Ok, here is a crazy idea that i read, then thought about. We on the manadrain try to stay up with the latest tech (right?) so right now everyone is getting ready for the flood of aggro decks(or playing one). Which means control is using more removal again.

So what I am trying to say is that we should play decks from 2 metagame shifts ago, thus effectively making good players overshoot the metagame and fall into our clutches.

Personally, some brown deck other than TNT seems like a good idea to me, as everyone is getting ready for the onslaught of creatures, tangle wire, sphere, etc could come back. Also, I think long is out there, aggro may find themselves dead on the third turn.

Anyone have any ideas on going back in the meta 2 shifts ago for playing in todays, or is that just a stupid idea?

The idea makes sense... but might not be as strong as one might hope.  If you go back 2 metagames, you are reversing the evolution of intelligent deck construction...  Assuming for a moment that as a deck developer, you are learning from your previous builds and creating better decks, you should be able to take decks from the first future metagame shift and pilot them to easy victories.  (which have yet to be developed)

This is where you as a developer come in.

Take a deck you want to build on from 2 metagame shifts ago (or whenever) and pre-emptively start building your aggro metagamed deck so you are ahead of the curve.  I actually don't think this aggro metagame will last very long, but while it does, any smart player should have a definite advantage.  Tangle wires, trinispheres, spheres, smokestacks, abyss, moat, humility, deed, etc all seem extremely playable right now.

Good call. Use old tech, but with more efficient builds! And I think Abyss is so playable now (TNT will kick my ass for that), "Die weenies, die wurms, and hounds! MU ha ha ha." (OK too much caffeine.) I will ponder that idea for now.

I don't think going back is the answer, just out think your opponents. If you expect a lot of aggro, then go with combo. If you think there will be a lot of combo combating the aggro, then play a well tuned control deck (I think Hulk and Keeper are the best right now for that reason). Of course you could go on and on in this circle, just stay one step ahead of everyone else is all  Wink

Humility>Abyss.

There is no need to go back in time to deal with the flood of Aggro. Too much has chagned to do so, and we already have all of the answers we need to confront Jan 1st's Meta. Its really a question of teaching old dogs new tricks so they can fend for themselves, ala Keeper.

I really don't think Long or Academy is coming back anytime soon against quality Aggro decks like Stacker and TnT. Trinisphere and Chalice of the Void just destroy those decks.

Unfortunately for two of my favorite cards ever,
Naturalize > Humility > The Abyss.

The Abyss owned when green had limited and conditional ways to remove it.
Humility owned more when the best of those ways was a creature.
Neither of those are true any more.
