I just starting selling some cards on ebay and in one of my auctions a guy from Germany won.  I wrote in my ad that I only wanted to ship domestically but I think I may make an exception in this case.  I was curious to know what a fair price is to ship 4 magic cards from SF to Germany.  Also, since I specifically said that I do not want to ship internationally, can I adjust my shipping fee after the auction?

Yes, I believe you can change the shipping fee, cause you stated it was domestic only. The guy will understand if you tell him.

How much do you ask for domestic shipping? $1.00/$1.50 extra will do I think. I live in Belgium and bought lots of cards through ebay. They usually charge $1.50 to $3.50 for shipping the item (which is fair). It all depends how you ship the item I guess. You can charge extra if you're using toploaders.

In the living room, Navidson discovers the echoes emanating from a dark, doorless hallway which has appeared out of nowhere in the west wall.

just tell the guy to either pay the price, or stop winning the auction. If you made it clear you would only ship to the US, then that's that. That is so easy to discover that it suggests conspicuousness or little need for perspicacity in the observer. your pre-determined shipping rate is made for that purpose. If he can't accept that, well, then I'd just give him negative feedback and email ebay about a bidder not keeping up with the auction rules.

Unfortuantly he was the winner of the auction.  I would like to try and work it out with this guy but I definitly want to charge more than the dollar shipping cost on my auction.

On the same subject, what is the "best" way to ship cards oversees? I shipped a couple in padded envelopes but the post office made me put a customs sticker on it with a value. I later found out that because I listed the value over $50, the person receiving the package had to pay around $17 to get their package Sad.

I was told to get around this, I just write Gift on it, but I would like to know the safest way to ship cards out of the US.

Envelope?
Top Loaders?
Padded Envelope?

All the online stores ship internationally using:
Padded envelope or a strong cardboard box (for large orders), sometimes both.

PLUS

Those really really unbendable card sleeves, or toploaders. Mostly toploaders but one place used the thick sleeves. They're like 1mm thick on either side.

I've never had any cards lost or damaged during shipping. One time I wrote the wrong delivery address though, an address that didn't exist. I emailed the shop (cardkingdom.com) about it and they said they would ship it back to me (at the correct address) free of charge if it got returned to them, which it did after about 2 months. Pretty cool of them since it was my fault it bounced.

Your 'best' bet shipping overseas from the U.S. goes something like this:
Under US$40 - ship in toploaders inside a padded envelope. Depending on what country and how many cards, this should cost you between $.80 to $2.40. ALWAYS write out one of the small green customs forms, write 'playing cards' under the item description, check 'Gift,' and declare a value of less than $20 (if possible).

Over US$40 - the safest way to go (and I encourage you to pass this cost onto the customer or person you are trading with) is USPS Registered mail. You will have to fill out another form for this, and it costs an additional US$7.50 on top of the shipping costs mentioned above, but it is usually the only truly trackable (by the sender) way of mailing out of the country. Declare the real value on the customs form, but stick with marking 'gift' (to avoid your customer having to pay more at pick-up), and also stick with the padded envelope if you have them available to you.

Registered mail from other countries (parts of Asia and Europe, for example) is often a lot cheaper (as low as $1-3 more per package, in some instances), so if your customer(s) whine about excessive shipping costs, you can tell them that's the law of the land, or you can point them directly to this link:

Thanks JACO.  That helped out alot.  The auction ended around 47 dollars (4 avatars of Woe).  I think I will go the under $40 route to keep things within reason.  Paying 7.50 in shipping for Avatars of Woe seems criminal.  However, it is like you said...it's the law of the land.

jhaggs: If your auction stated explicitely that you would only ship to the US, this german guy has no business bidding and winning the auction. So I'd say you are in your right to tell him you will need to charge him a little more for shipping.

I wrote him an e-mail explaining where I was coming from and he agreed that indeed it was his mistake.  Considering that the auction was already over I still wanted to work things out with him if possible (espically since he was "desperate" for the avatars).  All in all, it was a good learning process as this was my first correspondance overseas.  We settled a 3 dollar shipping fee which I felt was reasonable.

Thanks all for the help.

$3 seems fair. It costs me $1.25 CAD International, plus +$1 for the bubble envelope if the trade is somewhat special.
