OK. I was glad to get some feedback on my previous poll-like post concerning the best t1 deck in today's varied metagame, so I thought I'd type up the second (and probably last) of my opinion posts. This time, I'd like to hear about player's personal favorites as far as combos and combo decks go. The field is very big, so don't be afraid to "shoot for the fences", so to speak. I'm looking for any combo (even your own crazy ones, if you perfer), from any generation of magic (black summer and combo winter obviously included), and any explanations or stories to go along with your choice. Deck lists wouldn't be a bad idea either, as they further help to prove your arguments. Insights from both Veterans and Newbs are welcome. Personally, I can't think of my own favorite combo at the moment, as there are just too many ridiculous and insane examples that I've 'bumped into' over the years. I'll have to think on mine and post it later or something. Again, decklists are welcome, and ludicrous stories are encouraged! Perhaps we'll uncover a new combo of our own while we're at it! Thanks for your time, and, as always, peace out. -Arcanis

My "favorite" combo deck: 38 Black Lotus 20 Timetwister 2 Fireball
That was serious Alpha tech.
Can we count stuff like the old balance/rack decks? Balance was a savage "combo" with, uh, itself.

Lich and Mirror Universe, though I agree: Balance is the best combo card in and of itself.

As far as competitive sanctioned tournament history goes, my vote has to go to the Tolarian Academy decks with 4 copies of Academy. These decks consistently won by the 3rd turn. Another combo deck which could have been great was Memory Jar, but that one was restricted before Urza's Legacy even became legal thanks to the emergency banning/restricting of Memory Jar.
Of course, if we count decks from the days when there were no deck limitations, I would have to go for one of the degenerate decks using 20+ copies of some of the following: Mox Jet/Pearl/Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald, Black Lotus, Lightning Bolt, Channel, Fireball, Wheel of Fortune, Timetwister, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk.

Well aside from the brutallity that was balance, I would have to go with either Academy or Trix/Illusions Donate. Two brutal decks were all the combo component are blue, giving them counter protection and draw. Hell even the old type 2 stroke of genius decks were broken back when grim monolith, voltaic key, academy, frantic search, timespiral, and stroke could all be 4 ofs. That whole block is broken.

Slovakian: During combo winter, academy decks won consistenly (read : always) on turn 1. "I win the flip?" "Ok, I'll report a 2-1 win" "Sure" *sob*

Fluctuator!
Using a bunch of cycling creatures from the Urza block, Songs of the Damned, and an X damage spell (usually Drain Life or Torch) you can make a modest combo deck.

MoreFling, that's the 3rd time I've seen you use that example; while true, it's getting pretty old .
Being serious, old school Trix when Necropotence wasn't restricted was most definately the best combo deck of all time. Followed by the unrestricted Academy.

Quote Being serious, old school Trix when Necropotence wasn't restricted was most definately the best combo deck of all time. Yeah, when a combo deck starts playing MD REBs, you know something is wrong. But I think if Jar had gotten a chance to shine, people would give it a lot more respect. Don't forget that you could also run 4x Tinker and all those other goodies at the time.

academy was great. so yea that'd be the best in my books. fun fun combos:
1) grim monolite + power art: everyone knows about this. IF you can fetch the 2 pieces its game over, i.e. infinite colorless mana. (i play a version with almost all artifacts, 1 academy, and future sight for running extremely fast through my deck. u can also run mana severence (gets all dead lands out so you can finish the game that turn).
2) channel + lavaburst was an old IA combo. pretty funny if it worked, 1st turn kill =) i dont think either are restricted either now??
3) sliver queen + ashnods alter + heartstone (i think?): allowed you to make infinite mana/sliver tokens. quite hard to pull off, although you can run 4 of all of these spells. thats all i can think of right now...

Here is one that was very amuzing, when my random elf deck did it, and that was not the point of the deck... Wirewood lodge Argothian elder Gaea's Cradle (and another creatures)/a forest with wild growth you tap the land that makes at least two mana, one of which must be green, then use the lodge to untap the elder and in response untap the mana making land and the lodge keep doing it, and then say fuck because the deck has nothing to cast... realize you got bored and put the new kamal, with overrun power in deck make you elves into huge monstrocities and smash all 7 other people in 1 turn

Does anyone have a decklist of the old Balance/The Rack deck, before the restriction?

I googled "Maysonet Rack Balance" and found an old article of his: http://home.t-online.de/home/028334492-0001/mrb.htmIt has 2 decklist (both T1 legal at the time) and some explanation of card choices.
