Hi,

Here's my question:  Does a spell have to resolve for Quirion Dryad to get a counter?  Does it still get a counter even if the spell gets countered?

Thanks.

No, the Dryad triggers as soon as you play the spell (i.e. put it on the stack, before it can get countered). Same deal as with Argothian Enchantress.

An opposing sligh player can still respond to the trigger of putting on a counter though, right?

Correct. The counter ability triggers when you put the spell on the stack, but it won't resolve until both players pass priority.

My bad, JO beat me to it

A sligh Player can respond to the triggered ability before it resolves, but if he is casting a spell (I assume red) it will cause another activiation that will have to resolve before the spell does. I.E. (responding to his activation) you can not kill a 2/2 dryad with a shock, but you could with Grim Lavamancer.

You're thinking of Forgotten Ancient. Dryad only triggers off your own spells.

yup
one of the irritating things about the FA is you can't kill it with a bolt
a fireblast might do it, but a brainstorm will ruin your day
