I tip my hat to Stefan Reek who played Griffen combo. This is a deck i built and played a year and half ago for fun to a 3-2 record. I see a number of combo decks did come out to play. Is that why mono-blue did so well? I do not see a lot of bad match ups for it.
The mono-brown is interesting and sports a number of similar cards to my own. Interesting that he added Petrified Fields. We tested them but found that overall they were not useful enough. I would like to hear his thoughts. Also we tested Bridge (obviously as we use Skullcaps) but never wanted them main deck over other options.
I believe as you do Morphling, Trix/Rector is a house. One of the Toronto crowd was planning on building a version but I really do not want to play against it. I am busy testing Bargain/Rector ( like the old Bargain decks of old ) but i'm finding it a turn or two too slow to be consistent.
I for one, love the randomness of the field.
One of these days Zherbus will actually post my article on the combo decks out there ... it should fuel some thought.

A SHITLOAD of luck.

You forgot something:

more SHITLOAD of luck,
he beated 2 u/b/w trixes, which defeniatly is a bad matchup for him, and he beated me, another bad matchup for him...

I will post a short report here, as MorePhling alraeady said, I played monobrown control. The deckname is MUD by the way. And I would appreciate it if it’s refferd to as "MUD".

MUD (2003-04-13)

4 Mishra's Worksthop
4 Wasteland
4 Petrified Field
3 City of Traitors
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Strip Mine
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Vault
1 Grim Monolith
4 Metalworker
4 Sphere of Resistence
3 Winter Orb
3 Powder Keg
4 Tangle Wire
4 Ensnaring Bridge
4 Smokestack
4 Grafted Skullcap
3 Karn, Silver Golem
1 Memory Jar

Sideboard:

4 Jester's Cap
3 Cursed Totem
3 Tormod's Crypt
2 Null Brooch
2 Bottle Gnomes
1 Powder Keg

First round: U/G (chapin?) gro (didnt take names and life totals)

This is a very bad matchup for him and the match pretty much went as can be expected. Pre-sb he couldnt keep up to a smokestack and some spheres. The only dryad I saw did me 3 damage total.
The second game he was able to counter a few of my early spells, thanks to multiple force of will a foil and a daze. I also saw a ophidian somewhere but he was pretty surprised when I started block ing it with a metalworker. After a smokestack found it's way onto the tble this game was mine too.

1-0 (2-0)

Second Round, Mike (u/b/w trix)

We both mulliganned first game and kept the 6-card hand. I went wasteland-go, which isn't really the start you are hoping for. In his turn he played something like Land, Mox, Lotus, Necro, and he used his Necro to draw 15. Next turn I played a workshop and used it to play a Sphere. Since he didnt have the force it resolved. Next turn he played Academy, which I wasted in response to his second Mox. At the end of turn there was an Illusions on his side and he Necroed for 15 or 20 (not sure). Since he was tapped out and I had a sphere, he couldn't counter so I played a tangle wire and said "go" again. Thanks to the Wire he wasn’t able to donate the turn after and he used his turn to play out a lot of mana artifacts. In my 3rd turn I played a Winter Orb and he scooped the turn after because he wouldn't be able to donate the Illusions anymore.

He didn’t have much mana-sources second game and I took advantage of this with a wasteland and s sphere, soon followed by the second one. That pretty much decided the game. A little later I also had two Skullcaps on the table and he scooped.

2-0 (4-0)

Third Round, Auratog-Enchantress

In theory this shouldn’t really be a threat, but the games were very close. In game 1 I couldn’t find a Smokestack or a Karn after some early disruption and this gave him the time to stabilise. At some point he started drawing lots of cards with Auratog, Rancor and two Argothian Enchantresses. But he couldn’t get rid of my two Bridges and he scooped soon after a I played a winter orb which denied him of most of his mana.

In game 2 I went into Aggro-Mode with an early Karn. But before I could do lethal damage he found a birds to block, and later on he enchanted it with a Rancor so he was able to kill other artifacts too if I attack with them. Meanwhile I was really low on mana. My workshop got wasted and all I had left were 2 Moxes. He sealed one of them, which made it even scarier. But I topdecked Academy and in two turn I played a lot of artifacts and attacked him with it for lethal damage.

3-0 (6-0)

Fourth Round, U/B control

I drew a god hand first game, first turn Workshop, Mox and Smokestack, second turn Skullcap and Sphere. Third turn I played a Karn and fourth turn it was all over…

Game 2 was a little more exciting since he played a Phyrexian Arena very early and because of it he was able to play a land every turn and keep up with my smokestack. But at some point I putted the second counter on my Smokestack and he was left with zero permanents a few turn later. It took some time to play out this game because I couldn’t find a Karn, be all he could do was draw, discard,go because of the smokestack/sphere lock. When I found my karn I did around 35 damage.

4-0 (8-0)

Fifth Round, Rudy (MoreFling in TMD) with GAT

Before sideboard this matchup is like 75-25%, if not higher. The game was over pretty quick after I resolved a smokestack (second, maybe third turn). There’s just not much GAT can do about it pre-sb.

Game 2 featured my first game loss. He Fow’ed my first turn Memory Jar and duressed a Skullcap away. I topdecked another skullcap and slowly started getting in control when he was able to play a Hury’s Recall off a lotus. He did it in response to the Skullcap ability so I had to bury all my artifacts (return all to hand, discard hand). Soon after he won when he played his third Ancestral off a Will and had a Tog with could get big enough to kill me.

I played first third game and started very quick. He never really got into this game because I had him locked very early. He scooped…

5-0 (10-1)

Last Round, U/r control

I already saw him play some games and knew what to expect. I was a fully powered control deck with strange card choices: tormod’s crypt, control magic and standstill (without mandlands) maindeck. This match started dramaticly after I mulliganned into a hand worser than my first one. I kept it and wasn’t able to put pressure on him. I was able to stop 1 Disk with a keg, but the second one destroyed like 10 permanents on my side. After he played an Ophidian and showed 3 Mana Drains I scooped.

Game 2 went a lot better, a second turn Karn, started beating him together with a Bridge (I made sure to keep 4 cards in hand) He had to tap out for a Morphling (after draining something, tangle wire maybe) and took some more damage. After a desperate timetwister on his side I attacked for the win with a hand like this: Smokestack, Skullcap, Karn, Jar.

Game 3 was pretty close. He somehow proceeded to draw into 3 Force of Wills in the top 15 cards of his library. That’s why 2 Jester’s Caps and a Null Brooch didn’t see play. Soonafter he drained into a Morphling and I played a Skullcap. He proceeded to do me 5 damage every turn and I couldn’t find an answer. The turn after he killed me I would have drawn into Jar, which would lead to a lot more artifacts, including a Bridge. One more turn and I would have won…

5-1 (11-3)

The deck proved itself but I still can’t believe I lost the last match. That’s where my deck screwed up and his deck did the opposite…

Koen

Are you talking about a monobrown or a U/R version?

Fields are amazing in mono-brown. You need another land beside Workshop, Traitors, Wasteland and the restricted ones. Ans field almost copy these. Sometimes getting back a waste is amazing and other times you need your Workshop that got wasted, back.

Bridge are a vital part of this deck I used to play 3 but even went up to 4 since you most of the time rahter have 2 than 0

And in this deck you really dont need the skullcaps for them to work, you should be emptying your hand around third turn anyway.

Of course. I'm thinking with R splash for Welders. No blue. And it makes perfect sense for mono-brown to use Fields. I'm still not crazy about Ensnaring Bridges as I think there are better options but I like the deck and the report. Mud sounds good to me. Congrats on a fine tournament. I need to rethink my deck now

This is a small report of me playing GAT yesterday. I didn't take much notes,
since it's essentially not a deck I generally play, or will play again in the near future.
This is not because it's a bad deck, but I just don't own the cards anymore.

so, leaving out all the useless info, we'll move on to the matches.
you can see my decklist above.

Round 1, Brynn Jansen, B/R Sui.

Game1: He opens with mountain, bolt, and does it again turn 2. I fetch some lands, play a dryad, and grow it,
with misdirection back up. he plays a sac-sliver-for-damage, tries to terminate my tog, and I just berserk over him
at one point or another.

I sided in 2 smother, 1 misdirection for Vampiric Tutor, 1 Wish, and I guess a random opt or merchant scroll.

Game2: I go with a tog, take some burn damage, divert (uber-tech) a fatal urza's rage from my dryad to his head, and
proceed to play another dryad, and another tog. By turn 6 or so, he's at -8. I love the tog.

Round 2, Robbert ten Outenaar, Supergro.

So, difficult matchup this time, although I know he's playing supergro.

Game 1: He fetches a few times, so do I. We both draw a few cards, unfortunately, he draws into threaths, while I draw
into 1 dryad, which he keeps off the board. I think this game lasted almost 20 mins, me trying to get an advantage, but
in the end, missing the fastbond to completely go nuts. He simply plows some of my men with me exhausted my resources, and I
scoop being nearly beaten to death by some bears. His winter orb was also annoying btw, which is probably why I lost.

I sided out Mystical, Vampiric, 1 Wish, 2 counterspells, and in came 4 duress, and 2 smothers. I expected him to side out
his winter orbs though, since they aren't THAT good anyway, and he knows it. regardless, It kept my Library in check.
I sided out some other cards, but I can't pinpoint it, probably a random opt and merchant scroll again.

Game 2: I duress him, and find him not being able to counter anything I would now play. I think I go with lotus, play a tog,
pass the turn. I go into madness mode with tog in turn2 or 3, and he scroops when I play my will, with fastbond on the table,
and 3 gushes in the graveyard.

Game 3: I saw some sided in Kegs in the previous game, however, I didn't care enough to side in my Naturalises. Kegs are
not the answer to GAT at all. I first turn duress shows 3 keg, a plow, a gush and a fow. I take the fow.
I go into aggro mode with dryad, he manages to keg one though, since I didn't want to waste a counter on a critter while I had
dryad + tog in hand. He's at around 12 now, and I'm on 19. He now plays a Mystic Enforcer though. I don't have a counter ready.
I play Dryad, Tog, and tog gets plowed. I now draw into 3 duress to keep his hand in check, which i stripped of winter orbs,
and leave the plow in there. When I'm at 11, and he's at 5, he knows my dryad is lethal if I manage to pump it with a counter,
and he attacks with his enforcer. However, he plays the plow during his own turn, and I divert it to the enforcer.
after that, I draw another duress, play it, and know I'm safe. 2 turns after that, it's all over.

Robbert drops after this match, fucking up my tiebreakers. pfff.....

Round 3, Hero 't Mannetje, Rector Trix. (Pyromaniac on TMD)

We start shuffling, but during that, I mention we could just ID, and he feels the same way. Testing showed it's a coinflip on
who wins, with the luck of the draw the decider. 5-0-1 could win this tournament, since after round 4, there would only be 1
guy with a perfect record anyway... well, that was most likely anyway.
We play a random game which I should've won, going into pure aggro with 3 creatures by turn 2 or so (2 togs, 1 dryad) and start
beating with a 5/5 dryad and 2 togs. He drops a necro, gets to draw 3 cards, before I beat him to 1. He plays Illusions, I beat
him to 1 again in 1 turn, after he drew a few cards with necro. Here I fuck up at some point, so when I should've won, I even lost
regardless, it was a casual game, so who cares?
Breakfast time !

Round 4, David Martinez, Chronatog Stasis.

I know he was playing islands, from watching other games, but other than that, I have no clue.
I get to start the game.

Game 1: I go completely nuts with land, lotus, dryad, ancestral, brainstorm. hmm, no fow in his hand? I had backup anyway.
After that, I go nutser with regrowthing ancestral, recasting, fastbond, gush, gush, and that's game boys, when he's at -9 in turn 3.

I sideboard in my duresses, 1 misdirection, in favor of 1 berserk, 2 wish, mystical and vampiric. I figured he was mono-blue.

Game 2: We go into a counter war over my tog in turn 3 or so, and I see he removed his chronatog for his fow. Lol, I'm playing
against stasis! I proceed to resolve a tog with help of fow and misdirect, and draw into some gushes, fastbond, some more gushes
will, which he thwarts, leaving him with no permanents. Well, I had a fow and misdirect on hand, but I just let it be, I'll just beat
him anyway. I calculated, and noticed I even had enough damage with 1 fow backup anyway to his 0 permanents.

Now that's what I'm talking about!  ph34r m3h 1337 abusing skillzzz0rs !!!11!!

Time for Lunch!

Round 5, Koen van der Hulst, MUD. (Thug on TMD)

Gawd, you have no clue how much I would want to cry

Game 1: I scoop game 1 fairly fast, since it's all too much *sob*

I side in 4 duress, 1 Hurkys, 2 Naturalize, and 1 Boomerand for 3 misdirection, 2 wish, 1 divert and 1 berserk. could
also have taken out a random opt again, I really can't remember.

Game 2: I fow a turn 1 memory jar, duress away his only good card, and he tries to stabalize. When he does, with sphere, winter
orb, and skullcap, I draw into hurlky's. That could be fun  - I was ready to fuck him over, but he kegged away my mox Sad
I draw a lotus, tap 1 to cast it through sphere, he plays another sphere, and a smokestack. I let the discard from skullcap
go onto the stack, and hurky him. muahahah
I cast tog, timewalk, go gush, fastbond, gush, gush, will, and go mad with meh tog

Game 3: this is over in 3 turns, with him getting a perfect draw to fuck me out of the game. See above for details

Round 6, Stefan Gussenhoven, Growatog

Game 1, he starts of with dryad, I fow, he misdirects, I misdirect, he fows, I divert. ph34r m3h!
He's left with 2 cards, I'm with 3. I play dryad, ping him a few turns, and then at some point proceed to go nuts.

I side in 4 duress, 2 smother, 1 misdirection and 1 counterspell, and side out 1 berserk, 1 wish, 3 dryads, 1 mystical,
1 vampiric tutor and I think a merchant scroll or something. I completely go the tog+cardadvantage route here, which is
without a doubt what you should do in a mirror.

Game 2: I duress him, see Maze, dryad, sea, living wish, smother, tog and fow. Maze lol, I thought about putting in my mana short
as well, but had no clue what to take out anyway.
Regardless, this game comes down to actually understanding the deck. To illustrate, I had drawn my whole deck by turn 20 or so,
while he had only drawn 25 or so. Cardadvantage for life !
At some point, I resolve tog, go into double timewalk mode with the help of will, and go nuts.

So, in the end, I finish 5th, and Hero 4th with the same 4-1-1 record.

What I would change if I had to do it all again:
Take out the maindeck Berserk. It's not good enough, you only need it when you're already winning.... it's sooo win-more.
I have no clue yet as to what I want to put in yet, probably 2 daze, and put the vampiric tutor in the sideboard as well.
The 2 wishes plan is great etc. I just sided out Vampiric tutor a lot of the times, mainly for card disavantage reasons, but
I dunno. I just don't really need it for some reason. All the cardadvantage cards are blue, so you already have scrolls and
mystical. The only card you would ever want to tutor is Fastbond. And 1 demonic is good enough for that.
The creature count shouldn't be 4/4 either. 3 dryad, 4 tog is superior, because tog is pitchable, and you don't want to draw into
multiple dryads anyway. They can be sooo useless.
Other then that, I had a fun day.
