Hi It's Ray...
59 was not a bad showing for our most recent tournament.

We had some Binhampton crew representin
We also saw a kind move out of Hulk3Rules
We saw the top 8 Ben Mirror Match
But we won't see the Mike Roche Mirror Match

And @ Grand Inquisitor who predicted Ben Kowal to take home first place...I want you to pick my lottery numbers.

So everyone who came, top 8 or not, please post any thoughts that spring into your head about the day.

I will post top 8 decklists asap

Thanks
Ray

Ah yes, but I was not in attendance(Prom, which was alot of fun), but I'll try to make it to one of these shindigs sometime.  They sound like a boatload of fun.  How'd Binghamton do?

Binghamton got second place with Smokestack. That same deck knocked me out of the Top 8 with the most insane fucking draws I have ever seen (Workshop +2 mox + Mana Vault + Wire + Timetwister +sphere turn one)

i leave my house at about 8am, pick roche, james, and nick on the way. we get there about 10 minutes late, but magic tournaments are never on time. we all rush to fill out our deck registration sheets and then hang out for another 15 minutes before we start.

round 1: u/b/w tog

my opponent was a cool guy, and his deck was well constructed for the colors it was in... however, it didn't have berserk so it couldn't combo me out in time either game. tangle wire didn't help either.

2-0 2-0

round 2: mono b reanimator

game 1: i open with ancestral and discrd a jug, then follow it up with turn 2 welder and walk. on my walk turn i drop su chi, weld it for the jug, cast a second jug and drop a wire. he never stands a chance, but i assume from the bazzaar i see that he's playing reanimator.

game 2: he drops a first turn meddling mage (naming drake) , and vampirics. i drop a first turn survival. his second turn involves him dropping bazzaar and discarding akroma buried alive and an irridecent angel. i fetch an angry bouncer and play it w/ kar in hand and squee in the grave. he casts exhume on his turn and says that i have to reanimate the squee... instead i pitch karn to bounce the mage and pull it back to match his irrecesent angel. protection prom all colors makes that pretty bad in the tnt matchup and i run him over as few turns later

2-0 4-0

round 3: bryce (klown), keeper varient

i've seen bryce before, but we haven't really talked much. he's a funny guy and it was an enjoyable match. i'm still not sure exactly what keeper varient he wa playing, but i heard that he raged someone later in the tournament, and he kept saying he was playing combo.

game 1: i don't remember much, but i get fat and he just desn't deal with it.

game 2: his opening hand is 2 wastes, mystical, shatering pulse, and some other really broken stuff. fortunatly for me his mana base hates him and he can't use  the brokenessearly enough. on his final turn he tutors up lotus, wills, ancestrals twice, walks, plows a welder, and pulses a fat man. he's 1 mana short of balanceing and i win next turn by fetching another angry welder.

2-0 6-0

round 4: ben, u/r phid

we get deck checked for some reason. i hate having to wait to start my match so i tell ray that i'm going to kick him in thenuts and shove my cock down his throat. we get a good laugh over that. we get our decks back and start.

game 1: i see 1 land and 2 moxen all game. he gets loa going second and and since i cant cast anything to make him counter i never get his hand below 7.  i scoop after about 10 turns.

game 2: opposite of game 1... that is that i see a lot of land, 1 welder, and a su chi. the welder is fired, and the su chi beats my face in via control magic.

2-1 6-2

round 5: mirror

cool guy, he's playing g/r tnt with md bloodmoons but he's never played the mirror.

game 1: i drop first turn fat holding a fetchland to fetch a forest next turn so i can opperate under moon. unfortunatly for me he drops a first turn moon then turn 2 welder and survival. he makes short work of my team and burns me to death w/ su chi mana.

game 2: i drop a turn 2 trisk and eat his welder, trade with his trisk and then drop masticore. that eats another welder and i go on to win from there.

game 3: i keep a slow hand, but with welder, a su chi, and 2 survival. he drops a first turn jugg so now i'm on a clock; if he drops second turn fat i'm in trouble. he drops a turn 2 karn which threatens to eat half of my mana base to seal the win. however i survival for my amazing tech: keldon vandal (in the utkabi slot since it trades twice in the mirror). i kill the karn and the pass the turn. his jugg is forced to attack into my 4/1, a trade which i gladly accept. that was all the gas he had and i go on to win from there. keldon vandal is completely amazing.

4-1 8-2, which puts me in 4th place and lets me draw in. james and roche both have the same record as me but worse breakers so they need to play. james(tnt) looses to a u/w control deck w/ replenish, and roche (trix) looses to pox.

round 6: ben, groatog

id

top 8: ben, u/r phid (again)

game 1: i go first turn fat, second turn welder, third turn wire. he drains the wire and i weld it back in. he scoops. no mana screw.

game 2 & 3: some else decribed the match as "you and mana just not being friends" i had an active sylvan (payed 12 life to it) and ancestraled... and still couldn't find a red source, or workshop.

ben goes on to win the tournament, so congrats to him. thanks ray for running the tourney... as usual it was awsome.

props
my dad for driving

I brought One Fish, Two Fish to the party.
It did a very good imitation of a very bad draft deck.

I lost to (Binghampton) Ed Demicco's Zur's Wierding/Words of Worship creatureless combo
and it's Phid/Mage/Morphling transformational sideboard.

I lost to (Team Goat) MRoche's Rectal Trix.

I beat Joe's Dragons.dec featuring Quicksilvers and Shivans,
but only because he had Islands and I had Islandwalk.

I beat Daniel's type two Zombie deck,
but only because he Patriarch's Biddinged a pile of Zombies into play including two Graveborn Muse,
without realizing he hadn't buried a Nantuko Husk,
so his own Graveborns killed him before he could swing.

I lost to Mike's straight up Sligh, Pups and Cadets and Gorilla Shaman,
dying game two with two Suq'Ata Firewalkers and two Fire and Ice in hand,
Mishra's Factory, one blue source and no red sources on the table.
When this particular deck loses to Sligh, it's way past time to drop.

Some days it's just like that.

ben, you are such a ninja (and i am such a prophet).  btw, did anyone see Your Mother at the tournament?  i'm sorry i couldn't make it, but it sounds like a good time was had by all.  to validate my absence, i will mention that my party was a screaming success: 5 kegs, over 100 people, 3 bands, 16 cops...

hopefully i'll see y'all at hadley this saturday

ACTUALLY I gave james the goats without Jarad's permission.

Heres my short report of EBA

Round one vs James (piggy) Tangle TnT
I win 2-1 losing to moon one game.
1-0

Round two vs ? Goblin Sligh
He gets me down to 2 and I stabalize and come back with phids. I side in 2 Mis D, 2 Cop, and a Zorb, so I win stupidly.
2-0

Round 3 vs ? playing B/G void
I destroy him game one like I should. Games two and three are dumb (stuff like perfect topdecking and Waste x3 plus sinkhole) and I lose and get depressed.
2-1

Round 4 vs Ray Clavette(sp?) playing super gro
This guy happens to be the CT state champion for constructed, so I know hes a good player, but he's playing a gro variant which I have very good match-ups with. Game one he gets a land wasted and is stuck on sapphire only. The land I wasted was a tundra so I didn't assume a gro, so I cast ancestral recall into a double misdirection. He misdirected my drain (finkle what?) to his misdirection, so next turn I drop 3 phids off the mana. And I draw another wasteland stalling him at 2 mana again. I see mage and dryad but they all die to STP/vindicate so he scoops to a Negator. Game 2 he has an active Library that gets 5 draws in before a wasteland hits it. I duress away his counter and counter his other counter resolving mage on gush. He topdecks two in a row and I win the round after getting a phid in play.
3-1

Round 5 vs Keith (ctthespian) TnT
I wasn't expecting him to be running as many wastes as he does so I keep a 1 land with stp x2 and mystical. It gets wasted and I dont get my other lands till its too late. Games 2 and three I had reasonable numbers of lands and won via Mage on Survival and Moon and and removal of threats untill a Will showed up.
4-1

Round 6 vs Jarad (wicketsnatcher) Rector Trix (not LD)
ID into 8th seed.
4-1-1

Top 8 vs Josh ? Stax/Ducktape/Smokestack
Game one my hand isn't great and his works smoothly the way its sposed to and he wins.

[start rant]
Game two is dumb. I open with lotus negator land with mystical (for recall probably) time walk and another land plus two brainstorms. Basically I'm going to hit him for 10 and draw 3 cards. He plays Workshop Mox Mox Mana Vault Tangle Wire Timetwister (FUCK!) and draws into Sphere to add insult to assraping. Next turn an academy hits and smokestack and sphere 2 come into play. Uh, I lose. This sucked, esspecially because we tested the matchup A LOT the night before and it was shown to be a pretty favorable matchup from the results we saw.
[end rant]

It was cool to see Bens deck give him every card he could possibly need in the last 2 rounds. By the amount he was excited about it I'm sure he wrote a report and its in the Unreg forum (by SumerSaugen).

Don't try this at home, kids.

Here's what actually happens.
Finkle on stack.
Mana Drain on stack.
Misdirection on stack.
Misdirection resolves and leaves stack.
Mana Drain resolves, can't find its target, and fizzles.
Finkle resolves.
No mana for 3 phids.

Uh, not that Im just trying to save face here (which I kinda am), but given who I was playing I dont think I could have gotten away with that. Looking back I probably got the 5 mana off a Gush.

I'm posting this as a favor to Ed Demicco, who made Top 8 at this tourney.

One day I was sitting around with a friend of mine thinking of how I could use Words of Worship in Type 1 because I had used the card in a Mono White Type 2 deck, and people laughed at me when I said it was good.  Then it hit me.  Zur's Weirding, an overlooked, situational at best, card from Ice Age that pretty much sucks.  But when you use Words of Worship/Zur's Weirding, and as long as you aren't losing 3 life a turn from something, it becomes a lock which will make them deck themselves.  My initials builds of The Weirding were horrid.  I ended up asking Bryce(kl0wn) for some
help withbuilding the deck.  He was the one who added the Intuition/Replenish combo.  So you can Intuition for
Weirding, Words, and the third being Future Sight or Humility, then Replenish them out to win.  Since the deck loses so often in games two and three, I came up with a tranformational sideboard one of my favorite Type 2 cards, Exalted Angel.

The Weirding(Version like, 136.85 - CrazyCarl)

4x Force of will
3x Counterspell
1x Mana drain
1x Misdirection
4x Acculumlated Knowledge
3x Intuition
1x Mystical Tutor
1x Fact or Fiction
1x Ancestral Recall
1x Future Sight
1x Zur's Weirding

1x Balance
3x Swords To Plowshares
3x Replenish
1x Seal of Cleansing
1x Humility
1x Moat
1x Words of Worship

2x Duress
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Yawgmoth's Will

4x Flooded Strand
4x Tundra
3x Underground Sea
2x Island
2x City of Brass
1x Strip Mine
1x Wasteland
1x Plains
1x Lotus
1x Libary
1x Mox Jet
1x Mox Sapphire
1x Mox Pearl
1x Sol Ring

Sideboard

2x Exalted Angel
2x Morphling
3x Ophidian
4x Meddling Mage
1x Circle of Protection: Red
1x Seal of Cleansing
1x Celestial Dawn (8blastplan Tek)
1x Sacred Ground (smokestack Tek)

Round 1:  Pernicious Dude playing Gay Fish /w Red

Game 1: I watched his fish beat me down while I set myself up for the win.  When I was sure I could force it through, at the end of his turn I Intuitioned for Words/Humility/Weirding.  He was a bit surprised at first, then when it came to my turn I Replenished and explained the lock.

Game 2: Since I saw Volcanic Islands in game one, I feared Red Blasts, so I went into my sideboard took out everything combo-esque and brought in the creatures.  I played an early Mage naming REB, and his deck never really got going.  My creatures were too big for his Fire Walkers.
2-0 (1-0)

Round 2:  Someone playing The Rock

Game 1: He started off strong with a Duress taking my Force, then Therapy naming Accumulated Knowlege.  Then he dropped a Deed and it was looking grim for me. I played out my enchantments, Humility and Words, and Duressed me, taking my Misdirection, and then Echo'd away the majority of my blue cards.  If he had known to Deed first, then Echo'd I would have scooped.  As it were, I played Weirding and
after he Deeded I Replenished and won.

Game 2:  This was kinda unfair for him, as he didn't end up with much land and I played an early Weirding with a tutor in my hand and stopped him from getting land until I tutored for
Words and went into instant deck mood.
2-0 (2-0)

Round 3 TnT, the first of three all day

Game 1:  I countered an early welder, then he dropped
Survival then got Anger and that evil Squee.  I then watched as a Juggie smashed me down to 10.  I thought I was lucky when I ripped a moat, but then next turn he got a Lyrist and I scoop.

Game 2: I bring in Mages & Co.  I open up with Lotus and 2 Seals turn one then ride an Angel to the win.

Game 3:  This game was bad, he drew a good hand with Workshop and Survival and he just smashes early on, then when I tap out too early to play Morphling, he Trisks it.  I try to come back, but there was too much beef.
1-2 (2-1 )

Round 4 Keeper
My next match was against this cool guy who was playing keeper, having much experience playing keeper,
(Carl, bryce) I know that I stand a good chance in game 1 along as Future Sight doesn't hit.

Game 1:  Things were looking bad for me, as I had missed some land drops early.  Then he resolved Future Sight, with no cards in hand and all I had was Replenish.  His future Sight hit a land, then another when he played it.  I got lucky as I rip Seal and stop his Future Sight before it gets out of hand.  He draws nothing but lands for the rest of the game and I sent up the combo and win.

Game 2:  Having played against Keeper so many times, knowing that allay/2x disenchants and the 4 Reb's basically own me, I have to switch to my Phid's and friends.  I get an early Meddling Mage naming Red Elemental Blast, then turn
3 morphed creature, turn 4 unmorph Angel and he draws nothing.  He was a nice guy and just had bad draws.
2-0 (3-1)

Round 5 TnT
It turned out that I had mistakenly recorded my results from the last round so I got paired as if I was 2-2.  I talked to the tournament organizer and he said it should be ok.  So it turned out too be my second match versus TnT on the day.

Game 1:  This game started off bad for me. An early Seal on Survival and then Intuition for 3 Plow's, then Yawg Willing and Plowing 4 dudes total and the Seal.  I then Intuition for my combo and a quick Replenish later, I win.

Game 2:  I went creature sideboard on him because I hate running into 4x Naturalize/REB that Tnt has access to.  It turned out too be a good idea because turn one he dropped a Crypt , and got an early Jester's Cap on me, which would have won him the game if I hadn't switched.  He ended up removing a Phid and 2 Morphlings or something like that.  Luckily I had 2 Angels in my hand, and rode them both to victory, despite making the great play of casting Yawgmoth's Will into Crypt.  He had the best looking deck I had ever seen, including 4 Foil Welders(I'm hurt - CrazyCarl who was nice enough to do a HUGE editing job on this Razz).
2-0 (4-1)

Round 6 Team Goat's Mike Roche playing TnT
Before this round he posted Standings, I was 8th place which meant I had to win (Or at least that's what I thought).

Game 1:  We wait about 10 minutes for a deck check to finish, but had no problems then started.  I ended up Intuitioning for Moat, Humility and Future Sight with
Replenish in hand. I ended up winning the game.

Game 2:  My creatures proved to be huge, with land/Mox/Mage naming Survival.  I almost named ReB and I probably would have lost if I had.  My hand was solid with lots of counters and a Phid draws me into the goods to win with.
2-0 (5-1)

Top 8
It had turned out that everybody above me drew, and after 6 swiss rounds I was second after Josh Ochse, another Binghamtonite.

Quarterfinals: Ben playing Grow
Game 1:
He wins the counter war, drops a Dryad a few Gushes later I scoop.

Game 2:
I drop early Angel and ride it to victory.

Game 3:  I got a secondd turn Meddling Mage out, knowing how I should have named Gush, I figured my hand was solid enough that I could win the counter war, I might as well name Dryad.  He hadn't done much early but then I get to AK, then AK into a Mage, then draw a Mage, so I had two in my hand.  The first Mage gets countered, secondd Mage gets through though and I name Cunning Wish(Why, I don't know.  During my scouting I had watched this kid play and I hadn't seen the Tog yet, and for some reason, my mind wasn't working, and I named Cunning Wish because I thought he would wish for Smother and kill my Mage if I named Tog... I probably would have won because he had 3 in his hand).  As it was, I named Cunning Wish. I rock.  That's what I get for not sleeping the night before and driving 4 hours at 5 in the morning.  Next turn he drops a Tog and goes nuts with Will.  I said show me a 'Zerk and I'll scoop.  It was kind of a depressing loss considering I had him down to 6 or so with Mages, but since I named Cunning Wish and not Tog I lost.  A shitty way too end a tournament but it happens.  I got a Morphling out of  the deal though.

I hope this puts the Weirding on the map!

I love that if you chose, you could convert into a deck that is very close to EBA. You're right when you said you should have named Gush. People think restricting gush would kill tog, why not just ban it with mage?

I like the deck, but I was wondering if I could get a list of how you feel its better than Illusions-Donate. I mean, I can see some of the points for both sides, but I'm not totally convinced that this is better.

Does sacred ground work vs smokestack? Because if it does, im adding it. Its so perfect, you can tap it then sac it to untap it. It also has alternate uses vs suicide decks running sinks and wastes. If that works, I give whoever came up with it a lot of credit.

Nick:  I can't answer much for him(he's unregged), but I'm fairly certain that Smokestack + Sacred Ground is a combo(If it's their Smokestack anyways Razz)

If you're interested in discussing the deck, I could convince him to post it in the Unreggie forum.

Karmic Justice most certainly does NOT trigger. The oracle states "destroys" where smokestack is sacrificing. Sacred ground just says when they cause you to lose a land, so that works.
