Hooly Jesus!

What kind of turn out do you guys usually have?  I have a whole SoCal T1 crew, and we'd love to make it, the only problem is we're an OC team.  If you guys usually have people willing to play, we'll probably come, maybe even pre-register (If you take registration over the phone, sorry, no way I'll come out to downy to save $5).

I'll tell you right now, getting people to turn out for these things will be easier said than done...I've tried for about a year now.

Hmmm, wow, I grew up in Downey.  Keep us up to date on T1 happenings; I'd love to have a place to play when I am back in town.

@Tracerbullet: Are you part of the same metagame that "brianb" plays in?  I cant remember the name of that shop right now.

wow, if u guys have AIM, i could talk to yall right now. Things are goin good right now. BTW, how many people do u think u guys could bring in?

So far, it is pretty much garenteed that we will have too many peeps, so pre-reg is the only way for sure. By the thursday be4 the tourney, we will probably be out of room

How many people COULD I bring?  Upwards of 9.  How many people will more likely be interested?  Probably about 3-4.  The problem is, it's a good drive, and many of us have things to do on Sunday.  In addition, that's a pretty high entry fee.

Yeah, Brian and I play together.  We used to play at Blurry Eyed Games, in Fountain Vally, but that went out of business in March.  Since then, we've wandered from place to place, looking for good places to play.  If you guys can get a good turnout, that'd be pretty awesome.

A tourney in Downey would be cool although $20 is too much.  Things get a little too intense with that much on the line.  I'd be happier playing with nominal entry fees--$5 tops.  For prizes, just take all the entry fee money, turn it into store credit (so the store makes out a bit), and divide it among the top 3 finishers.  There's no way you're going to get any of the more casual players--the players who don't play lots of t1 (yet) and who don't have the goodies to play optimal decks.  As for the players that have the power and really like serious t1, you don't need a big purse to draw them.  They're usually just happy to have any kind of organized event.  I'm moving to Irvine on Sunday (this coming a week before you start), which is about a half hour from downey.  If it were a little lower stakes, I'd probably go and bring TracerBullet, T-Bagger, Neenjafus, or any others in our little t1 clique along for the ride.

Speaking of my new place and the orange county type 1 posse, I'd be cool with having people come over and play weekly.  If we could get enough members (we'll call ourselves a team) to have 4-8 show up each week, that'd be a lot of fun.  It would probably be a weekday night that worked for everyone--or possibly weekend days when we could use the apt clubhouse, which is really nice (lots of tables and a bit roomier than my apt) and overlooks the pool.  I'll talk to pat (tracerbullet) about it and post something over in the community section if it might get off the ground.

I completely agree with Brian although I am very sad that he left me off the team, I am interested in playing but will not play regularly due to the high entry fee and the fact that I don't need any of those cards (unless the moxen are Beta  ).  I also have another friend that would play regularly if the entry fee wasn't so high.  Go team blurry eyed!

well, yeah i do agree about the entry fee, but the store is a bit greedy. Also, do any of you go to Frank and Son's Collectables. If so, it would be great to meet any of you. Its kind of hard to  find a game being a 14 year old T1 player

I frequent frank and sons. There are various people who play type 1 there, some with power. I won't be there for a while, but in September I will go regularly. I was curious, are you trying to have the people there set up anorganized tournament, or just use the side tables to play casual games?

I go to Franks but not to play.  It’s just too far.  Tracerbullet and I were trying to get franks to hold type 1 but we couldn't get enough people.  Wizards in Westminster is willing to hold a type 1 tournament if we can get at least 8 people.  Let me know if you would be interested in playing there.

Alright everybody. Fuck it, the tourneys are off. And I am personally am fed up with this store. The players there suck (no offense), and the Judges (not real judges) and organizers dont know shit.

I am currently looking for a place that supports T1 play, so feel free to enlighten me on a place to play.

And Im sorry for putting so much god damn effort and will into trying to make this tourney a success, only to have the organizers lie about the player count, making me believe that there was actually a hope in hell I would get to play serious T1.

Sorry and later,

what?  the $15 entry fee didn't tip you off that this was just some kind of moneymaking scheme that was never going to work out?  i could have told you that 2 weeks ago.

On the upside, tracer is working on getting something together in the westminster huntington area.

Darkstar was pretty cool; I used to make sure I visited there whenever I went down to LA.  The last time I saw it, it had a sign on the door that said "We have moved to another strip mall 2 blocks north", but I didnt see any sign of them there either.  I assume they are out of business, but that sign still puzzles me.

Anyone know the story here?

Story, Long Version:  The Darkstar's land lease was expiring.  The owner of the land wanted to build a new Ralph's Grocery Store there.  So, long story short, they were evicted.  In the months preceding their move, the city shut down thier computers due to zoning restrictions.  They found the new place, on Brookhurst and Garfield, and had a new contract stating that the owner of that land would build a new room on the back, designed for the computers.  That never happened.  While they were still in the process of negotiating with the owner (about a month after moving out of the old place), they get hit with an audit.  For the last 7 years.  Needless to say, being the intellegent, buisiness minded people they were, they had somehow lost their reciepts.  End Story.

Wow, nice story.

Whenever I was there on weekends, there always seemed to be plenty of people playing all sorts of stuff; it looked like their business was diverse enough that they weren't going to get caught up in a flameout (like it wasnt all about selling Pokemon to the kiddies for instance).  As a matter of fact, I remember before they took up about half the space they ended with; I figured their business was doing well.

Anyway, here is my list of places to shop in LA; the last note seems to be from Dec 2001 so it's not exactly up to date.  Some of them are board games also, not necessarily MtG.

Alakazam 4237 Campus, Irvine
Otherworld 1824 N Placentia, Placentia
Darkstar (ooops!)
All Star Games 2773 S Diamond Bar Blvd, Diamond Bar
Game Castle 2514 Chapman, Fullerton
Blurry Eyed Games (oops!)
Brookhurst Hobby 12188 Brookhurst, Garden Grove

If anyone has recommendations, I'd be happy to hear them.

My info, about 1 year or so old:

Alakazam: The owner is kinda cool, and they do tend to have some nice random stuff but their prices are a bit high and no play area. If you are in the area stop by to check their "really nice stuff" binder  but don't make a special trip to see them.

Game Castle: They have a play area, but unless they changed things within the last year or so, they aren't even worth stopping by if you are in the area. Mostly a pokemon place, I believe they were having an open or maybe 1.5 tourney...expect lots of kids.

Brookhurst Hobby: They didn't have crap for cards and I believe they only held pokemon tourneys

Hope that helps ya out and saves a trip

Some prices are high, some are good (talking T2 here).  The best part for T1 players though is the "special binder".  Last time I was there; they had moved some of the comic books out of the front and set up two tables to play on.  Its also right next to an In-N-Out Burger; another plus.

Otherworld is now called End Game or something; but they had a large stock with good prices last time I was there.  I'm not sure how good business is; so you might want to check quickly if you are interested. Wink

As for the others, the Game Castle has a huge selection of D&D and Brookhurst Hobby is pretty much everything but MtG.  (Although they do have a very dusty pile of all sorts of other CCGs that they never have discounted; thus never sold.)  All Star in Diamond Bar is on the list because they have a great selection of hard-to-find German boardgames.

But anyway, where are the LA guys buying stuff / playing these days?

I know of two places to buy cards in the LA area.

Legacy - 123 W. Wilson, Glendale, CA 91203
They used to have T2 FNM, but due to low turnout, it stopped. I always asked them to run a Type 1, but I'm probably one of the only Type 1 players in the area. They do however, usually, have a good selection of cards if you are looking for something in particular.

Then there's King's Comics in Burbank, I know they have tourneys during the weekend.

You buy at Frank and Sons show or from ebay...that is where I got about 90% of my old stuff...and I was speaking with a T1 player in mind when I made my comments. Glad they got a play table finally at alakazaam...and I believe they have another location in Costa Mesa that I just remembered, never been there but When I worked for evil Gateway, we did their computer setup
