1  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Correct line of action while observing illegal actions/plays on: January 28, 2008, 09:56:11 pm
I understand that I'm not supposed to interfere, but wouldn't calling a judge and talking to him in private potentially prolong the already erroneous game state?
2  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Correct line of action while observing illegal actions/plays on: January 28, 2008, 12:27:21 pm
Consider this situation. I am one of the few, or the only one observing an ongoing game. A player puts Samurai of the Pale Curtain (WW, 2/2, Bushido 1, If a permanent would be put into a graveyard, remove it from the game instead.) and points out its rfg ability to the opponent. An opponent then plays Ancestral Recall at some points in the game, while the Samurai owner points out that its ability would rfg the ancestral as well (obviously wrong), making a remark that it is "to prevent it from being played by  means of yawg.will" or something of the sort. Now, by the way that was actually played out/said, I'm convinced that neither of the players were aware of the Samurai's ability not removing the anc. from the game.
Given this situation, what would be the most reasonable way to restore the game state without me interfering (I'm assuming I can't simply point out the mistake as an observer)?

I played a person who was using these. I believe he called them "just terrible".
4  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Oath of druids in the current meta. on: August 26, 2007, 08:06:10 pm
What seems to be the reasoning behind playing Thirsts rather than Impulses? I can see the whole synergy with redundant chalice/dodges chalice@2 thing, but wouldn't the benefit of costing 1 mana less early game and digging 1 card deeper outweigh those things? Also running 2 platz makes you terribly susceptible to splash artifact hate. Running 1 Razia/Akroma + 1 Platz seems like a better deal.
It seems like oath is experiencing a rise again. An oath deck just Top2'd at a local tourney here in Toronto.

You got my vote, Steve.
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Trinket Magus on: August 13, 2007, 01:50:19 pm
Would the recent rise of Goblins warrant the inclusion of 2-3 Pyroclasms side? The Goblin matchup seems pretty harsh due to their varied CC and semi-unblockable Piledrivers (your only out G2/3 seems to be the dreadnought but they are packing Sprees, too). 'Clasms can be randomly good against Fish as well and pretty much all other rogue creature decks. What if we make the side looking like this?:
4 LLotV
2 Shattering Spree/Rack and ruin
2 Phyrexian Dreadnought
2 Stifle
2 Trickbind
2 Pyroclasm (used to be Threads of disloyalty)
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] BW Bomberman on: August 08, 2007, 07:11:13 pm
The thing that made Bomberman good was its ability to switch gears between aggro, control and combo mode depending on the board position. It ran Trinket mages to fetch combo pieces or answers as well as Merchant Scrolls in some builds for the same reason. By not including these cards, you're essentially confining yourself to bad aggro-proactive control type of deck, since you're not running enough bombs to make the tendrils finish worthwhile.
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Lets discuss Bomberman today on: August 05, 2007, 07:08:50 pm
Not meaning to perhaps drive this thread into a different direction, but anyway, is it justified to play the UW version in the current GAT/Flash meta (with Fish and combo being played to lesser extend)?
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / Deck choice in current meta on: August 02, 2007, 02:55:52 am
I am in a meta that consists of mostly fish/GAT decks with some stax and other usual stuff. My deck of choice (until now) has been Ichorid, however, I find it too inconsistent in the current meta, with my bazaars getting wasteded and bridges essentially neutered by them being able creatures. I am currently looking at Bomberman (U/W) to take for a tourney, however, I am not sure how will it handle the field. Is it a viable choice in my meta?
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Eternal Potpouri - Doomsday on: May 24, 2007, 05:24:57 pm
Not sure if this belongs to the rules forum or here, but am I correct in the assumption that a failure to reveal a card off desire due to having 0 cards in the library doesn't contribute to a loss?
11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Article] Another Ichorid Piece on: May 07, 2007, 09:40:26 pm
Depending on what they're playing, you may take out Leyline (if you run it of course) among other things. If you are on the draw, taking out Chalice seems to be logical because they might aggressively mull for a Crypt (more often than not) and you'll be too late with the CotV.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Article] Another Ichorid Piece on: May 07, 2007, 12:16:30 am
I've been testing a lot on MWS with Confidant Tendrils recently, and even with its slow speed have generally been outracing Ichorid decks with only Chalice & Therapy to disrupt.  I'd really recommend adding either Leyline or Unmask to any Ichorid maindeck.

His build includes Leyline maindeck. Unmask could be included rather painlessly as well.
13  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Where Does Everyone Play? on: May 05, 2007, 04:54:36 pm
Are there any places in Toronto/GTA that host 1.5 events regularly (i.e. weekly/bi-weekly)?
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Article] A Future Sight of Vintage on: May 05, 2007, 02:48:26 am
Mindcensor is probably more fitting into Stax archetype due to the unusual CMC. Also, I wouldn't agree with the 'cycle - sac land' card being viable at all. Yixlid is much more likely to see good amount of play than that...thing.
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Article] Another Ichorid Piece on: May 03, 2007, 02:52:03 pm
I'm currently testing 2x mindslicer maindeck, given it's like super-therapy #5,6. I used to run Chosen main and side, but with the current Long builds, it still doesn't seal the game. The problem with your list of creatures is that they never win _now_ like ghoul or flame-kin + zombies does. Mindslicer being an exception here since he's more of a disruption tool than an actual kill condition.
16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Article] Another Ichorid Piece on: May 03, 2007, 03:16:22 am
it's affected by summoning sickness

Haha, did you expect "~this~ doesn't have haste" or something of that sort? Very Happy

Great article, I have to say that I like your list better than Steve's. I'm a big fan of Leyline, it's great against all sorts of things. You seem to present fair judgment of both kill conditions; you are still keeping the ghoul setup, however, wouldn't the slots freed up by including zealot allow for including Unmask as well? I see that you treat unmask rather unfairly because in reality turn 1 hand disruption is still rarely seen even in the current ichorid builds. And great sideboard tech by the way.
17  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] The Ichorid Blitz on: May 02, 2007, 09:37:19 pm
I, too, would have to agree that the deck requires some decision making and 'skill' to pilot. Not that it's huge or anything. The new build is less autopilot that is used to be, however. Little things like bazaaring/cycling at correct times and some subtlety is still present.
18  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] The Ichorid Blitz on: April 30, 2007, 11:39:10 pm
I think that the sideboard options available to us don't address particular hate but rather act as answers to many hate pieces at once. So, for example, a sideboard consisting of 6 lands, 4 CoV, 3 Charm, 2 Contagion would answer leyline/planar void, needle, crypt+welder, jailer, random jitte-wielding animals, etc. Steve's list is also inherently resilient to Extirpate due to the inclusion of Nether Shadow, as well as the fact that Narcomoeba never hits the yard. So, the real question now is, which 13-15 cards can we afford to take out game 2 without diluting the list too much? It seems as if the only things that are eligible for siding out are disruption pieces as well as baubles/nethers.
19  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] The Ichorid Blitz on: April 30, 2007, 03:45:53 am
I, too, would like to hear the logic behind the ghoul kill instead of the flame-kin zealot. For once, flame-kin requires 2 slots less maindeck. Another reason I think he is better is that multiple zombies are harder to deal with, think EtW vs. DSC. For example, CoV is no longer a threat to the win condition, among other things. Also, what is the reason for the lack of petrified fields/what's the plan against wasteland in general? How do you find nether shadows with the deck being faster and all? Are they really required with 4 bridges?
20  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Fallen Empires + Basic Lands Constructed on: April 29, 2007, 05:03:50 pm
Sure I'll play.
21  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays: Long Live Ichorid! on: April 29, 2007, 04:36:03 pm
As i allready pointed, your worst ennemy is clearly wasteland. Thats why i ant a solution against it both maindeck and sideboard. Fish is clearly a matchup i hate actually the most and the hardest to win....

You took the words out of my mouth. They have wastes, jotuns, yixlid, some even side in jittes. I believe that in post-fs environment, combating fish will remain a top priority. What are you suggesting as wasteland solution in side? As well as the solution to new yixlid. Is darkblast finally worth running?
22  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays: Long Live Ichorid! on: April 28, 2007, 11:15:34 pm
From personal experience, I believe that crypt is much less of a threat than waste (assuming one activation of each), since early crypt doesn't hurt that much and later you'd have control over their hand. However, a 1st or 2nd turn waste on bazaar is very hard to recover from, assuming you aren't holding fields. Therefore I believe 4x Field should be included in the new list as well. Now, addressing the claims that post-FS ichorid shouldn't care about the hate and just outrun the opposition: that will work in a rare case where the opposition doesn't try to stop you from winning. However, with it being a better contender we are to see more hate coming out which should eventually balance things out. Therefore stripping new ichorid of defenses and focusing on consistent turn 2 goldfish is just stupid.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Sideboard(ing) Q. on: April 28, 2007, 01:58:43 am
Maybe I'm just missing something, but where is it stated that you may not sideboard more cards that you take out? So you will end up with a larger deck, yes, but is it allowed as long as it's still 60+ cards?
24  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] So Many Insane Plays: Long Live Ichorid! on: April 10, 2007, 12:49:39 pm
Maybe I'm overlooking something here, but what is the use of CoV exactly? The only valid target I can think of is LotV and hardly anything runs it these days. It doesn't stop Crypt and bouncing Needle only buys you 1 Bazaar activation. And you need to actually find a land to play it off. If you're so concerned about Leyline, Emerald charms seem to be much better alternatives. Not to mention that the UB manabase is susceptible to your own Titan.
On Phantasmagorian. I think he's quite solid due to his multi-purposedness. I never tried it in more than 2-of which I think is a good quantity. I will run him over Gigapede any day. I'd run him in Smmenen's list with 3 thug/3 shell/2 phanta and it works very well.
On resilience. Current manaless lists (assuming the same Smmenen's) seem to lack answers to random artifacts, crypt in particular, in game 1. I liked the idea of having access to ancient grudges in the cookie monster lists via a singleton riftstone portal md. Also, I think Leyline maindeck is very often an autowin in mirror as well as it often delays numerous decks for long enough to win even in suboptimal situations. So here's a list I think combines resilience and speed as well as gives more focused sideboarding strategy.

// Lands
    4  Bazaar of Baghdad
    3  Mishra's Factory (1)
    3  Petrified Field
    1  Riftstone Portal

// Creatures
    4  Ichorid
    4  Nether Shadow
    2  Sutured Ghoul
    4  Golgari Grave-Troll
    4  Stinkweed Imp
    2  Golgari Thug
    2  Shambling Shell
    1  Sundering Titan

// Spells
    2  Dragon Breath
    2  Dread Return
    4  Chalice of the Void
    4  Cabal Therapy
    4  Serum Powder
    4  Unmask
    4  Leyline of the Void
    2  Ancient Grudge

// Sideboard
SB: 2  Ancient Grudge
SB: 4  City of Brass
SB: 4  Children of Korlis  (tendrils tech)
SB: 4  Emerald Charm
SB: 1  Ancestor's Chosen (again, tendrils)

Sideboard options are such due to the broken long/tps topdecks when a single card can pretty much win them the game right here. In any case, that's my view on the state of the deck right now; comments are welcome.
25  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Dragon Storm on: April 04, 2007, 05:47:29 pm
That's why you use braingeyser/stroke to deck them instead.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Welder / Staff of Domination : what´s faster? on: July 05, 2006, 12:24:24 pm
Since you are tapping welder as a cost (in this case, a cost of activated ability), there is no way he can 'respond' by tapping welder before the activation. I'm pretty sure that's how it is, correct me if I'm wrong.
27  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Triskelion stacking question on: June 10, 2006, 11:50:09 pm
God I hate certain MWS players.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Triskelion stacking question on: June 10, 2006, 10:01:47 pm
Let's say I have a Trike in play with 1 counter on it, so he's a 2/2. I decide to block a 2/2 creature with it and "in response" to damage, activate trike to deal 1 to opponent. Question is, will the 2 damage still be dealt to the blocked creature? My first though is, since the damage was assigned when my trike was still 2/2, 2 points will go to the guy and i'm free to remove the counter in response to damage. Confirm or deny this please.

What do I see? A mountain range. What was it supposed to be? Hell knows, look at moxen background. Pretty random and abstract; same with lotus.

What about Viashinos and Confusion in the ranks ( {3}{R}{R} Enchantment, "Whenever an artifact, creature, or enchantment comes into play, its controller chooses target permanent another player controls that shares a type with it. Exchange control of those permanents.") ?
