I know I've debated this tech with you before but I think you've latched onto something there with ensnaring bridge and welder.

Seriously is Kevin Poenisch's sideboard just there to troll the SMIP podcast statistics? If so even more props to that man right there!
3  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Italian Mana Drains on: July 02, 2015, 02:39:49 am
Italian Legends is my downfall. I prefer English cards so that I never have to worry about people knowing what a card does (or at least having an idea) but the art looks so much nicer on the Italian printings.

All good an English chain is just as unreadable as an Italian chains Smile
4  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / T8 @ HobbyMaster NZ Vintage 11/23/14 - 18 Players on: November 23, 2014, 02:52:56 am
So I played yesterday 18 man 75 proxy event, pretty much the same list I 3-1'd the daily with last weekend, changed from the 2 caverns to 2 more factories and the 2 SoFI in the SB become batterskulls (again).

http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/vintage-daily-2014-11-16#decklists (I'm AlphaQnz online)

4 Ancient Tomb
4 Mishra's Factory
4 Mishra's Workshop
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
4 Wasteland
1 Duplicant
1 Karn, Silver Golem
4 Kuldotha Forgemaster
4 Lodestone Golem
2 Phyrexian Metamorph
3 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Steel Hellkite
1 Sundering Titan
1 Wurmcoil Engine
4 Chalice of the Void
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring
4 Sphere of Resistance
4 Tangle Wire
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Trinisphere

1 Duplicant
3 Crucible of Worlds
4 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Batterskull
3 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
2 Tormod's Crypt

R1 - Alan on Fatestitcher dredge, G1 usual G1 blow out, G2 I start with a T1 cage which gets claimed, I have Tabernacle & I get a forgemaster in play however he manages to get all 4 Ichorid's in play and fatestitcher taps that down to deal exacties when I could have fetched a tormods crypt to leave him with 3 cards in his library if I could have untapped.
0-1 (0-2)

R2 - Dan on Metalworker MUD, G1 I T1 Chalice and sphere him and grind him out & have a revoker naming metalworker and Wurmcoil seals the deal. G2 on the play becomes a mana denial game with trading wastelands and strip mines with me holding off till T5 to play my first workshop when I windmill slam the newly drawn crucible. 4 Turns later he has zero lands and 3 moxes in play when I land hellkite, he responds with metamorph and then concedes when I duplicant his hellkite before attacking
1-1 (2-2)

R3 - Ryan on white trash, Ryan rolled over my dredge opponent in R2 with multiple answers G1 and G2. He did comment in testing he'd not be able to beat shops... Well G1 he wins the roll and proceeds to bury me with chalice zero, a 2/2 bear and mindsensor and 3 of his 4 wastelands  (I'd note at this time I'm playing zero proxies with BB power) which was slightly amusing to Ryan and others to watch the proxied trash deck roll over the $15K deck..... G2 I land sphere T1 and trisphere T2 (protecting my workshop) and then put him into the ground with wires and metamorph'd wires. G3 on the draw I lodestone after lodestone and then get him into a chalice lock after duplicanting his mindsensor to remove the flyer I can't deal with.
2-1 (6-3)

R4 - Will on UR delver, first time playing vintage 16 year old. Has won PTQ and T8'd a GP so generally a good player. I win the roll, he mulls to 5, I put a T1 Lodestone on the stack, he thinks and lets it resolve, I then chalice 0. His turn he does nothing,,,, he's kept a no lander vs me! I proceed to put forgemaster on the stack and he says "I'm going to force that" and I reply "how are you going to pay the 1" and point at the lodestone... he grabs my lodestone and reads then starts scooping his cards up.....
G2 he lets my thorn resolve then forces paying 1 for my chalice 1 and then lands a pyro. I figure at this time this game is going to run away from me when I top deck lodestone which resolves, I then proceed to land threat after threat after threat while he struggles on 2 lands attempting to kill things with a solo pyro which gets given chump blocking duty soon enough, this game lasts much longer than the final board state suggests but I beat him to death with 2 forgemasters seeing as I drawn my titan & wurmcoil somewhere along the way and couldn't quite hard cast either of them!
3-1 (8-3)

R5 - Toby playing the 74 card mirror (he copied my list from the daily)! Toby has got into legacy in the last year or so and was giving vintage a nudge as proxies allow him too. Toby and I play at the same store and are locked for T8 if we ID so we shake hands than then he asks to play. In retrospect I was likely locked for T8 at 3-2 anyway so I should have played to get the top seed as being on the play for me is so important.
G1 I win the roll and after some time we're throwing haymakers at each other and I get Wurmcoil online, Toby responds with his own Wurmcoil, I then get forgemaster online and sack my wurmcoil (tokens, value!) to it to fetch duplicant to remove his wurmcoil. He activates his forgemaster in response and gets revoker to shut off my forgemaster (he had to sack his) and in a couple turns later I land hellkite and end the game with the pumping flyer.
G2 he opens on mox mox wasteland chalice 0, I go T1 crucible, T2 wire.... a few turns later I land hellkite and blow up his moxes and its game over.... damnit I knew should have played!
3-1-1 (10-3)

T8 - Chris playing Oath, Chris is a local gaming celeb as he owns Path of Exile and almost as big a fan of vintage as me! We have a history, this is the 3rd time we've met in T8's, currently 0-2 to him. He's on the play as the 3rd seed.
G1 we start off pretty normal, I land a couple spheres, a revoker on Black Lotus (Which he played without using T1), 2 factories and then get a lodestone into play. He’s not doing much aside from cantriping and I figure he’s looking for answers as he’s played BUG gush control at the last few events when he taps 4 mana and drops oath into play. I get rocked back in my chair here, holy heck, he’s on oath? I swing in and put him down to 9, hard cast Sundering Titan blowing up his lands and am forced to pass back the turn and the 7/7 flying demon shows up. Chris does the math and works out he prob needs to draw 7 to get an answer as he’s on 9 and is looking at 18 points of damage including the damn titan which stomps his GB. He draws and scoops em up after getting nothing.
G2 he has the dreaded orchard mox oath opener, I top deck the cage!! I figure he’s got force so I figure revoker blew him out in G1 & I wonder if he’ll fear it again and put it on the stack first, he thinks and says “force” and then “this the first time all day I’ve had the nut opener, orchard, oath and FoW backup”, I respond by putting cage on the stack….. he looks at his 2 remaining cards and says “wow that makes this hand look a lot worse”. 2-3 turns go by, I get 2 sphere’s into play but cannot draw a damn threat! Needless to say Chris gets up to 3 mana and claims my cage and the big fellow turns up….. 2 attack phases later I’m scooping them up.
G3, on the play, T1 Mana crypt, sphere, cage, T2 (lose roll) sphere, T3 metamorph on the cage! BOOYA take that oath! I then proceed to land revoker naming lotus and (lose roll) duplicant which I cast as a 2/4 and waste a land or 2. I’m on 12, he’s on 14… both on a 4 turn clock however I need to lose 4 dice rolls for mine to kick in. We have an odds always hurt rule…. I roll a 1 (9-10), I roll a 5 (6-6), I roll a 5 (3-2) and we get to the last upkeep and his words are “this is going to be real dirty if that rolls an odd number” and I roll a 1……. I lost a game, match and T4 spot to my own crypt after losing 6 out of 8 rolls in a game when I opponent never even played a spell. As an aside I mentioned I’ve played Chris twice before in T8’s? One was at GP Auckland 2012 and I lost then when he hurkyl’s in his upkeep in response to a tangle wire trigger and I just happened to put the mana crypt I was holding into play through without thought when I didn’t need it and got killed by it and the other time was when in G3 I T1 doomsday’d and lost cause I played the U Sea in my hand and not the fetch leaving me without enough mana to cast my pass the turn stack with FoW backup….
3-2-1 (11-5) but morally 12-4!

Props:
Vintage for the first time since March!
The 18 players who came out and played with us, its exams time so several students couldn’t make it
The 8 (8!) players who turned up with zero proxies just because they could 
Finishing my beta P10 set!

Slops:
Mana crypt
The dice
The payout of the store, they pay out in credit which is all good however they took $60 out of the pool and then also make a profit on the credit sales which means they effectively took $150 out of the $450 in entries…..

And because every post is better with a pic here’s my babies

Thanks for reading

I'll try and join the 6:30 PST event, the 11:30 event fired today 28 participants! Wooot!

Did the 6:30 fire? I was very happy to 3-1 the early one after hitting dredge R1 AND R2!

7  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: Beating delver with shops on: November 14, 2014, 09:21:00 pm
Adrian,

Dismember is good in MUD and it only needs to worry about Misdi. It can also be used to shrink Griselbro'.

Maze of Ith takes care of flying Delver & Griselbro'. Note that Delver & Oath only run 1 Strip Mine at best. I'm pretty certain that you can unsleeve your Arenas.

There is something about Silent Arbiter that is appealing to me. It costs only 4 and it doesn't care about Dack and helps against Dredge too. Whether or not it is the answer you are after to beat Delver? I'm less sure.

Rachet Bomb has been noted and is a solid answer. Be smart about it and don't over-extend unless necessary, ... It is obviouly stronger when paired with Buried Ruin.

I'm personally gonna opt for consistent aggro decks with 4 Black Vise if too many people start durdling around with Gush & Cruise in Australia. In that category, I really like Affinity and James Mackay Aggro Mud style. Strong and reliable decks.

PS: Oh!... and Thespian Stage & Dark Depth performed very well in MUD. Ask Josh Archer who won the Brisbane League with it. See videos here (Remember: UR Delver, Oath and Dredge don't play Wasteland!)

All good points Thomas, I used to run 3 mazes actually as anti trygon and BSC as well. I might have to investigate this some more. We have vintage next Saturday and I'm expecting delver to be everywhere.

8  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: Beating delver with shops on: November 14, 2014, 02:39:44 am
I like the arrow's idea, that was in a vintage champs T8 a couple years ago IIRC.

I had a moment of enlightenment, I think Sword of Fire and Ice might be exactly what I need. I'm going to test it this weekend!
9  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Beating Delver With Shops on: November 13, 2014, 07:42:27 pm
Hi All,

Having a small amount of trouble with beating Delver (and Dack) of late.  The fact that a single T1 Delver can go the whole distance has made me lay down my Terra Nova and move across to Martello/Forgemaster Shops.  At the same time I need to be able to fight Oath and Dredge.  I'm currently testing Arena in my SB, I've brought it in 3 times and only seen it once when it wasn't that good, it removed their Delver which was great but as soon as they got Pyro down it was useless as they just made a token and got to select it.

I'm currently running the following:

1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mana Crypt
4 Mishra's Workshop
1 Sol Ring
1 Wurmcoil Engine
4 Ancient Tomb
2 Cavern of Souls
4 Sphere of Resistance
1 Steel Hellkite
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Strip Mine
4 Kuldotha Forgemaster
4 Lodestone Golem
4 Chalice of the Void
2 Phyrexian Metamorph
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Trinisphere
1 Sundering Titan
1 Duplicant
2 Mishra's Factory
4 Wasteland
1 Karn, Silver Golem
3 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Tangle Wire

1 Witchbane Orb
2 Tormod's Crypt
3 Crucible of Worlds
2 Arena
3 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
4 Grafdigger's Cage

What are people's thoughts on tools that can fight Delver/Pyro at the same time as not weakening me vs. Dredge and oath?

Fired on time with 20 in queue. Definitely good news.

Agreed. One of my kiwi mates was your round 1 opp, sounds like you rolled right over him. I saw Rich got you round 3, did you win round 4?

3:30 in what timezone?
MTGO times are PST.

1 hour 20 minutes to go and there's already 5 registered so there's a good chance this will fire!

13  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Beating Pyromancer in KTK on: November 05, 2014, 02:34:20 am
So, I notice that with treasure cruise in the mix, new pyromancer builds are well positioned to overwhelm the competition with card advantage (and tokens). What are your favorite metagame adjustments to beat these decks?

14  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: DCI Suspended Players & Unsanctioned Vintage Events on: November 03, 2014, 06:33:32 pm
I help arrange vintage events both sanctioned and non-sanctioned here in NZ, when we had the first all proxy event 2 years ago there was a known vintage player who was serving out a suspension who announced on his FB he'd be attending our event.

I had someone reach out to him on the quiet and tell him he wouldn't be allowed to play due to his suspension & he didn't travel to the event. I later found out that several people who I'd have expected to turn up didn't because they thought he was going to be there and didn't want to be paired vs him. I've always felt I made the wrong decision by trying to handle this quietly, I should have very publicly announced that people currently serving suspensions from the DCI would not be allowed to enter my event (at that time there was exactly 1 suspended player from NZ) & I applaud your public stance.

Maybe we can get some of those pesky Kiwi’s to come over next year 

I had flights booked back in May / June when I talked to you about the date but my client decided that the same weekend would be a great weekend to roll out their new solution so I had to cancel them about a month ago. That solution ended up failing it's go/no go meeting on Wednesday so I could have bloodily well gone!

Still muttering about that one. Unlikely to be there next year either as I've been selected to race at for NZ at the Duathlon World Champs in Adelaide on the 14th-18th Oct so unless it happens to be exactly the weekend before or after I'm not jumping the ditch twice in a month.

Round 6: John Grudzina – 4c Delver
We get selected for a feature match, even though it was not on camera, and nobody was watching, so it wasn’t really “featured” in any way.

I'm pretty sure this was my fault, I was nagging the people in the stream to put shops and specifically you on camera round 4-5-6. Indie told me during round 5 if you won you'd be selected but then Randy wanted Joel so that was the video match hence being the backup match. I was also hopeful that you'd put your R9 on but sadly no. I'm a shops player and a fan of your grindy play / deck style. As someone who plays a bit online, we need a solution for that %$&# Dack Fayden, he's EVERYWHERE!

Monday morning for me, I have work 4 hours after this starts.
19  Eternal Formats / Online Tournaments / Re: TMD MTGO Open on: October 09, 2014, 01:43:23 pm
I don't think people are seeing this, I've been checking TMD quite often and just saw the topic. I'm planning to join this one, just waiting for Khans to be released in MODO, try some things out before finalizing my deck list.

Is there a minimum number of players for this event?

No, but I'm actually considering cancelling the event, since nobody has preregistered, and there doesn't seem to be much interest overall. I think I've seen about 10 players express interest, which is hardly enough to justify running this event.

I'll be editing the next episode of Everyday Eternal tonight - I'll toss in a mention Very Happy

Sam well done. You drew my attention too this. This is at 3am local time in my country but I will still be there, I will be registering soon & even if I don't play due to life getting in the way (unlikely at 3am!) I'll be happy for my 20 tix to go too a good cause.

To be fair, the Pyromancer Ascensions are some kind of a joke that I don't get.

I'm guessing it's a reference to the tales from the drinking bracket cast where "Of course it's young pyromancer not pyromancer acensions because he doesn't have a brain injury" or something like that?

Nether Void.

When I returned to the game in 2011 my first purchuses were, Lotus, Ancestral, 3 Nether Voids. In that order. I still have a netherpox deck I bust out once in a while to make people hate life.

25  Eternal Formats / Ritual-Based Combo / Re: Doomsday (the Ritual approach) on: March 05, 2014, 02:50:22 pm
Tendrils is actually not difficult to pull off in Doomsday.  A lot of times, when I am using Lab Man, if I had to I could quickly come up with a Tendrils kill that wins on the spot too.

Yes I agree, I actually killed several times with tendrils doomsday piles in this event. I think the final result of games won was 4 Beacon, 2 Tendrils and 5 gush storms (no doomsday cast) in a 5 round + Quarters / Semis.
26  Eternal Formats / Ritual-Based Combo / Re: Doomsday (the Ritual approach) on: March 05, 2014, 01:32:23 am
I'm also curious as to why you went with the old school Beacon kill. If you're worried about Abrupt Decay, Lightning Bolt, etc. on Lab Maniac, running Thoughtseize makes more sense than Xantid Swarm.

Is Pyroclasm better than Toxic Deluge in a deck running four Dark Ritual?

I'll just leave this IRC log here... Hola to my peps in #motl and #tmd for helping with this list. Including Jeek who is credited with the Beacon pile in 2004?

09:41 < KIP_NZ> LemonWork: ping
09:42 < LemonWork> yo KIP_NZ
09:42 < KIP_NZ> LemonWork: vintage this weekend. I feel like being a dick. What should I play?
09:42 < KIP_NZ> It's unlimited proxy btw
09:43 < LemonWork> unlimited proxies = everybody wants to have fun and play power
09:43 < LemonWork> so play something with null rod
09:43 < LemonWork> maybe null rod + chalice
09:43 < LemonWork> the stackiest of stax decks
09:43 < LemonWork> just play stax
09:46 < KIP_NZ> yer I could
09:46 < KIP_NZ> I was thinking more dickish
09:46 < KIP_NZ> doomsday
09:46 < KIP_NZ> or dragon
09:46 < LemonWork> nah
09:46 < KIP_NZ> or something like that
09:46 < LemonWork> i don't t hink those are dickish decks
09:49 < KIP_NZ> oh I want to play something stupid
09:49 < KIP_NZ> not be a dick to people
09:49 < KIP_NZ> else I'd play 13 sphere 4 null rod 4 pithing needle. dec
09:50 < LemonWork> oh
09:50 < LemonWork> play doomsday
09:50 < LemonWork> but fuck lab man
09:50 < LemonWork> do it with the old kill
09:50 < LemonWork> ancestral recall, black lotus, dark ritual, mind's desire, beacon of destruction
10:02 < KIP_NZ> !beacon of destr
10:02 < Datatog> Beacon of Destruction {3RR} |Instant| Beacon of Destruction deals 5 damage to target creature or player. Shuffle Beacon of Destruction into its owner's library. <B7> 10E-R,5DN-R
10:03 < KIP_NZ> how do you do enough damage with that?
10:04 < KIP_NZ> cause mind's desire allows you to cast it once
10:04 < KIP_NZ> oh shit it's an instant
10:04 < KIP_NZ> so you can resolve it between storm triggers
10:04 < KIP_NZ> LOLOL
10:37 < KIP_NZ> LemonWork: I think it's going to be doomsday
10:47 < LemonWork> good planj
10:48 < LemonWork> you gonna use that sweet old pile?
10:48 < LemonWork> or labman lol
10:48 < LemonWork> if you do that you also get to natural storm into  mind's desire
10:49 < KIP_NZ> looking for a non-labman pile
10:52 < LemonWork> KIP_NZ: you could go for tendrils piles
10:52 < LemonWork> or just do the hilarious beacon of destruction pile
10:52 < LemonWork> and mind's desire is broken anyway
10:53 < KIP_NZ> LemonWork: yer tendril's = hard
10:59 < LemonWork> you usually want a gush tendrils backup plan in those decks anyway
10:59 < LemonWork> i think tendrils shouldn't be too hard
11:01 < LemonWork> ancestral recall, black lotus, LED, yawgwill, then just have a tutor or gitaxian probe or ponder in your hand Very Happy
11:01 < LemonWork> oh wait i keep forgetting about gush
11:01 < LemonWork> i am too used to legacy
11:04 < LemonWork> lab man makes things so much easier
11:32 < Dr_Tongue> as long as you can keep him on the table
11:38  < KIP_NZ> Screw labman, that appears to be the proper way to win!
11:38  < KIP_NZ> Beacon it is!

It was a 75 proxy event with a prize I didn't care about so I wanted to to play something fun. I managed to completely punt 2 games post casting Doomsday with beacon piles. I screwed one up by having U Sea + fetch in my opener, I lead with the sea, ritual doomsday and then realised after I passed the turn that I didn't have a land in my pile to fetch with the fetch AND I didn't have the required 2 mana to kill with that pile ... 2 turns later I decked myself.

Have you made your choice for what prize you are putting up?

I bought a SP Scrubland today to use as this prize.

Yer agreed. I've got 2 play sets of wastelands so I can have multiple legacy decks sleeved up at once.

Prize for unpowered deck, definitely a dual land, Jace, Tms Or Mana Drain. You could do a playset of wastelands instead. Nowadays it is hard to say what cards are Legacy cards or vintage cards (apart from the B&R list of course.)

Back when we had local type 1, we would have stuff for unpowered players just for participating in the tournament. Stuff like: Limited ed mtg playmat, mtg binders, creature tokens (mostly squirel), or even a free entry to the next type 1 tournament. Just to encourage them to keep coming back.

Hope this helps.

Glad you said this, I was going huh? at a playset of wastelands. That's more value than the winner of the event is getting!
Just so you know Wastelands are around $90 a piece now, so giving a play set away is almost as much as a piece of power haha... Magic is so expensive
