I'm gonna try to uh, lighten this up a bit. I made top eight playing Mask, which resembled Phelon's version a lot because more than half of it was his. The exact list eludes me, but it included 4 Illusionary Mask 4 Phyrexian Dreadnought Some Hypnotic Specters Some Duresses Some (I think and hope four) Unmasks 3 or 4 Dark Rituals 1 Recoil 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Demonic Consultation 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Mind Twist 1 Timetwister 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Black Lotus 1 Time Walk 1 Necropotence 4 Tainted Pact 1 Sol Ring I ran light on trading for fetchlands before the tournament, so my land base looks kind of weird. 2 Flooded Strand 1 Bloodstained Mire 4 Underground Sea 3 Mishra's Factory 3 Snow-Covered Swamp 3 Swamp 3 Underground River 1 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine
And yes, you'll notice Ancestral Recall isn't there. It was my fifth proxy, and I kind of uh, misplaced it. I later found it clinging to the inside of my deck box. whoops.
Round One - Jarad (Wicketsnatcher) playing U/G Bears Game one is all about my dreadnought getting blocked by six bear tokens. He caught me completely by surprise and after a quick laugh I sided in Dystopia. Games two and three see Dreadnoughts early and fast, both times with Dystopia support. 2-1-0, 1-0-0
Round Two - Anthony (???) I've seen his Land's Edge deck in action before and I wasn't sure if I could go fast enough to kill before he could stabilize. Game one saw a first turn dreadnought go all the way. Game two he's laying moxes, drawing new hands, and land taxing all over the place, finishing the job with Seismic Assault while I hold back Underground Sea and hope to discard it for the kill if he's forgotten Land's Edge is any player. He hadn't. Game three was a toss up, he needed land to kill and I needed a dreadnought to Time Walk with and run in for the kill. Time was called (what the hell, I'm playing Mask!) and we drew, both of us actually somewhat relieved. 1-1-1, 1-0-1
Round Three - Cool guy I forgot the name of playing White Weenie We sit down and he drops a Swords to Plowshares while shuffling. I have a bad feeling about it, but I deal myself a hand and roll for the first turn. I win the roll and pick up my hand. Holy shit. I drop a swamp, double ritual, duress, mask, and two face down Dreadnoughts. I take his land tax (everything else was land or creatures) and he draws. He Swordses my one of my big men with his topdeck, but the other one doesn't care and just smashes face. I side in Dystopia, Gloom, and even Lord of Tresserhorn (who I sided in almost every opportunity I got, just because he's the coolest motherfucker around) . His sideboarding takes a long time, which is no surprise as his library now contains 2 Null Rods, 4 Swords to Plowshares, 4 Seal of Cleansings, and 4 Disenchants. I look at my hand and see a little first turn dreadnought love, which I lay on the table and await his next action. He plops down a Soltari guy, and I draw into Mox Jet. I lay the Jet and a swamp, and Tainted Pact.... Into another Dreadnought. His Swords can't stop it and the killers rush over his lions the following turn. 2-0-0, 2-0-1
Round Four - Nick (BillTheDuck) Nick is the man with a plan. He Swordses my dreadnoughts, he counters my masks, he edicts my hyppies, and he duresses my unmasks. He easily runs over me both games with negators and white weenies. Coincidentally, the second game here sees the worst play I've ever made in my life, and will become my own Demonic Consultation Legacy. For reasons I still can't quite explain, in response to his Duress I Demonic Consultationed for Ancestral Recall. Whoops. I kind of forgot it wasn't in my deck, and managed to deck myself. At least his Negators couldn't kill me this time, I was taking myself out! Hah! 0-2-0, 2-1-1
Round Five - Dude with a red shirt playing Suicide Black Game one goes Swamp, Ritual, Mask, Dread, smash. Game two I keep this hand - Mask, Ritual, Ritual, Ritual, Pact, Underground Sea, Yawgmoth's Will, and I pray for anything that isn't first turn duress. My prayers are answered when he says go, and I proceed to put two big men on the table on turn one. He Demonic Consultations for Edict in desperation, and as he passes one in the first six cards he realizes he only sided two in. He finds it and I turn a Mishra's Factory into a creature to sacrifice it. I then smash his face for 22 (he chumped with a hyppie) and report. Round time: Two minutes, eighteen seconds. time to eat. 2-0-0, 3-1-1
Top Eight - Dan Richardson (Pernicious Dude) If Nick had answers for everything, Dan has answers for everything and more. Game one is actually close despite maindecked Null Rods and Maze of Ith, and I get him to three when I duress - Revealing three Psionic Blasts. By my math I would have been at four if he swung with everything, and he did... And then Blasts for the kill. Game two he plays two null rods and it's all over. In both these games, and I think he'll agree, Pact screwed me. The first pact showed BOTH my flooded strands in a row, with NOTHING before them. My second got me Dark Ritual, Snow Covered Swamp, Dark Ritual. Oh well, no sense complaining, I'll win it next time. Ph34r. 0-2-0
Props Chris, for making it to the finals Steve, for finally winning after the T4 Ray, for eating 'all that and a bag of chips' T&T for hosting a good one Phelon for loaning me the masks and dreads and almost everything in between (including Timetwister) Keith for giving me rides and Keith's friend Dan for loaning me Underground Seas and a Vampiric Tutor
Slops Loren, for not bringing the sligh I intended to play (no joke) Greg A, for not coming Chris B, for beating me over a year ago with a sneak attack deck despite Lobotomizing Sneak Attack on turn two (heh)
