Ben Tash (Tezz) def. Michael Bolomoth (sp?) (Tezz)

Don't think I've ever seen my name butchered that badly.  It is Michael Bomholt.
2  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Shared Fate deck idea on: October 01, 2007, 03:06:42 pm
Crumbling Sanctuary is really great in conjunction with shared fate.  neither player dies to decking or damage.  So you just have a way to remove your own shared fate ( I like tel-jilad stylus for this) and you win.

This thing is pretty awesome on isochron scepter.
4  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Finalize on: September 05, 2007, 02:11:04 pm
I really like this card, very clean and very powerful.  It can be used to protect your spells as well as pull some really cool stack tricks, for instance you can get sorceries and creatures on top of instants on the stack.

it also allows you to screw up an opponents stack sequence.

It can be used to play around chalice and counterbalance as well.
5  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Report: 6-2 with Iggy for 14th place at the legacy championship on: August 22, 2007, 11:55:11 am
I didn't draw confidant all day, and I was never very happy about bringing him in.  The warrens come in against control along with the chants so you have an easier kill, you will do things like -3 IGG -4 LED +2 warrens +3 chants +2 bounce or something.  I really just boarded on the fly.

I did have a ton of bounce in my board but its all good in different situations, wipe away is for mage, chain is for stuff like leyline, truth is for goblin tokens and general bounce in the main.

the different costs do matter, for instance I board out leyline for chains against the goblins matchup where something like wipe away is way too slow.
6  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Report: 6-2 with Iggy for 14th place at the legacy championship on: August 21, 2007, 03:05:28 pm
Coming into Gencon I was somewhat unprepared, I hadn't played much magic all summer and the last prep work I had done was before GP Columbus.  I scouted out the Legacy prelim on thursday without playing and saw a field full of Thresh and other aggro control decks as well as some combo control decks like Cephalid Breakfast and Alluren.  This made me very anxious about playing Iggy the next day and even lead to some discussion with Roland about playing UG madness the next day instead, but I finally settled on just playing what I know best.

My decklist for Friday was:

4 Flooded Strand
4 Polluted Delta
2 Underground Sea
2 Swamp
1 Island
1 Volcanic Island
1 Scrubland
1 Tundra
4 Lotus Petal
4 Dark Ritual
4 Cabal Ritual
4 Mystical Tutor
4 Infernal Tutor
4 Brainstorm
3 Intuition
4 Ill-Gotten Gains
4 Leyline of the Void
2 Tendrils of Agony
1 Empty the Warrens
1 Orim's Chant
1 Echoing Truth

2 Empty the Warrens
3 Orim's Chant
4 Dark Confidant(didn't like this guy)
2 Wipe Away
3 Chain of Vapor
1 Tendrils of Agony

I apologize ahead of time for not remembering my opponents names, Gencon is always a blur and I usually meet 20 new people a year at these things.

Round 1 vs Stifle Dreadnought

This is a bad matchup for me seeing as they run eight maindeck stifle effects plus force and daze

I don't remember a whole lot of this match except for getting triple dazed game one and losing then winning because of a play error on his side game two then losing game three very quickly.

Not a good start, I talk to a lot of teammates and friends and all the good players seem to have lost round one so I don't feel so bad.

Round 2: mono red burn

If you know what you are doing with iggy this matchup is 90 percent in your favor. I went 2-0 here and Orim's chant definitely proved its worth by shutting down his red blasts and fireblast recursion during the iggy loop.

Round 3: Solidarity

game 1 I open with Leyline and iggy on turn two, he almost recovers but he needed another turn

game two is similar except I win with goblin tokens instead of tendrils.

Solidarity is usually a terrible matchup for iggy but Leyline broke its back, as it would continue to do the rest of the day.

Round 4: mono black Sui variant

game one I combo out pretty quickly with little trouble because he kept a disruption light hand.

game two is really close he opens with double leyline puts pressure on with sarcomancy tokens and hymms while I try to build up enough for a tutor chain win, mid game I tutor up echoing truth and hit his sarcomancy tokens wich brings him down to three before he drops one of the flying zombie knights which finishes me off.

Game three I win quickly with the classic play out your artifacts strategy that works so well against discard.

round 5: Threshold

Another bad matchup that I win on the back of leyline.

I can't remember game one but it involved the a second turn mind twist with me winning a few turns later.

game 2 I mulled to five cards they were 2x lotus petal, dark ritual, empty the warrens and leyline, he doesn't have the force and my team of goblins beats up his puny 1/1 non threshold guys for the win.

Round 6: Alix Hatfield playing Cephalid breakfast

This seems like it would be a bad matchup for me but it turns out leyline pretty much destroys this deck.  I got leyline in my opening seven both games and pulled some chant tricks and went in with goblins, I can't remember the details but it was very one sided in my favor.  I'm sure it plays out differently without the leylines but again they were incredible

Round 7:  Theshold

I could have either been matched against this or the ichorid deck that made top eight, so as luck would have it I get paired against another thresh instead of a crazy easy matchup like ichorid.

This match I see no leylines and my hands are mediocre without much protection, he takes me down quickly in two games, I'm now out of contention for top 8 but I play the last round anyway.

Round 8: blue white homebrew aggro control

This match went to three games and chant ended up being pretty important for my win as well as leyline I don't really remember it very well other than I had to play around force while facing a team of really big flying dudes. I end up winning.

So I went 6-2 having played against zero goblins and only two decks that didn't run a full package of blue control, so while I did not top 8 like last year I'm almost happier about this year because I feel I proved that iggy can be resilient in the face of a meta full of decks that are usually considered very bad matchups.

I also think that anyone playing an iggy variant that doesn't run Leyline main is playing a sub-optimal deck. Leyline is just sick in the format and in my mind has cemented its place in the main deck.

7  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Gencon performance on: August 20, 2007, 11:10:02 am
In the legacy champs I went 6-2 and ended up 14th with Iggy in a meta bursting with control decks, I will write up a report later this week, all I have to say for now is that Leyline of the Void is completely awesome and is never coming out of my builds.
8  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Weird People on: April 04, 2007, 01:21:21 pm
Its hard not to notice that strategy games like magic attract people on the fringes of the mental health spectrum, and its fine when people can find something healthy and fun to do when they have those kind of problems.

What I really dislike is when people act intentionally strange, all it does is enforce the negative stigma associated with the game and makes you look immature.  If you have any interest in the future of the game and the health of the community it is in your best interests to act like a reasonable and thoughtful person.

When you sit down for a match, try not to behave in a way that would get you ignored/shunned in a conversation, kicked out of a classroom, or fired from a job.

10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: You MUST take Anti-Cancer Vaccine!!! on: February 05, 2007, 12:15:51 pm
Except that most of the vaccines required are contagious easily airborn tranmitted or from others not washing hands, bad sewage systems, etc (see Polio, measles, etc).  I.E. you just get them from "living".   HPV (unless I'm mistaken) is only tranmitted sexually (mouth, oral, anal, etc).  So for the woman to compare Polio to HPV is a little off-base.  Just like you don't get aids from contaminated water, you won't get HPV.

I don't know about you but I certainly consider sexual contact a pretty fundamental part of "living".
11  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Ill-Gotten Gains selection order on: January 19, 2007, 04:08:03 pm
The active player selects his cards first and the other player does get to see them before choosing theirs.

16  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Report] First place at the meandeck legacy open on: December 18, 2006, 12:18:55 pm
So I wake up Saturday morning completely exhausted having been to a couple parties the previous two nights.  I manage to drive out of my way to pick up Hi-Val at his place in oxford but realize when I get there that he was already in Columbus for the holiday.  I load myself up on Dr Pepper and coffee and make the drive up to Columbus for the tournament.

I want to apologize ahead of time for not remembering any of my opponents names.

Round 1 vs casual player with homebrew deck.

The round was a bye, he wasn't playing anything competitive but he was a very nice guy and I hope he comes back for the next tournament.

Round 2 vs RGSA

hey look another bye round, I really love playing against aggro, I roll him game one and two without seeing much of the deck.

Round 3 vs Spencer's completely weird friend with Life.dec

I don't want to piss off Spencer here but I have to preface this by saying that this guy was very bizarre, he actually creeped me out so much that it affected my play.

Game one he plays a bunch of vials and only one half of the guys he needs for the combo, I mess up an intuition because I'm creeped out and win a turn slower than I should have but still win.

Game two is crazy he starts with turn one vial and tormods crypt, turn two he plays meddling mage on tendrils then turn like four he has active combo with a sac outlet so he can gain infinite life at instant speed.  On the end of his turn I dark rit into sudden death on half of his combo so he can't go off. I actually targeted the one that gets a bigger butt when targeted but neither of us noticed until after the game, I'll chock this one up to the guys weirdness aura messing with my head.  On his next turn I cast wipe away on his endstep targetting his tormods crypt so he can't crypt me, then on my turn I chain of vapor the mage and go off.  So to recount that I had both split second cards exactly when I needed them and a chain of vapor in order to win.  I was pretty lucky that game.

Round 4 vs sligh(this is not the same guy who made top 8)

Game one he opens fast and I open slow, his ball lightning on turn two puts me into a win now position and I brainstorm into land, leyline, leyline ugh I lose this game but its the only one I lose the whole tournament so I can't complain.

Game two and three I win on turn two like a champ.

Round 5 vs Spencer with BW Pikula

we ID

Round 6 vs Nathan Dutton with goblins

This guy is a good friend of mine who Ive been playing magic with since the game came out so I was glad we were both in a position to ID for this round.  I also want to congratulate him on the top 8 he put in a lot of time testing goblins for this.

The top eight is:

4 goblin decks, 2 BW pikula decks, one burn deck and me. These are all really good matchups for me so I'm psyched.

Round one vs Goblins

I don't remember this guys name but he was a really nice guy and very talkative and funny.

Game one I look at my opening seven, its a turn one kill but I have no land and no petal, I figure I should draw into a land or petal in the first three turns and be fine against goblins but I spend some time deciding if I really want to risk it.  he goes mountain fanatic I take my turn and draw a land, how lucky I win first turn.  he jokes about me taking so long to decide to keep a first turn kill I don't tell him about the topdeck until the end of the match.

Game two he gets down turn two pillar but I still win on turn four by playing something like petal, petal, dark rit, cabal rit with thresh, tendrils for 10, igg, dark rit cabal rit tendrils.  I've said this before but pillar without additional disruption is pretty lame against iggy.

As a side note I found it interesting that all four goblins decks in the top 8 lost in the first round of the top 8.

Round two vs Mark Trogdon with burninator

game one I win turn two after he suspends a rift bolt.

game two I win turn three with him slightly short of bolt/fireblasting me to death

Finals vs Spencer with BW Pikula

Myself and my buddy Nathan had been openly dogging on BW pikula earlier in the day so I kind of ate my words when two of them made top 8.  I think Jotun Grunt is an amazing addition to the deck.

Game one I execute my usual strategy against BW and drop a bunch of fetches without cracking them and artifact mana sources, he pulls into very little relevant disruption but puts me on a clock with grunt, but according to plan I topdeck infernal the turn before I lose.

Game two is similar to game one minus him actually putting pressure on me.

So I go home with $200 dollars in my pocket after a day of mostly goldfishing.  Spencer laments living up to Steve's prediction of him coming in second but I'm sure that 120 bucks helps sooth that pain pretty well.

I was very pleased with our first meandeck legacy tournament, the turnout was higher than expected and we plan on having a lot more of these in the future.

19  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Mind's Desire, Island, and the Golden Rule of Magic on: December 13, 2006, 12:03:40 pm
103.2. When a rule or effect says something can happen and another effect says it can't, the "can't" effect wins. For example, if one effect reads "You may play an additional land this turn" and another reads "You can't play land cards this turn," the effect that keeps you from playing lands wins out. Note that adding abilities to objects and removing abilities from objects don't fall under this rule. See rule 407, "Adding and Removing Abilities."
20  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Diablo II - Does anyone have characters on USEast/USWest? on: December 07, 2006, 02:04:51 pm
Man I loved that game.  I had a crazy necromancer, he was an auramancer, so he was specced summoning with a bunch of runeword gear that gave him auras

I had like might, fanatasism, thorns, spirit of the barbs, and I had enigma so I could teleport around.  I used to solo8 player hell bail with a mob of summons and skeletons

the build was awesome but completely gear dependant.  you needed bramble for your might merc, enigma, the club runeword that gave you fanatasims, the ring that gave you spirit of the barbs, then like zillions of + all skill/summoning skill stuff so that you had a big enough army.

I really wish they would have given us a necromancer class in world of warcraft, the warlock is more like a mage with a pet, I want to swing into battle with an army of undead again.

Your political compass

Economic Left/Right: -5.13
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.21

looks like I align pretty well with most of the TMDers
22  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Which One Card Changed Your Magic Life The Most? on: December 01, 2006, 11:25:44 am
Lions Eye Diamond.

I played the game as a teenager back in the ice age era of black weenie necropotence decks and then quit the game until college.  I picked the game back up with Odyssey block and when torment was released the first thing I thought of was how awesome madness was with LED.  This started my love affair with broken shit you can do with LED, it got me interested in vintage where LED was crazy with Yawgwill and eventually led me to legacy where 4xLED allowed me to create Iggy-Pop.

I love LED because when I was a kid playing magic it was like the shittiest rare you could ever pull and people would use it as an example of the worst card ever, and now it is on the vintage restricted list next to the most powerful cards in the game.  I love the way magic is re-invented every year and can turn some old shitty relic of a card into a crazy power house.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Re: Battle of Wits Deck Challenge on: November 29, 2006, 02:39:49 pm
My favorite gifts piles for battle of wits are these:

recoup, reanimate, academy rector, cabal therapy.

to cut out red you can do this:

reanimate, animate dead, rector, therapy

25  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Better than YawgWill on: October 19, 2006, 01:12:45 pm
How about something with a drawback thats REALLY hard to work around.

Yawgmoths tease
some apropriate mana cost prefferably 4+ mana

Split second
You win the game

When you play this spell you lose the game.

Its an "I win" card that can't be responded to and has a storm like trigger that makes you lose the game.  I guess it would combo with Djinn Illuminatus, Mirrari, Platinum Angel and Mischievous Quanar but those all cost enough that I don't see a big problem.  Whether it actually adds anything to the game or is a hindrance like donate is the other question.

This would actually combo too well with angels grace, oops.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: [Report] Roanoke, 1st on: October 09, 2006, 10:28:44 am
Once again goblins proves it is the best deck in the format.  I'm naturally curious about the iggy deck day two, was it a traditional build or were there some noticable deviations from my list?
27  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: [Report] Ninth in Flint with Ill Gotten Gains Tendrils Combo on: September 22, 2006, 12:05:49 am
You didn't like leyline because you cut mystical tutor.  Mystical tutor is the card that truly enables an early Ill-gotten gains with a leyline out.

Also about chrome mox.  I played it in very early builds and cut it for two reasons, one it is effectively -2 to threshold and two I play 4 mysticals so the card disadvantage generated by having both of those in the deck sucks pretty hard.

The inclusion of careful study and deep analysis seem like your are geared towards a much slower combo, in that case I think Anusiens suggestion of veggie tendrils is pretty good.  Of course high tide is also a very good option.

Way to go on placing decently with the deck, I like seeing people succeed with IGGy.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Mass Ghost Quarter on: September 07, 2006, 02:33:51 pm
this is really good with squandered resources or rain of filth.  Not to mention second sunrise and planar birth, that a lot of mana.
