3  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Bloodghasted Ichorid Primer- Looking to the future on: April 20, 2010, 11:31:20 pm
I havn't had much time to playing vintage, but why did Careful Studies disapair from this deck. Since the deck plays Bloodghast, this card feeds on mana drops, so wouldn't playing Careful Study, be almost an auto inclusion to this deck. I notice before sb, even if you only bazaar just once, because it gets strip. This usually still allows your to win, it just slows you down a turn or two. Most of the decks that run wasted lands are Fish and Artifact decks. Those are usually slow decks. If you run enough mana in the deck, playing four Careful Studies is almost like running 8 Bazaars.

Untap Bazaar even with Wastedland threats, still allows you to activate atlease once, as long as theres no Stife effects or Pithing Needles on board. Careful Study does have alot more threats, with all the Counterspells. It just seems to good not to play, it helps you dig through your deck, if you need to find an anwser, or helps you win faster.

Am I missing somthing here on why its not played anymore. I would like to know why, so if anyone knows, please tell me.

Great tourament Nick, I enjoy it, even though I didn't top 8. I look forward in more Vintage touraments. The prize support was good and plenty of room to play. Living within minutes from the tourament was really nice. I will help support your other vintage touraments that you hold, if im able to attend.

Is google maps wrong? I'm getting two different ending locations between mapquest and google.
I think these map quest directions are wrong. I just talk to my buddy Matt thats there watching the standard event final. He said you go behind the Harrisburg Mall and drive a half mile and its on the left, this matches google but not map quest. So i would trust google directions over the map quest directions.
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Old School Re-Animator Still Viable? on: July 14, 2008, 11:53:32 pm
Actrally, I never played either one of these decks in Vintage. I agree that Dragon Combo is better. I just remember playing against Dragon decks in touraments, and how easy I crush it with my Bomberman deck at the time with main deck Crypts and Spellsbombs. After sb it was almost impossible for them to win. I was just pointing out some things about each deck. The deck can just win turn one making it viable in Vintage, but with all the graveyard hate, I feel theres better decks in the format.
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Old School Re-Animator Still Viable? on: July 12, 2008, 10:54:00 pm
The win conditions and are my biggest concern, i feel there could be better reanimation targets but i can't think of anything more efficient Sad
Anyhow, thanks in advance for the advice guys.

In Vintage, I think the best creature to reanimate is WorldGorger Dragon. Once you reanimate it, you win instantly. Your creatures need an attack phase, and kill too slowly. They could be included in an old Oath build, the main advantage is that you don't need the graveyard to have them into play. But it's not the same deck.
The problems that I always had with WorldGorger Dragon decks. Was if your opt has a creature removal, bounce, or enchantment removal spell at instant speed with mana open to play any of those. Your going to loose all your permanents, that's if they stack there spell at the right time. Since wizards change the rules on enchant creatures, that now the enchantment just falls off and the creatures remains in play. This makes cards like Necromancy and Animate dead so much better. So basically yeah if you play the version with the creature kill, you may not win instantly but its allot less risky, because you don't take the change of loosing all your permanents. Once that happens that's pretty much game over for dragons.
8  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Blue Bell Tournament 6/28/08 on: June 29, 2008, 05:36:58 pm
Chalice x 4, Null Rod x 2, Life from the Loam, Strip mine, Wasteland x2 and Mishra's Factory x2 were an absolute beating all day long.  There's probably a few things I'd change in the main deck and sideboard after playing the deck but not those cards.  No way.

How cool is it to drive up with someone and split the finals with them!

Team 0-2 drop ftw I guess?
Yes your deck was an aboslute ass beating on me. Having to deal with Force, Chalice, Null rod, Strip Mine, was completly not kool for me. You pick a very good deck to play there. AJ and you were the only ones who beat my Belcher deck, everyone else, I 2-0 them, congrats on the great finish.
9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Blue Bell Tournament 6/28/08 on: June 29, 2008, 05:27:27 pm
I wouldn't go to far to say, Slaver is the best deck in the format. There were a ton of people playing it there, my guess would be 5-6. You have to factor, when so many people play a certain deck, thats going to up the chances of it winning. AJ is a very good player. I'm sure he could have pilet other decks, to first place.

I played AJ in the semi-finials, I thought I had game one won, when my Goblin Charbelcher hit the table with enough mana to activate it with only one land left in deck. My Bayou was only three cards down. I thought I had him next turn, he top deck Mana Crypt which able him to cast Rack in Ruin. I was like you main deck them.He Tinker Tian and won.

Game two I had to Mulligan down to six. I had plenty of mana spells Cabal Ritual and Dark Ritual but not enough busniess from what I remember. I think he Force something important and Tinker again, as in game one for the win.
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Brainstorm, Flash, Gush, Scroll, and Ponder Restricted on: June 03, 2008, 09:18:21 pm
I agree with what they restricted other than Ponder, if they would have restricted something from Irchrid, I would have totally agree with this change. Blue had to much power. But at the same time, they really needed to restricted something from Ichrid. How is this a heathy format when just about every deck needs to either maindeck or sb four Leylines, mainly for one deck. This change is only going to force people to hate on Ichrid even more. As for Stax and Grim long, I feel Long was better than Stax before this change. Long was just alot more skill intenstive. But now with BS restricted it evens these decks out.
11  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Harrisburg Tournament 10/26 Mox Jet on: October 31, 2007, 03:46:11 pm
Ill be there, im already sick of seeing gush decks, all over the place.
12  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Tournament Report - Adventurer's Guild 10-26-07 on: October 29, 2007, 03:59:42 pm
I am the guy, you played in the top 4 playing 5 color stax. This was by far the easiest tourament to top 8 in, for a Mox as the prize. There were only 16 people playing in it, and four of them were from State College playing very bad decks. With the terible attendance, im not sure if theres going to be anymore at this location, I can only hope.

You sure did smash me in with Ichrid, in the top four first game. Thanks for the lackey and the wheel of fortune for just conceding the second game, the odds get alittle better for me after sb, but I probably only had, maybe a 5-10 percent chance on winning the next two. I would have had to rely on wastedlands and tormods crypt recursion with welder to have any chance. I wasnt excepting to see ichrid there so I ran zero Leylines, which was a huge mistake.

Well Congrags on the excellent finish.
13  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Gro-A-Tog sideboard strategy on: September 13, 2007, 04:28:03 pm
I like the red splash alot, its very good agaisnt the mirror, flash, etc. I just dont aggree with putting the red splash in agaisnt Stax. Thats bumping the deck up to four colors, agaisnt land destruction.  Maybe I need to test stax with Steve sb, to see how well it really does. It just doesnt appear to me, to be the best.
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Gro-A-Tog sideboard strategy on: September 13, 2007, 03:47:58 pm
The deck only runs 1 Cunning Wish, which was just stated. Whats the point, you can still run a oxidize, echoing truth in the board to go along with the Energy Flux. Why do you need 4-5 wish targets, when theres only one cunning wish.

I never said I didn't run the red splash, you assume that. I actrally run a single Volcanic Island in my board, and when I do sb in my rebs, I take out the single basic island. This is fine agaisnt the mirrior and everything else thats blue except for the blue decks that do run wastedlands, which is few right now.
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Gro-A-Tog sideboard strategy on: September 12, 2007, 07:54:39 pm

Steve, how do you get away with just running a single Volcanic and a Mox Ruby, with all there strip effects. Four colors seems like your trying to do to much agaisnt Stax. Fire, Rack and Ruin, Ancient Grudge are all red sources, with only two possible ways ways to produce, not counting Lotus.

I know you can shut off wastedlands with pithing needle and Gush in responce and fetch only when need be, but for real four colors seems like alot agaisnt land destruction. Did you play agaisnt Stax at Vintage Worlds, and if so how did that work?

Since the deck is mainly blue, wouldn't Energy Flux be better overall. It even pitches to Force.

I do like Pithing Needle alot and its easy to cast first turn, as long as theres no Chalise at 1.

Yes, I agree with Dshel and Kevin, about it being way to hot in the store. It didn't help, it was like an oven outside that day. Now that fall is coming around, by the time Mike has the next one, it should be nice in cool. There also isn't enough space. I ended up having to walk over the table to get out, in the one round, since I was smash agaisnt the wall.

Kevin, I can't believe we never played each other yet. I had played in like the past ten blue bells, not missing a single one.

I hope to see you all, at the Mox tourament in Harrisburg in October, and the next Blue Bell.

17  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Blue Bell Tournament 8-25 (pics) on: August 26, 2007, 09:45:15 am
Heres a brief decription of my tourament report. I really don't feel like going into little detail on it. It has cause problem in the past, and the site gets upset and locks us out.

First round, I played agaisnt Ichrid. This is a terible matchup for me. I drew the nuts and won turn 3 both games. The only cards I had agaisnt it, in the sb were, a Echoing Truth and 2 Smothers and they still suck. He sb in alot of dead cards thinking I had Leylines, Jailer, and or Pithing Needles.  I decided to take out the Leylines out of the sb, because I thought the deck was dead. If he would have been able to get a good start on me, I never would have won this match.

Second round, I played agaisnt Gat Tendrils. I got paried down to the guy, who drew with Dshel. First game I combo out early on him thats three games straight I won early. Second game I got the early duress and Druid in play and just slow played it playing that game very controling. I most admit when I was duressing him the second game he drew really crappy a bunch of black cards and no black mana. So now my record is 4-0.

Third round, I played agaisnt AK Intuition.  Just like the past round I got paired down again. This guy was 1 win and 1 draw. The first game I think I drew the nuts, and the second game he drew way to many lands, even after casting Fact or Fiction and got a AK for 2. I notice in the first game, I Duress him and he had Ancestral Recall in his hand with a blue untap. I was actrally quite surprize he didnt cast it, in responce to my duress. But its a good thing he didn't, because I had misdirection in hand. Maybe some how he saw that in my hand. So now im 6-0

Fourth round, I played the Gat mirror agaisnt Shawn. First game I drop a early Druid that goes all the way. Second game he drops the early Druid that goes all the way. The thrid game was really close we both had creatures on the board. He went to smother my Druid and I went in Midirected it to his Tog. I think that may have been the game breaker. Now I am 8-1.

I Drew in the 5th and 6th round.

Top 8, I have to play the mirror again, agaisnt Dan. I went crazy on him first game with Will and having more counters than him. Second game he beat me down with a early Druid and drew alot more cards than me and had more counters. Third game, I think I lead a bit stronger, but when he played his Ancestral Recall and I Misdirected it back to me, was probably the game breaker.

Top 4, I got crash by Ray both games by Staxless Stax.
18  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: How the Grinch Stole Christmas [TMDXI T16 Report] on: August 07, 2007, 09:52:57 pm
It doesn't matter if a certain color, only has a few restricted cards. That doesnt mean its the worse color. Look at red, theres only 1 restricted card. But I do agree, white is the weakest color in vintage right now. Blue White Fish, seems to be falling off the face of the earth. Not a single person play that at the last tourament, I was at.
19  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Harrisburg Tournament 8-4 on: August 07, 2007, 09:45:31 pm
I can't wait for more, you can include me in on all Vintage touraments in Harrisburg. I only live 15-20 mins away.
20  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Harrisburg Tournament 8-4 on: August 05, 2007, 01:48:06 pm
I stopped in for a little on Saturday to watch the fellow Vintage players duke it out.  It's nice to see Harrisburg get a Vintage event and have a good prize up for grabs.  For the Guild, this was a good turn out.

Awesome job Matt!  Congrats to the winner!

Dshell you should have played in the event. I'm glad I played, even though I got stumped 3 times, playing agaisnt GAT.

The Adventures Guild is a very nice to play. They pretty much let you do whatever you want. You can bring food and drinks in there. How many stores let you do that. I hope we have more Vintage events there.

Thanks Shawn, for always following up on deck reports. I'm sure everyone apprecates that.
22  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: July 31, 2007, 03:46:37 pm
Well, I don't totally agree with your Merchant Scroll theory.  I really like it because if your opponent gets one or more null rods on the board, you HAVE to get E. Truth to combo out, and usually just to win.

I agree, Echoing Truth is very important, but only because of Null Rod. The tool box, can handle most of the other problems. These take care of most problems, Explostives, Spellbomb, and Crypt. But once Null Rod hits the board, it does cripple all of the artifacts.

I tested both Merchant Scroll and Cunning Wish. I have like the wish so much better. Maybe its just my style of play, and perfer instants over sorceries.

23  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: July 30, 2007, 08:35:19 pm
I have never been personly sold on Merchant Scroll, the problem is its a sorcery. Without running cards like Gush, Flash, or AKs, it limits your tutor targets. The deck is already running enough sorcery speed cards. Reacting to your opts spells is much better, than letting them react to yours. I understand you can get bounce, draw, or countermagic with it.

Example, if you get Force of Will, your basicly giving up two mana at sorcery speed and maybe two cards. This seem unexceptible.

Another example, if you get Ancestral Recall. Your paying 3 mana to draw 3 cards, with two of the mana, at sorcery speed. In this instance, its alittle better than a Thrist for Knowledge.

Aven Mindsencor is the nuts in this deck, I know it was, before people started playing it. I didn't know what to cut for them. I ended up cutting my Mana Leaks for them.

The deck should be running 4 Thrist for Knowledge and a higher count of 3 Spellbombs. Most of the versions are down to one Spellbomb and 2 Thrist. The tricks you can do with them, to save your creatures, research with Trinketmage, and also deal with opt creatures. This card is never a dead card. You also use it to combo off, sac to draw a card, or also pitches to Thirst. If any deck can abuse Thirst, its this one.

Because almost every blue base deck is running Ak, doesn't mean its best for this deck. Don't get me wrong, its a really strong card. I feel this deck can abuse, Thrist much more than AK.

With my playstyle, I almost want to add some extra counters, the Mana Leaks. They are better than people give them credit for. I found troubles, in trying to fit all the cards I want in this deck. It got alot harder with the addition of Mindsencor but its so good, and its a instant.
24  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Blue Bell Tournament 6-30 (pics) on: July 03, 2007, 10:08:37 pm
Is there really any point to run Elvish Spirit Guilde in Hulk Flash. I mean this is a two mana combo. How ofter are you stuck on one land, with also running moxes, lotus, and lotus petal. I personally rather add another counterspell or draw to build up consistantcy. Summoner's Pact is a dead card, intil the turn you try to win. Since you probably will never be able to pay the upkeep cost.

I feel as if 4 Protein Hulks and 3 Summoner's Pact is better than the other way around.

Its almost like, people are trying to push harder for turn one kills than consistantcy.

With Force of Will, Misdirection, and Pact of Negation. This deck truely abuses FREE COUNTER SPELLS.
25  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Blue Bell Tournament 6-30 (pics) on: July 02, 2007, 05:55:04 pm
The Heart Sliver + Virulent Sliver combo kills in a single turn.  You get 4 Virulent Slivers and a Heart, then swing and put a bunch of Poison counters on them.

Okay I understand now. With four Virulent Slivers in play each Sliver that deals damage, gives out 4 poision counters. So as long and 3 slivers get through, thats more than enough. Now I wouldn't see any reason to run the Kiki version. It gets hated out by so much more " like Dragons ". Sliver version still gets stop by Echohing Truth, and Aven Mindcendsor. But its also alot easier to replay the one casting cost sliver from your hand.
26  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Results] Blue Bell Tournament 6-30 (pics) on: July 02, 2007, 05:33:50 pm
I try out Flash as soon as it came out, a month ago with the kiki combo. I felt as if, almost half of my hands were to slow, either having Summons Pack and Hulk and no tutors or Flash, I found myself parising alot. So I am actrally kinda shock, on how well it did. It also, didn't do to hot down at starcitygames two weeks ago.

The Heart Sliver, Virulent Sliver combo takes two turns but gets around all the graveyard hate, bounce, Pithing Needles, and removel.  It exchanges by taking two turn to kill, unless they have Timewalk. I never seen or played agaisnt the Slivers version. Is this how it works? If someone could please let me know, that would be great.

The Kiki version, kills the same turn, but hits alot of hate, kinda like what happen to dragons. This is the version I tested and found to be inconsistant like Dragons.

Its just shocking, I wouldn't have expected to see more than 1, maybe 2 in the top 8, but not fifty percent of the top 8 playing it.

I was there playing bomberman and my deck crap out on me. I think Aven Mindcensor is amazing right now, and I ran 3 in my main deck. I was having problems drawing into them all day long.
27  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: June 28, 2007, 10:23:25 pm
Main reason why I run red, Flametongue Kavu, I'll take this over REB. Red also give you Rack in Ruin, not like anyone plays Stax theses days. People don't understand the tricks, you can do with this card. Spellbomb it back to hand, while combat damage is on the stack is a insane play. She even kills Grunts.  Wink
28  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Giftsless Gifts on: June 04, 2007, 04:13:55 pm
I've just added Giftd to the deck and it's ok, but I still prefer Intuition. I tried AK and it really badly sucked, so I'm not going to use it. Wink

I'll post the new list soon! Thanks for the helps so far.

It really comes down to the meta and your play style. Im not saying your version is bad "I never tested it". I just mention what I though was better. Take everything, as a grain of salt. You tested it, and didnt like it, so thats kool. Atlease you gave it a try.
29  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Giftsless Gifts on: June 02, 2007, 09:53:29 pm
Yeah, try cutting the 3 Impulses, and the Imperial Seal. I personly would rather see Mystical inplace of the Seal, mainly because, if need be it can be pitch to force. The Pact of Negation, is only good the turn in which your comboing off.

If your having problems with keeping red on board for Recoup. Try not to break all your fetchlands right away, intil you need to. Your deck needs, double blue open for Mana Drain. You could also cut Pact for a Misdirection.

I don't think you understand the fact is, Intution works Great with AK. Theres so many tricks you can do with this card.

For Example  If you have AK in your hand and Intution. Thats will allow you to draw 7 cards.

Second Example.  You have Intution in hand, allow with Merchant Scroll. You Intution for 3 AK, and then Scroll for the 4th. This also allows you to draw 7 cards.

Thrid Example.   With doing the above, this really shines when you cast Yawgmoths Will.

You almost never go straight for the combo pieces right away. You set up for the combo and thats the whole part of the AK engine. Atlease thats how the gifts deck is usually played out.

Any deck that runs Intution, should concider running AK. Unlike Gifts Ungiven where you can only search for one copy at at time is pretty pointless.
30  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Giftsless Gifts on: June 02, 2007, 02:08:20 pm
Those of you saying to add AK, what is the point? Why waste time, mana and card slots drawing an extra three cards when I could just use Intuition to win anyway?

The extra card drawing, is a huge boost agaisnt control. You want to set up, gaining control of the board.

Its like with Gifts, usually the first Gifts, gets mana, counters, and or tutors. So basicly your doing it with the extra card draw instead of Gifts.
