SO anyways, the tournament that I announced but nobody replied to occurred today. There were fewer people than we'd wanted, but some folks who were gonna come down from Seattle didn't make it, inexplicably. Consequently, the tournament still ran but the prize structure was reduced. No big deal, at least I still got to play. I took the day off work for this@!!!
It really all went down like this. 12 people playing, I was playing Keeper (!) in a totally unknown metagame. I sideboarded against the things I feared most (mono-blue, suicide black) and brought myself up to date on how to handle Worldgorger Dragon. As it turns out, none of that was necessary at all. On a side note, my Time Walk hasn't shown up in the mail yet so I had to play without it. Pity.
Round 1: Keeper vs. some weird artifact deck with Metalworkers and Tangle Wire
T$%#%#!@#@@! Tangle Wire. That card slowed me down big time. No big deal, though, I was able to keep him at bay long enough to let the Tangle Wires exhaust themselves and resume a Morphling beatdown. His kill mechanisms were Juggernauts and Karn and the like, and he had no counterspells of any type. Once I dropped Moat it was an exercise in futility (besides, of course, the Black Vise I handled later on). Morphling took me to an honorable victoly both times.
Round 2: Keeper vs. Big Fat Green
One sure sign you've got the metagame all wrong - when you find yourself wishing you had a god damn Peacekeeper. I'm not much interested in discussing this match as I compounded play mistake upon play mistake and lost to Verdant Force beatdown. I made at least 4 major mistakes during one game. My deck was being very forgiving but it wasn't enough. I was mad at myself for this one.
Round 3: Keeper vs. mono-red
This was kind of a janky red, using Seal of Fire AND Shock, and not enough Red Elemental Blasts in the sideboard. I drop CoP: Red all three games and win two out of three. I over-extend by dropping a Morphling first game and get pimpslapped by a Price of Progress. He was running considerably more burn than creatures, interestingly. Second game I go straight for the jugular, Tutoring for a CoP: Red and playing it safe until I can drop Morphling. Third game I get into a dominant position with Morphling and ask for a concession. He's a friend of mine, so he asks what I have in my hand. I reveal three FoW and three Mana Drains to complement the CoP: Red on the table. He scoops.
Round 4: Keeper vs. real Stompy
This is closer to the actual Stompy molds you see here on tmd.com, except it ran Vine Dryads. I actually lost a game because I got punished with a Rancor'd Vine Dryad when I was mostly tapped out and had no Zuran Orb in play. Other than that, Moat and Abyss pretty much let me have my way with him. Maindecking Moat was about the best thing I did all day.
Round 5: Keeper vs. some weird artifact deck with Metal Worker and Tangle Wire.
We're in the finals here, Tangle Wire drags the opening game out to 35 minutes before I finally win with Morphling beatdown. He had Necro out, and was flailing desperately close to death. I Tutor for Fire/Ice and light him up. He uses his Claws of Gix to save his life, but the loss of permanents swings the balance to my control and Morphling finishes the job. I side in Power Artifact/Grim Monolith here since we're running out of time and proceed to win on turn 5 or 6 since he has no way to stop me. I was topdecking like a mofo.
Round 6: Keeper vs. Fruity Pebbles(?!)
Enduring Renewal? I haven't seen that card for like 5 years. Nonetheless, here it is again, and he somehow managed to sweep his way through. I had to win 3/5 here as I was in the loser's bracket. I win the first game with very little interaction from him as he apparently is mana screwed and proceeds to Mana Crypt himself to near-death. I ensure the job is done by Tutoring for Yawgmoth's Will and playing Fire/Ice from the graveyard for the final 2 points of damage. Amusingly enough, every single time he flipped the coin it came up heads. This is about 10 flips and two different coins we're talking about here. Second game I side in the combo and I blister his ass with a massive Stroke. Third round ends just as mercilessly and I claim first prize. $50 store credit goes towards various munchies, a Candelabra of Tawnos and something else (haven't decided yet, so it's sitting on my tab). Fruity Pebbles took second for $30 store credit and picks up some random Urza's Saga delectables.
Fruity Pebbles?!
Notes: I made about 60% of my sideboard to deal with mono-blue and suicide black. Neither of those decks made any sort of appearance at all. Groovy. I really don't know much about what showed up except for what I mentioned. I was the only one with power in my deck. Interesting.
