I played Goblin Sligh for my last 7 tourneys in Carta and doing very well with it (loosing 3 times in semi-final and one time in the final). This month, I wanted to try another deck.

1 Mana Crypt
1 Lotus petal
4 Wooded Foothill
4 Taiga
5 Mountains
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine

SB: 4 Blood Moon
SB: 3 Artefact Mutation
SB: 1 Naturalize
SB: 4 Tormod’s Crypt
SB: 2 Gempalm Incinerator
SB: 1 Goblin Welder

Round 1: Fred Mercier playing control slaver (with Intruder Alarm+Welder combo)

Game 1 (He plays first)
1st turn:
He plays a Tomb
  I play a Land + Prospector
2nd turn:
He plays a Mox + Mindless Automaton
I play a Recruiter (with Taiga and Food chain in my hand)
3rd turn:
He play thirst, Island + Crypt + timetwister  (No more golbins in the top, no more food chain in my hand! Sad )
I draw nothing but a lot of lands, 2 Ringleader and a Gempalm in his twister. I play waste, waste his Tomb and cycle my Gempalm (I draw a Food Chain)
4th turn:
He plays a Worker.
I draw a Taiga, Cast Food Chain and Combo out.
Life total:
Me: 20
Him: 20 18 16 14 0

Game 2:
1st turn:
He cast a Welder
     I play a Lackey
2nd turn:
He drop a land
I drop a waste, waste one of his land, cast a Lotus Petal + Goblin Thinkerer
3rd turn:
 He drop a land
I drop another waste and waste one of his land again. I attack with Lackey and Thinkerer, he block the lackey with his welder.
4th turn:
He does nothing.
I drop a land, cast Piledriver and attack with Thinkerer.
5th turn:
  He does nothing.
I cast Mana Crypt + Marton (Search a Pildriver) + Pildriver and I attack with Pildriver and Thinkerer.
6th turn:
 He does nothing.
I attack with all my goblins for the win.
Life total:
Me: 20 19 16
Him: 20 19 18 17 13 0

Games: 2-0
Matchs: 1-0

Round 2:  Someone playing Suicide (with splash Bleu for Ancestral Recall + Walk)
Game 1: (he starts)
1st turn:
He plays Cabal Therapy. He then says: Well… You’re playing with bleu sleeves, I think you play bleu… I’ll say Force of Will. I found that very funny!! Wink
      I play a land + Prospector
2nd turn:
He plays another Therapy, naming Sharpshooter (that I had since the beginning of the game)
      I play a Lackey.
3r turn:
He drops a land
I drop a Ringleader with Lackey + Cast Pildriver.
4th turn:
He casts a Nantuko Shade.
I cast a Warchief + Pildriver and attack with all. He blocks a Driver with his Shade.
5th turn:
 He cast another Shade.
I cast a SGC an attack for the win.
Life total:
Me: 20 19
Him: 20 19 17 16 5 0

Game 2:
1st turn:
He duress me, I discard a Food Chain
     I play a land
2nd turn:
He cast a Mox + Hypnotic Specter
I play a Recruiter. I think about how to stack my goblins. I had 2 Mountains into play and 2 others in my hand + 1 Warchief in my hand, so I did not fear Wasteland and if he make me discard one Mountain with the Specter, I would have 3 to cast a Warchief next turn and a ringleader in 2 turns. So I stack something like: Warchief, Ringleader, 3 * Pildriver, Prospector, Ringleader, etc.

3rd turn:
He cast a Sinkhole on one of my mountain AND makes me discard a mountain with his Specter. That was bad for me. He beats me with his Specter, I try to beat him with my goblins, but He won because he tutors for a Time Walk (I would have killed him the next turn…)

Life total:
Me: 20 19 18 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0
Him: 20 19 18 17 16 12 9 6 4

Game 3:
1st turn:
I only drop a land.
He Duress me (I had only lands and goblins in my hand)
2nd turn:
I Cast a Piledriver.
    He plays a demonic tutor.
3rd turn:
I cast a Warchief.
He plays a Waste, Waste one of my Taiga, casts Dark Ritual + Masticore (with 2 lands into play and 2-3 cards in hand.
4th turn:
I did nothing, since I had only 1 toughness goblin.
He discard a Walk for his Masticore. He plays a Strip Mine and Strip one of my Mountain. (he had now only one card in his hand)
5h turn:
I drop a Taiga and Cast Food Chain.
He discards a Vampiric tutor for his Masticore. He attacks with it.
6th turn:
I cast a Warchief and attack with all.
He discard his card, and does nothing.
7th turn:
I cast a lackey. He ping the Lackey, but in response, I cycle a Gempalm to deal 4 damages to his Masticore (since he had only 2 lands in play, he couldn’t regenerate it.) I attack for the win.

Me: 20 19 18 12
Him: 20 15 6 2 0

Games: 4-1
Matchs: 2-0

3rd round: Justin playing GAT
Game 1: (he plays first)
1s turn:
He duress me, I discard a Food Chain.
I play a broken first turn: Land + Petal + Mox Ruby + Lackey + Recruiter. Since I had a Ringleader in my hand, I stack on the top of my library: 3x Lackey + 2xRingleader + Warchief + Pildriver, etc.
2nd turn:
He drops a 2nd land.
I drop a 2nd land and attack with my 2 goblins. I drop Ringleader with Lackey, and cast 2 other Lackey (one gets drain)
3rd turn:
He casts a cunning wish (searching for Wail of the Nim)
I attack with all, drop 2 Ringleader with my Lackeys, cast Warchief + Pildriver

Life Total:
Me: 20

      He cast a Dryad.
      I drop a 2nd land.
3rd turn:
He casts Brainstorm + AK and attack for 3.
I drop my 3rd land and cast Lotus + Blood Moon + Food Chain.
4th turn:
 He attacks me.

Life Total:
Me: 20 19 17 14
Him: 20 19

2nd turn:
He does nothing, he doesn’t play a land.
I play a wasteland and waste his lone land.
He drew no land before turn 5!  And all he did with that land was Swording a goblin. I beats him with a lot of goblins. He eventually drew another land and Fire two goblins, but that was too late…

Life total:
Me: 20 21
Him: 20 19 18 16 15 14 12 9 5 2 1 0

Semifinal:
Justin playing GAT
Game 1 (I go first)
1st turn:
 I drop a land.
     He Cast a Mox.
2nd turn:
I cast Crypt + Ringleader. He cast AK in response, but Ringleader resolve.
              He cast a Dryad.
3rd turn:
I cast a Food Chain and combo out for the win.

Life total:
Me: 20
Him: 20 18 17 0

Game 2:
1st turn:
He duress me, I discard Black Lotus.
I drop a waste, waste his land and cast Mox Ruby + Lackey
2nd turn:
He drop a land
I drop a SGC with Lackey.
3rd turn:
He cast Lotus + Pernicious Deed and Deed for 2.
       I do nothing
4th turn:
He does nothing
I play recruiter. I stack my goblin really bad, I should have lost this game. I stack 3x Lackey + Ringleader + Warchief + Prospector + etc. I had only 2 land into play, I thought that with 3 lackeys, one will be able to drop the ringleader, I will cast prospector and be in good shape.
5th turn:
 He cast a Dryad.
      I do nothing.
6th turn:
He cast a Dryad.
      I cast 2x Lackey.
7th turn:
 He does nothing.
I attack with all : He has only one card in hand, and I’m pretty sure that it isn’t a bleu card drawer. So I trade my 2 lackey with his 2 dryad.
8th turn:
He casts Will + Lotus + 2xDryad. From now, I’m in big trouble, since my 3rd Lackey will never be able to drop my ringleader or a Warchief. From there, the game stall a little bit. I draw only Warchiefs and Ringleader, he draws only duress and little spells to pump his dryads. I had a Lackey and a Pildriver into play and he has 2 dryads with 8 counters on them. He eventually casts a 3rd one and he attack with one dryad. I top decked the only card that could have saved me: Gempalm Incinerator. He was at 1 life, I cycle my gempalm to deal 2 damage to his new dryad and attack with my lackey and my Pildriver for the win!

Life total:
Me: 20 11 2
Him: 20 19 17 15 13 12 9 6 5 3 1 0

Final: Jean-Philippe Keable playing landstill
We split the final!

Overall:
Games: 12-2
Matchs: 6-0-3

As always, it was a lot of fun to play at that tournament. That was the first time that I played that deck in a tournament. I was really happy with this deck, except for the Prospectors: 3 is really too much, I almost always sideboard 2 of them out. I think that 1 is enough. I did one really bad stack with my Recruiter against GAT and maybe a risky one against Suicide without seeing that was a risky one (after all, a Hymn to Tourach would have make me scoop). I did those two errors because I wasn’t very familiar with FCG. I learn a lot playing this deck all the day and I will learn to play it in the next month: I will be able do better stack with my Recruiter and doing this a lot faster! (So yes, you may expect me to play FCG next month Wink)

By the way, I want to congrats the little kid that played without sleeves: He beats a powered Academy Deck with his Elf deck that is, well, a beginner’s deck, not even close to have any chance in type one. It remembered me that we all started with a deck like that and seeing it winning against Academy was funny.

Nice Article, I am glad you went into detail.  Though I have a questions about goblin sligh.  What are Goblins slighs bad matchups, decks they lose to more often than win to.

Wow. A normal looking FCG deck that did well. *Thank you higher powers in the universe*

Congrats on the performance.

Goblin Sligh bad matchups aren't bad matchups, they are nightmare matchups! The only chance you have against Dragon and Draw7 to win is that your opponent keeps a bad hand and draw nothing good. Goblin Sligh win by turn 4-5 (turn 3 if you have a perfect hand, ie Lackey + Piledriver + SGC) and you have nothing to disrupt those decks so if they have can combo out, they just win! I never try Goblin Sligh against any Slavery (control or Workshop builds) because they wasn't played here when I played Goblin Sligh, but I think it's a really bad matchup too.

FCG is better than Goblin Sligh because it can win by turn 2-3 and it has Wastelands + Strip Mine to deals with Bazar (Dragon), workshop and any dual land (to screw the control player).
