These are obviously strong. Not sure yet if they're too strong. I think this is about the only way to safely give a 1cc creature a "power" of 2. That's the basic goal of the first one, aside from the interesting interactions available in multiplayer.
The second is designed to give red aggro a little bit of permanent board control, something to supplement or even displace Scrolls. I think these are strong in all formats, but not unbalancing. Just as long as they aren't Goblins, they should be fine.

Spark Mage suggests that the first one is ok.
The bear may not be, since red bears always seem to suck. Although for RR I guess it's ok.

I'm curious as to how the second one is suppoed to replace Cursed Scroll. If I have something Scrollable, wouldn't I just block your dog with that creature?

It's more for those situations where the opponent has a creature they're unwilling to block with. Something that you could kill if they'd just block with the damn thing, but is otherwise giving you headaches.
Best "for instance" I can think of is when they have a horde of 1/1 and 2/1's (like against WW or Keeper after a Decree) and they know they can outrace you on damage. Or some 1/1 with an annoying ability that they'd rather keep you locked down with (Welder).
Everyone:
Would the second be too strong if I pumped the second ability up to 2, or would it be just a really powerful rare?

I like both cards as they are. After all, red is not supposed to have very good creatures. Think about it - if the second one deals 2 damage, you are virtually having a 4/2 on second turn.

Perhaps introduce the trusty old DnD salamanders to magic? There already was a scalding salamander in exodus and a flowstone salamander in tempest, so perhaps these could be searing salamanders (sounds cartoonish) or flamebrothers or firetails.

I don't want something simple and stupid like "Lava Elemental" or the like. You get the idea. Feel free to adjust the creature type, but don't give me something moronic and easy. Matt: didn't you do a whole little study on Volcanoes and volcanic adjectives? Would any of those fit to these cards? |

VOLCANO RABBITOn a more serious note, I liked Stijn's suggestion of making one a salamander. How about "Firetail" for the small one with creature type "Salamander" and "Alkali Scorpion" for the other (type "Scorpion")?

As a chemist I have to object to the Alkali Scorpion.
WTF = Alkali Scorpoin supposed to do? React heavily with water under room temperature and 1 atmosphere condition? Make a strong base with Tert-butyl-goblin? It makes no sense.

Well I assumed it would be a scorpion that lived on (in?) an alkali flats or alkali lake, which you certainly get in the desert. Flamingos go there.
