1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Updating Vengeur Masqué to 2010 on: March 02, 2010, 11:40:20 am
It's been a very long time for me playing Vintage (or magic at all for that matter). Next week I'm going to play in a small tournament just for old times sake. I know which deck type I'm going to play: Vengeur Masqué . But I can't seem to find an updated list anywhere. Last list is one of Carl Devos from May 2008:

4 Birds of Paradise
1 Quirion Ranger
4 Survival of the Fittest

1 Anger
3 Magus of the Moon
1 Squee, Goblin Nabob

4 Faerie Macabre

1 Ancestral Recall
4 Brainstorm
4 Force of Will
1 Gilded Drake
1 Time Walk
3 Volrath's Shapeshifter
1 Waterfront Bouncer

1 Black Lotus
4 Illusionary Mask
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
4 Phyrexian Dreadnought

2 Forest
4 Tropical Island
4 Taiga
2 Wooded Foothills
3 Windswept Heath

Sideboard:
1 Goblin Sharpshooter
4 Leyline of the Void
1 Pyroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast
4 Tarmogoyf
2 Viashino Heretic
2 Waterfront Bouncer

I'd obviously need to adjust the list to the current b&r list. So the first obvious cut is 3 brainstorm and add 1 ponder. Also cut 3 heath for 3 Misty Rainforest. I like Magus main. But I don't think I'll need 4 Faerie Macabre main, that was probably a meta call.

So I have 7 slots main to play with. Any ideas on what should be included? Some things you have to warn me about?

I own this:

Not the best beta set, but it will do. Have almost all other playables as well.

Thinking about arcane denial and its usability, I started thinking about including it in Oath.

I've been trying Arcane Denial in Oath as soon as I saw this thread. It's working great so far. The ability to draw cards or counter a key spell to take one more swing is great. But an Oath list might fit better in a different thread.

I'm not that fond of ManaMorphose in your list. Thirst for knowledge together with Arcane Denial is also questionable. I'd rather use Impulse in that spot. This is the decklist I've been using, adjusted by the latest ICBM build:

// Mana
1 Strip Mine
3 Wasteland
4 Forbidden Orchard
2 Tropical Island
2 Underground Sea
3 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
1 Island
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Black Lotus

// Creatures
1 Hellkite Overlord
1 Akroma

// Spells
4 Impulse
4 Force of Will
3 Arcane Denial
4 Negate
2 Misdirection
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Wipe Away

4 Oath of Druids
1 Gaea's Blessing

1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor

1 Scroll Rack
4 Chalice of the Void

I know at least that, aside from Deglamer, the sideboard is pretty awful. Deglamer is mainly for Chalices because Chalice at 0,1, and 2 really hurt this deck.

How is Deglamer helping against a chalice for 2? If anything what you are doing is returning their chalice of 0 and 1 in their deck so they can play it again lategame at 2. What's wrong with oxidize / naturalize?

How much do you combo with altar and pact? Why is this better than simply oathing and beating with angels or bouncing your opponents board with Tidespout Tyrant. You have 4 dead cards in this deck if you're not able to oath a creature.

You know why you are winning on MWS? Not because it's good but because it's a rogue deck and nobody is used to play against it. I mean, you don't even play any basic land...
5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: How strict do you play when playing serious decks with friends? on: August 11, 2008, 12:58:34 pm
Sloppy playtesting leads to sloppy play.  No takebacks, ever, is the way I rock it.
Bullseye!

When you lose in playtesting because of a dumb mistake you stay up all night kicking yourself for it and you do not make it again.

If you are allowed a take back and then win, then you soon forget you ever made the mistake and are doomed to repeat history!

Why are takebacks always considered on mistakes. We do lots of takebacks, but we do it to see how the situation will evolve differently. Some nuances are tested like this. If we have a difficult choice we usually drop our hand on the table and work out the best plays with more than 2 people. It's interesting to see other peoples strategy. This is one of the reasons why I love to see different people play with my deck and see all of their plays. Why do they play card x while I would play y?
6  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: The use of faerie macabre on: August 04, 2008, 07:27:06 am
No, cause it is still in your hand when selecting targets.

Quote from: SCG ask the judge
Q: Faerie Macabre's ability indicates that you discard it to remove two cards from a graveyard. Is it possible to use the ability to remove another card and itself?

A: No. When you play this ability, the card has not yet left your hand when you choose the targeted cards in a graveyard. When you play a spell or ability, you choose all targets before you pay any costs. Keep in mind that you can target up to two target cards, so you can choose to target zero or one cards in a graveyard. Also, these two cards do not have to be in the same graveyard.

I though chains & bob doesn't jive because Bob does not" draw".  It's a reveal instead.

Yes, and that's why my own draw engine is unaffected. I don't see the problem you have.
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Hidden treasures for Vintage (deck ideas, good cards, combos)? on: February 17, 2008, 08:54:42 am
It's actually not because Candelabra needs to be tapped to use (it's from the old days of Mono Artifact, which means once per turn, which is eratta'ed to add a TAP to the cost).

Damn the eratta!!! Sad
It appears that a "tap" cost has been added to the Oracle text. Hmmm, I wonder if that would fall under "power level eratta" (which may be revoked someday)? It certainly explains why Candelabra hardly ever gets played.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

It's not errata. It has always been that way. Mono artifacts always tapped to indicate that they where used.

I would love to see Chains of Mephistopheles get some more action.

Dark Confidant+Chains is probably the best you can do with any sort of interaction these days.

I'm using Confidant + Chains right now. It's a blast. I also have counterbalance + top which is great against almost every deck.

hoppefully, the whole list need to be refont with goyf.
on my first list (inspired from the starcity list, but far from identical) my goyf are always 4/5 and often 5/6 (the real use of dreadnaugt in my deck is to give +2/+2 to my goyf  Wink ) and I even play some broken enchantement so 6/7 is possible (secret tech in progress  Wink)

So you have a 2 card combo for 2G to get a 4/5 (maybe a 5/6), whilst I have a 2 card combo of 1U and have a 12/12 trample. You will have to attack 4 times with goyf (if not more) giving your opponent time to find a solution or win. You'll have to make sure you don't lose in those turns while I'm sitting at the bar drinking a beer to celebrate another round won. Yes, goyf is better against workshops, but destroying your own manabase to play goyf is not.

I searched our team forums for example hands to illustrate the problem:

Mox Ruby
Flooded Strand
Strip Mine
Dark Confidant
Tarmogoyf
Brainstorm
Phyrexian Dreadnought

You have to fetch sea and play confidant and draw a green source before goyf can start the beating.

Duress
Duress
Polluted Delta
Tropical Island
Mox Emerald
Dark Confidant
Counterbalance

1st turn Duress, 2nd turn Confidant. If I didn't play the Tropical Island I would have been able to duress a second time before playing the confidant, probably winning the game in the process.

Hands like these happened all the time. I worked hard to get the manabase right to support 3 colors, but it just wasn't worth it. (Just so you know: ponder helped a lot with the 3 color manabase)

Maybe it's a style of playing (or the secret enchantment tech Wink). But I never liked Tarmogoyf in testing. In fact I find it's easier to beat with Dark Confidant using the card advantage engine than beating with Tarmogoyf. But hey if it works for you, then you should keep them of course. You're probably doing something right where I'm doing something wrong.

Quote from: astre
really need to try counterbalance also, as i already play top+ some trinket... how many do you play in your builds for a respectable effect?
2 tops, 2 counterbalance. Maybe 1 top is enough if you play trinket mages, but that build sounds awfully slow.

Quote from: Phele
But Counterbalance has been a nice tool in testing so far. I don't like it in the maindeck, as we have quite a few Workshop decks around. But against R/G, Oath, GAT, Long it can be golden. So my sideboard looks like that in the moment with my maindeck staying almost the same just - 1 Vodalian Illusionist, + 1 Senseis Top

Yes, counterbalance is not very good against workhops. It's not completely dead if they play a lot of spheres, and you can still counter their acceleration. But that's not what you want to do be doing against workshops decks.

I like the fact of playing counterbalance in the side. It never occurred to me to try that. It's only 3 slots and you can side it in against more than half the field.

Right now I'm still playing a darkblast against other confidants and stuff like welder and gorilla shaman. It's also great to dredge the crap you gathered with top. I'm trying the chains of mephistopheles too. It shouldn't be too bad to lose brainstorm with 2 tops maindeck.

Anyway, this is getting way too long and off-topic for a tournament report. I'll save some for a thread on the subject.

Eddie from Belgium is trying out the Top/Counterbalance combo with some success, and in the moment I am trying this out at least in the sideboard as well. Could help against many decks just packed with one and two mana spells - as my deck is.

That is correct. I've played against the G/R beats deck from SCG chicage in a tournament. It was a joke with counterbalance and top. I wasn't able to counter magus of the moon, but I didn't care with all the basic lands. Kira was also great from the side: Stingscourger, Hooligan and seal? No problem for kira. Combine that with the counterbalance and you have one big control package.

I can understand why people wouldn't like it in this deck. It's a little slower. But you have a better mid-lategame. I've tried a lot of things and counterbalance-top is great for me.

Quote from: astre
For next year, i will try something else and add some tarmogoyf in my list probably droping red.

I don't like goyf here. It's only a 3/4, sometimes a 4/5. Goyfs don't add enough pressure in this deck, it doesn't work the same way as GAT plays goyfs.

I loved season 1 and 2, but 3 was so so. Still, it get's more interesting at the end of season 3.

I've never seen the original BSG though. But from the sound of it, it's totally different.

I stand corrected. I thought it would be the mask deck with goyfs. We've tried that over here and it never seemed to work. Mad props to ICBM. The decks looks interesting to say the least.

About people complaining about coming a few mana short and losing to mana denial: I had to hear that al day long.

Same here. I play strip, 3 waste, 4 stifle and trickbind. Part of the strategy is the mana denial plan against certain decks (GAT, Empty Gush, ...). And they still complain you get lucky they didn't draw another mana source to execute their play and all of their topdecks sucked. Trust me, I will know if my opponents topdecks suck. Only 1 of my opponents had reasons to complain in a game.

We've been trying out proxy events here in Belgium, and the result is not that good. We get 15-ish people, with around 8 from our own crew to our events. Compare this to another vintage tournament with same prize structure and higher entrance cost without proxies: they get 40-ish people.

I'm not sure what causes this. We are all full powered, but none of us mind proxies. Maybe 3 people out of 15 actually use proxies. We just can't seem to get other people to try it out. Now even the bigger Legacy crowd.

It looks like a typical rebacked CE card. The centering is a bit off to the left and the corners are not how they supposed to be. Try putting it next to a real card against a strong light.

E.g.: To the left a real beta jet, to the right a fake ruby

The fact that it doesn't 'feel right' is probably the glue that didn't spread very well between the cards.

28  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Deck Discussion] Repeal Gifts on: January 25, 2007, 01:07:09 am
I cut a land for Mana Vault because I was always comfortable running 15 land + 10 artifact mana with traditional meandeck gifts. Really, the cut for mana vault in terms of going from MDGifts to this list is Library of Alexandria. I can't cut library though, as it is too powerful with many different ways to refill my hand.

I had success in one tournament only running the 15 land and I know some others have as well, for instance, BrassMan ran 14 lands at Gencon 2005 -- a field INFESTED with stax. He did ok I hear.

His land count is 15 right now, so if you cut a land, you'd only have 14 left. That's not enough if you ask me. I've been running 15 land for a long time, and I'm not comfortable with cutting any.

All they need is FoW and Mystical and Vintage is pretty good to go.

You forgot Demonic Tutor Wink

Also, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Lotus Petal, Tolarian Academy, and a ton of other restricted stuff.

We don't need a reprint for pimping reasons if it's available in Beta.
