Another week, another set of tourneys.. Instead of my usual Keeper round, I decided to play something a bit different. On Saturday (heavy aggro meta) I took a sub-optimal Academy build, and for Sunday (more control/reanimator) I took Gro-A-Tog.
---------------- Saturday:
We had 18 people show up for the tournament (woot!!) and it was a great mix of experienced and inexperienced folks, it's good to see a lot of returning players, and a few new faces each time.
Ok, I'm not even going to go through the rounds, let's just say my draws were for #$%^ and my opponents were bored out of their skulls while I searched in vain for a way to kill them. I used the standard NeoAcademy list, with these substitutions:
-2x Candelabra (don't have any) -1x Helm of Awakening (only have 2)
+3x Opt (yea, suboptimal)
I went 2-3-0 for the day. My two match wins were solid though, 3rd turn kills both games. My experience with this deck is extremely limited (ie: 4 goldfish games the previous night), but I will make this statement - The Candelabras are NOT optional. I would have one at least one other match had my Opt been a candelabra instead.
The winners of the tournament were: #1 Kenny - Reanimator / Discard #2 Mike - Enchantress / Ambassador #3 Phillip - Artifacts/Counters/Phyrexian Processor #4 Robert - TnT, unpowered
I introduced the store to Swiss rounds, and got a thumbs up from the players for it (they get to play more games). So I'll be setting the store up with DCI Reporter and teaching the owners how to use it. If there is any easier Swiss pairing software PLEASE let me know, DCI Reporter has a crappy user interface.
------------------ Sunday:
I took Gro-A-Tog to the Highpoint tournament which usually features a couple mono-U and Parfait players, and some random aggro.
My modifications to the net list: -1 Cunning Wish +1 Berserk
Round 1: Sam - B/Discard/Beats
Sam put together an "anti-control" aggro deck with Duresses, Hymns, and graveyard recycling creatures.
Game 1: Deck worked like a charm, second turn Dryad turned evil by turn 4, and a Berserk ended the match on turn 5.
Game 2: My only loss of the day, I was land flooded (how does that happen in this deck?). He ran me over with some 3/1 recurring creature with haste.
Game 3: His discard slowed me down, and his beats put me on a clock, but I got a dryad to stick, and Ebony Charmed his recurring creatures. He chumps a few times, and I counter any more resistance. A turn or two later I swung for the win.
Round 2: Julian - Parfait
Game 1: Ouch.. lemme just say this deck is an auto-win against Parfait. I may get some criticism for that, but I was wracking my brain trying to come up with a win strategy for Parfait, and none came to mind.
I counter some early plays (Scroll Rack) while I set up. Dryad grows quickly around turn 5, and I start swinging. He forgets his Zuran is down when I come across with a 16/16 berserked beast.
Game 2: More of the same. He drops a Moat, I charm it, he swords a few Dryads, and I topdeck more. Eventually I get her up to 10/10 and Berserk her for the final swing. He creates a pegasus and chumps... I remind him that Berserk bestows trample. He nods, stunned.
Round 3: Tyler - Stompy
Tyler forgot to bring his real decks, and built stompy 15 minutes before the tourney. But considering he's 2/0, that's not so bad..
Game 1: He drops some wild dogs, I drop a Library. I play really slowly to gain cards, but can't continue that trend once my life dips below 14. Then I drop out a Dryad and 'Tog, start killing off his creatures and go nutz with the Dryad. Swing a few turns later for the win. I recall this game being kinda close.. I think we traded blows until I was at 2 life, then I had to hold back until I could take him out in one swing.
Game 2: This game was a runaway. By turn 3 I had a 5/5, and ate his dogs and rancored elves. By 5th turn I was trying to swing for the win (needed 15, could only get it to 12). He delayed me with a fog effect, and I swung for the win next turn.
Luckly I did not get paired with the mono-u, which would have been a more difficult matchup, as I'm not yet familiar enough with this deck to play mind games.
So I took 1st, and got $13, enough to finish out a Dragon.dec
------------ For the benefit of the readers in the area, the Highpoint meta consists of the following decks:
1x Mono-U/Fairies/Morphling 1x U/B Counters/Morphling 1x WW 1x Reanimator 1x B/Discard/Rack 2x Parfait 3x Sligh
Not all were in attendance today, but that's what I've encountered over the past month.
Thanks for reading! I'm out of town the next few weeks, but perhaps I can convince one of the other regulars to write me a report.. (Brandon? Phillip?)
