1  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Stone Cold Humans: The Best Kept Vintage Secret on: April 25, 2015, 08:03:45 pm
What makes knight so great with mentor? Accessing tabernacle? Maze of ith? Both? Or just having a bigger body? Sorry if the answer if very obvious, but mentor still seems a solid menace against knight (but I agree that does not seem as frightening by any means).

Yes, Tabernacle is real. Denying any mana before hand is just a cherry on top. A lot of the time, you will have a sphere out(thalia), chalice, abolisher, eidolon--SOME sort of disruption to hurt your opponents play. Being one turn behind knight is a massive beating, because then you are eating wastelands, or letting any utility lands resolve. They need to have swords on hand immediately to remove Knight.

You also need to remember, Mentor is what makes the deck go round. If they don't have him (there's only 4!) the deck is not nearly as threatening. In fact, I would still say Pyromancer is more of a threat than Mentor, just because they can start getting a few tokens rolling a turn earlier. 2 v 3 is big vs us. We need Knight as well, only a 3 of, to really beat up the tokens.

I miss orzhov pontiff, maybe I will bring him back as a 1 of as well.

Nice post! Go Humans!  Wink

I haven't had as much time to play Vintage lately, unfortunately, but I was able to remedy that yesterday. Took a Humans list to 4-0 again in the daily event last night--beating up mentor with knight is too appealing.

I spent quite a bit of time working out Humans lists with Guli, and I thank him for showing me how to approach the Humans archetype. I'm glad to see another post on it Smile

I ran an extremely similar list to the one you posted :

Screenshot : http://imgur.com/up0uBFn

Land (24):
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Windswept Heath
1 Verdant Catacombs
2 Savannah
2 Scrubland
1 Bayou
1 Forest
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Karakas
1 Gaea’s Cradle
1 The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale
1 Maze of Ith

Artifacts (7):
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Jet
3 Chalice of the Void

Enchantments (3):
3 Stony Silence

Creatures (23):
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Dark Confidant
3 Grand Abolisher   2 Grand Abolisher
3 Qasali Pridemage
2 Eidolon of Rhetoric
3 Knight of the Reliquary
1 Spirit of the Labyrinth

Instants (3):
3 Abrupt Decay

Sideboard (15):
3 Containment Priest
1 Abrupt Decay
2 Swords To Plowshares
4 Mayor of Avabruck 3 Mayor of Avabruck
1 Ghost Quarter
1 Plains
3 Gaddock Teeg
1 Scavenging Ooze

Didn't really affect things too much overall, but the reason I wanted a Spirit main as another threat against draw decks and a quick clock. Scavenging Ooze is there to help control the graveyard when I need to and get big/gain life vs fair decks.

Deck played well, Knight is a great nod to a mentor/pyromancer infested meta. I like it. Could even see playing a 4th in the side.

Edit: I think one of the things I missed most is having a way to interact on the draw. I have used a few missteps here in the past, I don't think they are bad here either. Perhaps add a Tasigur as well since you have more GY to use.
3  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Monastery Mentor on: January 01, 2015, 12:47:16 am

White now has a young pyromancer of its own.  Costs more, but allows for White/Blue design.  Probably not as good as pyromancer because mana cost is one of the most important characteristics that makes a card playable in vintage, but the effect is proven.

Long live Khans block!

It hits off moxen/artifacts/pws though, which is super awesome Very Happy. i will fool around with this card 100%, love it
4  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Metalworker on: December 25, 2014, 10:06:45 am
What is ghostfire? his other abilities are nuts and yes i could def see him being used in metalworker mud. he seems an easy replacement for karn or steel hellkite even.

3 dmg to target creature or player, was a colorless instant
5  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Jeskai Ascendancy on: December 24, 2014, 11:35:50 am
We tested a version that splashed green for only fastbond.  It makes the deck.  I gives you a third win condition.  Between acedancy, fastbond and pyromamcer the deck is in very good shape.  Also cages and fatestitcher is a non-Bo.

Fastbond does nothing for you....

Curious how it made the deck for you, as when I tried the card it didn't do anything. Without tutors it's not reliable and when you are going off it's not something you want to hit off a probe/cantrip as it stops the combo cold.

If Ethan is around, thanks to WoTC for putting this on it was good times. Ended up 5-3, lets do it again  Smile
I'm glad you had fun! I'll pass it along to the MTGO folks.

I'm hoping that this will create enough critical mass that we'll fire more DEs. I believe that Vintage can succeed on MTGO.

Was awesome seeing so many people come out for this Smile

These big events definitely add the extra incentive to get people out of the woodwork's and into daily events. I hope it keeps up!
7  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Human Ingenuity on: December 17, 2014, 05:30:52 pm
Pretty sure that skullclamp with Recruiter/Pridemage would work.

I think the question is no longer related to a lack of options, but instead the challenge is to make your own version of 'Humans'. What do you consider fun, competitive and synergistic. I have my way of establishing parameters and the question I ask myself is what will I face, what are problems for this kind of deck. How you solve the potential problems is entirely up to you, and you can get very creative in this regard when it comes to Cavern Human builds. There are just a handful of cards that I see as 'really necessary' or as 'usual suspects'. For example, Dark Confidant, it no longer is an absolute must. At least not in my view. There are plenty of ways to incrementally generate cards. A trinket there, a recruiter here, then do some Dack action for card quality, dig with top, nullify a Tinker or Oath target with Priest, Notion Thief a Gush or Jace activation ...

This is why I love the deck ^^. I missed that the build was just an outline, that makes much more sense now! I think I'm going to start messing around with this again now that I have a few Containment Priests online.
8  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Human Ingenuity on: December 16, 2014, 05:41:37 pm
I would love to be able to jam Humans again, but when I re-bought power I decided to get rid of the 2 wastes I had.

If the price is ever reasonable I will jump back on this deck, as Humans will always have a special place for being my Vintage first. I can absolutely see what Containment Priest brings to the field, but I'm not as excited about running 8 pain lands :s.

I'm not one to doubt Guli, he has given me plenty of great decks and ideas...I just dislike the mana base in the example. Also to the above, prophet of kruphix seems like a ton to invest..but I've run crazier cards.
9  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Jeskai Ascendancy on: December 15, 2014, 05:25:36 am
I've been playing a few daily events with this deck and have cashed the majority of them, here's my current setup : http://imgur.com/N43IrPu

I don't think this is ideal. I think there's a better version of this deck out there...but this has been good enough to have success right now. Part of me wonders if theres a version without fatestitchers that is better. Or something different, who knows....(I have delusions of gushbonding with this deck)

11  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Jeskai Ascendancy on: December 12, 2014, 11:45:13 am
light green splash perhaps for some main deck grudges? ( didn't see if this had been discussed/ruled out as a bad option )

easy to discard while going off, 1 mana flashback. splash shouldn't be too hard to add for just this card and how much filtering the deck has anyway.

dacks 3 mana doesn't excite me as much, but ive only played 1-2 matches with this deck :s

Wizards does not control the secondary market.

Perhaps not directly. However, they do still at least indirectly control it. Excluding Wasteland from Vintage Masters, for example, kept that card's price much higher than it otherwise would have been.

They also chose what cards to give away for the 15qps each month, the last few choices have been...less than ideal. Wizards definitely keeps their hand in the cookie jar here :p
13  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Magic Online Power Nine Owners on: December 09, 2014, 02:39:16 am
It's bc cardbot n crew finally kicked their propped up prices down. Prices are low enough for me to recommend people to buy in if you are planning to play, from an investment standpoint, obviously a bad place to be.

Only lotus and sapphire now over 50  Wink
14  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Merfolk on: December 08, 2014, 09:58:14 pm
I modeled a decklist very close to the ones I got on this website and ran it with decent success in the past few DE's on mtgo, probably still a couple cards off the correct build. Was just testing a few different things, I don't like the 4th misstep main, for instance. I figure I'll try to get my hands on a second misdirection. The 3 Reej's + 1 TNN played out better for me than running 4 TNNs would have, for the decklists I faced at least. For the upcoming event on mtgo this is currently my choice as I am playing for the unpowered challenge.

I know the people here ran 2 jitte side, but there's a part of me that wants to cut the 1 I ran for something more proactive, just not sure what.

here's what I ran : http://imgur.com/JKA5kAR

I haven't looked into it at all yet, but has the Holiday Vintage Festival influenced the price of Bazaars? In the initial announcement the non-powered prize requirement was just that you couldn't have any Power 9 without mentioning Bazaar, Workshop, Imperial Seal etc. like Eternal Weekend did.

Pretty sure they changed it so Bazaar is off that list and excludes you from unpowered prizes.
16  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Vintage Champs T32 Archetypes on: December 02, 2014, 02:56:00 am
Is there a place I can find the deck list that won the unpowered prize? Also possibly the top 5 unpowered decks?

I looked around but wasn't able to find this information anywhere.

thinking or hoping it will get the same support as standard/modern/legacy or even payouts/schedule adjustments/priorities is kind of silly imo.

To the best of my knowledge, vintage is in fact the only format that they've made schedule adjustments to in the hopes of making the dailies fire again. Say what you will about whether they took the correct line, but thinking Wizards isn't trying to make MTGO Vintage viable is confirmation bias at this point.

If you think MTGO is a garbage piece of software and refuse to use it, fine, but Wizards does care about Vintage online.

lol..your statement is in and of itself bias. "They changed something, therefore they care".

I have my opinion and I've made it, I won't clog up this thread or any other with more statements from here on out.
19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Magic Online Power Nine Owners on: November 17, 2014, 08:45:11 pm
If WotC truly did not care about Vintage on MTGO at all, then they wouldn't have made the Winter Festival. This kind of fear mongering is what is driving people away, not the actual reality of the situation.

It couldn't be farther from the truth.... You do realize that the VMA draft format is also conveniently coming back. WoTC again has product to push and an upcoming World Championship that is featuring none other than the VMA draft format. What better way to entice the people on MTGO to draft VMA again for the Worlds players practice than to have a big Vintage event after World's for us common folk.

I'm not "fear mongering". It's a legit concern.

I really appreciate you taking the time to actually read my earlier replies. If you had, you would have surely read that I never once stated I was "expecting some "Vintage Champs level of organized play each and every day". Perhaps you were spending more time thinking of ways to hurl thinly veiled insults at my expense than address my actual disappointment with buying in and why I would advise against it. I just wanted to experience vintage. I can't afford to buy paper power so MTGO seemed like a great option for me. If I could do it over again, I would have just put that money into paper. I've only been playing vintage for 1 month. I've only been playing on MTGO for 1 month. In that month I went from being able to play plenty of vintage games at my leisure, to playing 1 or 2 games against a DIFFERENT person in as many hours a night.

How is any of that helping to drive people away?
What did I do?
I'm sorry that my mere presence is enough to offend so many people and stop them from playing vintage on MTGO. What can I do to help bring them back?

I'd still only get to play in as many paper tournaments as I do now with MTGO, which is a nice way of saying I would get to play in just about zero. Don't get me wrong, I am genuinely excited that WoTC is having the Winter Holiday Festival Event. What ever it takes, just as long as I get to play some Vintage.

Sigh. You do realize that VMA coming back is just WotC's standard SOP on MTGO, don't you? They did the exact same thing last year with Modern Masters. In fact, they did it MULTIPLE times. I can't fathom any reasonable argument that bringing back VMA for a short period of time is bad for Vintage in any way. What exactly is your negativitey towards it? It seems to me that it can only help, and if nothing else, it maintains the status quo.

I can't explain why you think you are only playing against 1-2 different people when you try to play Vintage. I, and many others, don't seem to have that problem.

Also, Vintage tournaments are firing on the weekend with regularity over the last 3-4 weeks. Is playing on the weekends not an option for you? To say that there are "about zero" tournaments is patently false unless you are unavailable on the weekends.

Also,

Quote
How is any of that helping to drive people away?
What did I do?

You clearly said you would not recommend people to buy in to Vintage on MTGO, so yeah, you are driving people away. It's your opinion, no doubt, but the chorus of negativity from countless other people collectively contribute to people not playing. You can complain and tell people to not play, or you can be supportive and encourage people to play so that you can have more than 1-2 people to play against. Just an idea.

Overall, though, it seems the general public opinion is that WotC is actively trying to kill Vintage. I find that laughable. If they wanted to "kill Vintage", they would just actually kill it, not come up with this long drawn out contrived plan that tin foil hat wearing people believe they are doing. They have no reason to benefit from not having Vintage active in some form. Yes, they made most of their money already through VMA, but they can still make money by having a vibrant Vintage scene. The Winter Festival is the exact demonstration of their interest in that endeavor. I just can't understand why anyone thinks it's bad for Vintage. Guess you can't appease everyone...

There's more I want to comment on in here, but I've kind of beaten this stuff to death with my posts everywhere. The Vintage tournament is far better EV for wizards than it is for any player. Feels like VMA/Vintage gave them the best opportunity for gains end of year.

"You can complain and tell people to not play, or you can be supportive and encourage people to play so that you can have more than 1-2 people to play against. Just an idea."

Unfortunately, I cannot in good conscience recommend Vintage mtgo to anyone in its current state right now, and to tell them I think it would be worth it would be an entire lie. The fact of the matter is, Vintage is a TINY part of magic, thinking or hoping it will get the same support as standard/modern/legacy or even payouts/schedule adjustments/priorities is kind of silly imo. And the reason why I see this whole " VMA IS COMING BACK! " thing as a complete joke, it looks like behind the curtains it's got to be nothing more than a way to boost end of the year $ to look good for next q.

Also, I still find it laughable that our only option to play is on the weekends. I for one will not invest for such a limited time frame of play ability...that is not enough time for me to feel the invest is worth it. I was invested in Vintage from the start of release online and have felt a large pull back ever since then. Could you argue this " fear mongering " is what is driving people away? Sure, but this kind of stuff NEEDS to be said in my opinion. Most people here don't realize the complexity or countless blunders/lies wotc/worth made re: VMA/Vintage.

Did they make a lot of money off VMA? Sure, and now they want more. If they can get people to buy into legacy/vintage for this tournament and/or draft for some cards, even for a few days--job well done on their side. They accomplished their goal..

All of those great things about the paper Vintage community should not be applied online :p. You will experience people that just want to win, and sure, you will hit a guy like Rich once in a while and it makes it all worth it, but for the most part...it's the internet. I'd say gloves are off in terms of "etiquette" on mtgo--people will grind your clock etc-- but not sure if that was what you were talking about.

And don't forget that tonight will feature an announcement of a new competitor for Season 2, as well as a Bonus Special Announcement!

So, a glorified premier event ? :p
very good prize support too

Doesn't really change the validity my statement any lol. Consider me not impressed by this announcement, seems like a flash in the pan that I can't see bringing anyone new to the format besides those who play in the tournament for a single day.

Even then, 10th-19th gives us one weekend to qualify via Vintage :/

Yep, figured as much. More VMA in the system is sure to increase the Vintage player base/daily results right guys! -.-

In Worth's eyes VMA = Vintage, Vintage = VMA. They have misspoke quite a bit, flip flopping the words. Meh, color me severely unimpressed by VMA coming back.

Nice list  Smile

I was doing pretty well with a fish build featuring MD stony on MTGO a while back before KTK hit. I haven't had a chance to play much Vintage since then, so I can't comment on how it matches up in the current meta/what that meta is online anymore. Stony was my best t1 play a lot of the time vs a good chunk of decks I was facing, with counter backup ideally and a creature to follow suite ^^. Card is so hard to remove for decks that just bank on artifact removal.

Haven't posted in a while, but figured I'd revise my stance to " No ". As I no longer own power 9 online. Hopefully they will support it more in the future ( Razz ) but as it stands now, there are multiple reasons for my discomfort in being invested in Vintage online.

That being said, for those of you who are still trucking, I wish you the best. I have nothing against the format, it's been incredible--I just have something against how it's been handled and continues to be.
30  Eternal Formats / Online Tournaments / Re: TMD MTGO Open on: October 03, 2014, 05:36:33 pm
I don't think people are seeing this, I've been checking TMD quite often and just saw the topic. I'm planning to join this one, just waiting for Khans to be released in MODO, try some things out before finalizing my deck list.

Is there a minimum number of players for this event?

No, but I'm actually considering cancelling the event, since nobody has preregistered, and there doesn't seem to be much interest overall. I think I've seen about 10 players express interest, which is hardly enough to justify running this event.

I, like I imagine plenty of others, have not narrowed down a deck yet and wanted to test Khans cards before submitting. If this is in danger of being cancelled I can certainly sign up and change decklists later.

I'm in the same boat. Was waiting to test out treasure cruise/dig but..no events firing and I hate 2 man testing. Either way, can submit a deck as well if you need it now.
