1  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Back to the Future: An Introduction to Old School Magic on: March 22, 2016, 06:36:12 am
This was an enjoyable read Steve. Old School magic interests me a great deal. Unfortunately I'm unlikely to be able to play it any time soon, but if I had the opportunity I would gladly take it.

I went over a few of the cards from SOI that were spoiled by the time I was writing this.
3  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Legacy Challenge and League on MODO on: March 15, 2016, 12:19:00 pm
Thanks for sharing this. I'm still surprised that they don't have Vintage as a league yet on MTGO. I'm not sure if any format would benefit greater than Vintage would by having a league. So many of us are busy people and sitting in front of a computer for 3+ hours on a weekday night starting at 9:30pm is not really feasible, but I digress. At least they finally got Legacy on the league rotation. I may join these just on principle to see how well I can fit these into my crazy schedule.

I've been playing legacy lately just because I can play in the leagues, as opposed to the daily events that I couldn't seem to play in and the two player queues that never earn you a pack of cards.

I admit I was completely against leagues at first but after being more realistic with my expectations I came to realize that leagues were a lot better for me. I would love to play in a vintage one.
4  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: Vintage 101: Prison Break on: March 12, 2016, 07:07:46 am
Nice!

It's a topic well worth exploring, and you braved Andy's blockade to post it here. Great work!

Thank you very much, I really appreciate that. I had to try to find a balance between providing lots of useful information for beginners and not having so much information that people would lose interest. Since switching to MTGGoldfish I've shortened the average length of my work. Most folks on TMD seem to enjoy a healthy read, I know I finish shorter articles very quickly myself. A lot of people don't like to read long articles though, and I don't want to turn potential players off by publishing a weekly encyclopedia.

I also tried to focus on tips that would work for most decks, but after I published it I realized that non "blue" decks have some very different things going on. Fetching basic lands isn't a viable technique when you're playing Dredge, for example. If someone does ever ask me anything about Dredge, I'll just point them to TMD and your (AJ) really cool video series.  Wink

Thanks again for the kind words. I hope that this article gives new players enough tools to keep playing Vintage instead of getting frustrated and quitting.

A little update, I had a reader email me to say that they had finally won several matches against shops since reading this article. That was really cool.
Thanks to Thomas Dixon, Stefan Ellsworth, Neils Thiim, all who gave input and suggestions for this.

"Last week I went over the results from the last Power Nine Challenge, and I talked about the oversized representation of Mishra's Workshop decks in the top sixteen spots. In the comments section one of my readers asked me for a few tips on how to deal with Workshop decks. Often times players who are new to Vintage tell me that they've had trouble playing against Workshops, and I think discussing how to approach that matchup is an important resource for a new player."

That's it in a nutshell. Enjoy.

Thanks for another article and the data shout out.

Not the biggest deal, but my delver list was 4C, splashing green for grudge and nature's claim.

No problem. You guys did the work, I wanted to make sure you got the credit.

I've tried to focus on other aspects of the format lately because I don't want people to have a narrow view of Vintage. This week it was hard because those results were very skewed.

The colorless plague spreads to Vintage! [I don't remember writing that, they must have rewritten the teaser].

This is about the last Power Nine Challenge, and the really sweet-looking Blue Moon deck with Chandra the Flamecaller.  Special thanks to Diophan and Chubby Rain.
8  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [SOI] Brain in a Bottle on: March 03, 2016, 06:37:33 am
How sick would Brain into Tutor/Wish into Brain into Tinker (saccing Brain) look?

Probably not as sick as just casting Tutor into Tinker and being two turns faster and up a card.

Is there any progress on the "Like" button?

Anyway the card is really interesting and stuff. That's always cool.
9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: MTGO P9 Metagame Breakdown: February Edition on: February 28, 2016, 10:47:41 pm

Conclusion:

Friends do not let friends play Oath - Without Rich Shay and thediabetical to boost the numbers of the Oath archetype, it put up a 36% win percentage this month.

That makes me sad. I haven't played Oath in a while, but it's always one of my favorite decks. It wasn't that many events ago that an Oath deck won.
10  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Eternal Masters CONFIRMED on: February 27, 2016, 11:19:34 am
I play Vintage every day. I've published an article, mostly about vintage, every week for over a year.  I have several decks, and I've tried almost every deck in the format.

The thing is that if I sold my entire collection, which is all on mtgo, I don't think I could buy even one piece of power with that money. I'd love to play paper vintage but it is far too expensive. Maybe I could make a proxy tournament some day but I don't know. I don't think anyone can really question my dedication to Vintage, but I'm still an outsider to some.

None of that feels right to me. And the number of people who laugh of my articles because they think vintage is too expensive is truly staggering. Nothing will kill a format faster than not having players.

I was on vacation all week and I was unable to do my usual Vintage 101 article. So I finished and submitted this one instead. Hopefully people enjoy the nostalgia of these historical articles.

Vintage 101 should be back soon, probably this week. Take care, and let's all celebrate the new era of TMD! Thanks especially to tmdbrassman!

I haven't been able to listen to it yet because I'm away from home for another few days. I'm looking forward to it though.

Eternal Masters has been announced! What does that mean for Vintage players?

I'm going to check it out as soon as possible can, thanks for doing this. I have a lot of questions about the deck!
15  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Eternal Masters CONFIRMED on: February 15, 2016, 04:00:29 pm
It says in the article $10 per pack

True. But every report I've ever heard of modern masters sets talks about how retailers and small timer sellers gouged the price severely.
16  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: Free Article: Vintage 101: A Bazaar Story on: February 12, 2016, 03:51:23 pm
Nice article on the history of the deck.  The deck has certainly come a long way, and hopefully we get even more options with another graveyard set pending!

The one thing I'd add is a little more about the hate pieces.  The transformation boards actually started because of the printings of some of these hate pieces Grafdigger's Cage, Containment Priest, and Rest in Peace.  While Grafdigger's Cage and Containment Priest are less powerful, their overlap on Oath has made hate much more prevalent than graveyard hate used to be.

Also there is a small copy/edit thing in the first deck list.  The sideboard isn't showing, and there are main deck cards in the board.

Thanks man.

I'm going to try to get the issues fixed. I'm going to be completely honest with you guys, I meant to write more but I was literally falling asleep as I finished this one. That's my fault for not getting enough sleep, but I want you to know that I did feel like I should have squeezed out some more work.

Thanks for reading. What did you guys think of the opinion section at the end? I feel like all vintage decks and their pilots deserve respect, that's why I added that. I don't want someone who could afford a dredge deck online to avoid buying into vintage that way because they have a negative opinion of the deck.
17  Eternal Formats / Bazaar-Based Decks / Re: Pitch Dredge (formerly "Manaless Dredge 2014") on: February 12, 2016, 06:33:40 am
I just built the Pitch Dredge deck and I won my first two matches, but I felt like I played the deck poorly to be honest. I remembered a little bit of what I read about how to sideboard with the deck, but I think I need a refresher course on that.

It definitely feels like there's a lot of potential and people have obviously had great results with the deck, but it is so unlike anything I've ever played before that I am having trouble learning the deck.

With this pitch dredge and even with normal dredge I feel like I'm making mistakes with when to dredge or when to draw cards. At first I just always went nuts with Bazaar and Dredged as much as possible, but that often left me with an empty hand and I couldn't ever actually cast a spell from my hand, even when doing so would have been enormously beneficial to me. Do you guys have any tips on this regard for the various Dredge builds?

Lately I've been doing things like trying to cast a Cabal Therapy from my hand then using the flash back to get more value out of it. That's the one way I've found to play around a Ravenous Trap and sometimes slow-rolling can make them decide to not use a tormod's crypt for a while. It's all very situational but sometimes it feels like the right play.

I want to say thanks to all the people who have worked on these decks, I think they're really cool and I'm glad they've been developed into a tournament-winning archetype. I wrote about Dredge in my article this week and one of the main points I talked about in the end of that article was that Dredge is a powerful deck that deserves more respect. I learned that playing the deck isn't as easy as it seems.

Congrats to matori (as mentioned above) tataku, karakusk, and desolutionist on their recent Pitch Dredge finishes!

I'm thrilled to see a broader circle of people playing the deck and finding success Very Happy

I want to try it, but I'm short a bunch of cards. So I'm sticking to the normal dredge list for the time being. I like the idea of the transformational board though.
20  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Vintage 101: Power Nine 2K16 on: February 09, 2016, 04:55:43 pm
I imagine that it is also somewhat harder in paper magic as there are a lot of triggers to miss.

Absolutely. I have not played paper Magic in quite a while, that's something I need to change.
21  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Vintage 101: Power Nine 2K16 on: February 09, 2016, 11:42:27 am
I want to try out unmask but they're 20 tickets or more on mtgo and I have other cards to pick up first. I've been trying to cast cabal therapy sometimes instead of just flashing it back to get more value out of it and it's been a good tactic in sideboarded games. This is where unmask would shine I think.

I've been trying to learn dredge for an upcoming article and so far I have learned a lot about the deck. It's not as easy to play as it seems, at least in games 2/3.

Nice read Nat!

I think the Grixis Pyromancer deck is pretty tight. Since Mentor has all the limelight it's been less popular, but "Grixis Therapy" is and was a great list.

I finished building your deck and I've been testing it out. Dredge is a lot more fun than I expected. Other than having a knack for mulling down to nothing in my hand it's been great  Wink

Thanks to everyone for checking this out.
25  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] Vintage 101: Power Nine 2K16 on: February 05, 2016, 01:18:47 pm
My Dredge list was budget but, after playing against shops as much as I did I don't think I ever want undiscovered paradise in my dredge list. There were multiple times I had to cast spells two turns in a row and they were not free spells because of the taxing effects of shops. I would not have been able to cast them if I could not keep my lands in play.

Please don't take my words as criticism, I'm actually working on building your dredge list as we speak because it did good and I can afford it easier without the undiscovered Paradise. I only mentioned UP because the general consensus is that you want it for the free fixing and landfall triggers.

Good job taking it all down. I thought the coolest thing you had going on was Wasteland. My Oath deck's Strip Mine has won me so many random games, having extras seems legit.

I know that the dredge deck was sub optimal but I like the fact that someone was able to top eight the event with a 200$ deck. I'd love for people to get into the format and cheap decks help people do that.

Thanks for reading, take care.

Thanks for doing this write up. I've played against your deck quite a bit and I think it's pretty sweet. I'm at work and unable to thoroughly read this, but I'm glad you took the time to make the thread.
29  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Mana Drain too slow? on: February 03, 2016, 11:50:10 am
I think that depends on your deck. My oath lists were built in such a way that Mana Drain wasn't wanted, but you could make a case for it in the right build.

Keep up the good work!
