When you first started playing magic, it was 20/20/20.
20 lands, 20 creatures, 20 spells or non-creature artifacts.
As you got better, it became 26/12/22.
And eventually, right before you realized that "archtype" doesn't refer to your friend's Dragon Arch deck, it was 24/12/24.

Lately, 12 creature build decks just have been to newbiesh or random.  Everything has to be either combo or include stock artifacts (spheres, smokestack, tangle wire) to be considered.  Any deck sporting red but not 4 goblin welders must have a crazy deck builder to think his deck will work, right?

But there's one thing 12 creature decks (or actually 10-12) hold over combo decks anyday, stability.

So first, in order to read on, you'll have to break the stigma that your 10-12 mandatory creatures have to be:
4 Gorilla Shaman
4 Goblin Welder
1 Karn, Silver Golem
1 Triskellion
There -ARE- more creatures out there.  So next, take a look at what creatures have to offer.
(this list is incomplete and thrown together)
Red:
Gorilla Shaman
Jackal Pup
Goblin Cadets
Grim Lavamancer
Goblin Welder
Kird Ape
Atog

Green:
River Boa
Hidden Herd
Hidden Gibbons
Elves (Llanowar, Fyndhorn, Priest of Titania)

Black:
Capnomancy
Flesh Reaver
Phyrexian Negator
Withered Wretch
Phyrexian Rager
Hypnotic Specter

Blue:
Morphling
Serendib Efreet
Ophidian
Man-O'-War

White:
Savannah Lions
White Knight

Artifact or Gold:
Pyschatog
Meddling Mage
Masticore
Su-Chi
Cathodian
Triskellion
Karn, Silver Golem
Phyrexian War Beast

So, your first step is picking your 10-12 creatures.  Of course, this all depends on your primary colors, in my case blue and red with green and black splashed.

Creature base:
4 Gorilla Shaman
4 Hidden Gibbons
3 Phyrexian Rager

Your disruption theme will either be: stock (which we are avoiding because this is overused), burn, disruption, or control.

4 Force of Will
3 Mana Drain
2 Duress
2 Fire / Ice
1 Rack and Ruin

And finally, the one card that gives this deck a fighting chance will be Cunning wish, alongside it half of the restricted list.

So, in the end, the deck looks like this

"12CreatureRule.dec"

Creatures (11)
4 Gorilla Shaman
4 Hidden Gibbons
3 Serendib Efreet

Utility (11)
3 Cunning Wish
2 Brainstorm
1 Mind Twist
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor

Disruption (13)
4 Force of Will
3 Mana Drain
3 Duress
3 Fire / Ice

Mana (25)
4 Polluted Delta
3 Tropical Island
4 Underground Sea
3 Volcanic Island
3 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
7 Sol/Lotus/Mox

Sideboard (15)
3 Pyroblast
2 BEB
2 REB
2 Headstone
2 Rack and Ruin
1 Hydroblast
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Naturalize
1 Stifle

Interesting introduction to a deck build, but have you playtested this deck at all?  Got any results v. anything?  Just curious to see if there is anything here.

It's so extremely frustrating spending days and weeks preparing, and all the time just know that some jolly Japanese will bash your head in with cards you've barely heard of.
