3  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: What formats do you play? on: February 17, 2011, 08:12:45 pm
I play Vintage, Legacy, Cube Draft, and occasionally Standard. My favorite format right now is undoubtedly Legacy.

The Ponder in my decklist should be Merchant Scroll. Also, thanks for writing up the report.

My god this format is degenerate (old news, but it bears repeating). Nevertheless, I had a great time despite getting eviscerated in top 8. Many thanks to Shuffle & Cut for hosting this tournament. Looking forward to the next one.

- John Harduvel

Edit: Concerning the above post, I played Jace Control without Gush.
7  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Ancestral Recall Tournament 9-19-2010 10 proxy Los Angeles/Orange County on: September 21, 2010, 12:08:23 am
I believe there were 17 people in attendance. A full report along with photos should be coming soon.
8  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: Let's Schedule a SoCal Vintage Tournament? on: August 12, 2010, 05:19:28 pm
August 29 isn't a good date, since Knight Ware Inc. is hosting one of their large legacy tournaments on that day.
9  Eternal Formats / Western/Pacific U.S. / Re: VINTAGE TOURNAMENT This Sunday 7/25 in So Cal on: July 27, 2010, 05:50:44 am
I had a great time at this tournament, despite starting off 0-2 and then conceding to friends rounds three and four. It was nice to play Vintage again after having played nothing but Legacy and Cube for the past eight or so months. I had forgotten just how incredibly broken this format is. Thanks to both Matt Sperling and Shuffle & Cut for hosting this tournament. Looking forward to the next one.

The 6th place U/R Painter deck is missing its lands.
11  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: DCI - San Diego Feb 19-21 Legacy Results? on: February 24, 2010, 11:38:21 pm
Top 4 of the Saturday tournament was Bant CounterTop w/ Natural Order vs. Enchantress and Aggro Loam vs. Bant Survival. I'm almost certain that Enchantress lost in the semis, but I didn't stick around long enough to know what happened in the other match. Also, top 8 of the Friday tournament is posted here (, although it was a cut to top 4, not top 8.
12  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Where does FNM, JUDGE foil cards spawn from? on: January 24, 2010, 01:28:56 pm
FNM cards are given out as prizes for playing in FNMs. Judge foils are given only to DCI judges. Judge foils are rarer and worth more than FNM cards 99% of the time. As far as the foil Black Lotus, Force of Will, etc. these cards are made by hand and not actual Wizards of the Coast products.

14  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [TO Report] SoCal Vintage at DMF Sat May 16th - Mishra's Workshop on: May 19, 2009, 07:25:26 pm
I trust that Harduvel put a note on his deck registration sheet that I named his deck, and that he's not trying to take the credit for that. I mean, I know he'd never do that. Just saying.
Lol, I'd never do that. Wink But seriously, let me give credit where credit is due. I'd like to thank LSV for being a deck building genius and coming up with this CounterTop deck. Also, thanks to Chris Tolar for giving me a much needed witty name to put on my deck registration sheet. I will also echo what's been said previously in this thread: major props to Justin for hosting yet another awesome event and to everybody who came. Thanks for keeping the SoCal vintage scene strong!

Congrats to Justin Nguyen for taking home the Workshop. He played really well and definitely deserved it. Also, hats off to Gio for making top 4 with his Painter/Tez deck, showing that Drain decks without Time Vault can indeed put up results.

My only regret on the day was royally punting game 3 of my semifinal match vs. Justin. He had a Windswept Heath on the table, and I, in true genius fashion, decide to swing in with my Yixlid Jailer. Well sure enough, he cracks his Heath and finds Dryad Arbor, sending me on a quick trip to frown town. I even knew he was playing the Arbor because I saw it in our previous games, I just forgot it was a forest. Well, this was a first class learning experience and I'm confident I won't make that same mistake again.
15  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Jan 24th SoCal Library of Alexandria at Dear Mr. Fantazy on: February 03, 2009, 08:38:36 pm
There is a friend of ours who has been playing fish with null rod, waste, daze and FoW since Dark Confidant got printed and has said that this match-up is almost unwinnable and has since given up on it, as the deck attacks from so many angles it is hard to stop it.

Absolutely true. The strength of this deck lies in its ability to dodge the traditional storm combo hate by winning with Oath of Druids. Oath is just so good against both of combo's traditionally bad matchups (workshops and fish). These decks attack combo by cutting off their mana and making it difficult for them to play lots of spells, especially high cost ones, and Oath is a very effective solution to this, as it's a 2-mana spell that wins the game on its own. Although it's not impossible for fish to beat this deck, it's quite a rough matchup, given the multiple angles of attack.

On another note, hats off to Justin for running an awesome tournament. Lookin' forward to the next one!

16  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Why you play vintage? on: February 03, 2009, 08:23:23 pm
I'd say the main reason I play Vintage is because I want to be able to play with all of my favorite cards from over the years. Nostalgia definitely plays a part in it too.

Foil. German. Worldgorger Dragon.

Ahhh, yes. This too.

Mana Crypt is going to kill you every game you play it turn 1.

Mana Crypt and Standstill should never be played in the same deck. Quite the Non-bo.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Oblivion on: August 25, 2008, 06:49:10 pm
Yeah, Oblivion is insanely good. I used to play it a ton, got it for Xbox 360 the day it came out. I ended up quitting due to a glitch in my game, but one of these days I'm sure I'll get back into it.

I watched To Kill a Mockingbird tonight (after having not watched the movie or read the book in ages). Forgot just how amazing it is.

This format sounds like an awesome idea. I've thought of something like this before, but have never tried it. If you do indeed end up running this tourney, make sure to do a write-up afterward. I'd look forward to reading it.
