn 0.  It was funny when he split someones lip open by throughing a magic card at them (Becker really is the worlds most deadly man with a magic card).
5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Deck Discussion] Meandeck Ichorid on: April 15, 2006, 08:26:02 am
I ve played against a lot of versions of the deck and they are all very good.  How is your oath matchup, if it is one of the weaker ones you could add ray of relevation in the SB of the deck.  That would also allow you to hit planar void (which no one plays) or other problem enchantments that you might run into.
6  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Ongoing Richmond Results on: March 19, 2006, 02:36:51 pm
Ichorid is a solid deck, and a pain to play against.  Its worst matchups are anything that wins quick.  I have noticed playing against it you need to get collosus on the board within the first 3 turns to have a shot.
7  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Ongoing Richmond Results on: March 18, 2006, 06:52:19 pm
I heard ICBM is out.  1 GWS member made it for sure with IT and another has to win this round to get in.  I think that Smmendian might be the only meadeck member to make it with Ichorid.
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Deck] Thirst For Knowledge in 'Tog' on: February 06, 2006, 08:47:30 am
I ve been playing tog for a long time now, winning a piece a power, drains and numerous small prizes.  The basic complaint that everyone has about it is the cost of int./ak engine.  Notice that your build you will most likely pay 2U for a 1 card net advantage, maybe 2.  It is true that Int./ ak trades for 2 (in which you recieve 3 new cards) but the point ppl miss is that it thins you library by six (-3aks that you int. and the 3 cards you draw).  This increases the chances of hiting vital spells.  So in essence you pay UU3 to thing your library by 6.
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Proxies: Yet another re-evaluation of a touchy subject on: December 22, 2005, 10:55:04 am
Here's my problem with the continual increase in the amount of proxies.  On some level it is harder to play when you look over and see land cards, but I can cope.  My problem is that there will eventually be no point to own the cards.  If people no longer desire to own the cards, then why even play for a card prize, just play for cash.  At the very least I think players should strive for owning welders, forces, oaths, and some duals.  There may be a need to up the proxy level to 12.  If people use the arguement of competitiveness, then we should make it unlimited proxy.  That would allow everyone to use the same card pool.  Better yet, just require laptops and use MWS or Apprentice...wait that again defeats the purpose.  I just feel on some level you should stride to own some of the cards, even if its a handful of 15-20 rares.  If people can push for a bunch of 10-20 dollar rares in every other format they can hold onto a few for vintage.  But thats just my opinion.  I dont know, i say unlimited proxy and I ll sell all my cards and just use playing cards.

I am also a big fan of Control of the Courts/goblin lore, it is undercosted for what it does.  I secretly have been testing life of the loam in certain decks.  It seems to be a solid card.
11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Exploring 5C Oath with Ravnica on: October 23, 2005, 09:27:20 am
One thing about suppression field is that it affects your permenants as well.  You run four fetches and a set a moxen, so it will cut these sources off as well.  I know since it is your card you would cast it when it gives you the biggest advantages, but later in the game it will most likely effect you as you may need to fetch for a land.  Second I would probably not run Furnace with SF, as it will be effect also.  I second the motion to note support compulsive research as stated before, instant speed draw is much better because it allows you to bluff drain, which this deck doesnt have but at the same time allows you to draw at the end of your opponents turn freeing up your turn.

If you're playing in a stax-less meta, you might want to give Tog a try. (Hey, that's me!)
Quote

I honestly think that Tog's best matchup are shop decks.  Last winter my former teamate and I were able to slice through the rounds in a mox tourney in chicago with Italian tog lists.  4 cunning wishes main is big advantage vs most shop decks.  5/3 used to be a harder matchup than stax, due to the speed it had, especially when it could play 4 3spheres, making it more reliable.  But post sb the abliity to have 5-6 (counting c-wishes) rack N ruins is usually too much for shop.  The only shop list I had trouble with is 7/10, for most of the obvious reasons, that the big guy destroys your land base.  I still feel that instant speed draw is the way to go, and even though Franklin did well, I cant see the need for four mercant scrolls, but thats probably due to my more controllish play style.
13  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tog and Gifts on: July 26, 2005, 05:25:56 pm
I would never fun tog without four cunning wishes in the deck.  Its one of the best cards Tog has.  I do not care for merchant scroll in tog.  I played with 1-2 in the deck and it feels slow.  Its hard to justify mercant scroll for ancestral right now.  With gifts decks running rampant I see that as a bad play.  Merchant scroll for wish, is a 5 mana play.  I usually have no problem drawing into wish, bc it is a four of.  I agree that Deeps are too slow right now.  Really we are arguing over a 1 of in my deck.  But there are two cards that I would run in that slot and there are pros and cons to each.  1 is FoF and the other is gifts.  Most of the thread, ppl are against will bc/ you cant abuse it as much as gifts.  Its still a good card.  It is a blue double demonic tutor.  Usually I will gifts for anwser & card draw in the same stack.  Then the opponent has to ask himself do I want to lose my stuff or give him some card advantage.  Gifts is a late game card, FoF is an early play card.  I most likely never remove a gifts card with tog and cunning for it.  I run two kill conditions, be it two togs or 1 tog 1 colossus.  If tog is on the board I will most likely win.  There are only a few times I can remember not winning.  I would rather wish for fling with tog on the board, unless they are a deck that runs Misdirection.  I guess if you dont like my list dont run it.  I ve been doing ok with it, I still dont think Deeps are good in the meta right now, and if they were I probably wouldn't run three, that seems like over kill, unless all you face is control and no one ever plays, aggro, stax, or combo in your meta.
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tog and Gifts on: July 25, 2005, 06:47:59 pm
well......in a set comming up there is this card UB: target player discards the top 10 cards of his or her libary i think that would work wonders in tog and other decks as well :p

I dont see how this adds to the gifts discusion, but is the card an instant, sorcery.  Bc/ an instant that takes 1/6 of your deck away is pretty broken for 2 mana.  It sounds more like an ability of a big clunky creature.  I wont use it in tog, doesnt fit into it.  Do you mean for it to take 10 cards away from your opponent, (could be good, could be bad, cough madness, dragon, Misdirection, cough) or do you mean for more tog food by doing your library, bc/ that seems stupid to me, buts thats just me talking.  But back to gifts, as a one of in tog it is a decent utility card, but it has to be late game.  Its hard to say, bc/ I tried FoF, and thats better early game, but gifts is way better in the late game.  Still not stupid broken like a gifts deck but a nice draw piece.
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tog and Gifts on: July 22, 2005, 06:54:19 am
I tried Merchant Scroll in place of the gifts slot.  I did not care for it that much.  I want it to be more like Mystical tutor and fect me utility cards like RnR, or other answers.  I think if I was gonna replace it in the md it would become FoF, and I would put Scrying in the SB as a Wish target for drain.  FoF would do better MD, bc, it is blue and pitchable to FoW.  I still havent had an issue with MD gifts.  As a 1 of it doesn't come up as much as you d think.  But it can be useful in getting you tools, such as an Explosives, RnR or Land if you need it.  If need be you can set up the will with it.  I think the problem is most ppl want to use it to take multiple turns, or for Gifts to be as broken in tog as it is in Gifts decks.  The reply to that is it is simply not, and cannot.  My main game plan with tog is still to draw off AK's I intuitioned for.  Gifts is just an added utility card, sort of a blue double demonic tutor.  As for the deeps, I like them, I used to run 2 MD, but then your always (or at least I did) SB them out in the combo, and aggro matchs.  They only shine against other control decks.  That is my analysis so far, I ll probably try the configuration with FoF md over gifts this weekend and see how I like sb scrying.
16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tog and Gifts on: July 19, 2005, 05:03:50 pm
I dissagree with the four color version being the only way to go with tog right now.  It leaves the mana base too vunerable to wastes and esp. the walking armageddon.  Its hard enough playing 7/10 with a three color mana base let alone a 4 color base.  Besides berserk, I don't see what green adds to the party.  I guess naturalize is useful, but you can hit most enchantments with E.E., or bounce them back to their owners hand.  Ground Seal is the best weapon green has but, you can get the same effect out of other cards without sacraficing the mana base.  I love being able to berserk tog but at the same time tweaking the mana base for one card is uneeded.  I myself prefer the UBr.  I guess deed is the one thing green truely adds, but I prefer E.E. to it due to the speed of it.  You can pop EE on the same turn you set.  A lot of this is just play preference.  If the 4 color base works for you by all means keep it.
17  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tog and Gifts on: July 19, 2005, 03:53:21 pm
Merchant Scroll may very well be better than gifts, I will test that.  It just seems Scroll for Mystical, then mystical for tinker is a bit slow.  With my play style I would most likely want an instant draw spell.  If I was gonna run something over gifts it would probably be FoF.  I would however not cut a Cunning wish, I never did not want to see a cunning wish.  I used to play to UBg, with berserk, its how I won my first mox, I just feel that the UBr version is stronger right now, because of ReB and RnR.  I tried the mana denial route for tog, and didnt care for it.  It had more of a 3cc feel to it.  I like as mana U sources of mana as I can get.  LoA over Boseiju was strictly a Meta call, I agree that it is better.  I traded my LoA months ago bc/ I feel it was uneeded.  The reason I ran LoA over Boseiju was bc/ of the heavy shop meta, and comes into play tapped doesn't excite me, but I like to mention I just picked up a foil Boseiju  Mr. Green!  At the very least, try gifts as a one of and if you dont find use for it dont run it.  As for the Deeps that is Really togs back up draw engine just in case you run into an AK mirror, and it is very good agaisnst control decks as well.  As I said before I just have a preference for instant speed tutor or draw.  When Portal is legalized I may try the new blue mystical tutor (but that will depend on how much Drain decks I expect to see.).
18  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tog and Gifts on: July 19, 2005, 03:05:10 pm
It might be, but I like instant draw spells.  I was simply testing gifts in Tog.  Instant Speed Draw suits my play style, if the meta I was playing in was heavy control I would of had 2 deeps main.  The meta was very random, I am not trying to say tog abuses gifts, more or less it is a good instant speed tutor.  If you would ask me what I would replace gifts with, most likely FoF.  But I used gifts a few times and I liked how it worked out in tog.  It maybe that I keep on testing it and I ends up being worse than I thought, than that is fine.  I never claimed for tog to be a gifts deck, just that as a one of it is not that bad.  Here is a link to my tournament report http://www.themanadrain.com/forums/index.php?topic=23928.new#new . The meta was very random and that maybe why gifts was good.  When a meta is random usually the deck with the most powerful cards wins.

I used to play gush, towards the end of last year, but the lost of tempo creates pushed me away from it.  I didn't mind the gifts but to be honest I only used it a few times.  It is not as bad as everyone is giving it credit for in tog.  It is not totally broken as it is with Gifts decks but it is sold.  If I was gonna change gifts I would probably make it a FoF instead, but then I would probably add another draw target to the SB.  Hopefully we ll have another tournament that I can make it too soon, I had a great time and met some great ppl.  It was nice being able to play vintage, since I haven't picked up a card since May.  Also belated congradulations on having the child I thought you said that he was 10 yrs old.  I look forward to meeting the Green Dragon Crew again.

Yes I realize that, that is why Gifts is a one of.  I have been playing tog for a long time now and I still dont care much for deep analysis.  The meta here was random Aggro, and heavy shop.  Deeps are not too good against that.  That is why I choose to run a single copy of Gifts in the deck.  It does fairly well.  I never blindly casts gifts, the bulk of my draw engine is Intuition AK.  I feel in the current state of magic the drain combo decks are too quick for the inclusion of deeps, if I intuition for something it will usually be for ak, since most control decks aren't running it right now.  The only one that I have seen is oath.  Usually Gifts grabed me recall or something else, though a lot of people gave me mystical tutor, which I like.  If I stacked the Gifts Recall, Demonic, Mystical, and Random card X (usually a lotus, or walk), I would get at least two good cards.  I ll take a recall and walk and draw into answers.  People are assuming that gifts is a draw engine in my deck, it is not, it is a blue double tutor.  My deck did not contain recoup to flashback anything, bc/ that takes up more slots and tog doesn't run as much artifact accel as the gifts decks.  As a one of gifts doesn't come up as much as anyone is assuming, and with Tinker/colossus you have an out just in case you see a lot of crypts.  I found it very nice having a way to win without using the graveyard.
21  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / 1st Place, 10 Proxy For a Mana Drain- July 16th, Charleston, SC on: July 19, 2005, 10:28:07 am
1st Place, 10 Proxy For a Mana Drain- July 16th, Charleston, SC
31 People, 5 Rounds of swiss, with cut to the top 8
I have been fairly successful late last year and the beginning of this year, winning two power tourney’s and placing in a few top 4’s.  Then I hit a wall in the months of April and May, I ran out of ideas and because of difficulties in my personal life I was very distracted.  So basically I did not look at a magic card from May and June.  I moved down to the Deep South, and wasn’t sure that there was a vintage circuit down here.  I started scouring the web and found a local shop.  They were mostly T2 players, but some detective work led me to Morning Star games in Savannah.  There they had a T1 seen but it hasn’t been big in a while.  From there I learn of a store that was having a T1 10 proxy for an English Drain in Charleston, SC.  This is only 180 miles away on the interstate, so it’s really not the far of a trip.  The secondary prize support is really good that is one of the deciphering factors in my decision to go.
I start play testing and have come to a decision to play one of two decks, Slaver or workshop aggro.  I decided to go with slaver because I haven’t played with drains in a long time.  After some testing with my team, I@n suggests that I play tog because of the shop heavy Meta it is suppose to be down here.  So I start toying around with it and surprised with the speed of it.  I cut out the Deeps because they are too slow for the current environment.  I also wanted a kill condition that didn’t involve the graveyard.  I took an old T1Tog list that I@n used in Chi-town to win a Mox.

T1T
Mana 23
4 Delta
1 Strand
4 Underground
3 Volcanic
3 Islands
1 LoA
5 Moxen
1 Lotus
1 Mana Crypt

Draw 20
1 Ancestral
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Mystical
2 Deep Analysis
3 Intuition
4 AK’s
4 Brainstorm
4 Cunning Wish

Disruption 12
4 FoW
4 Drains
3 Duress
1 E.E.

Broken Goodness 3
1 Yawg Will
1 Time walk
1 Mind twist

Kill 2
Tog

I felt the bulk of the list is still solid, and since the Meta is most likely pretty random, except for the shop decks, but I feel tog has a good match up Vs shop anyway.  I removed the two Deep’s and 1 Tog for 1 Gifts, 1 Colossus, and 1 Tinker.  I wanted a win that didn’t use the yard, so I felt Colossus was strong.  And most people wouldn’t see it coming in tog.  Gifts is there because it’s a broken card and every deck with drain should run at least 1 copy.  At the very least it will net you two broken cards.  I did some testing and wasn’t seeing fetch lands as often as I wanted so I decided to up the count.  The list I decided to run was as follows:

Tog 2k5

Mana 23
3 Polluted Delta’s
3 Flooded Strand
3 Underground Sea
3 Volcanic Island
3 Island
1 LoA
5 Moxen
1 Lotus
1 Sol Ring

Draw/Tutor 19
1 Ancestral
4 Brainstorm
4 AK’s
3 Intuition
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Gifts Ungiven
4 Cunning Wish

Distruption 11
4 FoW
4 Drains
3 Duress

Utility 1
E.E.

Broken Stuff 4
1 Mindtwist (In deck Bc/ of random Meta, which had lots of random Aggro)
1 Yawg Will
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker

Big Guys
1 Tog
1 Colossus

I felt the maindeck is strong for the current meta, except for Mindtwist, that is purely a Meta call.  If I were to play at SCG with lots of Misdirections running around, I would probably cut it for another duress or E.E.  The second question was what to make the SB look like.  The obvious were added bc/ of the shop heavy Meta 2 Rack and Ruin, 1 Hurkyl’s, Then 2 ReB’s are there bc/ of control, 1 Pyroblast for Mages in opposition to running 3 ReB’s.  The fact is there for a drain target.  I added the Vamp bc/ it lets me win faster, and after playtesting on MWS I would often wish for it when it wasn’t there.  The 2 shackles are in the SB for Random aggro.  Lava Darts there for welders, and the 2 Purges are for Gift decks.  So the SB went something like this:

2 RnR
1 Hurkyls
2 ReBs
1 Pyrobast
2 Coffin Purges
2 Shackles
1 FoF
1 Vamp Tutor
1 Lava Dart
1 Echoing Truth
1 Fling

The week Leading up to the Tourney I end up pulling my muscle in my back, so a lot of the tourney is blurry due to the intense pain I was in.

Match 1 UW Oath
Game 1
He wins the Die roll and opts to go 1st.  He ends up mulling to 5, then dropping a tundra and passing the turn.  I go Lotus, mox, island pass.  He drops an orchard and lays an Oath, I see that he has three cards in hand and is tapped out so I brake lotus for Intuition and get AK’s.  I usually won’t do this in an AK mirror but I have the 4th in my hand, and Have FoW.  I AK for three and decided to save my FoW for his draw, bc/ I got Walk and E.E.  He passes I drop Land, Mox, AK for 4 then walk.  Next turn I set EE and Blow it for two, Pass the Turn.  The end of his Turn I Ancestral, then Mystical for Yawg will and he scoops.
Game 2.
He goes first again.  I keep a decent hand with Intuition, Brainstorm and FoW.  We play draw go for a while, I hit a few brainstorms and am able to draw into some drains.  He plays oath with no orchard.  We have a counter war and I win due to ReB.  Next turn I draw Tog and decide to play him bc/ Bt/ moxes and land I have enough mana to leave UU open, I then pass the turn.  He draws and lets me go.  I swing with tog and pass.  The end of turn I intuition, Two my AK’s go to the yard, he tries to play his, I can remove mine with tog, but first I try brainstorming for FoW bc/ I want the tog food, I get FoW and stop his AK and proceed to draw 4.  I only AK’d in this situation bc/ Tog was on the board and I could remove them.  I get mystical, off the AK’s and decide to go for Yawg Will bc/ he only has 2 cards in hand and lost a counter war.  I drop will he scoops.
Record 1-0
Match Count 2-0

Match 1  FCG
Game 1
I win the roll and drop Mox, Lotus, Land and pass the turn.  He sneaks out an early food chain.  I ancestral, then proceed to my turn.  I pass, He tries to play recruiter, I drain, he then goes to pass, I Intuition for AKs and draw cards.  I then Mystcal for Yawg will during upkeep and have a massive will.  I draw into walk on the will turn.  My walk turn isn’t that exciting but it allows me to cunning wish for Echoing truth and bounce his Food Cain back, and duress it away.  He then sneaks a recruiter through, bc I am tapped out and is able to stack his deck.  My next turn I play land and pass the turn.  He plays goblin matron I can drain, but decide not too, bc/ I am holding Mindtwist and have enough mana to twist his whole hand away next turn.  I twist away all of the critters during my turn and have a mana open to brainstorm.  He drops a land attacks me and passes the turn.  I draw into tog and play him.  He draws and passes.  I start swinging with tog.  At this point I have a hand chalked full of counters but no draw spells.  Three turns pass and they go matron, drain, me burn, siege gang, FoW, Matron drain, and Kiki-Jiki drain, then I almost have enough to kill him and he has one block left and he plays a Piledriver, I don’t like this guy, and I am at 1, I have a land and a drain.  I do a blind drain, I have drawn land  5 turns in a row, if I draw business spell I can win.  I top deck a cunning wish and get lava dart.  I dart away his lone skirk prospector and sac a volcanic island to ping him.  I then attack with a lethal Atog.
G2 I SB out my three duress for 2 Shackles and FoF.  He goes first and drops a land and passes the turn.  I go Jet, Emerald, Fetch land.  I pass the turn, he drops another land and plays a tormod’s crypt (this card is a pain in the ass for tog), I cunning wish for Vampiric tutor.  During my upkeep I vamp for tinker, then play a land and tinker out the big guy, now I am not too worried about the crypt.  I swing a couple times and win.
Record 2-0 (4-0)

Match 3 The riddler
Game 1
The third match I am playing a shop deck, I knew this Meta to be heavy shop so I am well prepared for it.  He wins the die roll and drops a shop, vault, sol ring then trisk.  I go land, Mox, Mox and pass.  Its fun not playing blue so I cunning wish at the end of his turn and get vamp.  I then vamp for tinker and bring out the big man.  I am not too worried bc/ I have one FoW and will save it for Dup, or tangle wire.  He cant race the big guy.
Game 2
I keep a Mediocre hand with LoA, Sea, and Duress.  Out of fear of wastelands I opt not to duress 1st turn and choose to wait to brainstorm.  He drops mask 1st turn and I brainstorm for FoW and don’t find it, all I see is Intuition and Brainstorm.  Puts some artifact acceleration and plays a critter and chalice for 1 and passes.  I draw into my useless brainstorm and play my library.  He draws a wasteland and wastes my sea, and flips his guy, I scoop, I can’t race.
Game 3
This game is a battle.  He has a lot of business spells off the bat.  He gets a chalice for 2 out right away, this hurts a lot.  I am able to draw some cards off ancestral.  He tries to play Karn and I FoW.  He then drops a smokestack.  My hand is chalked full of land so I play into his stacks for a while to keep him sacking.  He leaves it set at two and is able to get a crucible out.  Eventually he sacks his stack after I go to no permanents, all this time he is laughing at me for floating mana into my draw step.  I am able to regain a manabase on the board bc/ I drew a ton of land then I rack and ruin his crucible and chalice for two.  He then drops a cap and plays it.  Luckily by now I have tog in my hand.  He grabs, E.E. Titan and sol ring for some reason, he was going to grab cunning wish but to his surprise I run 4 (why not there amazing).  He then wastes a volcanic and tries to play tangle wire, and I force.  I play my underground sea that I was holding on too and drop tog.  By now the graveyard is full of food and I have been holding moxes since there is a chalice for 0.  He draws and passes, I attack for 1, I need one more draw to do it.  He plays a land and passes and asks me if I can kill him and I count it out and swing for the win.
3-0 (6-1)
Game 4
At this point I am tied for the best record and can most likely ID in so we Draw.
Game 5
I ID into the top 8 at this point.

Top 8
RGb Beats
Game 1
I win the die roll and opt to go 1st.  He has RG beats with a splash of black for edicts and duress, so I play against some duals I haven’t seen in a while, Badlands and bayous.  I through down Lotus, Jet and land and sit there thinking, from watching this guy play before I know he’s playing with Kird apes so I decided to be a bad player and mind twist him for 4 on the first turn.  To my delight I grab Taiga, Taiga, Oktubu the damn dirty ape and, River Boa.  I am quite pleased. He drops a forest and says go, I respond buy saying top deck and he s says no it was in his hand.  I play a land and pass.  He tries to drop a Boa and I drain then dump that into intuition.  I grab AK’s bc/ that is what you usually Intuition for.  Then I play a land, and pass, at the end of his turn I AK and draw into ancestral and AK #4.  I play some moxes and AK for 4.  I walk then Ancestral, I get Yawg will and he scoops.
Game2
He goes first and leads with kird ape.  What this match boils down to is me trying very hard not to win.  1st off I gifts and get 2 broken cards.  I have a big yawg will, but do not find a kill, I forget to brainstorm colossus back before tinker, so I lose to Mox Monkey and Kird ape.
Game 3
I go first and am not happy with How I did last game.  I keep a solid hand with 2 fetches, brainstorm and a drain.  I drop a land and pass.  I get Drain online and am able to drain a 2 casting cost creature I uses the accel to draw cards eventually leading to a big will and tinkered out fat guy.  He brought in a lot of hate for tog and wasn’t expecting the big guy.
Record 4-0-2 (8-2)
Top 4 Meandeck Gifts
Game 1
This is a matchup that I have tested against and feel slightly comfortable playing against.  I am prepared for this matchup in the SB and I feel that MD Gifts is very solid but bc/ of the complexity of the deck most ppl cannot play it optimally.  My notes aren’t great for this match bc/ it happen very late in the night.  The MD gifts player had a 2hr Top 8 matchup against Parfait.  I am able to bait his counters and eventually drain a gifts and dump that into Intuition and AK’s.  Basically I out drew him this game and had a massive will in which he scooped to.
Game 2
I side out twist, 1 duress and E.E. for 1 Purge and 2 ReBs.  This game is played out much like the 1st game.  I am able to bait most of his counters to the point where he tries to gifts without counter back up.  I then am able to tinker out the big guy, and walk.  I then swing, duress, and cunning wish for fling and through colossus at him not giving him another turn to get a bounce spell.  I would have never used fling in this match up without knowing what was in his hand.

Finals
It’s almost 11pm and the guy says that he has to get home to his ten yr old son, and asks to split.  Because I am a nice guy I offer the split, he agrees to take the set of FoW’s for second place and some stuff from my binder to make up the $40 dollar difference for the drain.  All and all it was a fun tournament, it was good to play with drains again after trying different archetypes for a while, in my opinion they are the most consistent of the big 4 unrestricted cards (Shops, Drains, Bazaars and Dark Ritual)

One the Deck choices and SB

I used the lone gifts a few times, once in the AK mirror against oath and once against RG beats.  I brought in the shackles against FCG and RG, though it didn’t come up, I felt it would have been a strong card.  It seems better then old man right now, because fish isn’t running null rod anymore.  I did like the Tinker/Colossus, it gives tog an early opps I win factor.  He is also helpful against aggro decks that are usually a tough matchup for tog.  Most ppl don’t expect him in tog.  The extra purge is nice in the gifts matchup, because in my testing it allows you to put one in your deck so you can stack it in intuition if needed.  I wanted to draw the shackles so bad when I brought them in, they seem like they would be fun to use.  I testing there were pretty solid.  I don’t know how good they would be against fish post sb, because of Kyra though.  As for the tournament, the meta was very random, but for the most part I played some of the best players there piloting decent decks, Oath, The Riddler, FCG, and Gifts.  Even RG beats can be a hard matchup for Tog at times (plus he ran 4 ReBs and 1 pyro in the SB).  The trading was great and the people were cool.  I got a lot of neat foil stuff, all and all my return to magic in the south was a fun time.

Gifts Costs the same as deep analysis, and is cast at instant speed, as I have been saying I run one copy of gifts as a blue instant tutor.  I feel that deep analysis is too slow for the current Environment as it costs 4 and is a sorcery, the main problem is that it is a sorcery.  At the very least you will get two good cards off gifts.  I often end up SB out Deeps bc/ they are only good in the control mirror.  When you face lots of shop, and random aggro they seem uneeded.  The only card I would consider over gifts is FoF, but I like keeping that in the SB.  In my opinion Gifts is too broken not to run as a 1 of in just about any blue drain deck.

As what I was trying to say before, Tog is not a gifts deck nor will it be.  Its main focus is to draw off AK's.  But gifts as a one of in the deck isnt a bad choice.  I used it to fill the deep analysis slot.  The main focus of tog is not to cast gifts and win, gifts is just another tutor for tog.  At this point I see no reason that Tog cant run one gifts.  Most slaver builds are running one gifts, but thier main focus is drawing off TFK.  They are not gifts decks.  If tog were built to be a gifts deck it would run 1-2 more gifts and recoup, taking up more slots than I would want to add.  As with Tog I will usually draw into a cunning wish some time in the game, It's hard not too with 4 in the deck.  Here s the list I won the Mana Drain with:

Tog 2k5

Mana 23
3 Polluted Delta’s
3 Flooded Strand
3 Underground Sea
3 Volcanic Island
3 Island
1 LoA
5 Moxen
1 Lotus
1 Sol Ring

Draw/Tutor 19
1 Ancestral
4 Brainstorm
4 AK’s
3 Intuition
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Gifts Ungiven
4 Cunning Wish

Distruption 11
4 FoW
4 Drains
3 Duress

Utility 1
E.E.

Broken Stuff 4
1 Mindtwist (In deck Bc/ of random Meta, which had lots of random Aggro)
1 Yawg Will
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker

Big Guys
1 Tog
1 Colossus

SB:
2 RnR
1 Hurkyls
2 ReBs
1 Pyrobast
2 Coffin Purges
2 Shackles
1 FoF
1 Vamp Tutor
1 Lava Dart
1 Echoing Truth
1 Fling

If the meta wasn't so random I probably wouldn't have ran twist.  With the popularity of gifts decks and the # of misdirections floating around can make it a bad call at times.  I ll try to get a tourney report up later today.

I dont see the reason why you wouldn't play 1 copy of gifts in tog, at the very least it gives you 2 good cards.  I ve gifted to get a cunning wish last weekend.  I  probably wouldnt play recoup, because I can usually get the will or tinker off the gifts pile.  I would go something like mystical, demonic, cunning, something good (lotus, recall most likely).  I run Vamp in the sb so I can usually get what I want.  The problem is I dont know what you would want to cut for recoup, yes its a strong card but you would have to remove something else.  Togs main plan is to still draw cards off AK's, gifts just gives you a better secondary draw engine than Deep Analysis.

I dont run the recoup in tog, with only one gifts i doesnt make sense.  Your primary draw engine is still intuition/ak.  I just feel the Deep back up is too slow for the environment right now.  It is in my personal opinion that every deck with mana drain should have at least one gifts, it is too broken not too.  When I gifted I used it to set up will or get two broken cards.  Usually Demonic, Mystical, Timewalk, or Ancestral is a good choice.  Or you can add lotus, if you need the accel and you have played one of the three.  With 4 cunnings in the deck and 1 vamp in the board, cunning can join the list to get you that broken sorcery.  And to those who say you dont need the Colosus, tinker can happen early and let you cheat a win.  I did that many times.  The big guy is good at getting around hate.  I played two decks that had at least 4 rebs in the board.

I just won a mana drain this weekend, with using gifts in tog.  Every deck that runs mana drains should have at least 1 Gifts in it.  I will do a tournament right up on it sometime today or tommorrow, when I get the time.  Basically all I did was cut the deep analysis for 1 gifts, 1 tinker, and cut 1 tog for colosus.  I kept the Intuition AK engine because tog abuses that more so than any other deck, that is why I never worry too much about the ak mirrors.
27  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Proxy Poll on: July 16, 2005, 06:06:02 am
I think that 5-10 proxies is fair.  Just like any other format in magic you have to make some sort of commitment to intially venture into it.  With the proxy system, be it Blue duals, FoW and fectlands.  It is not as if I am advocating that ppl go out and purchase power and drains.  If more proxies are needed place a tax on them, $2 for each proxy beyond 10, I will give props for the guy who proxies his whole deck @ 100 extra cost.

I have dont some play testing with this deck on MWS and it seems pretty solid.  Top is almost like the artifact equivalent to brainstorm.  The changes I made, were basically the same that were recommended all ready in this thread:

-1 Will
-1 Balance
-1 swords
-1 consultation

+2 Welders
+1 Rack n Ruin
+1 Engineered Explosives

When I built the deck I didn't realize that I forgot to put consultation in the deck.  I am going to add it tonight and see if I like it.

I played against Ultima online when He was playing some version of GAT.  We played a few games and most were decided by an active top.  Titan wrecked his multi color manabase.  Top needs to be a four of in the deck.  I did like how top enable me to draw ReB for the turn then top into the ruby that I had underneath it.  Even when you can't reshuffle digging a card deeper during your upkeep is pretty key to grab a lock component or big man.  I will probably cut twister, bc/ the times when I have it could easily be top or something else, against combo I am always afraid to refill their hand and the same goes for control.  The E.E. has proven to be pretty solid.  Being able to cast it off shop for whatever, you need is pretty good.  The only matchup that it can be a dead draw against is null rod based decks.  But the flexibility of being creature, enchantment and artifact removal makes it hard to take out of the deck.  The welders have been useful, but I feel that two is plenty.  Most of the time you don't need them to win anyway.  I haven't used the md R'n'R yet, but I feel its inclusion is necessary.  I played one U/R fish player, he got down a turn three null rod, but I had top active in the first two turns and had his mana base beaten down by crucible strip/waste, and had a Juggy on the board.  The testing results against combo have been good.  4 MD chalices usually beat combo.  Post SB is usually a good matchup as well.  So far I have played against MD SX(the deck usually dies to itself, and chalice for 1, 0, Death Long, about the same,Chalice and belcher which was more resilient then the other two, but chalice was usually enough to slow them down).  I havent found anyone playing gifts to test the deck yet so I do not know how it will do against probably the most popular deck in the format right now.  From what I have heard from Pheldegraph, the maker of the claw, it is a hard matchup.  But the changes I will try later will be:
-1 Twister
-1 R'n'R or E.E.

+1 Top
+1 Demonic consultation

Hopefully I will find time to try these tonight.  Another note, Orb of dreams has been good in the sideboard for added help against combo, it is usually enough to end the game.

One of my old teamates use to play a mono-brown Worker staff deck in a null rod heavy environment.  One of the SB options he used to use was culling Scales.  If your worried about null rod you can try it out.  Its not great but it works ok, your choices for artifact removal are slim with a mono brown list.
30  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: The State of Vintage: Has Vintage Bled Out the Casual Players? on: July 05, 2005, 04:07:49 pm
I think one thing that we may be missing out on here is the new formats for casaul players.  It is my belief that Type 4 and 5-color magic has attracted more of the casaul croud.  Even though I dont play it, it would seem that a lot of the old cards you cant play in vintage are somewhat viable in 5color.  On the subject of budget decks, didnt WTF and goblins take home lotus at major events this year?  I think that they are good decks, though they do have some bad matchups but then what deck has a great matchup against everything?
