Author Topic: an Improvement on goblin sligh?  (Read 839 times)

I am not a regular T1 player, though I do read TheManaDrain religously. I have been building a goblin sligh deck, but I wasn't satisfied with the deck's performance without goblin piledriver. That is when I discovered goblin recruiter.

goblin recruiter=1R
when goblin recruiter comes into play, you may search your library for any number of goblins, then put them onto the top of your library in any order.

I put four of these into the deck in replacement of mogg flunkies, the 3/3 for 1R, and was VERY pleased with the results. I can use the recruiter as a tutor for the piledriver (or four of them!). Also, because the recruiter is a goblin, it has further synergy with the pledriver. Its casting cost is identcle to the flunkie, so the deck is in no way slowed. Furthermore, using recruiter to gain multiple piledrivers can force a control deck to waste counters, until one finally gets through. Lastly, the recruiter controls the flow of goblins, eliminating unneeded draws of non-threats such as mountains, and against another weenie-based aggro deck, the constant flow of creatures will overhelm the opponent( as you are resupplied goblins to replace their fallen comrades).

I havee been very happy with my recruiters, but I just am curious to see what you guys think of it. Is it as useful as I believe it  to be? If not, why?

Goblin Recruiter, although not commonly included in builds of sligh, is by no means a poor card. Indeed, Mons Johnson -- after whom the Goblin Raiders are named -- has used Goblin Recruiter to secure for himself a place on the pro tour.

Here is the article:
Mons's Goblin Circus

In summary, this is the list.
Circus
4 Goblin Lackey
4 Mogg Fanatic
2 Grim Lavamancer
1 Mogg Raider
4 Goblin Piledriver
2 Mogg Flunkies
4 Goblin Recruiter
1 Sparksmith
1 Goblin Sharpshooter
3 Goblin Ringleader
4 Seal of Fire
2 Goblin Bombardment
4 Terminate
6 Mountain
2 Swamp
4 Sulfurous Spring
4 Bloodstained Mire
1 Shadowblood Ridge
4 Wasteland
3 Rishadan Port

Sideboard:
1 Goblin Sharpshooter
1 Goblin Matron
2 Lava Dart
2 Duress
2 Cabal Therapy
1 Planar Void
1 Coffin Purge
2 Perish
1 Spellshock
2 Dralnu's Crusade

This deck uses the recruiter to set up the top of its library, and then uses the ring leader to get the goblins whom the recruiter recruited.

Well, I've tried Recruiter/Ringleader goblin sligh builds, and they change how the deck plays.  You will not end up with Red Stompy, if that's what you're going for.  You do not have the same redundancy level, and sacrifice some of the raw power in the early game in exchange for a better mid to late-game.

Whether that is a desirable thing is the question.

This definitely makes the deck less of a beatdown deck.  Having both Flunkies and Piledrivers gives you redundancy.  Recruiter gives you extra Piledrivers, but this uses up your draw and is slower.

For example:
Turn 2 I cast Flunkies.  With the aid of another goblin cast turn one (and you are going to have another goblin out with 24 of them in the deck), I hit with Flunkies turn 3 and turn 4.

Turn 2 I cast Recruiter, and go put 2 or 3 (whatever number) Piledrivers on top of my deck.  Turn 3 I draw and cast Piledriver.  Turn 4 I get to attack with the Piledriver, and will likely have two goblins to pump him up with (a one drop turn 1 plus Recruiter).

I find scenario one to be better.

Actually, I believe that the Goblin Recruiter leading to Goblin Piledriver to be preferable. Hopefully, the Piledriver will attack with 3 other goblins, the one cast first turn, the recruiter, and a 1cc goblin cast along with the Piledriver on the third turn. This takes the damage total to about 10 (assuming 1 power goblins, except for the Piledriver). The previous round had been for 1, taking total damage to 11. In the Mogg Flunkie scenario, this damage would have been a total of 11 as well. (the original goblin 3 times, the flunkies twice for 6, and the 2 goblins cast 3 turn for 2 points of damage on the fourth turn.)(assuming, as in the first example, that the only diffence in goblins was the funkie vs. the recruiter). This pattern of the recruiter version catching the Flunkie version in damage assigned holds true for most potential draws. Furthermore, beyond those first few turns, the Goblin Piledriver's damage potential far exceeds Mogg Flunkie. That is why I have not really experianced any loss of speed in my builds. What I do gain is more consistancy and flexibility.

Thanks for the link. However, I don't think that the The Goblin Ringleader is the right card for goblin sligh. Here's why
1. he costs 4 mana, this won't be easy to cast, because I want to aviod being mana heavy. Furthermore, the Goblin Recruiter will stack the top of the deck with goblins, not mountains. You will not be able to cast the recruiter until you have at least 4 mountains in your hand+board. Even then, casting recruiter 2 turn would bring out a ringleader fourth turn, and bringing out the goblins to deal damage by the 5 turn. In most cases, a recruiter finding some Pildedrivers can bring the fifth turn kill, without the diffulties of having 4 available mana.
